You can buy less than one full share of an expensive stock by using a brokerage account that supports fractional-share trading. For example, investing $100 in a stock priced at $1,000 would represent 0.1 share; the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) presents this as an illustration, not as a current quote or guaranteed execution price. Your broker must support the feature, and the specific stock must be eligible under that broker’s rules.
The practical process is straightforward: verify availability, choose a dollar amount or fraction, review the broker’s execution and fee rules, submit the order, and confirm what filled. The important complications are broker-specific order controls, proportional treatment of dividends and corporate actions, limited transferability, and the possibility that a fractional position is harder to sell in illiquid conditions. Fractional ownership lowers the cash needed to start; it does not remove the stock’s investment risk.
What a fractional share is
A fractional share is ownership of less than one whole share of a stock or other security. The SEC defines it as “when you own less than one full share of a stock or other security.” Read the agency’s explanation in Fractional Share Investing – Buying a Slice Instead of the Whole Share.

Suppose a share is quoted at $1,000. A $100 investment would correspond to 0.1 share before considering any fees, price movement, or execution difference. You do not receive a special, cheaper version of the stock; you receive an interest measured as a fraction of a share through the brokerage program.

Fractional shares are useful when a whole share would consume more of your intended investment than you want to commit. They can also let you invest a fixed dollar amount on a schedule instead of waiting until your cash equals the price of one share. The fraction itself does not make the underlying company safer, diversify a single-stock position, or guarantee a return.
What you need before placing an order
A participating brokerage account
Fractional trading is not available at every brokerage firm. Account eligibility can also vary: a broker might support the feature in one account type, country, or platform but not another. FINRA states that “the availability of fractional share trading varies by brokerage firm” in its June 26, 2025 overview, Investing in Fractional Shares.
An eligible security
Even when a broker offers fractional orders, it may limit the feature to a list of stocks, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), or both. Some firms support only selected securities, exclude certain share classes, or change the list over time. Search for the exact ticker in the broker’s order screen and look for an explicit fractional-trading indication rather than assuming every listed security qualifies.

You generally need settled cash or available buying power under the account’s normal rules. Participating firms commonly let you enter either a dollar value (such as $100) or a share quantity (such as 0.1). The smallest permitted order, supported decimal precision, and whether recurring purchases are available are broker-specific details that must be checked in the account agreement or order ticket.
How to buy a fractional share: step by step
- Confirm jurisdiction and account eligibility. Sign in to the brokerage’s official website or app and read its fractional-share disclosure. Verify that the feature is offered for your country, account registration, and the platform you plan to use. Availability can differ by geography and account type.
- Find the exact stock or ETF. Search by ticker and full security name. Open the security details and confirm that the broker marks it as eligible for fractional trading. If the order ticket offers only whole-share quantities, that security or account may not qualify.
- Choose a dollar amount or fraction. Select the broker’s dollar-based or share-based entry mode. A dollar order targets a value; a share order targets a quantity such as 0.25. Check the displayed estimate because the final quantity can change with the execution price.
- Inspect order controls before submitting. Note whether the ticket permits market, limit, or another order type; the minimum amount; decimal limits; trading-session restrictions; and whether the order can be placed on the web, mobile app, or only one of them. Some firms accept fractional orders only during regular market hours.
- Review estimated cost and fees. Check the estimated total, any transaction charge, spread or other disclosed cost, and the cash that would remain. A “commission-free” label, if shown, does not by itself describe every possible account or regulatory charge, so read the current fee schedule.
- Submit and monitor the order. Send the order only after confirming the ticker, side (buy), dollar value or fraction, and order type. Depending on the broker, a fractional order may execute immediately, be combined with other customer orders, or be filled in one or more larger trades. Do not assume that clicking submit means an instant fill.
- Check the confirmation. After execution, open the trade confirmation and position view. Verify the filled quantity, average price, execution time, fees, and any uninvested cash or unfilled amount. Save the confirmation for your records.
Broker features to compare before you choose
There is no universal fractional-share specification. Compare the following items in the broker’s current disclosures, help pages, and account agreement. The SEC recommends asking the firm directly about how its program works; FINRA also highlights broker-to-broker differences.

How fractional orders are executed
A whole-share order can be routed and reported as a number of shares. Fractional programs need an additional process for quantities below one. A broker may fill your order against available inventory, route it for execution, or aggregate many customers’ instructions and then allocate the result. The SEC notes that the method can affect the price paid or received.
Real-time versus aggregated handling
With real-time handling, the broker attempts to execute your instruction as it arrives, subject to the order type and market conditions. With aggregation, the firm combines customer interest and executes one or more larger trades before assigning fractional amounts to individual accounts. The time between your instruction and the underlying execution can matter when the price is moving.
Market and limit behavior
A market order generally seeks execution at available prices, but the final price is not guaranteed. A limit order, if the broker permits it for fractional quantities, specifies the worst price at which you are willing to buy; it may remain unfilled. Some firms allow only market-style fractional orders or convert them to a broker-defined process. Read the ticket’s explanation rather than applying assumptions from whole-share trading.
Trading-session restrictions
Fractional orders may be accepted only during regular U.S. market hours, even when the broker offers extended-hours trading for whole shares. An order submitted outside the permitted window could queue for the next session or be rejected. The exact hours and cutoff times are terms of the individual program.
Dividends, splits, and voting rights
Dividends
Dividend treatment is generally proportional to the fraction you hold. The SEC illustrates this with a $10.00-per-share dividend: owning 0.75 share would produce $7.50 before any applicable withholding or account treatment. That is an explanatory example, not a forecast of a particular company’s dividend.

Ask whether the broker pays cash, automatically reinvests, rounds small amounts, or leaves a residual cash balance. Reinvestment can create another fractional position, while a minimum cash threshold or program rule may delay it.
Stock splits, mergers, and other corporate actions
Corporate actions usually require the broker to apply the event to fractional holdings. A split can increase the number of fractional units; a cash-in-lieu payment can replace a fraction that cannot be delivered; a merger or tender offer may use a broker-defined allocation process. The treatment, notice period, and rounding method should be in the corporate-action notice or account agreement.
Proxy voting
Voting rights depend on the brokerage program. Some firms do not pass voting rights for fractional interests; others provide a method to express a proportional or aggregated instruction. Do not assume that owning 0.2 share gives you the same proxy process as owning one whole share. Ask how votes are handled before relying on the position for shareholder participation.
Selling a fractional position and moving an account
Selling
Most programs let you sell fractional quantities, but the available order types, minimums, and timing can differ from those for purchases. In an illiquid market, a fractional position may be harder to sell promptly or at your desired price. The broker may combine your sell instruction with others or execute it at a time determined by the program.
Transfers between brokers
Fractional positions generally cannot be transferred intact to another brokerage firm. If you move an account, the delivering firm may sell the fractional remainder and transfer the cash while whole shares move in kind. Confirm the procedure before initiating a transfer, including whether the sale is automatic, how long it takes, and whether the receiving firm accepts any particular fractional format.

Tax and fee consequences
A sale created by a transfer can be a taxable event in a taxable account. Your gain or loss depends on cost basis, holding period, sale proceeds, and your circumstances; the broker’s form may report the transaction, but it cannot determine your personal tax result. A transfer fee, liquidation charge, or other account cost may also apply. Consider consulting a qualified tax professional when the position has a significant gain, a complicated basis, or a retirement-account restriction.
Costs that can change the result
Fractional investing does not have a single industry-wide price. A broker may charge a transaction fee, account fee, transfer fee, or other amount, and the fee schedule can differ by security or service. A fixed charge is especially important on a small order: a $1 fee represents 1% of a $100 investment before market movement. That arithmetic is an illustration, not a statement about any particular firm’s pricing.
Also consider the execution price. The amount displayed before submission may be an estimate, and a dollar-based order can receive a slightly different fraction after the trade fills. Review the confirmation for the actual quantity, price, and charges rather than relying on the preview.
Risk and suitability considerations
- Price risk remains unchanged per dollar invested. If the underlying stock falls 20%, a $100 fractional position is exposed to approximately the same percentage decline, before fees, as $100 invested through whole shares.
- Concentration can be hidden by a small ticket. Buying a tiny fraction feels affordable, but repeated purchases of one company can create a concentrated position.
- Liquidity is not guaranteed. A fraction may be difficult to sell quickly, particularly when the underlying market is stressed or the broker batches orders.
- Execution is not guaranteed. A submitted order can be delayed, partially filled, rejected, or filled at a different price, depending on the broker’s rules and market conditions.
- Corporate rights differ. Dividends are generally proportional, but voting and other rights depend on the program.
- Transfer flexibility is limited. A future account move may require liquidation of the fraction and can create tax or fee consequences.
Use a fractional purchase only after deciding how much volatility and single-stock exposure your overall plan can tolerate. Fractional access solves a position-sizing problem; it does not solve valuation, business, market, or diversification risk.

This is a reporting requirement for FINRA member firms. It is not a rule that retail investors must enter orders in six-decimal increments, nor does it mean every broker supports that precision in its customer interface. Your broker’s order minimum and displayed decimal places still control what you can submit.
Illustrative calculations
Converting dollars to a fraction
If the execution price were $1,000 and you submitted $100, the simple calculation would be $100 ÷ $1,000 = 0.1 share. If the execution price moved to $1,010, the same $100 would buy approximately 0.09901 share before fees. The examples show why the final filled quantity can differ from the preview.
Calculating a proportional dividend
At a declared dividend of $10.00 per whole share, a 0.75-share position would correspond to $7.50. The actual credit can differ because of withholding, account type, broker rounding, reinvestment rules, or a change in the position before the record date.

Troubleshooting common problems
The stock appears, but fractional trading is unavailable
Check whether you selected the correct account, share class, and trading venue. Look for the broker’s eligible-security list and confirm that the feature is enabled for your jurisdiction. If the order ticket still accepts only whole shares, do not bypass the restriction; contact the broker or choose a supported security.
The order is pending longer than expected
Review the order status, permitted trading hours, cutoff time, and order type. An aggregated program may wait for a larger execution, while a limit order can remain open until its price condition is met. Cancel or modify it only after understanding whether the broker has already submitted part of the order.
The filled fraction is smaller than expected
Compare the execution price with the estimate and check for fees or a minimum cash reserve. A dollar order buys fewer shares when the price rises; a partial fill can also leave cash uninvested. The confirmation should show exactly what executed.
You are moving the account and the fraction disappears
Ask both firms how they handle residual fractions before submitting the transfer. The delivering firm may sell the fraction and send cash, which can create a reportable transaction in a taxable account. Keep the sale confirmation and cost-basis information.
Questions to ask customer support
- Is fractional trading enabled for my exact account and country?
- Which stocks and ETFs are eligible today, and where is the list maintained?
- Can I place dollar-based and share-based orders, and what are the minimums?
- Which order types, trading hours, and platforms are supported?
- Are orders executed immediately or aggregated, and how is the execution price determined?
- What fees can apply to buying, selling, dividends, and account transfers?
- How are dividends, splits, mergers, tender offers, and proxy votes handled?
- Can I sell any fraction, and what happens to it if I transfer the account?
Bottom line for choosing a program
Choose a brokerage program only after confirming that it supports your account and the exact security, then compare order controls, execution, fees, dividend and voting treatment, sale mechanics, and transfer rules. Place a modest order, inspect the confirmation, and keep records of the quantity and cost basis. Fractional shares make high-priced stocks accessible with less cash, but every dollar remains exposed to the underlying security’s market risk and to the limits of the broker’s program.
