The safest way to buy a gaming convention ticket is to start at the convention organizer’s official website or the host venue’s official website, then follow its ticket link to the authorized seller. Type the address yourself or use a bookmark you already trust. Do not treat a ticket offered in a Discord server, Facebook group, X post, email, or look-alike marketplace as equivalent to an official sale.
Before paying, confirm the web address, check that the ticket will be delivered into your own account or through the organizer’s approved transfer system, and use a payment method with dispute options. Gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, urgent payment demands, screenshots, and “speculative” tickets offered before the official sale are major warning signs.
Start with the convention’s official authority
Your first decision is not which listing looks cheapest; it is which seller the event recognizes. Open the convention’s official website by typing its address yourself or by using a bookmark you saved previously. You can also start at the host venue’s official website when the venue publishes event information. Follow the ticket button from that trusted page to the authorized ticket provider.

Ticketmaster’s consumer guidance states, “When possible, buy tickets from official sources.” That route gives you the best chance that the ticket is issued correctly, is visible to you in the provider’s system, and is covered by the event’s published refund, replacement, or transfer rules.

Check the event identity before clicking Buy
- Match the convention name, city, venue, dates, and ticket type with the organizer’s announcement.
- Confirm that the ticket link is published on the organizer’s or venue’s own site, not merely repeated in a social post.
- Read the event’s stated sale date, ticket limits, delivery method, refund terms, and approved resale rules.
- Be cautious when a page uses a familiar logo but the domain belongs to an unrelated company or contains extra words, misspellings, or unusual subdomains.
Ticketing rules and approved channels can differ by convention and country. A seller that was authorized for one event is not automatically authorized for another, so verify the specific event immediately before buying.
Prepare before tickets go on sale
Popular conventions may sell out quickly, but rushing creates openings for phishing and fake listings. Preparation lets you act quickly without bypassing basic checks.
Create the legitimate seller account
Use the account-creation link reached from the official event page. Set a strong, unique password and enable any security feature the provider offers. Save only the information the seller legitimately requests. Do not send a seller a photograph of your identity document, payment card, or one-time security code through a chat message unless the provider’s documented process specifically requires it.

Subscribe to notices from the organizer and the authorized ticket provider. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends setting up an account and checking back because promoters may release more inventory or add a show. A sold-out message at one moment is not proof that no legitimate tickets will ever appear.
Know the purchase limits
Read the event’s per-person or per-account limit before the sale begins. Keep the limit in mind when coordinating with friends. Do not create multiple accounts or use automation to evade a posted cap; doing so can invalidate orders and contribute to shortages for other fans.

Inspect the website and checkout carefully
A professional-looking page and a padlock icon do not prove that a ticket seller is genuine. HTTPS encrypts the connection, but a scam site can also use HTTPS. Verify the complete address and the organization behind it.
Navigate independently from messages
Unexpected emails, direct messages, and social posts can lead to convincing phishing pages. Instead of clicking their ticket link, open your browser, type the known organizer or venue address, and follow the ticket link from there. The FTC advises contacting organizations through a trusted website rather than a link supplied in an unexpected message.
Review the domain and checkout details
- Look for the exact organizer, venue, or authorized ticket-provider domain.
- Check the address bar for misspellings, swapped letters, added hyphens, or a different top-level domain.
- Confirm that the event name and dates remain consistent from the event page through checkout.
- Read the total before submitting payment. The price should show required fees and taxes where applicable, rather than revealing a large mandatory charge at the final step.
- Save the order number, receipt, seller name, and the policy page that applied when you bought.
If the checkout redirects through several unrelated domains, asks you to continue in a private chat, or tells you to disable browser security warnings, stop and return to the official event site.
Reject unsafe payment demands
Payment instructions are often the clearest scam signal. A seller who insists on a gift card, wire transfer, cryptocurrency, payment-app transfer, or another difficult-to-reverse method is asking you to surrender normal buyer protection. Urgency such as “pay in the next ten minutes,” “someone else is waiting,” or “the price doubles tonight” is another classic pattern.
Ticketmaster specifically says it will not request gift cards or wire transfers for tickets. That statement does not make every other payment method automatically safe, but it gives you a practical rule: when a supposed provider asks for a method its published policy rejects, end the conversation and use the provider’s known website to verify the offer.

Prefer a payment method with a dispute path
Pay through the authorized checkout using a payment method that gives you a documented dispute or chargeback process. Keep confirmation emails and transaction records. A card dispute is not guaranteed, and policies vary, but it generally offers more recourse than cash, a wire, cryptocurrency, a gift card code, or an irreversible person-to-person transfer.

A scammer may claim that a verification code is needed to “release” the ticket. Codes sent to your phone or authenticator app are intended to prove your identity to the account provider. Do not read one to a stranger or type it into a page reached from an unsolicited message.
Compare the three ways tickets change hands
The channel matters as much as the individual seller. Use this comparison before choosing a listing.

The table does not mean every official transaction is risk-free. It shows why the organizer’s recognized channel is the safer default: the event can associate the ticket with its own records and explain what happens if a ticket is canceled, transferred, or invalidated.
Treat social-media and community listings as high risk
Discord servers, Facebook groups, X posts, forums, and bulletin boards can contain genuine fans, but the platform itself does not authenticate a ticket. A profile with years of posts, mutual followers, or a photograph of an ID can still belong to a scammer or a compromised account.

Why a plausible listing can still fail
- The seller may never have owned the ticket.
- The same barcode may be sold to several buyers.
- The seller may transfer a ticket that is later canceled, recalled, or already used.
- A copied ticket page can imitate the event’s colors, logo, and seating information.
- The seller may pressure you to pay outside the platform, removing whatever limited moderation or recordkeeping the platform provides.
Do not buy “speculative” tickets offered before the official sale starts. A seller cannot reliably deliver a ticket that has not yet been issued, and a promise of future allocation is not proof that the seller has an authorized inventory source.
If you must use resale
Use only the event’s or primary provider’s official resale or transfer process. Start from the event’s known website, not from a seller’s link. Complete the transaction inside the approved system, and wait for the transfer to be accepted and visible in your own account before treating it as delivered. If the seller says the provider cannot show the ticket in your account and offers only an image or a downloadable file, do not proceed.
Do not trust screenshots or copied paper tickets
A screenshot proves only that an image exists. It does not prove that the barcode is valid, unused, assigned to you, or still active. Ticketmaster UK explains that printed tickets can be copied and that many mobile tickets use barcodes that refresh. A photograph or screenshot can therefore be useless at the entrance even when it looks authentic.
What legitimate delivery looks like
- The ticket is delivered through the provider’s documented mobile app, account, wallet, or named delivery method.
- The order is visible after you sign in through the provider’s own website or app.
- An approved transfer changes the ticket’s status and recipient inside the provider’s system.
- The event’s instructions explain when the barcode becomes available and whether it refreshes.
Do not let a seller “prove” ownership by sending a barcode image with part of the code blurred. Ask instead for a transfer through the authorized system. Never post your own barcode publicly, because someone else may copy it.

Scarcity can be real, but it also creates the pressure that scammers exploit. The FTC says the Better Online Ticket Sales Act prohibits bypassing posted ticket limits. In a 2026 enforcement release, the agency alleged that a broker used 75 accounts to obtain 277 Metallica tickets despite a six-ticket limit. The allegation illustrates how inventory can disappear quickly and why resale prices can rise; it is not evidence that every sold-out convention was manipulated.

When tickets vanish, do not assume that an unofficial seller has a secret allocation. Check the organizer’s announcements for additional releases, production holds, venue changes, or an approved resale opening. Follow the stated limit rather than trying to defeat it with multiple accounts or automated tools.
An older Ticketmaster estimate said nearly 5,000,000 fans bought counterfeit concert tickets each year in 2014. That is a historical estimate from 2014, not a current global statistic, and it should not be used to measure today’s convention-ticket fraud. The enduring lesson is that counterfeit demand is large enough to attract organized scams, so authenticity must be verified through the event’s system.
What to do if you think you were scammed
Act quickly, but do not send more money in an attempt to “unlock” a refund or replacement. A second payment usually deepens the loss.
- Stop communicating with the seller. Do not provide additional codes, identity documents, or payment.
- Verify the order independently. Open the organizer’s or ticket provider’s known website and contact support through its published channel. Do not use a phone number or link supplied by the suspected seller.
- Ask your payment provider about reversal options. Explain whether the payment was a card transaction, bank transfer, payment-app transfer, cryptocurrency purchase, or gift-card redemption. Ask what deadlines and evidence apply.
- Preserve evidence. Save receipts, transaction IDs, emails, usernames, profile links, messages, screenshots, the listing, and the promised delivery details. Do not edit the originals.
- Secure affected accounts. Change a reused password, enable multifactor authentication, and contact your bank if account or card details were exposed.
- Report the fraud. File a report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and report the account or listing to the platform where it appeared.
If the event is imminent, ask the official provider whether it can cancel a compromised barcode, reissue a valid ticket, or mark a fraudulent transfer. Only the provider or organizer can explain what remedies are available for that event.
Account for country and event-specific rules
Sale dates, ticket limits, delivery methods, refund rights, identity checks, resale restrictions, and consumer protections vary by convention and country. A policy that applies to a United States event may not apply to a convention elsewhere. Some events restrict transfers, require the purchaser’s name, or release mobile barcodes only shortly before entry.
Read the specific organizer and venue pages immediately before publication of your purchase decision. If the event’s page conflicts with an old social post, an archived announcement, or a seller’s claim, follow the current official page and ask the organizer through its verified contact channel.
Use this checkout checklist
- ☐ I reached the event page by typing the address or using a trusted bookmark.
- ☐ The event page links to the seller I am using.
- ☐ The domain is spelled correctly and matches the organizer, venue, or authorized provider.
- ☐ The event dates, venue, ticket type, limits, and delivery method match the official information.
- ☐ The total price and required fees are visible before payment.
- ☐ The seller is not demanding a gift card, wire, cryptocurrency, payment-app transfer, or immediate off-platform payment.
- ☐ I will receive the ticket in my own account or through the event’s approved transfer system.
- ☐ I have saved the receipt, order number, and relevant policy.
If any box fails, pause the purchase and return to the organizer’s official website. A legitimate ticket may sell out while you check, but an illegitimate ticket can cost money and still leave you outside the venue.
