When a new iPhone launch pushes prices beyond your budget, a used or professionally refurbished model can deliver most of the same experience for substantially less. The safe way to buy is not to chase the lowest listing: choose a seller with a written return policy, confirm Activation Lock is removed, verify the carrier and IMEI status, inspect parts and battery information, test every major function, and compare the complete cost with the phone’s remaining software support.
Why used iPhones become more attractive when launch prices rise
Launch pricing can make the previous generations unusually good value, but the discount is not automatic. The Associated Press, citing CCS Insight in 2025, reported that refurbished phones were typically 15% to 50% cheaper than new phones. That is a market-level range, not a promise for a particular model, condition or seller.
The same AP report said iPhones represented about 60% of the global secondhand-phone market, compared with about 17% for Samsung Android phones, according to CCS Insight’s 2025 estimate. Strong demand means a used iPhone can retain value, but it also means listings may sell quickly and that low prices deserve careful scrutiny.

That estimate describes a potential launch-price change, not the price of every model or the discount available on the used market. If a new flagship becomes unaffordable, a phone roughly three generations old is often the practical compromise: it can cost less while retaining a useful period of iOS support.

Choose the seller and terms before choosing the phone
Prefer accountable sellers
Apple advises buying from a reliable seller and learning what the seller’s certification process actually checks. A specialist refurbished marketplace, established retailer or seller with a documented inspection process is generally easier to hold accountable than an anonymous listing that offers no meaningful remedy.
Marketplace protections can matter when a phone arrives locked, blacklisted, damaged or materially different from its description. AP notes that platforms such as eBay and Swappa offer policies for phones that are not as advertised. Policies change, so read the current terms at checkout rather than relying on an old listing or a seller’s summary.
Read the return policy in full
Record the length of the return window, the condition required for a return, who pays shipping, whether a restocking fee applies and what happens if the device fails an inspection. A return policy that covers only an unopened box is of little help when problems appear during setup.
Demand a clear grading definition
“Excellent,” “very good” and similar grades are not standardized. AP describes phone grading as “all over the place,” with no universal scale. Ask for the seller’s exact definition: acceptable screen marks, frame dents, back-glass damage, battery threshold, camera-lens condition and whether parts were replaced. A grade should describe visible wear and function, not substitute for either.
Ask for repair and battery disclosures
Before paying, obtain the model number, storage capacity, color, IMEI or IMEIs, carrier status, battery information and any parts-history details the seller can provide. Keep screenshots of the listing and messages. They become evidence if the delivered phone does not match the description.
Use this pre-payment checklist
- Seller identity, reputation and contact details are clear.
- A written return policy covers a phone that is locked, blacklisted, damaged or not as described.
- The grading scale explains cosmetic wear and functional standards.
- The listing identifies the exact iPhone model, storage size and condition.
- The seller states whether the battery and other parts are original, used, repaired or unknown.
- The total price includes tax, shipping and any inspection or restocking charge.
- Accessories are specified, including whether a charging cable is included.
If a seller refuses to provide basic identity or device information, insists on payment outside the platform’s protection, or pressures you to skip testing, walk away. A small apparent saving is not worth losing your only remedy.

Activation Lock is the non-negotiable check
What to look for
Turn on the phone before money changes hands. If the screen says “iPhone Locked to Owner”, Activation Lock is still enabled. Apple’s instruction is explicit: do not buy an iPhone when Activation Lock is enabled.
How the seller must remove it
- Ask the seller to enter their Apple Account password when prompted.
- Have the seller turn off Activation Lock and erase the iPhone.
- Wait for the phone to return to the setup screen.
- Begin setup far enough to confirm that the device can activate under your account.
Do not accept a promise that the seller will remove the lock later. For an online purchase, return the phone immediately if the “iPhone Locked to Owner” screen appears. A factory reset by itself does not solve an Activation Lock that remains linked to the previous owner.
Verify carrier status and the phone’s identity
Check Network Provider Lock
Open Settings > General > About and find Network Provider Lock. The phrase “No SIM restrictions” indicates that the iPhone is unlocked. A named network provider means the phone is restricted to that provider unless the provider later unlocks it.
Do not confuse a seller’s statement that the phone was paid off with the on-device status. The setting is the direct check you can perform before accepting the device. If you need a particular network, confirm compatibility and activation with that provider before the return period ends.
Record and compare the IMEI
Still in Settings > General > About, record the IMEI. Compare it with the listing, receipt, original packaging if supplied and any carrier or marketplace blacklist check available to you. AP explains that carriers commonly blacklist the IMEI of a phone reported stolen.

Check both when they are displayed and make sure every number matches the documentation. A mismatch can indicate that the listing describes a different device or that a part has been swapped. If a carrier or marketplace check reports a blacklist, stop the transaction and use the seller’s return process; do not rely on a promise that the status will be corrected later.

Inspect Parts and Service History
Find the history
Open Settings > General > About and review Parts and Service History when the section is available. Apple uses labels including Genuine Apple Part, Used, Unknown and Finish Repair. The label tells you what the phone can verify about a replacement, but it does not by itself establish that the repair was performed well.
- Genuine Apple Part: the phone identifies the component as a genuine Apple replacement.
- Used: the component was previously installed in another iPhone.
- Unknown: the phone cannot verify the component. For a battery, Apple says this can mean a nongenuine, unverified, modified or malfunctioning part.
- Finish Repair: the repair process has not been completed in the phone’s records; ask the seller what remains to be done.
Ask the seller to explain every non-genuine, used, unknown or unfinished entry. If the explanation conflicts with the listing, treat that as a condition discrepancy rather than a minor technicality.
Check battery health without treating a percentage as a guarantee
Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health, or Battery Health & Charging on older iOS versions. Review maximum capacity and any service or performance warning. Apple cautions that battery-health information may be inaccurate when the battery cannot be verified and warns that nongenuine batteries can create safety or performance issues.

A seller may set a minimum threshold, but that is the seller’s policy, not an industry standard. Compare the stated threshold with the price, warranty, return window and likely cost of a replacement battery. A lower-capacity battery can still be acceptable when the discount and return protection compensate for it; an undisclosed or unverified battery is a reason to demand clarification or choose another phone.
Complete a hands-on inspection before accepting the phone
Start with physical condition
- Inspect the display under bright light for cracks, deep scratches, bright spots, discoloration or areas that do not respond to touch.
- Check the frame and back for bends, gaps, heavy dents or signs that the phone has been opened.
- Look into the charging connector for debris, bent contacts or corrosion. A dirty port can make an otherwise working phone appear faulty, but damage should be disclosed.
- Confirm that the model, storage capacity and color match the listing and the About screen.
Test charging and controls
Connect a known-good cable and charger. The phone should begin charging reliably; Apple says not to buy a phone that will not charge. Gently move the connector only enough to identify an intermittent connection, not to force a damaged port.
Press the side button and test the volume controls and silent control. Confirm that each produces the expected response and that no button sticks or requires excessive force.

Test cameras and video
Open the camera in bright and low light. Take still photos with the main camera and, where the model has them, the telephoto and ultra-wide cameras. Check focus, exposure, switching between lenses and the saved images. Record video, play it back and listen for abnormal audio or image glitches. A camera that opens but cannot focus, switch lenses or save files is not fully functional.

Test speakers, microphone and playback
Play a video or music clip at several volume levels through the built-in speakers. Listen for distortion, crackling or a missing channel. Open Voice Memos, record your voice, stop, and play the recording back. This checks the microphone and the recording path separately from speaker playback.
Test display, Wi-Fi and basic setup
Raise and lower display brightness and inspect the entire touch surface by moving an icon or typing across the keyboard. Join a trusted Wi-Fi network, load several pages and disconnect and reconnect once. The seller should erase the phone and let you set it up far enough to verify activation, but do not enter sensitive account information until Activation Lock has been cleared and you have decided to keep the device.

Price is only part of the value. AP quotes Simon Bryant, CCS Insight’s vice president of research, describing about three generations old as the “sweet spot.” He also advises avoiding phones more than five or six generations old because operating-system support may be ending.
Use the exact model and release age to estimate its remaining iOS support runway. A very old iPhone may be inexpensive yet costly in practice if it cannot receive current security updates, run required apps or use newer accessories. Conversely, paying a little more for a newer generation can spread the purchase cost over more years and reduce the chance that you will need to replace it soon.

Do not infer support solely from the phone’s cosmetic grade or battery percentage. Record the model, current iOS version and the seller’s warranty period, then decide whether the remaining support period matches how long you expect to keep the device.

Compare the complete cost, not just the listing price
When two offers are close, evaluate them on the same criteria. Use “not stated” rather than assuming a missing detail is favorable.

AP notes that cables or earphones may not be included. Budget for a replacement iPhone charging cable when necessary and verify whether the phone uses Lightning or USB-C before ordering. Include that accessory cost in the comparison rather than treating it as free.
Red flags that should end the transaction
- The phone displays “iPhone Locked to Owner,” or the seller will not remove Activation Lock in front of you.
- The IMEI does not match the listing or appears on a carrier or marketplace blacklist.
- Network Provider Lock names a carrier you cannot use and the seller offers no documented unlock.
- The seller will not show Parts and Service History or explain an Unknown or Finish Repair label.
- Battery-health information is unavailable, unverified or materially different from the listing.
- The charging port, camera, microphone, speaker, display, buttons, Wi-Fi or video test fails.
- The seller’s grade has no written definition, or the return policy excludes the faults you need to test.
- The seller pressures you to pay outside the protected checkout process or to skip setup.
For an online purchase, document the unboxing and run the checks during the return window. If a check fails, preserve the listing, photographs, screenshots and messages, then use the platform or seller’s stated return procedure instead of attempting an undocumented repair.
Secure the iPhone after you decide to keep it
Once Activation Lock is cleared and the phone passes your inspection, update iOS before moving sensitive data onto it. Enable an automatic screen lock, set up backups and configure authenticator apps. Sign in only to the account you intend to use on the device.
The FTC recommends backing up data, removing the SIM and any SD card where applicable, unlinking accounts and restoring factory settings when changing phones. If you are replacing an older device, complete those steps on the old phone before handing it to a buyer. On the used iPhone, verify that the previous owner’s account is gone before adding yours.
A practical decision rule
Buy when the phone activates under your account, has acceptable carrier and IMEI status, passes the functional inspection, and the seller’s warranty and return terms cover the remaining uncertainty. Prefer the newer or better-supported model when the price difference is modest. Prefer the cheaper model only when its battery, parts history, condition and support runway are clearly disclosed and the savings still outweigh the cost of a cable, battery service or earlier replacement.
The safest bargain is therefore not the lowest launch-era discount. It is the offer whose identity, lock status, repair history, battery condition, working features, support age and return rights you can verify before the money becomes difficult to recover.
