You can buy Nintendo exposure in two main ways: the Tokyo Stock Exchange ordinary shares (code 7974) or, for some U.S. investors, the over-the-counter American Depositary Receipt (ADR) NTDOY. Your country, broker and account determine which route is available. Before placing an order, verify the instrument, minimum lot, trading currency, foreign-exchange spread, commissions, custody and market-access charges, taxes, and any ADR depositary fee. A dollar-quoted ADR does not remove the yen-related currency risk of an investment linked to Japanese shares.
What you are actually buying
Nintendo Co., Ltd. is a Japanese company. Its common shares trade in Japan under stock code 7974 on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market. Nintendo’s stock-information page reports a trading unit of 100 shares, with that information stated as of March 31, 2026. The 100-share unit is the company-reported market lot; a broker may impose different order rules or offer fractional-share functionality, so check the broker’s instrument page before submitting an order.
Some U.S. investors may instead see NTDOY, an OTC ADR issued through Citi’s depositary program. Citi identifies one NTDOY depositary receipt as representing four Nintendo ordinary shares. Depositary ratios and program availability can change, so confirm the current terms at the time you trade.

The two instruments refer to the same company but are not interchangeable order tickets. They can have different market hours, liquidity, settlement arrangements, fees and eligibility rules. A quote in dollars describes the trading currency, not the location of Nintendo’s business or the currency risk embedded in the underlying shares.

How do I buy Nintendo stock?
The practical process is the same in outline for either route, but the checks differ by country and broker.
- Confirm your jurisdiction and account eligibility. Ask whether your broker allows you to trade Tokyo-listed foreign shares, NTDOY, or both. Availability can differ between taxable, retirement and other account types.
- Identify the exact instrument. Search the broker’s symbol list for “Nintendo,” then verify that the result is 7974 on the Tokyo exchange or NTDOY on the U.S. OTC market. Read the instrument description rather than relying on a similar company name or an auto-completed symbol.
- Check the order-size rule. Nintendo reports a 100-share trading unit for its Tokyo listing. Your broker may require that lot, permit a different size, or support fractional dealing. Confirm the rule shown for your account before entering quantity.
- Review the complete cost schedule. Include commission, foreign-market access or clearing charges, custody or account fees, currency-conversion markup, applicable taxes and, for NTDOY, any ADR depositary or pass-through fee.
- Check market hours and order types. A Tokyo order follows Japanese-market hours and local order conventions. An OTC ADR follows the broker’s U.S. trading session and may support a different set of order types. Confirm the session, validity period, limit-price behavior and settlement date in the order ticket.
- Fund the account in the required currency. A direct Tokyo purchase may require yen conversion. An ADR normally settles in U.S. dollars, but the underlying economic exposure remains connected to Japanese shares and the yen.
- Place a limit or other permitted order and verify the confirmation. Check the executed symbol, quantity, price currency, commission and estimated settlement details. Keep the trade confirmation and fee breakdown for your records.
Buying the Tokyo-listed shares (7974)
Who may be able to use this route
A broker that offers international-market dealing may be able to accept an order for a security that trades only on a foreign exchange. U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Investor.gov guidance says a U.S. broker may process such orders, but it does not guarantee that every broker supports every market. Investors outside the United States should consult the rules and protections of their own regulator and broker.
Checks to make before ordering
- Search for the Tokyo listing by both company name and code 7974.
- Confirm that the quoted price is in yen and learn how your broker converts dollars or another funding currency.
- Ask whether the broker requires the company’s 100-share lot, allows odd lots or offers fractional shares.
- Review Tokyo-market hours, accepted order types, settlement cycle and cancellation rules.
- Find out whether the account receives Japanese corporate-action notices and how voting, dividends and other events are handled.
- Read the broker’s statement of investor protections. A direct relationship with a foreign intermediary may not provide the same protections as an SEC-registered U.S. broker.
Buying 7974 gives you the ordinary-share exposure traded in Japan, but it can involve an extra currency conversion and foreign-market charges. Do not assume that direct ownership is automatically cheaper or more advantageous; the result depends on your broker, order size, country and tax situation.
Buying the U.S. OTC ADR (NTDOY)
How the ADR works
An ADR is issued by a U.S. depositary bank while the corresponding foreign shares are held through a custodian. Citi identifies NTDOY as Nintendo’s Japan ADR and states a ratio of four ordinary shares to one depositary receipt. The receipt trades in U.S. dollars and clears through U.S. settlement systems, which can make the order interface familiar to a U.S. account holder.

ADR convenience does not turn Nintendo into a U.S. company or eliminate foreign-exchange exposure. The value of the receipt is linked to the Japanese shares, the yen exchange rate and the supply and demand of the OTC instrument. Confirm the current ratio, trading status and any restrictions before trading because depositary terms can change.
ADR-specific costs and limitations
The SEC notes that depositary banks can charge fees for services such as dividend processing, currency exchange, voting and other corporate actions. A broker may deduct or pass through those charges. Citi’s fee-history page displayed “Currently, no DSF fee found for above CUSIP” for the referenced Nintendo ADR when accessed; that lookup is time-specific and does not establish that your broker charges no transaction fee, that no other ADR charge applies or that future depositary fees will not be introduced.
Ask your broker for the current NTDOY fee schedule and ask how ADR charges appear on statements. Also check the OTC market’s order handling, quote availability and settlement details. The available evidence does not establish a current, universal comparison of NTDOY liquidity or execution quality against Tokyo-listed 7974, so those factors must be assessed through your broker.

The SEC warns that international investments can add commissions, taxes and currency-conversion costs. It also explains that an investment can rise in its home-market price while losing value in U.S.-dollar terms if the exchange rate moves against the investor. These points apply whether you access Nintendo directly in Japan or through a dollar-traded ADR.
Fees to check before buying
No single fee estimate is universal because brokers price international dealing differently. Request the current schedule for the exact symbol and account, then total the items below.
Trading and access charges
- Commission or ticket fee: the charge for executing the order.
- Foreign-market access, clearing or settlement fee: an additional amount that may apply to a Tokyo transaction.
- Custody or account fee: an ongoing or event-based charge for holding foreign securities.
- Market-data fee: a charge for real-time or specialist exchange data, if required by the broker.
Currency costs
- Conversion spread or markup: the difference between the broker’s exchange rate and a reference market rate.
- Conversion timing: determine whether currency is converted when you buy, when you sell, when dividends are paid, or at more than one of those events.
- Separate cash balances: check whether the account lets you hold yen or U.S. dollars or converts automatically.
Taxes and corporate-action charges
- Ask which transaction taxes or stamp-type charges apply in your jurisdiction and to the selected market.
- Check dividend-withholding rules for your residence, account type and instrument.
- Ask about fees for voting, stock splits, tender offers and other corporate actions.
- For NTDOY, ask whether a depositary service fee or broker pass-through charge can be deducted from dividends or charged separately.
The SEC’s guidance supports checking commissions, taxes and conversion costs, but it does not provide a current Nintendo-specific quote. Treat any fee shown in a generic example as illustrative only; rely on the broker’s live schedule and the order preview.
Can currency changes affect my Nintendo investment?
Yes. Currency affects both Nintendo’s business and an investor’s return, and those are separate issues.

The company’s operating exposure
Nintendo’s FY2025 annual report (fiscal year ended March 31, 2025) says that sales outside Japan accounted for more than 70% of total sales and that most monetary transactions were made in local currencies. The report says significant exchange-rate fluctuations could adversely affect Nintendo’s financial position, operating results and cash flows. Nintendo also says it purchases foreign currencies on an ongoing basis to reduce exchange-rate effects. Those statements describe business risk and management actions; they are not a forecast of the share price.
Nintendo’s risk-factors section states: “Therefore, if there are significant fluctuations in foreign exchange rates, Nintendo’s financial position, operating results and cash flows could be adversely affected.” This is a company-authored statement in the FY2025 annual report.
The investor’s return exposure
If your spending or reporting currency is U.S. dollars, euros or another currency, your result depends on both the local share value and the exchange rate at the time you sell or receive a dividend. A stronger yen can increase the foreign-currency value of a yen-denominated holding; a weaker yen can reduce it, even if Nintendo’s Tokyo price rises. The opposite can occur as well.

NTDOY’s dollar quote does not hedge this exposure. The receipt represents an interest linked to Japanese shares, so the yen relationship remains part of the economics. A broker’s automatic conversion changes how cash is settled, not the underlying currency risk.

A simple way to think about the return
For a direct Tokyo holding, your home-currency result is driven by the change in the yen share price multiplied by the yen-to-home-currency exchange rate, minus fees and taxes. For an ADR, the quoted dollar price already incorporates market expectations about the underlying shares and exchange rate, but you still bear that combined exposure and any ADR-specific costs. This framework helps separate a company-price move from a currency move when reviewing your statement.
