A Nintendo Switch game download code is redeemed through Nintendo eShop and permanently assigned to the Nintendo Account you select. On a Switch 2 or Switch, use HOME → Nintendo eShop → user profile → Enter Code; online, use Nintendo’s redemption page after that account has opened eShop on a console.
Before paying, confirm the code’s region, the account that will own the game, and whether you are buying a game-specific code, an eShop Card that adds balance, or a Game Voucher with separate eligibility rules.

Choose the right kind of Nintendo purchase
“Download code” can describe several Nintendo products, but they do not work the same way. Identify the item before you buy or enter anything.
| Item | What it provides | Important limits | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retailer game or DLC download code | A specific digital game or downloadable-content entitlement | The code must match the Nintendo eShop region associated with your account. Nintendo says retailer-purchased software and DLC download codes do not expire. | You already know which game or DLC you want and have a code from a retailer receipt or card. |
| Nintendo eShop Card | Funds added to your Nintendo Account balance | It does not unlock a named game. You still select and purchase software in eShop. | You need account credit for an eShop purchase rather than a particular prepaid game. |
| Nintendo Switch Game Voucher | One eligible game from Nintendo’s current voucher list | An active, paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required. The voucher is usable only on the account that bought it and expires one year after purchase. | You have a qualifying membership and have checked that the desired title is currently eligible in your region. |
Retailer inventory, prices, delivery format, and available regions vary by seller and country. Nintendo’s redemption instructions do not establish a universal retailer list, so check the seller’s product description and return policy before paying.

Check the account and country before purchase
A redeemed game belongs to the Nintendo Account used during redemption, not merely to the console. If several people use the same Switch, decide which account should own the software before entering the code.
Nintendo eShop follows the country setting on the Nintendo Account. A code intended for one region cannot be redeemed in an eShop set to another. For example, an Americas-region code will not redeem through a Japan-region account and eShop. Changing account-country settings can have separate effects on balances, subscriptions, and purchase history, so do not treat a country change as a casual workaround.
Where to find a retailer’s download code
Nintendo says a retailer code is supplied on the purchase receipt or on a card included with the product. A printed card may show more than one identifier, including a control number and a download code. Use the download code, not the control number.

- For a physical card, gently reveal the concealed code if the card uses a scratch-off panel; keep the card until redemption is confirmed.
- For a digital delivery, check the retailer account, order email, or digital receipt for the code. Do not confuse an order number, barcode, or control number with the Nintendo download code.
- Do not publish or send an unused code to anyone. Anyone who redeems it first receives the entitlement on their account.
If the seller has not delivered a code, or the code is missing characters, contact that seller before opening a Nintendo support case. Nintendo cannot issue a retailer’s undisclosed code.
How to redeem a download code on Nintendo eShop on a console
These steps apply to Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch. You need an internet connection and a Nintendo Account linked to the user profile you select.
- Connect to the internet. From HOME, open System Settings → Internet and confirm that the console is connected. A code cannot be validated offline.
- Open Nintendo eShop. Select the orange shopping-bag icon on HOME.
- Select the receiving user. Choose the Nintendo Account that should own the game or DLC. Check the displayed username carefully; this is the account to which Nintendo will attach the entitlement.
- Open Enter Code. In the eShop navigation, choose Enter Code.
- Type the code. Enter the 16-character download code exactly as printed. Letter case, numbers, and similar-looking characters matter. Do not enter a control number when both identifiers appear on the card.
- Confirm the title. Review the game or DLC name and the account shown on screen. Stop if either is wrong.
- Redeem. Confirm the transaction. Nintendo validates the code and records the purchase on that account.
After a successful redemption, the game icon normally appears on HOME and shows a download-status bar. Leave the console connected to the internet and with enough free storage for the software. You can monitor progress from HOME; opening another application does not cancel the download, but powering off or losing the network can pause it.
If the game does not start downloading
Return to HOME and look for the new title or a paused download notification. If the title is not visible, open Nintendo eShop with the same account and check the account’s redownload or purchase-history area. A successful redemption may require selecting the title’s download option again, especially if storage was unavailable when redemption completed.

How to redeem a Nintendo eShop download code online
Nintendo provides a browser flow at ec.nintendo.com/redeem/#/. Online redemption is useful when the console is unavailable, but Nintendo requires the Nintendo Account to have accessed Nintendo eShop on a Switch 2 or Switch at least once.
- Open the redemption page. Use a current browser and go to https://ec.nintendo.com/redeem/#/.
- Sign in. Log in to the Nintendo Account that should receive the game. Check the displayed username before proceeding.
- Enter the code. Type the 16-digit code shown on your retailer receipt or card.
- Continue through the confirmation screens. Nintendo may ask you to enter the account password again. Review the title and account.
- Select Redeem. Submit the code only after verifying that the region, title, and account are correct.
Nintendo says it sends a confirmation email after an online redemption. The software can then be downloaded on a compatible Switch 2 or Switch that uses the receiving account. If the account has never opened eShop on a console, complete that initial eShop access first and then retry the browser redemption.
Region, account, and release checks that prevent most failures
Match the code region to the eShop region
Nintendo Support states: “A download code can only be redeemed on a Nintendo eShop set to the same region as the game.” The eShop region is based on the Nintendo Account country setting. A code bought for a different market can therefore fail even when the characters were entered perfectly.
Use the intended Nintendo Account
On a console, account selection occurs before you choose Enter Code. Online, verify the username shown after sign-in. If another family member’s account is active, cancel before redeeming; Nintendo does not normally move a game entitlement between accounts after redemption.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck the game’s release status
Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance notes that an unreleased game can produce an error when redeemed before its release conditions are met. Read the retailer’s release date and Nintendo’s title information, then try again when the game is available.
Do not assume every code has the same expiration rule
Nintendo says retailer-purchased game and DLC download codes do not expire. That statement should not be extended to promotional codes, other code categories, or Game Vouchers. A Game Voucher expires one year from purchase, so check its purchase date and the current eligible-games list before attempting to use it.

Use a retailer game code for a named title
A retailer game code is the direct route when the receipt or card identifies one specific game or DLC package. Entering it does not add general-purpose money to your account; it grants the identified software if the region and account requirements are satisfied.

Use an eShop Card when you need account funds
An eShop Card adds its value to the Nintendo Account balance. Nintendo’s purchase instructions list adding funds with an eShop Card as a way to pay for an eShop purchase. You then browse eShop, select a game, and complete the purchase with the available balance. An eShop Card is therefore not a substitute for a game-specific download code.
Use a Game Voucher only after checking eligibility
One Game Voucher can be exchanged for one title on Nintendo’s eligible-games list. Nintendo requires an active, paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, limits redemption to the account that purchased the voucher, and sets a one-year expiration from purchase. Eligible titles and available redemption options vary by region and can change, so confirm the current list before purchasing or saving a voucher for a future release.

Work through these checks in order. They separate typing mistakes from account, region, activation, and availability problems.
1. Re-enter the correct code
Read each character from the receipt or card and enter the full 16-character code again. If the card has a control number and a download code, use only the download code. Avoid copying spaces, punctuation, order numbers, or barcode digits that are not part of the code.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →2. Confirm the Nintendo Account and eShop country
Exit the redemption screen if the wrong profile is selected. Sign in to the intended account and verify its country setting. A region mismatch is a hard restriction, not a temporary network error; a code for one eShop region will not redeem in another.
3. Look in purchase history before trying repeatedly
Nintendo advises checking eShop purchase history when a code appears to have failed. If the game or DLC is listed, the code has already been redeemed. Make sure you are viewing the history for the account that was supposed to receive the purchase; another household account may have used the code.

4. Check whether the title is unreleased
If the code is for a preorder or a game that has not launched, wait until the release conditions shown by Nintendo or the retailer are met. Repeated attempts before release will not bypass that restriction.
5. Check the code category and date
Retailer-purchased software and DLC codes are described by Nintendo as non-expiring. Game Vouchers are different: they expire one year after purchase and also require an active paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Promotional or special-purpose codes may have their own terms printed by the issuer.
6. Contact the right party
- Contact the retailer when a purchased code is missing, damaged, not activated at checkout, or reported as invalid immediately after purchase.
- For a non-Nintendo game, follow the publisher-support instructions printed on the card or game case when the issue concerns activation or the publisher’s platform.
- Contact Nintendo Support for a Nintendo title when the code, region, account, release, and purchase-history checks do not explain the error.
Keep the receipt, card, order confirmation, exact error message, Nintendo Account username, and purchase date available. Do not send a complete unused code in a public forum or to an unverified person claiming to provide support.
A safe buying and redemption checklist
- Identify whether the item is a game/DLC code, an eShop Card, or a Game Voucher.
- Confirm that the seller’s region matches the Nintendo Account country that will use the code.
- Check the title, edition, DLC scope, and release date before paying.
- Choose the Nintendo Account that should permanently own the entitlement.
- Keep the receipt or physical card until the game appears in the account’s purchase history.
- Enter the download code rather than a control number, order number, or barcode.
- For online redemption, first open Nintendo eShop on a Switch 2 or Switch with that account.
- For Game Vouchers, verify paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, title eligibility, and the one-year expiration date.
- After redemption, leave the console online and verify that the download begins or that the title is available to redownload.
What to expect after redemption
Redemption grants a digital entitlement to the selected Nintendo Account. The console still needs an internet connection to download the game, and the storage requirement depends on the title. A code does not transfer ownership to every user profile on every console; access follows Nintendo’s account and console-sharing rules.
If you redeemed online, use the receiving account on the Switch 2 or Switch and check HOME or the account’s redownload options. If the confirmation email arrives but the title is absent, verify that the console user is linked to the same Nintendo Account shown in the email and purchase history.
Bottom line
Buy a region-compatible code from a seller you can verify, redeem it while signed in to the Nintendo Account that should own the game, and use the console’s Enter Code option or Nintendo’s browser redemption page. Treat eShop Cards as account funding and Game Vouchers as account-bound, eligible-title offers with a one-year expiry. When a code fails, check the code type, characters, region, account, release date, and purchase history before contacting the retailer or Nintendo.
