To buy Palantir stock, open and fund a brokerage account that serves your jurisdiction, search for Palantir Technologies Inc. Class A common stock under ticker PLTR, choose a whole-share or eligible fractional-share amount, select an order instruction, review the broker’s preview, and submit. Palantir’s Class B and Class F shares are not listed on a public exchange, so the public-market purchase route is Class A.
The difficult part is not finding the ticker; it is choosing an order that matches your priority. A market order usually seeks prompt execution but does not guarantee the price. A buy limit sets a maximum price but can remain unfilled. Stop and stop-limit orders add trigger conditions and their own execution risks. Fractional-share eligibility, minimums, fees, trading hours, and transfer treatment are controlled by the brokerage, not by the ticker itself.
Which Palantir security can you buy?
Palantir Technologies Inc.’s FY2025 annual report, filed with the SEC in 2026, states that its Class A common stock trades on The Nasdaq Stock Market LLC (Nasdaq Global Market Select) under the symbol PLTR. The same filing says the company’s Class B and Class F common stock are not listed on any stock exchange and are not traded on any public market.

When a brokerage search returns several Palantir-related entries, confirm that the result identifies Palantir Technologies Inc. Class A common stock and ticker PLTR. Do not assume that a similarly named instrument, private-market listing, derivative, or foreign product represents the listed Class A shares.

Dividend policy is not a purchase feature
In that annual report, Palantir says it has never declared or paid cash dividends and does not expect to pay them in the foreseeable future. That is a company statement in the filing, not a promise about every future board decision. A buyer should not treat PLTR as a dividend-paying security based on the stock ticker alone.
What you need before placing an order
You normally buy shares through a brokerage firm. Before entering the order, make sure the practical prerequisites are complete:
- The brokerage accepts customers in your jurisdiction.
- Your account application, identity checks, and any required agreements are complete.
- Cash is available in the account, or the account has whatever funding capability the firm permits.
- You know whether the account supports whole shares, fractional shares, or both.
- You have read the firm’s current schedule for commissions or other charges, order handling, trading hours, and settlement-related restrictions.
- You understand whether the order will be routed through the firm’s normal trading service or handled through a special fractional-share program.
Brokerages use different menus and definitions. The SEC’s Investor.gov guidance says order types and trading instructions can differ by firm, and instructions with similar names may work differently. The broker’s own agreement, order ticket, and help pages are the controlling source for what your account can actually do.

How to buy PLTR step by step
- Choose a brokerage that serves you. Compare the features that matter for this purchase: access to Nasdaq-listed stocks, fractional-share support for PLTR, minimum order amounts, available order types, trading-hour limits, fees, execution practices, and transfer rules. No particular brokerage is required by the stock listing.
- Open and verify the account. Complete the firm’s application and any identity, tax, or regulatory checks it requests. Account approval and funding rules are firm-specific.
- Fund the account. Transfer money using a method the brokerage accepts and wait until the platform shows the funds as available for trading. A displayed cash balance and immediately tradable cash are not necessarily the same thing at every firm, so check the account status.
- Search for the security. Enter PLTR in the brokerage’s search field. Select the result that says Palantir Technologies Inc. Class A common stock and verify that the exchange or market description is consistent with Nasdaq.
- Choose an amount. Enter a number of whole shares, or select a dollar amount or fractional quantity if the firm makes fractional trading available for PLTR. The ticket should show the estimated value and any applicable charge before submission.
- Select an order type. Decide whether you need the immediacy of a market order, the price ceiling of a buy limit, or a trigger-based instruction. The exact labels, defaults, and eligible combinations vary by platform.
- Set duration and session options. If the ticket offers day, good-til-canceled, immediate-or-cancel, fill-or-kill, all-or-none, on-open, or on-close choices, read the firm’s definition before selecting one. Some choices may not be available for fractional orders.
- Review the order preview. Check the security name and ticker, side (buy), share or dollar amount, estimated value, limit or stop prices, duration, fees, and any warning about fractional execution or delayed processing.
- Submit and record the confirmation. After submission, note whether the order is accepted, pending, partially filled, filled, rejected, or canceled. Save the confirmation number and review the position only after the platform reports an execution.
Can you buy fractional PLTR shares?
Yes, a brokerage may allow it, but availability is not automatic. The SEC defines a fractional share as ownership of less than one full share. Depending on the firm, you may enter a dollar amount, a fractional share quantity, or both. A brokerage can limit fractional trading to selected securities, require a minimum amount, support only certain order types or trading hours, aggregate customer orders, charge a fee, delay execution, or restrict access to a particular platform.
Therefore, the correct answer for your account is the one shown in the brokerage’s current fractional-share policy and order ticket. A whole-share order being available for PLTR does not prove that a fractional order is available.

Questions to ask before using a fractional order
- Is PLTR eligible for fractional orders in this account and jurisdiction?
- Can you enter the order by dollars, by a fractional share quantity, or either?
- Which order types are supported for fractional PLTR orders?
- Are fractional orders limited to regular market hours, or can they be submitted in another session?
- Is there a minimum dollar amount or minimum fraction?
- Does the firm charge a separate fee or apply a different pricing rule?
- Are orders aggregated with other customers’ orders, and can that create a delay or a single blended execution price?
- How are dividends and corporate actions credited to a fractional position?
- Do fractional shares receive voting rights under this program?
- Can the fractional position be transferred out to another brokerage, or must it be sold or converted first?
Dividends, corporate actions, voting, and transfers
SEC guidance says fractional positions generally participate proportionally in dividends and corporate actions. Voting rights can depend on the brokerage’s program. Fractional positions generally cannot be transferred to another brokerage. Those are general program characteristics, not a substitute for the account agreement: ask the firm how it handles a specific event, transfer request, or shareholder vote.
Choosing an order type
An order type sets the instructions the brokerage uses to seek an execution. The choice involves a trade-off among execution certainty, price control, the chance of a partial or missed fill, trigger behavior, and duration.

Market orders: execution first
A market order tells the broker to seek the best available price. It will generally execute promptly during the applicable trading session, but the quoted or last-traded price is not a promise of your fill. Prices can change between order entry and execution, and separate portions of an order can execute at different prices. This makes a market order a poor choice if paying above a particular maximum would be unacceptable.
Buy limit orders: price ceiling first
A buy limit order specifies the highest price you are willing to pay. It can execute at that price or lower, but it cannot guarantee that the purchase will happen. If PLTR does not trade at or below the limit while the order is active, the order can expire or remain open according to its duration. If the market moves away, you may end the session with no shares.
Stop orders: a trigger that becomes a market order
A stop order remains inactive until its stop price is reached according to the brokerage’s trigger standard. It then becomes a market order. Because the resulting order is a market order, the stop price is not a guaranteed sale or purchase price. Rapid movement, gaps, and available liquidity can all affect the eventual execution.

Stop-limit orders: a trigger with a fill boundary
A stop-limit order changes into a limit order after the stop price is reached. The limit protects against an execution beyond your stated boundary, but that protection can leave you unfilled if the market moves through the limit too quickly. Read the firm’s explanation of which price is monitored for the trigger and how long the resulting limit remains active.
Duration and session instructions
Order duration determines how long an unfilled instruction remains active. The SEC lists several common choices, but availability and detailed treatment are firm-specific.

Do not infer a firm’s meaning from a label alone. A brokerage may impose a time limit on good-til-canceled orders, omit certain instructions for fractional shares, or use different rules for extended-hours trading.
How to review the order before sending it
The final preview is the point at which an avoidable mistake is easiest to catch. Check each field deliberately:
- Identity: Palantir Technologies Inc. Class A common stock, ticker PLTR.
- Side: Buy, not sell or short.
- Quantity: Whole shares, fractional quantity, or dollar amount as intended.
- Order type: Market, limit, stop, or stop-limit.
- Prices: Correct limit and stop values, where applicable.
- Duration: Day, good-til-canceled, or another instruction you understand.
- Estimated value and charges: The total shown by the firm, including any disclosed fee or adjustment.
- Execution notice: Any warning about delayed, aggregated, or limited fractional execution.
Submit only after these details match your intended trade. An accepted order is not necessarily a filled order; use the order-status screen to distinguish pending, partial, filled, rejected, and canceled states.

Common problems and what they mean
The search returns several Palantir entries
Recheck the full legal name and ticker. The public-market purchase described here is Class A common stock on Nasdaq. Class B and Class F shares are not publicly listed.
The fractional option is missing
The firm may not support fractional trading for PLTR, your account type, your jurisdiction, the selected platform, or the chosen order type. Check the fractional-share policy and try the whole-share ticket only if that matches your plan.
The order is rejected
Read the rejection message rather than resubmitting blindly. Typical firm-specific causes include unavailable funds, an unsupported order type, an invalid duration, a quantity below the minimum, an ineligible fractional request, or a session restriction. Correct the stated issue and review the ticket again.
The order is still pending
A pending status means the brokerage has not reported a completed execution. A limit order may be waiting for the market to reach its price; a fractional order may be queued or aggregated; a day order may simply be active during the session. Check the order details and expiration rather than placing a duplicate order.

Partial execution can occur when available liquidity does not cover the entire request or when the firm handles an order in separate pieces. Market orders can execute at different prices across those pieces. The remaining quantity follows the selected duration and the brokerage’s rules.

The stop price was reached but the fill differs
A stop order becomes a market order after its trigger. The stop price is not a guaranteed execution price, and a rapid move or limited liquidity can change the fill. A stop-limit order adds a price boundary but can remain unfilled if the market moves beyond that boundary.
What to verify after purchase
Once the brokerage reports a fill, confirm the executed quantity and prices in the trade confirmation, then check the position page for the resulting whole or fractional balance. Keep the confirmation and review how the firm records any residual cash from a dollar-based fractional order. If you later move accounts, ask in advance whether the fractional portion can transfer; SEC guidance says such positions generally cannot be transferred directly to another brokerage.
Also review the account’s treatment of future corporate actions, any dividend entitlement if Palantir’s policy changes, voting rights, and statements. These features belong to the brokerage program and can differ even when two firms both advertise fractional shares.

Use the following questions to narrow the order choice without assuming that one instruction is universally best:
- Is completing the purchase more important than controlling the maximum price? If yes, investigate a market order and its price risk; if no, investigate a buy limit and accept the possibility of no fill.
- Can you tolerate a partial execution? If not, ask whether an all-or-none or fill-or-kill instruction is available and understand that stricter conditions reduce the chance of completion.
- Does the order need to remain active beyond today? Compare day and good-til-canceled rules, including the firm’s maximum duration.
- Are you using a trigger? Confirm whether a stop or stop-limit instruction matches the intended trigger and whether you accept the possibility of a different fill or no fill.
- Are you buying a fraction? Recheck eligibility, minimums, supported order types, execution timing, and transfer treatment before submitting.
These questions organize the trade-offs; they do not determine whether PLTR is suitable for your objectives, risk tolerance, tax situation, or time horizon. Those are separate decisions that require your own circumstances and, where appropriate, qualified advice.
