A short benchmark can show how quickly an SSD handles an initial burst, but it may not show how the drive performs during a long, sustained write. If you regularly move large files, capture video, or run write-heavy workloads, compare sustained-performance results that resemble your use—not just peak speeds. Also check endurance, workload fit, and system compatibility; each answers a different buying question.
Why can an SSD slow down during a large transfer?
Some SSDs use caching behavior that can make early writes look fast. Once that temporary behavior no longer applies, performance may differ. The amount of data involved and the change in speed depend on the specific drive and workload; there is no single cache size or slowdown rate that applies to every SSD.
Kingston says it preconditions SSDs before recording performance data so a drive reaches a steady-state performance profile. That distinction matters when reading benchmarks: a brief test can describe burst behavior, while a long-duration or steady-state test can better reflect performance after the initial phase. Kingston also cautions that some client-drive caching schemes may not suit large workloads. Kingston’s SSD buying guidance explains its approach.
What performance evidence should you look for?
- Long-duration writes: Prefer tests that continue long enough to reveal performance beyond the initial burst.
- Steady-state results: Look for a described preconditioning or steady-state method, rather than relying only on peak figures.
- Workload similarity: Check whether the test resembles your own write pattern, file sizes, and use. Solidigm recommends matching SSDs to workload I/O characteristics and considering latency, IOPS, and throughput as distinct performance measures. See Solidigm’s SSD workload guidance.
These sources explain what to compare, but they do not provide an independent cross-model ranking. A result from a different workload is not a guarantee of the same performance in your system.

How do you match an SSD to your workload?
Intermittent everyday use
For typical desktop use, occasional file copies, or other intermittent writes, a client SSD may be a sensible fit. A short burst can be relevant to that pattern, but it should not be treated as proof of the same speed during a prolonged write.
Frequent or continuous writes
If your work repeatedly writes large amounts of data, prioritize workload-relevant sustained results and compare the drive’s endurance rating with your expected writes and service period. Kingston’s enterprise SSD guidance frames selection around workload type, endurance, and interface, and describes enterprise drives as suited to sustained, high-demand work. That does not mean every heavy desktop user needs an enterprise drive; it means continuity and workload demands belong in the choice. See Kingston’s enterprise SSD guidance.

Work where power loss or data integrity is a key concern
When a workload cannot tolerate interruption or data-path errors, compare relevant enterprise features such as power-loss protection and end-to-end data-path protection. Their presence and implementation are product-specific; confirm them in the exact drive’s specifications rather than assuming they come with every SSD in a category.

What do TBW and DWPD tell you?
TBW and DWPD are endurance measures, not speed ratings. TBW is the total write volume a drive is rated to support under its warranty terms. DWPD expresses how many times the drive’s user capacity may be written per day over the specified warranty period. Neither tells you how fast the drive will write a particular large transfer.

Kingston’s examples illustrate how to interpret the numbers, not what buyers should expect from all drives. Its 2024 guidance gives a 3,504 TBW rating for an example 1.92 TB SSD. It also works through a 7.68 TB drive rated at 14,016 TBW over five years as 1 DWPD. In Kingston’s undated technical guidance, 1 DWPD means writing 100% of user capacity per day over the warranty period. The exact rating and warranty basis vary by product; consult the specific model’s terms. See Kingston’s SSD endurance explanation and Kingston’s DWPD calculation guidance.
Use the rating to judge whether the drive’s rated write allowance fits your expected workload and intended service period. It is not a predicted failure date, and it should not be mistaken for a benchmark result.

Can over-provisioning help with heavy writes?
Over-provisioning reserves some capacity for the SSD controller rather than making it available as ordinary user storage. Kingston describes reserved capacity as useful to the controller and provides examples where write-intensive performance and endurance differ. The benefit depends on the drive and workload, so treat it as a factor to investigate—not a guaranteed fix or a universal rule. See Kingston’s over-provisioning explanation.

What should you verify before buying?
- Describe the workload: Note how often you write, how large the transfers are, and whether writes are intermittent or continuous.
- Check sustained-performance evidence: Find long-duration or steady-state tests that resemble that pattern, not only short burst or peak results.
- Assess endurance separately: Compare the exact drive’s TBW or DWPD rating and warranty basis with your expected writes and intended service period.
- Confirm fit: Verify the drive’s interface, form factor, capacity, and compatibility with your computer or other host. Category-level guidance cannot establish fit for an unspecified system.
- Review workload-specific features: For continuous or integrity-critical use, check whether the exact model provides the protection and operating characteristics your workload requires.
- Consider available space and over-provisioning: Check the manufacturer’s guidance for the model, and avoid assuming that reserving capacity will produce a specific improvement.
