Yes, you can import an HMD or Nokia phone safely—but only after treating it as a compatibility, regulatory, tax and after-sales decision rather than a simple price comparison. First confirm the exact regional model, your carrier’s bands and VoLTE requirements, local certification and IMEI rules, the phone’s unlocked status, the complete landed cost, and the return and warranty route. If an authorized local channel exists, it is normally the lower-risk choice.
Decide whether importing is sensible
An overseas phone can be genuine and still be a poor purchase in your country. A model may lack a frequency band used by your carrier, fail local type-approval rules, require an IMEI registration that you did not budget for, or carry a warranty that is unusable outside the sale region. A cheap listing is therefore not evidence of a cheap phone.
Use this decision rule before paying:
- Buy locally when an HMD-authorized retailer or carrier sells the same model with a local invoice and service route.
- Consider importing only when the model is unavailable locally and you can document compatibility, legal import requirements, total cost and a realistic return path.
- Do not proceed when the seller will not disclose the model code, IMEI, network bands, invoice terms or who handles a defective-device claim.
Country rules change quickly. Brazil, Indonesia and Egypt illustrate the checks every importer should make; their rules are examples, not a universal legal template.
What “not officially sold” changes
Warranty is usually geographic
HMD’s 2024 Manufacturer’s Limited Warranty says: This Warranty is only applicable in the country or region where the Product was purchased through Manufacturer’s authorised sales channels, provided that the Product was intended for sale in that country or region.
In practical terms, an imported phone bought through an unauthorized marketplace, or a model intended for another region, may not receive manufacturer warranty service where you live.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatibility: The Nokia 105 4G works with GSM carriers like T-Mobile and T-Mobile subsidiaries, but not AT&T, Cricket, Verizon or Verizon/AT&T subsidiaries.
- Large buttons and zoomed menus for easy navigation on the 1.8" display
- Stay connected with crisp, clear calls over 4G VoLTE
- Long 12 hour battery life to keep you talking and texting
- Rear camera, LED flashlight, games, and FM radio for entertainment
The same warranty states that coverage starts on the first sale to an end user, evidenced by the original proof of purchase or an approved equivalent that matches the device activation. It specifies 12 months for the product and six months for included accessories in the covered country or region. Keep the original invoice and activation details; a bank statement or marketplace order page may not contain enough information for a claim.
Ask in writing whether HMD will service the exact model in your country, where a repair would be performed, who pays shipping in both directions, and whether the seller—not HMD—must handle the claim. Do not assume that “international warranty” in a listing overrides the manufacturer’s published terms or your local consumer law.
Support and parts may be local only
HMD describes HMD Support as the authorized customer-support channel for HMD and Nokia branded phones and tablets made by Human Mobile Devices. Support, replacement stock, language options, chargers and repair centers can nevertheless vary by country. A support agent may be able to troubleshoot an imported device while declining local repair or replacement. Obtain a written answer for the exact model code rather than relying on the product family name.
Certification can determine whether the phone connects at all
Telecom regulators often require type approval (also called homologation) before a radio device can be activated. Approval tests can cover electrical safety, radio-frequency emissions, interoperability, batteries and chargers. A phone that works technically on a foreign network can still be blocked because its model is not approved for your market.
Step 1: Check official availability and support first
- Check HMD’s country store, product pages and support pages for your destination country. Record whether the exact model—not merely a similar name—is listed.
- Contact HMD Support and ask whether the model code, storage capacity and SIM configuration are eligible for warranty or paid repair in your country. Save the reply as a PDF or screenshot.
- Check local authorized retailers and carriers for the same model. Compare their invoice, return period and repair route with the overseas offer.
- If the model is absent locally, write down why importing is worthwhile: a specific form factor, a supported language, a removable battery, a particular 4G feature or another concrete requirement. This prevents a small discount from becoming an expensive experiment.
HMD’s support catalog includes the Nokia 105 4G 2nd Edition. That listing establishes that the product exists, not that every regional variant is interchangeable or that marketplace stock is authorized. Confirm the model code and local coverage at checkout. The same caution applies to accessories such as an HMD Charging Cradle: verify exact compatibility before ordering.
Step 2: Identify the exact regional variant
Never buy from a title such as “Nokia 105 4G” or “HMD phone” alone. A family name can cover several regional versions with different radios, SIM trays, firmware, chargers and approval numbers. Request the following in writing:
- Full model number and hardware revision.
- Storage and memory configuration.
- Single-SIM or dual-SIM layout, including whether both slots support 4G.
- Complete 2G, 3G, 4G LTE and 5G band list, if applicable.
- VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling support for your intended carrier.
- Software or sales region, language support and update policy.
- Charger plug type, input rating and included accessories.
- Whether the device is new, refurbished, open-box or previously activated.
Ask for a photograph of the retail label and, where lawful, the settings screen showing the model and IMEI. Blur personal information but leave the model identifier legible. A seller who sends only a stock image has not established which variant you will receive.

Match bands and network technologies, not just “unlocked” status
“Unlocked” normally means that the phone accepts another carrier’s SIM; it does not add missing radio bands or local certification. Compare the manufacturer’s specification for the exact model with every intended carrier’s published bands. Check the low-frequency bands used for rural coverage and indoor reach, not only the headline urban bands. Confirm that the carrier permits bring-your-own-device activation and supports the phone’s VoLTE profile. Some networks have retired 3G and require VoLTE for voice calls, even when 4G data appears to work.
For an imported dual-SIM phone, verify whether both IMEIs are recognized and whether the carrier permits two registrations. A phone can have two physical SIM slots but support only one 4G voice registration at a time.
Step 3: Check local certification, customs and IMEI rules
Use your telecom regulator’s approval database
Search the destination regulator for the model code and approval number. Approved devices commonly carry a label or database entry that identifies the homologated version. Do not infer approval from a foreign certification mark or from the fact that another seller ships the same model.
Brazil’s Anatel advises consumers to buy mobile phones that have undergone its homologation process. Its guidance says buyers of phones acquired abroad should check the manufacturer’s manual or website for compatibility with Brazilian frequency bands. It also warns that imported models without homologation may be inspected, unable to activate, or blocked. Anatel’s tests address safety, radio emissions, interoperability, batteries and chargers. The lesson for every country is the same: check the local approval record before dispatch, not after a failed activation.

Find out whether IMEI registration is mandatory
The IMEI is the device’s network identity. A clean-looking phone can still lose service if its IMEI is absent, duplicated, reported stolen or not registered under local import rules. Check every IMEI on a dual-SIM device; the second slot has its own identifier.
Indonesia’s Directorate General of Customs and Excise states that phones brought or shipped from abroad need IMEI registration to obtain Indonesian cellular service. Its published passenger-import example lists 10% import duty, 12% VAT and a USD500 personal-goods deduction under the cited rules. The deduction and rates are tied to that guidance and can change, so verify the current calculation for your arrival method and date.
Egypt’s National Telecom Regulatory Authority tells buyers to verify the 15-digit IMEI in the Telephony app, obtain a tax invoice and check that the device meets approved technical specifications. It warns that non-compliant phones can be blocked. The NTRA’s 29 January 2025 notice calls on users to verify compliance before completing the purchase.
These examples show why customs, tax and telecom checks belong in the buying decision. A device may clear the border yet remain unable to use local cellular service until registration or payment is complete.

- Can the buyer register the phone personally, or must the importer do it?
- Is registration possible before arrival, at the airport, through a carrier or only through a government app?
- What documents are required: passport, invoice, customs declaration, tax receipt or proof of travel?
- Is there a deadline after first network attachment?
- Are there limits on the number of imported devices or a personal-use exemption?
- Can an unregistered phone still use Wi-Fi, and for how long?
Save the regulator’s instructions and your payment receipt. A marketplace seller’s assurance that “customs is included” does not prove that the IMEI has been entered into the national registry.
Step 4: Verify the seller and the phone’s identity
Prefer an authorized retailer or a marketplace seller with a verifiable business identity, a tax invoice and a return address in your jurisdiction. Look for a history of completed sales, but treat ratings as supporting evidence rather than proof of authorization.
Before dispatch, request the exact model and IMEI if local law permits. HMD provides an IMEI/PSN warranty checker that requires the device identifier and location. Use it to see whether the identifier is recognized and whether the warranty location matches the seller’s claim. The result is not a substitute for a purchase invoice: it can show an activation or warranty date that does not match a “new” listing.
Compare every identifier:
| Where to check | What must match | What a mismatch suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Retail box label | Model code, serial number and each IMEI | Repacked, substituted or incorrectly listed unit |
| Settings or diagnostic screen | Model and IMEI for each SIM slot | Different hardware from the photographed box |
| Invoice | Seller, date, model and identifying number where shown | Weak warranty and tax evidence |
| Manufacturer warranty checker | Recognized identifier and plausible activation status | Unrecognized, already-activated or questionable device |
| National IMEI registry | Permitted or clean status, where a public check exists | Potential block, duplicate or stolen-device report |
The International Telecommunication Union’s 2026 equipment-identity guidance describes permitted, tracked and blocked lists for irregular or counterfeit equipment. A listing that looks authentic is therefore not enough; use the manufacturer and, where available, national checks.
Step 5: Calculate the real landed cost
Write the full cost in one currency before comparing offers. Include recurring and one-time charges separately.
| Cost component | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Phone price | Is it new, refurbished, open-box or previously activated? |
| Shipping and insurance | Who bears loss or damage in transit? |
| Import duty | What rate applies to the phone’s customs classification and declared value? |
| VAT, GST or sales tax | Is tax collected at checkout or on delivery? |
| Brokerage and handling | Will the courier add a clearance fee? |
| Certification or IMEI fee | Is a local approval or registration payment required per device? |
| Accessories and adapter | Does the charger fit your outlet and meet local electrical requirements? |
| Return shipment | What would it cost to send a defective phone overseas? |
| Repair or replacement reserve | Would a local shop have parts, or must the unit travel internationally? |
Use the total—not the sticker price—to compare an import with a locally supported alternative. A discount can disappear after duty, VAT, brokerage and one international return shipment. If the seller will not state the declared value, tax treatment or return destination, calculate the worst case rather than assuming zero charges.
Step 6: Put warranty and returns in writing
Send the seller a short, specific message before ordering:

Save the response with the listing and payment receipt. If the seller changes an answer after payment, the written version is useful for a marketplace dispute or card claim. A promise in a chat window is not the same as a manufacturer warranty, but it is still evidence of what was represented.

- Seller name, business address, marketplace profile and support contact.
- Invoice, payment confirmation and customs declaration.
- Model code, serial number and every IMEI from the box and settings screen.

Do not discard the box until the return period and any registration deadline have passed. Photograph the device before inserting a SIM so that damage or a wrong variant can be documented immediately.
What to do when the phone arrives
- Inspect before powering on. Compare seals, model code, color, storage and IMEI labels with the listing and invoice. Photograph anything inconsistent.
- Check identifiers. Open the settings page or dial the device’s IMEI display code, then compare every identifier with the box and manufacturer checker.
- Verify software region. Confirm language options, update channel, preinstalled carrier applications and emergency-call behavior.
- Test without committing your primary number. Use a spare or prepaid SIM first. Test registration, calls, SMS, data, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, roaming and both SIM slots where applicable.
- Complete legal registration. Submit the IMEI and customs documents through the official national process, then keep the approval or payment receipt.
- Test charging and accessories safely. Use the supplied charger or a compatible, certified local adapter with the correct input rating. Do not force a plug or rely on an unmarked adapter.
- Decide inside the return window. If a band, certification, IMEI or warranty promise fails, stop using the phone as your main device and start the documented return immediately.
Common failure modes and the right response
The phone shows signal but calls fail
Check whether your carrier requires VoLTE after a 3G shutdown. Confirm that VoLTE is enabled and that the exact model’s firmware supports the carrier profile. If data works but voice does not, a missing VoLTE profile or unsupported band is more likely than a faulty SIM. Ask the carrier to verify the IMEI and device eligibility; do not assume a factory reset will add missing support.
The SIM is rejected or the phone says “network locked”
Ask the original seller or foreign carrier for an official unlock. A third-party code may violate the carrier’s terms or fail permanently. Keep the request and response in writing. An unlocked bootloader, dual-SIM slot or ability to roam does not prove that the SIM lock has been removed.

Stop trying random registration services. Recheck all digits, including the second IMEI, and compare the device, box and invoice. Contact the customs or telecom authority using its official channel and provide the purchase and import documents. If the identifier differs from the invoice or manufacturer record, open a seller dispute promptly; the seller may have sent a substituted or counterfeit unit.
Customs demands more money than expected
Request the written assessment showing declared value, classification, duty, VAT or GST and brokerage. Compare it with the current customs guidance for your country. Do not ask a seller to underdeclare the value: that can invalidate insurance, create a penalty and leave you without proof of the phone’s real price.
The manufacturer refuses local warranty service
Ask for the refusal and the applicable warranty clause in writing. Then contact the seller under the promised return terms and your payment provider’s dispute process if the listing represented local coverage. HMD’s published warranty is tied to the country or region of authorized sale, so an overseas seller may be your practical service counter even when the phone is genuine.
The device is counterfeit or previously activated
Do not install banking apps or transfer sensitive data. Photograph the labels, check the IMEI with HMD and the national registry where available, and preserve the packaging. Request a return or marketplace investigation. A recognized IMEI alone does not prove that every internal component is genuine, but a mismatch between model, software and packaging is a strong warning.
Import versus local purchase: a practical comparison
| Decision factor | Imported phone | Locally supported phone |
|---|---|---|
| Total cost | Price plus shipping, tax, duty, brokerage, registration and possible overseas returns | Usually clearer at checkout, with local tax and return costs shown |
| Carrier compatibility | Must be checked against the exact regional variant and VoLTE profile | Often selected for local networks, but still verify the model |
| Certification and IMEI | Buyer may need to complete approval or registration | Retailer or importer may already have completed those steps |
| Warranty | May be limited to the original sale country or seller | More likely to have a local repair or replacement route |
| Returns | International shipping, customs and currency risk | Usually a domestic address and local consumer-law process |
| Software and accessories | Possible regional language, update and plug differences | Configured for the destination market more often |
| Seller traceability | Depends on a foreign marketplace or exporter | Local invoice and business identity are easier to verify |
Compare these six axes together: landed cost, carrier-band and VoLTE compatibility, certification and IMEI certainty, warranty and return logistics, software and language support, and seller traceability. A local alternative can be the better value even when its sticker price is higher.
A concise pre-payment checklist
- Exact model code and regional variant recorded.
- All intended carrier bands and VoLTE requirements matched.
- Factory-unlocked status confirmed in writing.
- Local type approval or homologation checked.
- IMEI registration steps, deadlines and fees understood.
- Duty, VAT/GST, brokerage and certification costs calculated.
- Seller identity, tax invoice and return address verified.
- HMD warranty location, term and shipping responsibility confirmed.
- Manufacturer IMEI/PSN check completed where possible.
- Return route remains affordable if the phone is wrong or blocked.
If any item remains unknown, the purchase is not yet safe. Wait for a written answer or choose a channel that can provide one.
