To buy Amazon stock, open a brokerage account, select a cash or margin account, fund it, search for Amazon.com, Inc. or the ticker AMZN, choose an order type, review the details, and submit. Amazon’s common stock trades on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under AMZN, according to the company’s 2025 Form 10-K.
The mechanics are straightforward, but the right account, costs, order instructions, taxes, investor protections, and access depend on your country and circumstances. Buying one company also leaves you exposed to company-specific losses, so treat this as a process guide—not a recommendation that AMZN is appropriate for you.
What Amazon stock is and where it trades

Before you place an order
Check your country and account eligibility
This guide uses U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) investor-education sources and a U.S. company filing. Brokerage availability, identity checks, investor protections, trading hours, currency conversion, withholding, reporting and tax treatment can differ outside the United States. Confirm that a broker legally serves your residence and that you understand the rules that apply to your account.
Decide whether a single stock fits your plan
Owning only AMZN concentrates your exposure in one issuer. The SEC describes diversification as spreading money among investments with differing risk and return characteristics. Diversification can reduce the effect that one company’s problems have on a portfolio, although it cannot eliminate investment losses. SEC: Investment Products
Do not use money needed for near-term living expenses, emergency reserves or known obligations merely to buy a volatile asset. Establish your time horizon, acceptable loss and overall allocation before deciding how much, if anything, to invest.

A brokerage account is the usual route for buying exchange-listed shares. Instead of selecting a “best” broker for everyone, compare firms that are available in your jurisdiction and offer the features you actually need.
The SEC recommends reading a firm’s relationship summary (Form CRS) and checking its background and disciplinary history before opening an account. The bulletin puts it this way: “Before opening an account with any broker, you should always remember to read the firm’s relationship summary (Form CRS) and check the broker’s background and disciplinary history.” SEC: Investor Bulletin, How to Open a Brokerage Account
- Regulatory status and history: Review the firm’s disclosures, registration and disciplinary information relevant to your country.
- Account choices: Confirm whether the application offers cash, margin, retirement or other account types and which are available to you.
- Costs: Read the schedule for commissions, spreads, currency conversion, wire or transfer charges, account fees and other transaction or service costs. The SEC notes that costs vary among broker-dealers.
- Order support: Check whether the broker supports market and buy-limit orders, fractional shares, order-duration choices and the instructions you intend to use.
- Execution and service: Understand how the firm routes orders, how it reports fills and cancellations, and how you can obtain statements and tax documents.
- Security and access: Use a strong, unique password and multi-factor authentication where offered, and verify how the firm handles account recovery.
Do not assume that an advertised “commission-free” trade means the account has no costs. Read the complete terms and compare the total cost of the service you will use.

Step 2: Open the account and select cash or margin
Applications generally request identity, contact, employment, financial and tax information. Read each screen rather than accepting a default. In particular, confirm whether the application has selected a cash or margin account.

Some applications make margin the default. If you do not intend to borrow, select cash explicitly and verify the account designation in the confirmation documents. If you choose margin, read the interest rates, collateral rules, maintenance requirements and liquidation terms before trading.
Step 3: Fund the account
Transfer money using a funding method supported by the broker. Wait until the funds are available for trading under that broker’s rules; a displayed cash balance and “available to withdraw” or “available to trade” balance may not be identical.
- Transfer only an amount you can afford to expose to market loss.
- Check the transfer currency and any conversion or bank charges.
- Confirm whether the deposit is settled and eligible for the order size you plan to enter.
- Keep a record of the deposit and the source account.
In a cash account, the purchase must be paid in full. Do not place an order that depends on an overdraft or an unconfirmed deposit.
Step 4: Find and verify AMZN
- Sign in to the broker’s trading screen.
- Search for Amazon.com, Inc. or enter AMZN.
- Verify that the result identifies Amazon’s common stock and shows Nasdaq Global Select Market as the listing venue, where the broker provides that information.
- Check the displayed currency, share class and any market-data timestamp.
Several securities can have similar names or symbols. Never rely on a logo or search suggestion alone; match the issuer and ticker before continuing. The issuer and listing information are documented in Amazon’s 2025 Form 10-K.
Step 5: Choose an order type
Your order instruction determines whether you prioritize execution or price control. Brokers can offer different order types and conditions, so read the definitions shown in your trading interface.

When a market order may be appropriate
A market order can be useful when completing the purchase matters more than obtaining a particular price. Review the estimated value and liquidity information your broker supplies, and remember that the quote can change before execution. A market order is not a promise to buy at the last price you saw.
When a buy limit order may be appropriate
A limit order can help prevent paying above a price you specify. It may not execute at all, may execute only partly, or may execute later if the market reaches your limit. Check the order’s duration—such as day or another period—because an unfilled order can expire or remain active according to the broker’s terms.

Step 6: Review, submit and verify the trade
- Review the instrument: Confirm Amazon.com, Inc., AMZN and the intended listing.
- Review the quantity: Check the number of shares or the dollar amount, if your broker supports dollar-based orders.
- Review the instruction: Confirm market or buy limit, the limit price if applicable, duration and any other conditions.
- Review the account: Make sure the order is attached to the intended cash or margin account.
- Review the estimate: Check the estimated trade value, applicable fees, currency and available funds.
- Submit once: Press the final buy or submit control only after checking every field.
- Check status: Look for a filled, partially filled, open, rejected or canceled status and save the confirmation.
- Handle cancellation carefully: If you cancel an open order, verify that the cancellation completed before entering a replacement. Otherwise, both orders could execute.
Online execution is not instantaneous. Your broker receives the instruction, selects an execution venue and sends the order onward; you are not connected directly to an exchange. The quote can move while the instruction is being transmitted. SEC: Executing an Order SEC: Online Investing
Fractional shares: confirm your broker’s rule
Some platforms allow a dollar amount or a fraction of a share, while others require whole shares or limit fractional trading to particular securities and order types. The available evidence does not establish a universal rule for AMZN. Ask the broker directly or read its current fractional-share terms before submitting a dollar-based order.
Check how the broker handles execution, voting rights, dividends, transfers, sell orders and rounding for fractional holdings. Those details can affect what you own and how you can later move or close the position.

Costs, routing and execution details that can change your result
The amount you pay is not determined solely by the quote on the order screen. Possible costs include commissions, account fees, transaction charges, bid-ask spreads, currency conversion and other broker or venue charges. Keep confirmations, statements and cost records. They help you determine what actually filled, identify an accidental duplicate order and support any reporting required by your country’s tax authority. Tax rules are jurisdiction-specific; obtain current guidance for your residence instead of applying a U.S. rule automatically.

Amazon’s 2025 Form 10-K is useful for confirming the issuer, listing and the company’s own disclosures. It reports that common shares outstanding plus shares underlying outstanding stock awards totaled 11.0 billion as of December 31, 2025. That is a company-reported share-count figure, not a prediction of an individual investor’s return or a valuation conclusion. Amazon.com, Inc. 2025 Form 10-K
The filing discusses uncertainties including economic conditions, customer demand and spending, competition, technology and cloud-market developments, operating execution, and legal or regulatory proceedings. These are risks the issuer disclosed; they are not a prediction that any particular event will occur or that AMZN will rise or fall.
Read the latest filing and other current disclosures if you are evaluating the investment itself. Do not infer that a ticker listing means the stock is cheap, safe, suitable or guaranteed to appreciate.

Cash versus margin: a decision check
- Choose cash when: you want to pay the full purchase amount, do not want borrowing interest and are comfortable limiting the trade to settled or otherwise available funds under the broker’s rules.
- Consider margin only after understanding: interest charges, maintenance requirements, margin calls, forced sales, potential losses greater than your initial cash and the broker’s right to change requirements.
- Remember: margin is optional for ordinary ownership of AMZN. A cash account still has market risk; avoiding leverage does not protect you from a falling share price.
Common problems and how to resolve them
The search returns several Amazon-related instruments
Stop and compare the issuer name, ticker, share class, exchange and currency with the broker’s security details. If they do not match Amazon.com, Inc. common stock and AMZN, contact the broker before trading.
The market order filled at a different price
Check the execution timestamp, fill price and quantity in the trade confirmation. A market order does not guarantee a particular price, and the quote can change during transmission. If the result appears inconsistent with the order you submitted, ask the broker’s trade-support team for an execution report.
The limit order did not execute
Compare the limit price with the market prices reached during the order’s active period and check whether it expired, was rejected or remains open. A limit order can fail to fill even when the displayed price briefly appears close to your limit.
The broker rejects the order for insufficient funds
Check the account’s available-to-trade balance, pending deposits, currency and estimated charges. In a cash account, make sure the full purchase amount is available under the broker’s payment rules; do not assume a recent deposit has settled.
You may have submitted the order twice
Open the order-status page before trying again. If one order is open, cancel it and verify cancellation before entering another. Save both the status and confirmation records.
A margin warning appears unexpectedly
Pause the transaction and confirm the account type. If you did not intend to borrow, ask whether the account can be changed to cash and learn how that change affects open positions and pending orders. Do not ignore a margin call; contact the broker immediately and read its liquidation terms.
A practical pre-trade checklist
- I am eligible to use this broker in my country and understand the applicable protections and tax responsibilities.
- I read the firm’s Form CRS, background and disciplinary information.
- I compared account fees, transaction costs, currency charges and supported order types.
- I selected cash or margin deliberately and know whether borrowing is involved.
- My deposit is available for trading and I can afford to lose the amount invested.
- I verified Amazon.com, Inc., ticker AMZN and the Nasdaq Global Select Market listing.
- I chose market or buy limit with a clear understanding of execution and price trade-offs.
- I checked quantity or dollar amount, estimated cost, duration and the correct account.
- I know how to check a fill, partial fill, rejection or cancellation.
- I confirmed the broker’s current fractional-share policy if I do not intend to buy a whole share.
- I saved the confirmation and will monitor the position in the context of a diversified plan.
What buying AMZN does—and does not—tell you
Completing a purchase gives you exposure to one public company through the security identified as AMZN. It does not guarantee a profit, protect principal, provide diversification or make the position appropriate for your goals. The responsible next step is to monitor the account, keep records and reassess the position against your risk tolerance and broader allocation rather than assuming that ownership alone is a strategy.
