A used PS5 game is safest to buy when you know exactly what you’re getting: a physical disc, the right game and edition, a disc drive that works with your console, and a seller whose condition description and return terms you understand. Don’t pay for someone else’s account or digital library as a substitute for owning a disc.
Will a used PS5 game work on your console?
It depends on the format of the game and your exact PS5 model. A physical disc needs a compatible, working disc drive. A digital game is accessed through a PlayStation account, not by inserting a disc. Before paying, confirm that the listing is for the format you want and that your console can use it.
Sony’s U.S. support instructions specifically state that a PS4 game disc requires a PS5 console with a disc drive. Before comparing prices, establish three things: the exact game and edition, whether the listing is for a disc or account-based access, and whether your console can use that format. These are separate checks. A listing can be for the right game but the wrong edition, or for a disc that your console has no compatible drive to read. If a seller’s photos, description, and answers do not resolve any of those points, pause rather than assuming.

Read the listing title and description closely, not just the cover image. Ask the seller to state explicitly whether the item is a physical disc, a code, or access through an account. A photo of a game case does not by itself confirm that the disc is included, while a promise of “digital access” does not mean a code will be supplied. For a disc purchase, ask what is included in the sale and whether the photos show the actual item.
Sony describes PlayStation Store content in its U.S. Terms of Service as a personal, non-commercial license. The terms also warn that closing an account can mean losing access to purchased content. That is a different arrangement from buying a used disc, which you can insert when playing a compatible game.
PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play is a feature for an account owner’s purchased and downloaded games and media on an enabled PS5. Sony says other users on that console can play that content, including offline, and can access some PlayStation Plus benefits. This feature is not an endorsement of reselling accounts or sharing credentials with a stranger.
How to check a used game listing before you pay
- Confirm the format. Ask the seller to confirm whether the item is a physical disc, a digital code, or account-based access. If you want a used game you can insert and keep, the listing must actually include the disc. Do not infer the format from a broad title such as “PS5 game” or from a stock cover image.
- Match the title and edition. Check the exact game name and edition shown in the listing, and ask what is included. If the seller’s description and photos do not make the format or edition clear, get an answer before paying. Compare what each listing actually includes; don’t treat differently named editions or bundles as interchangeable based only on the main game title.
- Read the condition description carefully. Look for clear photos of the disc and case, and ask about visible damage or missing items. Sony’s used-product advice recommends checking a seller’s ratings and inspecting the item; its hardware-specific inspection points should not be mistaken for disc checks. For a game, focus on the disc and the contents the seller says are included. For a console in the same listing, inspect the hardware separately.
- Review the seller’s history. Sony recommends checking seller ratings when buying used PlayStation products. Read feedback and look for a description that is consistent with the photographs and the seller’s answers. A strong rating does not prove that a particular disc works, so consider the listing-specific evidence too.
- Clarify returns in writing. Check the actual merchant or marketplace policy and the individual seller’s terms before paying. There is no single used-game return policy that applies to every seller or location, and local consumer protections can differ. Save or retain the written terms so you know what the seller has said about returns if the item does not match the listing.
- Compare the full cost. When deciding between listings, consider the exact title and edition, physical versus digital access, condition evidence, seller reputation, written return terms, and total price after shipping or fees. A lower displayed price alone does not establish that a listing is the better choice. Compare like with like: a disc listing and an account-access offer do not provide the same thing.
If you are uncertain about an important detail, ask a direct question before paying: “Is the physical disc included?”, “Which edition is this?”, “Are the photos of the actual item?”, or “What is your return policy if it does not match the description?” Keep the answers with the listing details. This is especially useful when comparing two offers: one seller may provide clearer evidence or better-defined terms even if the displayed price is higher.

Be cautious about unusually cheap offers, unsolicited messages, and QR-code promotions. Sony warns that scammers may impersonate support or offer exclusive opportunities, and advises using trusted QR codes. Do not follow an unexpected message asking you to sign in or provide account information. A seller should not need your PlayStation password to sell you a physical game.
What to verify when buying a used console or bundle
If the game comes with a used PS5, or you are buying the console separately, check the hardware as well as the disc. Sony’s used-product guidance is primarily about hardware, so its checks for overheating, image quality, damage, seals, and serial numbers apply to a console—not to a game disc.

- Ask for a short video showing the console powering on. If online access matters to you, ask to see it connect to the internet and access PlayStation services. Sony recommends video evidence of relevant functions for used products.
- Test the functions that matter for the bundle, including the disc drive when applicable. Recheck them in person if possible; a video does not establish the console’s condition at the time you receive it.
- Inspect image quality and look for visible damage or signs of overheating. Sony also advises checking for broken seals or removed serial numbers.
- If you need PlayStation services, verify that the console can access them. Sony warns that a product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from those services.

For a bundle, separate the checks instead of letting a working console stand in for a working game, or vice versa. Confirm which games are physical discs and which, if any, are being offered as digital access. Ask the seller to demonstrate the console’s disc drive with a disc when applicable, and inspect the game disc itself. Sony’s suggested video evidence can help show relevant functions, but the checks should match the items actually included in the sale.
A console check matters most when your purchase depends on hardware features or online access. Sony says to verify relevant functions such as power-on, internet connection, buttons, ports, and the disc drive. The full list is console-oriented: buttons, ports, overheating, image quality, seals, and serial numbers are not checks for a loose game disc. Use the condition description and disc photos for the game, and hardware inspection for the console.
Keep your own account credentials private. Sony warns that account sharing compromises security and violates its Terms of Service; someone with access to an account may change its sign-in information and lock out the owner. If a seller asks for your password, offers a game only through their login, or wants you to keep their account on your console, walk away. You should be able to assess and buy a used physical disc without handing over your account details.

How to play a used disc on PS5
Once you have confirmed compatibility and inspected the item, follow the console’s on-screen prompts. Sony’s instructions for PS4 game discs on PS5 are to insert the disc, select the game hub, and download any required update. The disc must stay inserted whenever you play that PS4 disc game.
- Insert the disc into a PS5 with a compatible working disc drive.
- Select the game hub when it appears on the console.
- Download any update the console requires before or during play.
- Leave the disc inserted for each session. For PS4 game discs on PS5, Sony explicitly says it is required each time you play.
Follow the console’s prompts if an update or installation is required. The disc is still needed to establish access for play; an update does not turn a used disc into a digital purchase. Keep the format distinction in mind after installation: for the PS4-disc instructions cited above, the disc is required each time you play, not just during setup.
If you have a Digital Edition console, do not buy a physical disc expecting to play it without a compatible drive. Sony specifically says PS4 discs cannot be used with the PS5 Digital Edition. For a newer revision or an accessory-based drive setup, check Sony’s support information for that exact model and configuration before you arrange payment. Compatibility should be confirmed before buying, not discovered after a return window or seller deadline has passed.
What to do if the disc will not read
A read error can come from the disc or the console’s drive. Sony’s basic troubleshooting sequence helps separate those possibilities; it does not guarantee that cleaning will repair a scratched or damaged disc.
- Check the disc for dirt or fingerprints. Wipe them with a soft, clean cloth, then try the disc again.
- Try another compatible game disc or supported Blu-ray/DVD in the same console. If other discs work, the problem may follow the game disc; if several supported discs fail, the console or drive may be the issue.

Sony states that PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs. What the January 2028 disc-production announcement means for used games
On July 1, 2026, Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Content Communications at Sony Interactive Entertainment, wrote on PlayStation.Blog: “Physical disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” Sony’s announcement says the change does not affect games that already released, or that will release before January 2028, in disc format.
The announcement concerns production of future new physical releases. It does not establish how many used copies will be available, what they will cost, or whether any particular existing game will remain easy to find. For a purchase now, the practical checks remain the same: confirm the disc, the console compatibility, the item’s condition, and the seller’s terms. Do not treat a future production date as a guarantee about a specific game’s used supply or price.
