On both PS5 and Xbox, buying a digital game means purchasing it through the platform’s own store with the account that will play it, then downloading it to the console. Before paying, confirm the platform, edition, age rating, compatibility notices, and listed requirements.
The PlayStation process can be completed on a PS5, in a web browser, or in the PlayStation App. Xbox uses the Microsoft Store on the console and its associated online interfaces; menu names can change with system updates and region, so follow the current labels shown on your Xbox.
Before you buy: five checks that prevent most mistakes
A digital purchase is tied to the store account used to complete it. Sign in to the account that should own and access the game, and make sure the console is connected to the internet. Sony’s PS5 quick-start guidance specifically states that an internet connection and a signed-in account are required to purchase and download games.
- Platform: Confirm that the listing is for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or a version that explicitly supports your console. A title can have separate editions for different generations.
- Edition: Read the complete edition name. Standard, deluxe, ultimate, cross-generation, bundle, and add-on listings can contain different content and prices.
- Age rating: Check the rating shown for your country or region and any parental-control restrictions on the account.
- Compatibility and requirements: Look for notices about console generation, required online services, supported languages, or other conditions shown on the store page.
- Storage and connection: Check available console storage and use a stable connection. The store may let you purchase before the download can fit, so checking space first avoids an interrupted installation.
Prices, taxes, currencies, payment methods, refunds, and release dates vary by region and can change. Review the final checkout screen rather than relying on a price shown in a search result or an earlier promotion.

Buy and download a game directly on PS5
The following sequence uses the current PlayStation Store and Game Library concepts. Individual wording can differ slightly after a PS5 system update.
1. Open PlayStation Store and sign in
- Turn on the PS5 and select the user account that should own the game.
- Open PlayStation Store from the home screen.
- If prompted, sign in to the intended PlayStation account. Do not complete the purchase under a different family member’s account unless that is deliberately the owning account.
2. Find the exact game
- Use the store search and enter the game title.
- Select the game’s product page rather than an unrelated add-on, soundtrack, trial, or in-game currency listing.
- Read the platform label and edition name on the product page.
3. Verify the listing before checkout
Check the age rating, compatibility notices, and system requirements shown on the page. If the listing offers several editions, open each description and compare included content. A PS4 listing may not provide the PS5 version automatically, while a cross-generation package may explicitly include both; rely on the wording of the specific product page.
4. Add the game or pre-order to your cart
- Select Add to Cart for an available game, or choose the pre-order option if the title has not released.
- Review the cart for the correct edition, quantity, and total.
- Choose an available payment method or redeem store credit if your account offers one.
5. Confirm the purchase
Read the final confirmation screen, including the account, edition, price, and any release timing. Select the confirmation control to complete payment. Keep the receipt or confirmation email for your records.

6. Start the download
- After purchase, choose Download if the store presents that option.
- If you leave the product page, open Game Library from the PS5 home screen.
- Select Your Collection, locate the purchased game, and choose Download.
- You can also return to the game’s PlayStation Store page and select Download there when the purchase is recognized.
The PS5 places the title in the download queue. You can monitor progress from the downloads/uploads view. A game may become playable before every file has finished downloading, but features that depend on later files will remain unavailable until installation completes.
7. Launch after installation
When the download and installation finish, select the game from the home screen or Game Library. Some games require an additional update, an account for the game publisher, or an online connection for particular modes. Those requirements are separate from the store purchase and should be shown on the game’s listing or in its startup screens.
Buy a PS5 game from a phone or computer
You do not have to use the console to purchase a PlayStation digital game. PlayStation supports purchasing through the online PlayStation Store and the PlayStation App. Use the same PlayStation account that is signed in on the PS5.

Using a web browser
- Open the official PlayStation Store in a browser and sign in.
- Search for the game and open its full product page.
- Confirm the PS5 platform, edition, age rating, compatibility information, and requirements.
- Select the purchase or pre-order option, review the cart, and confirm payment.
- Open your game library after the transaction and choose the download option if it is available for your PS5.
Using the PlayStation App
- Open the PlayStation App and sign in to the account linked to your console.
- Search for the title and open the correct product page.
- Check the edition and platform information before confirming the purchase.
- Complete checkout, then use the app’s download-to-console control when offered.
Remote downloads require the PS5 to be connected to the internet and associated with the same account. If the console is fully powered off or not configured to remain available for remote features, the app may not be able to start the download immediately; turning on the console and downloading from Game Library is the fallback.

How to download a PS5 game you already bought
PlayStation purchases remain available in your online game library, so uninstalling a game does not require buying it again. To reinstall it:
- Sign in to the PlayStation account that made the purchase.
- Open Game Library on the PS5.
- Choose Your Collection and find the title. Use the search or sorting controls if the library is large.
- Select the game and choose Download.
You can also start a reinstall from the PlayStation Store page or initiate a remote download from a browser or smartphone. The console still needs enough free storage and an internet connection to complete the installation.

If the game is missing from the library
- Check that you are signed in to the account that purchased it; another household account may not display the item in its own collection.
- Search the store for the exact title and edition. A bundle or cross-generation purchase may appear under a different product entry.
- Review the transaction history or purchase confirmation to verify that checkout completed.
- Restart the PS5 and sign in again if the purchase has completed but the library has not refreshed.
Buy and download a digital game on Xbox
Xbox purchases are made through the Microsoft Store on the console or through Microsoft’s current Xbox/Microsoft Store web and mobile interfaces. Sign in with the Microsoft account that should own the game, search for the exact title, verify the Xbox platform and edition, and complete checkout. The purchased item should then be available through the account’s Xbox game library for installation.
Microsoft updates dashboard layouts and button labels, and the wording can differ between Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, web, mobile, and regional storefronts. For that reason, use the labels currently displayed in your Microsoft Store or Xbox interface rather than relying on an old button-by-button guide. If a purchase made on the web does not appear on the console, open the store while signed in to the same Microsoft account and refresh the library or restart the console.
Xbox checks before confirming payment
- Confirm whether the listing is for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or a package that supports both.
- Read the edition description so you know whether expansions, cosmetic items, or a second-generation upgrade are included.
- Check the age rating, compatibility notices, and any required online service shown in the listing.
- Review the final regional price and payment method on the Microsoft checkout screen.
Starting the Xbox installation
After checkout, use the store’s install or download control if it is shown. Otherwise, open the console’s library or owned-games area, select the title, and choose the install control presented there. Because the exact menu path is subject to Xbox software updates, follow the current on-screen wording. If you are unsure which account owns the game, sign out and back in with the account used at checkout before troubleshooting the download.

What happens to a digital game after you buy it?
The purchase is retained in the account library
On PlayStation, a completed purchase remains in the online library and can be downloaded again after you uninstall the local copy. Deleting the installed files frees storage; it does not erase the purchase from the account. Xbox similarly presents owned digital content through the Microsoft account’s game library, subject to the platform’s current licensing and availability rules.
Buying is separate from downloading
Checkout records the purchase, while downloading copies the game files to the console. A slow connection, an unavailable server, or insufficient storage can delay installation without changing whether checkout succeeded. Check the account’s order history before attempting to pay a second time.
Pre-orders and unreleased games
A pre-order may be available for purchase before the release date, but it cannot be played until the platform makes the title available. The store page should show the expected release information and any pre-load option. Confirm the edition and release region before placing a pre-order.
Troubleshooting purchase and download problems
The store will not let you buy the game
- Verify that you are online and signed in to the intended account.
- Check parental controls, age restrictions, and regional availability.
- Confirm that the payment method or store balance covers the final total, including any displayed tax.
- Look for a different product entry if the game has separate PS4/PS5 or Xbox One/Series editions.
The purchase completed but no download started
- Open Game Library on PS5 or the owned-games/library area on Xbox and locate the title manually.
- Refresh the store, restart the console, and sign in again with the purchasing account.
- Check the download queue for a paused, failed, or waiting item.
- Review free storage and remove or move unneeded games before retrying.
The download is very slow or stops
- Use a stable internet connection and avoid interrupting the console while it processes the download.
- Pause other downloads or updates if the platform allows it.
- Restart the console and resume the queued download.
- Check the platform’s service-status information if multiple store functions fail at once.
The game appears to be the wrong version
Stop before launching a second purchase. Return to the product page and compare the edition and platform labels with the confirmation receipt. Some purchases include more than one console generation, while others require a separate version. If the listing and receipt do not match, use the platform’s official purchase-support process and provide the transaction details.
The game was uninstalled and now cannot be found
Search the account library rather than the home-screen icon. On PS5, use Game Library and Your Collection; on Xbox, use the current owned-games or library view. Confirm the original account first, because a title bought by another account may not appear in your personal collection.

- Connect the console to the internet.
- Sign in to the account that should own the game.
- Search the platform’s official store.
- Open the exact product page, not an add-on or bundle you do not want.
- Check platform generation, edition, age rating, compatibility notices, and requirements.
- Review the regional price and payment details on the final checkout screen.
- Complete the purchase once.
- Download from the store or the account’s game library.
- Confirm enough storage and let installation finish before deleting the download queue item.
- Keep the purchase confirmation in case account or payment support is needed.
