Palantir Technologies Inc.’s publicly traded security is its Class A common stock, listed on Nasdaq under PLTR. To buy it, open and fund a brokerage account that serves your jurisdiction, find the verified PLTR listing, select an order type and share amount, review the estimated transaction, and submit it. The broker routes the order for execution, so the fill price can differ from the quote shown when you begin.

This is a purchase-process guide, not a judgment about whether PLTR fits your finances, risk tolerance, tax situation, or investment horizon.

What you are buying when you search for PLTR

Palantir’s 2025 Form 10-K identifies the listed security as Palantir Technologies Inc. Class A common stock, ticker PLTR, traded on Nasdaq. Class B and Class F shares are not listed on a public exchange, so a normal retail brokerage search should return the Class A listing.

Check the company name and share class on the order ticket before submitting. A ticker alone is not enough protection against selecting the wrong instrument, especially when a broker displays similarly named securities, derivatives, or overseas listings.

Palantir’s filing says, “Investing in our Class A common stock involves a high degree of risk.” That warning means an investor could lose part or all of the amount invested. Buying mechanics are straightforward; deciding how much exposure is appropriate requires your own circumstances and, when needed, advice from a qualified professional.

Why a brokerage account is the usual route

A brokerage account connects you to an exchange and provides the order interface, custody, statements, and account records needed to hold shares. Before applying, confirm that the provider accepts your country or state of residence, supports the account type you want, and allows trading in US-listed stocks.

The account may be a regular taxable brokerage account or another structure offered by the provider, such as an individual retirement account. Each structure can have different contribution, withdrawal, tax-reporting, and investment rules. Choose based on your objective and eligibility rather than simply selecting the account with the shortest application.

Do not assume Palantir offers a direct public stock-purchase plan. A general Securities and Exchange Commission explanation of direct stock plans does not establish that Palantir operates one. For most readers, a regulated brokerage is the practical purchase channel.

Two feature examples to investigate

The following are examples of published features, not a ranking or endorsement. Prices and eligibility can change; check the provider’s live disclosures and the PLTR trade ticket.

“$0 commission” describes the stated online trading commission, not every possible cost. Regulatory or exchange-related charges, wire fees, fund expenses, spreads, and other service charges may still affect your total.

Fractional shares: useful, but broker-specific

The SEC defines a fractional share as “when you own less than one full share of a stock or other security.” Fractional trading can let you invest a fixed dollar amount instead of buying an entire share, which may help when the share price is high or when you are building a small position.

Rules differ by provider. The SEC notes that availability, eligible securities, execution method, order types, minimums, after-hours access, fees, voting rights, liquidity, and transferability depend on the broker. A broker may also limit how fractional positions are sold or moved to another firm.

E*TRADE’s published policy describes a $5 minimum notional amount for eligible fractional orders and supports up to three decimal places for eligible listed Reg-NMS securities. That policy does not prove that PLTR is eligible at the moment you trade. Fidelity’s comparison page reports access to more than 7,000 US stocks and ETFs for fractional trading, but you must still check the individual PLTR ticket and the order-type rules.

If fractional ownership matters to you, confirm four items before funding: PLTR eligibility, the minimum order value, whether recurring or limit orders are allowed, and what happens if you later transfer the account.

Step-by-step: buying PLTR through a brokerage

  1. Define the account objective. Decide whether you need a standard taxable account or an available retirement structure, and identify any contribution or withdrawal rules that affect your choice.
  2. Confirm jurisdiction and identity requirements. Check that the broker serves your residence and can verify your identity and tax information. An account that cannot accept your residency is not a usable route, regardless of its advertised price.
  3. Read the current documents. Review the fee schedule, customer agreement, privacy and security information, order-execution disclosures, and fractional-share policy. Look for minimum deposits, transfer charges, wire fees, and restrictions on order timing.
  4. Open and secure the account. Complete the application, create a strong unique password, enable two-factor authentication, and record recovery details in a secure place.
  5. Fund the account. Transfer cash using an available method and wait until the broker shows it as available for trading. A deposit can appear in the account before it is fully cleared for every type of transaction.
  6. Search for the security. Enter PLTR and verify that the result says Palantir Technologies Inc. Class A common stock and shows Nasdaq as the listing venue.
  7. Select whole or fractional shares. Enter a share quantity or, if the broker supports it, a dollar amount. If the fractional option is absent, do not assume a technical error; PLTR, your account, or your selected order type may not qualify.
  8. Choose an order type and duration. Select the order method, such as market or limit, and review whether the order is for the regular session or an extended session. Read any warning about liquidity, volatility, or delayed quotes.
  9. Review the ticket. Check the symbol, company name, share quantity, estimated value, order price, duration, expected timing, and displayed fees. Make sure the order is a buy, not a sell, and that the selected account is the intended one.
  10. Submit and authenticate. Send the order only after the final confirmation screen matches your instructions. Your broker then routes it to a market or other execution venue.
  11. Check the confirmation. After execution, review the filled quantity, average or execution price, timestamp, and any remaining or cancelled quantity. Save the confirmation and statement for your records.

Market orders, limit orders, and execution price

A market order generally tells the broker to seek execution promptly at available prices. The displayed quote can move between the moment you open the ticket and the fill, and a fast-moving market can produce a different price than expected.

A limit order specifies the highest price you are willing to pay. It may protect against paying above that level, but it may remain unfilled if sellers are not available at your limit. The exact duration choices and rules differ by broker.

The SEC’s trade-execution bulletin explains: “When you push that enter key, your order is sent over the Internet to your broker—who in turn decides which market to send it to for execution.” Ask the broker about routing policies and review its execution disclosures if execution quality is important to you. A zero-dollar commission does not guarantee a particular fill price, and it does not mean the transaction has no other cost.

Costs to account for beyond the headline commission

  • Bid-ask spread: The difference between available buy and sell prices is an implicit trading cost that can widen when liquidity is lower or markets move quickly.
  • Regulatory and transaction charges: Providers may pass through certain third-party or regulatory charges even when the online commission is zero.
  • Account services: Wires, expedited transfers, paper statements, assisted orders, outgoing account transfers, and other services can have separate prices.
  • Currency conversion: A non-US dollar deposit or withdrawal may involve a conversion rate or fee.
  • Fractional-share costs and limits: A provider may use different execution, minimum, transfer, or liquidation rules for fractional positions.
  • Investment expenses: These apply to funds and other products you may hold alongside PLTR; they are separate from a stock-trade commission.

Use the broker’s current fee schedule rather than an old comparison article. The published $0 figures for Fidelity and E*TRADE were checked October 13, 2026, and both providers state that exclusions or additional charges can apply.

What can go wrong and how to troubleshoot it

PLTR does not appear in search

Check the spelling, remove filters for fractional-only or mutual-fund products, and confirm that US-listed stocks are enabled for your account. If the symbol still does not appear, contact the broker before substituting another instrument.

The fractional option is missing

Confirm that the broker currently supports fractional purchases of PLTR, that your account is eligible, and that the selected order type and trading session support fractional orders. Check the minimum dollar amount and whether the provider permits only market orders for fractional trades.

The order is rejected

Read the rejection message for insufficient available cash, an unsettled deposit, an account restriction, an invalid quantity, a limit price outside permitted parameters, or a session restriction. Correct the stated issue rather than repeatedly resubmitting an order you have not reviewed.

The order remains pending

A limit order can remain open because the market has not reached your price. Verify the order duration and status, and cancel or modify it only after confirming that the original order has not already filled.

The fill price differs from the quote

Compare the quote time, order type, execution timestamp, and fill details. Quotes can change before execution. If the result appears inconsistent with the broker’s stated policy, request the order-execution record from customer service.

You want to move the shares later

Ask both firms whether fractional positions can be transferred. Some brokers may transfer whole shares while liquidating or handling fractional remnants under their own procedures.

Risk and position-size decisions

PLTR is a single-company investment, so its result depends heavily on one issuer rather than a broad group of companies. The company’s filing explicitly warns of a high degree of risk and the possibility of losing part or all of your investment.

Before placing an order, consider how a large decline would affect your emergency savings, near-term spending, debt payments, and other investments. A brokerage’s ability to execute a trade does not make the security suitable for every investor. Avoid treating a past price move, a social-media forecast, or a promotional account feature as evidence of future performance.

If you cannot explain why you are buying, how long you might hold, and what loss you could tolerate, pause the order and obtain individualized financial or tax advice. This guide does not predict PLTR’s price or recommend a particular allocation.

After the purchase

Keep the trade confirmation and periodic statements, monitor account alerts, and review tax documents when issued. Record whether the position is whole or fractional and note the broker’s procedure for dividends, corporate actions, and transfers. If you later add shares, document the date, quantity, and price for your own tracking.

Review the account’s fee schedule and security eligibility periodically. Broker policies, fractional availability, order handling, and prices can change, so a feature that existed when you opened the account may not remain available.
