To buy Nintendo from Europe, open an account with a broker that accepts residents of your country and offers either Nintendo’s ordinary shares on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) or the NTDOY American depositary receipt (ADR). The TSE ordinary share trades in Japanese yen (JPY); NTDOY trades over the counter in US dollars (USD). Confirm the exact instrument in the order ticket, then compare commission, minimum charges, venue fees, custody costs and currency-conversion costs for your account. Those details vary by broker and country, so there is no single “European fee.”
Choose the instrument before you fund an order
Nintendo’s common shares are listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market. A European investor buying that security is buying the Japanese ordinary share, with prices and settlement expressed in JPY. Your broker may display an issuer name, ticker or numeric code; verify the instrument description, exchange and currency rather than relying on a search result alone.
A different route is NTDOY, a US over-the-counter ADR. Citi’s depositary information states that four NTDOY depositary receipts represent one Nintendo ordinary share. The ADR is a separate security, not a second ticker for the same Tokyo order. It trades in USD and can have different liquidity, hours, commissions, depositary charges and eligibility rules. A broker may offer one route, both, or neither to a particular European resident.

The ratio does not make the two routes interchangeable. Prices, spreads and execution conditions can differ, and the ADR’s USD price will reflect both the underlying share and exchange-rate movements.

Check availability and permissions first
European residence does not automatically provide access to Japanese or US securities. Before sending money, ask the broker’s support or account-opening pages these questions:
- Does the legal entity serving your country offer TSE Prime instruments, NTDOY, or both?
- Is the security available in your account type, and are market-data or trading permissions required?
- Will the order be routed to the Tokyo exchange for the ordinary share, or to an OTC venue for NTDOY?
- Can the account hold JPY or USD, or does the broker convert funds automatically?
- What are the minimum commission, exchange and clearing charges, custody or inactivity fees, and dividend-processing charges?
- Which order types, price increments and validity periods appear in the current order ticket?
Do not infer availability from a general list of markets. A broker can advertise international investing while restricting a particular security, country or account.
How to place a Tokyo Nintendo order
- Identify the listing. Search the broker for Nintendo and select the entry that explicitly identifies the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Prime Market, ordinary share and JPY. If several entries appear, read the instrument details and trading currency before proceeding.
- Complete market permissions. Enable international-equity or Japan-market permissions if the broker requires them. The approval process may ask about experience, risk or tax residency.
- Fund in the currency the order needs. Deposit euros, pounds or another supported currency. Determine whether the broker will convert at order time or whether you can convert and hold JPY in advance.
- Inspect the cost preview. Enter the intended number of shares or order value and read every line: commission, minimum, exchange or clearing charge, FX rate or markup, and any estimated regulatory or custody charge. If a preview is unavailable, obtain a current schedule for your country and account.
- Select an order type and duration. Choose market or limit only if the ticket offers it for this instrument. Confirm the displayed price increment, session status and validity (for example, day or another duration) before submitting.
- Review the venue and currency again. The confirmation screen should show the Tokyo listing, JPY, expected quantity, limit price if applicable, estimated total and route. Cancel if it shows an ADR, USD or an unintended venue.
- Submit and monitor execution. A submitted order can remain pending, partially fill or expire. Check the status rather than assuming that submission means a purchase.
- Save the contract note. Keep the fill price, quantity, commission, FX rate, timestamp, venue and any separate conversion transaction. These records help reconcile the account and evaluate the true cost.
What fees will you pay?
JPX states that broker transaction charges are set by each securities company. The headline commission is therefore only one component. Compare the same order value and account type across brokers using a complete cost worksheet.

Interactive Brokers’ published Japan schedules illustrate why securities commissions and currency conversion must be evaluated separately, but those schedules are not a universal quote for every European legal entity, country, account or order size. Use the schedule that applies to your actual account and date.

A practical all-in calculation
For a Tokyo order, calculate:
All-in cost in home currency = share consideration in JPY × broker’s applied JPY/home-currency rate + commission + exchange or clearing charges + other transaction charges.
If you convert cash beforehand, record the conversion fee and the rate used. If the broker converts automatically, compare the rate shown on the contract note with a mid-market reference at the same time; the difference is part of the effective FX cost. For an ADR, repeat the exercise in USD and add any ADR-specific or OTC charges stated by the broker or depositary.
Do not publish or rely on a single “European fee.” The result changes with residence, broker entity, account, route, order size, currency balance and pricing date.

How currency conversion works
The Tokyo ordinary share’s price is in JPY, so a euro- or sterling-based investor has two exposures: the share price in Japan and the JPY exchange rate against the home currency. A rise in the Japanese share price can be offset partly or entirely by a weaker yen when measured in euros or pounds; the reverse is also possible.

Automatic conversion
Some brokers debit your home-currency balance and perform the JPY conversion when the order executes. The broker’s rate may include a spread or a separate fee. Read the order preview and final statement to see whether the conversion occurred at execution, settlement or another time.
Manual conversion
Other brokers let you exchange cash into JPY first and hold the balance. This can make the conversion transaction visible and allow you to compare rates, but it may create a second trade, a minimum charge or an unused-cash balance. Confirm whether the broker permits JPY funding and whether the conversion itself has a commission.
The ADR is not currency-neutral
NTDOY trades in USD, which may simplify a dollar-funded account but does not eliminate currency exposure for a non-USD investor. You still face the USD exchange rate against your home currency, as well as the ADR’s relationship with the JPY-denominated ordinary share. Four ADRs correspond to one ordinary share, but the USD quote is not a fixed conversion of the Tokyo price because markets, spreads and exchange rates move.

Market and limit orders are general concepts; the reviewed exchange material does not establish that every European broker supports the same choices for Nintendo.

Market order
A market order tells the broker to seek execution at available prices. It prioritizes execution over price certainty. In a less liquid instrument, during a fast move or when the Tokyo session is closed, the broker may reject it, queue it, or execute it later under its stated rules. Check the ticket’s warning and the route before submitting.
Limit order
A limit order specifies the worst price you are willing to accept: a maximum purchase price for a buy order. It controls price but does not guarantee a fill. The order can remain pending, receive only a partial fill or expire when its validity ends.
Questions to answer in the ticket
- Is the order going to TSE Prime or an OTC venue?
- What price increment is permitted for this security?
- Which durations are available, and what happens at the end of the session?
- Can the order be filled outside the displayed session, or will it wait for the next session?
- Are partial fills charged separately?
- Does the displayed quote represent a tradable bid and offer or a delayed indication?
JPX publishes TSE sessions of 09:00–11:30 and 12:30–15:30 Japan time and describes trading-unit rules. These hours do not guarantee that your broker accepts orders throughout them, and the exact trading unit and order settings must be confirmed in the live ticket.

Neither column is a recommendation to buy. It is an execution choice. Compare the actual quote, spread, order controls and complete fee schedule at the time you trade.

Timing, liquidity and common failure points
The market is closed
If the Tokyo session is closed, a broker may queue the order, reject it or offer a different validity option. Read the status and expected execution window rather than assuming immediate execution. European daylight-saving changes can alter the local clock time corresponding to Japan’s fixed sessions, so check a current time conversion.
The wrong instrument appears
Search results can mix the Tokyo ordinary share, NTDOY and other derivatives. Stop when the currency, venue or instrument description differs from your plan. Reopen the details page and verify the identifier shown by the broker.
The order is rejected
Typical causes include missing market permissions, insufficient settled cash, an invalid price increment, an unsupported order type, a quantity that violates the broker’s trading-unit rule or an unavailable venue. The rejection message and broker support are the authoritative next steps; do not resubmit repeatedly with altered assumptions.
The fill is more expensive than expected
Reconcile the contract note line by line. A minimum commission, a separate FX spread, exchange charge or partial-fill fee can explain the difference between the share value and the account debit. If the currency conversion was automatic, compare the applied rate and timestamp with the estimate shown before submission.
The broker offers only one route
That is an availability limitation, not proof that the offered route is cheaper or better. Compare its all-in cost and trading controls with another account only if that alternative is legally available to your residence and worth the additional administration.
A repeatable comparison worksheet
- Enter the same intended order value and quantity for every broker.
- Record the security, venue, trading currency and whether the quote is live or delayed.
- Capture commission and minimum, exchange or clearing charges, and any recurring account or custody cost.
- Record the conversion rate, spread or markup, explicit FX fee and whether cash can be held in JPY or USD.
- Check order types, price increments, validity, partial-fill handling and session coverage.
- Confirm residence eligibility, market permissions, dividend or ADR processing and the broker entity issuing the price schedule.
- Date the worksheet. Pricing and availability can change, so an old comparison is not a current quote.
This method produces a broker- and account-specific answer without pretending that one published number represents all European investors.
What this article does—and does not—decide
The mechanics above explain how to identify Nintendo’s two commonly encountered routes, fund the correct currency, compare all-in costs and submit an appropriately controlled order.
