To buy gold bullion safely, compare the delivered price and the dealer’s buy-back quote for the same amount of fine gold, verify the seller and every fee, and decide how you will take delivery or store the metal before you pay. Gold is not a guaranteed safe investment: the spot price can fall, and premiums, resale spreads, storage, insurance, and other charges can leave you with a loss even if the metal is genuine.
What you are buying—and what “spot price” leaves out
Physical bullion is gold held as a bar or coin. Its value depends in part on its fine-gold content and the market price of gold, but the amount you pay a dealer is usually higher than the metal’s comparable spot value. The difference is the premium. If you later sell, the dealer’s buy-back price may be lower than its selling price; that difference is the spread.
Those costs matter because a rise in spot price does not automatically mean a profit. You first have to overcome the premium paid, the retail-to-buy-back spread, and any applicable delivery, storage, insurance, or transaction charges. The CFTC’s consumer guidance, “Gold Is No Safe Investment,” says premiums, fees, and commissions can drain profit. The CFTC and FINRA likewise advise comparing dealer premiums and accounting for selling costs, fees, and commissions.
Spot is commonly quoted per troy ounce, while the item you are considering may contain a different amount of fine gold. Compare products by fine-gold weight, not by the face value of a coin, the outside dimensions of a bar, or the quoted price alone. A coin and a bar with different weights are not comparable just because both are described as bullion.

A practical way to calculate the premium
First find a current spot quote and note its time and unit. Then calculate the spot value of the product’s actual fine-gold weight. Compare that value with the delivered retail price. The difference is the dollar premium; dividing that difference by the comparable spot value gives the premium as a percentage.
For example, if the item’s fine-gold content has a spot value of S and the all-in delivered price is P, the dollar premium is P − S. This is a comparison method, not a prediction of future value. Include the charges you will actually pay in P, and do not assume a dealer’s advertised price includes shipping, insurance, taxes where applicable, or payment-related costs.
Compare the exit price, not just the entry price
Ask each dealer what it would pay to buy the exact item back from you immediately, and ask whether that quote has conditions, fees, or other deductions. Compare the buy-back amount with the delivered purchase price. That gives you a more useful view of the initial spread than a low-looking premium by itself.

There is no universal fair premium established by the sources cited here. Prices and spreads vary by seller and product and can change. A small coin’s dollar premium should not be compared directly with a large bar’s: calculate the cost against the same amount of fine gold, and compare the relevant buy-back terms as well.
Choose a bullion format by weight, cost, and resale needs
Bars and coins both provide physical gold exposure, but their weights, purity, premiums, resale markets, and handling needs can differ. Verify the exact product’s fine-gold weight and purity from its documentation or markings. Do not infer content from a product’s name or appearance alone.
| Format | What to check | Trade-offs to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Gold bar | Fine-gold weight, stated fineness, delivered price, and the dealer’s buy-back terms. | Bars come in many sizes. Smaller units can cost more per unit of gold; a larger piece may not suit every buyer’s budget, storage plan, or resale needs. |
| Bullion coin | Fine-gold content, stated purity, delivered price, and whether the dealer will buy that exact coin back. | Coins are typically government-issued and may have a face value, but those features do not by themselves show that a coin is a good-value bullion purchase. Compare premium and resale terms. |
| Collectible or numismatic coin | Separate the price attributed to gold content from any collectible markup, and ask how that markup affects resale. | A collectible premium makes this a different proposition from buying standard bullion and may make the item less liquid. Do not pay it unless you understand what supports it and how you could sell. |
The World Gold Council lists investment gold bars in denominations from 1 to 1,000 grams and 1, 10, 100, and 400 troy ounces. It says their fineness is commonly between 99.5% and 99.99%; institutional London Good Delivery bars are approximately 400 troy ounces. Bullion coins are typically government-issued, with face value and purity generally between 91.67% (22 carat) and 99.99% (24 carat). These are general descriptions, not a substitute for checking the specifications of a particular item.

Distinguish gross weight from fine-gold content
Purity describes the proportion of the metal that is gold. For a product whose gross weight and purity are both stated, its fine-gold content is the gross weight multiplied by the purity expressed as a decimal. For instance, 91.67% purity corresponds to a 0.9167 multiplier. Use the product’s stated specifications and the same weight unit as the spot quote when making a comparison.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not compare a 22-carat coin’s total weight with a 24-carat product’s fine-gold weight as though they were the same quantity. The stated purity and fine-gold amount are what allow a like-for-like comparison. If the seller cannot clearly document both, pause the purchase.
Vet the dealer before sending money
Retail coin dealers generally are not federally regulated, according to the CFTC/FINRA advisory. That makes independent checks and clear written terms especially important. A polished website or persuasive salesperson is not proof that a business is legitimate or that metal is being purchased and held as promised.

- Start with an identifiable business. The CFTC and FINRA recommend beginning with established local businesses. For a local or online seller, verify the physical address and business history. Research the owners and salespeople rather than relying only on the seller’s own claims.
- Check complaint and disciplinary records. Look for complaints through local consumer organizations, the state attorney general, or securities regulators, as applicable. Search for relevant disciplinary history as well as customer complaints; an absence of information is not proof of safety.
- Ask how the salesperson is compensated. Find out whether commissions or other compensation are built into the spread. Ask what the seller is charging for the product and what it would pay to buy the product back.
- Get the complete terms in writing. Before transferring funds, obtain the agreed retail price and a breakdown of commissions, shipping or handling, payment-related charges, taxes where applicable, storage, insurance, and any continuing or administrative fees. Include the product’s identity, fine-gold weight, purity, and delivery or custody arrangement.
- Confirm what happens after payment. Establish whether the metal will be delivered to you or held by a named storage provider, who legally owns it, how you can access or withdraw it, and what documents or statements you will receive.
Compare written quotes for the same fine-gold amount and the same kind of product. A low advertised price may not be the lowest all-in cost if it excludes charges, while a small premium is not enough to establish that a seller or storage arrangement is trustworthy.
Recognize pressure tactics and misleading promises
Walk away from unsolicited calls or messages, demands to “act now,” guaranteed or unusually large returns, and claims that an investment has little risk. Gold can lose value; a salesperson cannot remove that market risk by promising a particular return.

- Unclear financing: A financing pitch can obscure the amount of metal being purchased, the total amount owed, or the charges. Ask for the full transaction terms in writing and do not proceed if you cannot understand them.
- Vague storage promises: Be wary of claims that gold is being held at a bank or overseas facility if the location, custodian, ownership records, and withdrawal terms are not clearly documented and independently verifiable.
- Metal that cannot be verified: The CFTC has warned of fraud cases involving storage charges for bullion that did not exist and customer funds diverted into leveraged trading instead of metal purchases. Verify the custody arrangement rather than treating a statement or sales pitch as proof of physical holdings.
The FTC’s July 2025 consumer alert, “Real government agents aren’t asking you to buy and deliver gold bars,” states: “In fact, no one from the government will ever tell you to buy and deliver gold bars, move your money, or give cash to anyone.” Do not buy or deliver gold, move money, or hand over cash because someone claims to be a government agent.

Decide how you will take delivery or store the gold
A physical purchase requires a plan for delivery, storage, and insurance. The World Gold Council identifies these as arrangements a buyer of bars or coins must make. Neither home storage nor professional custody is universally best; the right choice depends on your access needs, security arrangements, coverage, and the full cost and ownership terms.
| Arrangement | Questions to settle before purchase | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Take delivery and store it yourself | How will it be shipped or collected? What does delivery cost? Does your homeowner’s policy cover bullion, and under what limits? | You have direct possession, but must arrange secure storage and check insurance. Do not assume a standard homeowner’s policy automatically covers bullion. |
| Use a professional storage provider | What is the named provider and specific vault location? Who is the legal owner? Is your holding allocated to you or pooled? What records, statements, or audit arrangements are available? How does physical withdrawal work? | Custody may add insurance, administrative, storage, and withdrawal charges. Confirm each charge and the access process before agreeing. |
| Delivery followed by third-party storage | Who handles each transfer, when does responsibility change, and what insurance applies during transit and at the storage location? | This involves both delivery and custody arrangements. Establish the charges, coverage, and documentation for each leg rather than assuming one provider’s terms cover the whole process. |
For home storage, ask your insurer specifically whether bullion is covered and under what limits; CFTC materials warn that coverage may not apply automatically. For professional storage, written records should make the provider, location, ownership, and withdrawal process clear. If the dealer says your bullion is stored at a distant facility, independently check that facility and retain documentation of the arrangement.
Compare recurring storage and insurance costs with one-time charges such as delivery or withdrawal. A purchase price alone cannot tell you the total cost of keeping or accessing the metal. The available guidance identifies these as due-diligence questions but does not rank storage providers or establish one arrangement as best for every household.

A purchase process that limits avoidable risk
- Set the scope. Decide whether you want standard bullion rather than a collectible product, what fine-gold amount you are considering, and whether you want direct possession or professional storage. Do not commit until you can describe the product and custody arrangement you expect to receive.
- Get a current spot quote. Record the source, time, and unit. Spot prices move, so a quote without a timestamp is not a useful benchmark for a dealer price.
- Request comparable written offers. For each dealer, record the exact product, fine-gold weight, purity, delivered retail price, payment-related charges, shipping, insurance, and applicable taxes. Ask for the dealer’s buy-back price for that exact item and any resale conditions or fees.
- Calculate the premium and spread. Compare the all-in purchase price with the spot value of the product’s fine-gold content. Separately compare the buy-back quote with the purchase price. Include any storage, custody, insurance, or withdrawal charges if the metal will not be delivered.
- Complete the dealer checks. Verify the business address and history, research the owners and salespeople, check relevant complaint and disciplinary sources, and ask how the salesperson is paid. Do not let an unsolicited approach or deadline replace these steps.
- Read the final agreement before paying. Confirm in writing the item, price, every fee, delivery or storage location, insurance terms, ownership, and how you can access or sell the metal. Resolve discrepancies between the quote, sales conversation, and final documents before sending money.
- Keep the records. Retain the order and payment records, product details, delivery confirmation or custody documents, insurance terms, and any storage statements. These help establish what you bought and what arrangement the seller agreed to provide.
Use the same method for every seller. The CFTC says that the greater the premium, spread, and ongoing costs, the further the spot price must rise before a buyer can make a profit. That is why the buy-back quote and full fee schedule belong in the comparison before purchase, not after you need to sell.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Looking only at the premium: A retail quote omits the cost of getting out of the position. Compare the immediate buy-back price and applicable resale charges as well.
- Comparing unlike products: Compare cost against the same fine-gold amount, not the sticker price of a small coin against the price of a much larger bar.
- Treating a collectible markup as bullion value: A collectible coin can carry a premium that is not simply the value of its gold. Understand what you are paying for and how that affects resale liquidity.
- Assuming “stored” means allocated and accessible: Ask whether holdings are assigned to you or pooled, where the vault is, what proves the holding, and how physical withdrawal works.
- Assuming insurance is automatic: Check the policy or storage agreement and its limits rather than assuming bullion is covered because other household property is.
- Accepting verbal fee assurances: If shipping, insurance, commissions, storage, or administrative charges are missing from the written terms, do not assume they are zero.
- Borrowing without understanding the obligation: Financing can make the total transaction harder to evaluate. Do not proceed until you understand the amount of metal, total cost, and repayment terms.
