To buy or sell cryptocurrency in South Korea, first confirm that the exact service and legal entity appear on KoFIU’s current reported-provider list. Then follow that provider’s current account, funding, order, and withdrawal instructions. Procedures and eligibility vary by provider; do not assume that a familiar app, overseas service, or one exchange’s bank requirements apply to you.

Start by checking whether the provider is reported to KoFIU

The Financial Services Commission (FSC) says operators serving domestic users must report to the Korea Financial Intelligence Unit (KoFIU) under the Specified Financial Transaction Information Act. Check the current official KoFIU reported-provider list before creating an account, sharing identity documents, or sending money or cryptocurrency.

The FSC’s June 24, 2026 notice said 28 virtual asset service providers (VASPs) had been reported. It named Upbit, Korbit, Coinone, Bithumb, and GOPAX among them. Those names and the count are a dated snapshot, not a substitute for checking the current list. Match the exact service and legal entity, rather than relying on an app name or a familiar brand alone. The FSC also warned that an operator’s absence from a published warning list does not prove that the operator is lawful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reporting status is an initial legal and safety check, not a guarantee that an asset will rise in value, a transaction will be profitable, or a platform can never experience a problem. It is also not a reason to skip reviewing the provider’s own procedures. Confirm the legal entity behind the service you intend to use, then make sure the provider’s instructions apply to your own account and planned transaction.

The FSC warned about unreported operators targeting Korean users, including overseas services soliciting local customers, private exchange businesses, and referral promotions. It cited risks such as lost funds, excessive fees, weak security, and limited recourse. Treat guaranteed or unusually high returns, claims of exclusive information, and promises of a “global listing” as warning signs. Do not give an unverified operator your identification documents, login credentials, private keys, or funds.

Compare providers using checks you can verify

Official regulator materials do not establish a single best provider, a uniform onboarding process, or comparable exchange-by-exchange fees. Compare providers against your own needs and verify each detail directly with the service before depositing money.

  • Reporting status: Confirm the exact service and legal entity on KoFIU’s current list.
  • Eligibility: Ask whether the provider accepts your residency status and identity documents. Do not assume a rule for one customer applies to every customer.
  • KRW access: Check the provider’s current methods and requirements for depositing and withdrawing Korean won, including any bank requirements that apply to your account.
  • Trading and costs: Review its supported assets, order interface, fees, and any relevant withdrawal controls. The official materials cited here do not provide a common fee schedule or asset comparison.
  • Custody and transfers: Decide whether you plan to leave assets with the provider or transfer them to another provider or a personal wallet. Check the sending provider’s current limits and information requirements before moving anything.

For a practical comparison, write down the same questions for each candidate rather than comparing one provider’s marketing page with another provider’s fee page. Does the exact entity appear on the current list? Does it currently accept someone with your residency status? What KRW funding and cash-out routes are available to your account? Which assets can you trade, and what fees and withdrawal controls apply? If you expect to transfer crypto, what destination information and other details will the sending service request?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These checks matter because a provider’s public availability does not establish that every customer can complete the same onboarding or use the same payment route. Likewise, two services may support different assets, account procedures, order interfaces, or withdrawal controls. The official materials do not provide a like-for-like ranking or fee table, so verify the current terms directly and compare the costs and requirements that actually apply to you.

Eligibility, payment arrangements, supported assets, and procedures can change. Check them with the provider for your own circumstances; the available official guidance does not establish one account-opening sequence or identity-document list that applies across all services.

How to buy cryptocurrency

The exact screens and available payment methods depend on the provider. Use its current instructions rather than treating the sequence below as a universal exchange procedure.

  1. Verify the service first. Check the exact provider and legal entity against KoFIU’s current reported-provider list before registering or funding an account.
  2. Confirm that you are eligible. Review the provider’s current rules for your residency status and identity documents. Ask it directly if your circumstances are unclear.
  3. Complete the provider’s current onboarding and funding steps. Use only the payment route the provider says is available to you. Confirm any bank requirements, funding limits, and fees before sending money.
  4. Check the trade before confirming. Review the asset, the amount, the quoted price or order details, and the KRW or crypto destination shown by the provider. The official sources reviewed do not establish common order types or screen labels across services.
  5. Keep a record of the transaction. Retain the provider’s confirmation and relevant account records so you can track what you bought and later check your own tax position.

Before funding, make sure you are following the service’s current directions for your specific account. Do not infer a bank requirement, identity-document list, funding limit, or payment method from another exchange’s process. If an instruction is unclear, confirm it with the provider through its official channel before sending funds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At the order stage, distinguish the asset and amount you intend to buy from the price or other terms displayed in the interface. Review the final details, any stated fee, and the destination of the KRW or crypto before confirming. The regulator materials do not specify universal order types, execution rules, or interface labels, so use the provider’s own explanation for the order you are placing.

  • Trusted by 6 million users worldwide (4.9 App Store, 4.8 Google Play) - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets

A displayed price alone does not settle whether a transaction is suitable: check the final order details and any fee the provider shows before placing it. For a trade involving a decentralized exchange (DEX), also consider the additional token, liquidity, and wallet risks described below.

How to sell and withdraw proceeds

Selling through a provider generally means placing a sell order for an asset the service supports, then using a withdrawal route the provider makes available to your account. Do not assume that every provider offers a KRW market, supports the same assets, or permits the same cash-out method.

  1. Check the asset and destination. Confirm that the selected service supports the asset you intend to sell and that the order is for the correct asset and amount.
  2. Review the order details. Check the price or other order terms and any fee shown by the service before confirming.
  3. Check how proceeds can be withdrawn. Follow the service’s current instructions for withdrawing KRW or transferring crypto. Verify any account, bank, limit, or recipient requirements before submitting the withdrawal.
  4. Keep the confirmation. Save the transaction details and records needed to understand your activity and confirm the withdrawal reached the intended destination.

A sale and a cash withdrawal are separate things to verify: completing a sell order does not by itself tell you which withdrawal methods your account can use. Check whether you are withdrawing KRW or transferring crypto, confirm the permitted destination, and read the provider’s current limits and recipient requirements before submitting the request. Fees, available routes, and processing procedures are provider-specific; the official materials do not establish one universal cash-out method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a withdrawal is delayed or rejected, check the provider’s current instructions and contact its official support channel. Do not respond to unsolicited messages asking for credentials, private keys, or an additional transfer to “release” funds.

Understand transfer checks and the travel rule

South Korea’s revised framework adds information requirements around transfers between VASPs. Under the rule described by the FSC, the travel rule applies to transfers between domestic VASPs regardless of transfer size. A provider may request information about the sender, recipient, destination, or purpose as appropriate; follow the current instructions from the service initiating the transfer.

This means that a small domestic transfer is not automatically outside the information process merely because its value is low. The FSC cited a policy-context statistic: about 60 percent of transfers between domestic VASPs in the second half of 2025 were below KRW 1 million. It used that figure when explaining why the travel rule was extended to transfers of all sizes; it does not describe the share of all Korean cryptocurrency trades or transfers.

Transfers from a domestic VASP to an overseas VASP or digital-wallet service provider are subject to conditional permitted cases, while high-risk transfers are prohibited under the framework the FSC describes. Transfers worth KRW 10 million or more to an overseas VASP or digital-wallet service provider must be reported to KoFIU under the applicable framework. The FSC’s materials do not make every overseas transfer automatically permissible, so check the current provider rules and eligibility before initiating one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before an overseas transfer, ask the sending provider whether the destination and transaction meet its current requirements. Do not assume that an overseas brand’s availability in an app means a transfer is allowed, or that the same process applies to every destination. The FSC describes conditional cases and restrictions, and the service initiating the transfer is the place to confirm the information it requires for your specific transaction.

Before sending crypto, confirm the destination service or wallet, the asset, and any network or other details the sending provider requires. Blockchain transfers can be difficult to reverse, so do not submit a transaction until the information shown by the provider matches the intended destination. Check current transfer limits and required information with the sending provider first. If the provider requests sender, recipient, destination, or purpose information, provide it accurately through the provider’s official process.

Reduce the risks of DEX trading and self-custody

The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), in guidance dated June 16, 2026, warns that DEX trading can involve risks that differ from buying or selling through a reported provider. DEXs may lack listing review, and users can encounter rug pulls, lookalike tokens, liquidity shortages, sharp price moves, and limited remedies after an incident.

The FSS recommends checking several details before interacting with a DEX or token:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm the token’s identity using its contract address; a similar name or symbol is not enough.
  • Review the concentration of top holders and the available liquidity.
  • Check whether the token is listed on other exchanges, without treating a listing as proof that it is safe.
  • Check transaction details and wallet permissions before approving an interaction.

These checks address different risks. A contract address helps distinguish a token from another with a similar name; holder concentration and liquidity can inform your assessment of how a token is distributed and whether there is liquidity available. Other exchange listings are another point to examine, not a guarantee of safety or a substitute for verifying the token itself. Review the transaction details and permissions your wallet requests before approving them.

DEX activity also makes the transfer-confirmation step especially important. Blockchain transfers can be difficult to reverse, and the FSS warns that remedies may be limited after an incident. If you are unsure what a transaction or wallet permission authorizes, do not approve it until you understand the details presented by the service or wallet.

Self-custody is optional, not a requirement for buying or selling through an exchange. If you choose to hold assets in a personal wallet, you take responsibility for managing its keys and backups and for entering transfer details correctly. A hardware wallet is one possible product for self-custody, not a regulator-endorsed requirement or a guarantee against loss. The FSS guidance discusses wallet permissions and management but does not endorse a wallet brand.

Check tax rules for your own circumstances

Tax treatment depends on factors including residence and transaction type, so do not infer your liability from a general guide to buying and selling. The National Tax Service (NTS) says virtual asset income taxation was postponed by two years in a tax-law amendment passed in December 2024. Its cited overview is specifically for non-residents and foreign corporations: it says certain income from transfers, lending, or withdrawals through Korean VASPs may be treated as Korean-source other income and describes withholding. It also notes that treaty relief may be available through an application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The scope of that NTS overview is important: it does not supply a complete answer for every Korean resident, foreign resident, or transaction. It addresses non-residents and foreign corporations and certain income through Korean VASPs. Do not treat the postponement statement as a personalized conclusion about your current tax duties, or assume that the withholding and treaty-relief discussion applies to you without checking the relevant conditions.

What changed in the 2026 VASP framework

The FSC announced on August 11, 2026, that amendments to VASP registration and anti-money-laundering rules had been approved. Registration and retired-employee sanction provisions took effect on August 20, 2026. The FSC said the other changes take effect six months after promulgation. Because those provisions have different effective dates, do not assume every amendment began on the same day; check the current rules and provider instructions for the transfer or service you plan to use.

The changes strengthen registration scrutiny, customer due diligence, and information duties around transfers. In practice, expect a provider to apply its current verification and transfer procedures, which may include requesting information about the parties or destination. The precise steps depend on the provider and transaction. The registration date and the later effective date for other provisions are distinct; use the current instructions rather than assuming that every part of the amended framework became operative at once.

Can I use an overseas exchange while in South Korea?

Do not assume that every overseas service is lawful or available to Korean users. The FSC says foreign operators targeting domestic users are subject to the domestic reporting framework, and transfers from a domestic VASP to overseas VASPs or wallet services are subject to conditional cases and restrictions. Check the current official list and the sending provider’s current rules before using a service or transferring funds.

Do I need a Korean bank account to buy crypto?

The official guidance covered here does not establish one bank requirement for every provider or customer. Check the selected service’s current KRW funding and withdrawal methods and ask whether its bank requirements apply to your account and circumstances.
