Buying Bitcoin to hold is a two-part decision: decide whether you can tolerate a highly speculative asset, then choose between owning Bitcoin directly and buying a spot Bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP). Neither a long holding period nor a particular storage method guarantees a return or prevents loss. The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy calls bitcoin highly speculative and warns that investors can lose money.

Decide whether Bitcoin’s risk fits your situation

Bitcoin’s price can fluctuate widely. Holding for years does not remove that volatility or ensure that you will be able to sell at a profit. The SEC’s September 9, 2024 investor bulletin says: “Investors should understand that bitcoin and ether are highly speculative investments.” Consider whether you could withstand a substantial loss before deciding to buy; do not treat a long time horizon as protection against one.

Choose how you want Bitcoin exposure

Choice What you hold Practical trade-offs
Direct Bitcoin ownership Bitcoin held through a third-party custodian or under your own control using a wallet. You decide how keys are managed, or depend on a provider. Consider custody, transfer and transaction fees, recovery responsibilities, security, and convenience.
Spot Bitcoin ETP Shares in an exchange-traded product that holds Bitcoin and seeks to track its price. Requires brokerage access and brings product-specific sponsor fees and tracking differences; share prices may deviate from Bitcoin’s price. You have exposure through shares rather than direct control of Bitcoin.

A spot Bitcoin ETP is not the same as owning Bitcoin directly. The SEC bulletin explains that spot Bitcoin ETPs are exchange-traded commodity trusts, not ETFs registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940, even if a product’s name or common usage calls it an ETF. Check the specific product’s disclosures, fees, and availability where you live; these can vary.

How do I buy Bitcoin and hold it?

If you choose direct ownership, the practical sequence is to select a provider or wallet arrangement, understand how you will secure access, and make a purchase only after you understand the applicable fees and recovery process. Buying through a provider that holds the keys is different from withdrawing Bitcoin to a wallet you control. Confirm what the provider actually does and what happens if you lose account access or the provider becomes unavailable.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
  1. Choose direct ownership or an ETP. Decide whether you want Bitcoin itself or brokerage-held shares that seek to track its price.
  2. For direct ownership, choose custody. A third-party provider manages key access; self-custody means you are responsible for the private keys and recovery material.
  3. Review costs and procedures. Check the provider’s or product’s current fees, transaction and transfer terms, account protections, and recovery instructions before buying.
  4. Make the purchase and keep records. Save transaction confirmations and relevant tax records. If you self-custody, verify the wallet setup and backup before relying on it.

Should I keep Bitcoin on an exchange or in my own wallet?

This is a choice between delegating key control and taking responsibility for it. With a third-party custodian, the provider controls or manages the private keys, so access depends partly on that provider’s security and operations. With self-custody, you control the keys, but mistakes or loss of recovery material can leave you unable to access the Bitcoin.

  • Third-party custody: may be more convenient, but requires trust in the provider. Research its custody practices and account recovery process. SEC staff advises using strong passwords and multi-factor authentication for online accounts.
  • Self-custody: provides control over private keys but makes you responsible for safeguarding them and backups. Never share a private key or seed phrase.

Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance advises: “You should be wary of any service designed to hold your money online.” It also recommends backups and password security, and notes that recovery options may be limited if you forget a wallet password.

What a Bitcoin wallet and recovery phrase actually do

A wallet is software or a device that manages the credentials used to access Bitcoin; it does not contain Bitcoin itself. A private key authorizes transactions, while a public key supports receiving and verifying transactions. A recovery or seed phrase can restore wallet access, which makes it sensitive: someone who obtains it may be able to access the associated assets.

Loss of a private key or recovery phrase can permanently prevent access to the associated Bitcoin. Keep recovery material secret and secure, and understand how the wallet’s backup and restoration process works before storing significant value. Do not place a seed phrase in an unprotected online note or share it with anyone claiming to provide support.

Hot wallet or cold storage?

A hot wallet is connected to the internet, making transactions convenient but increasing exposure to cyberthreats. Cold storage typically uses an offline physical device and can reduce that exposure, but it is not risk-free: the device can be lost, damaged, or stolen. Its recovery phrase also needs secure handling. A hardware wallet is one possible self-custody tool, not a guarantee of safe storage; backup and recovery practices matter just as much.

What happens if I lose my wallet or seed phrase?

If you lose a device but have a valid recovery phrase and know how to restore the wallet, you may be able to regain access using another compatible wallet. If the private key and recovery material are both unavailable, there may be no central authority able to restore access. A forgotten password can also limit recovery, depending on the wallet. Keep a backup in a secure place separate from the device, and confirm that you understand the restoration steps while you still have access.

What should U.S. buyers know about taxes?

For U.S. tax purposes, the IRS treats digital assets such as Bitcoin as property. It says digital-asset income is taxable and that some digital-asset transactions must be reported. A purchase followed by continued holding is not, by itself, the same as a sale; tax consequences depend on the transaction and individual circumstances. Consult the IRS’s current digital assets guidance for applicable rules. This is a U.S.-specific summary, not tax advice for other countries.
