You can play Grand Theft Auto VI on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar lists November 19, 2026 as the release date and describes the game as “Plays Best On PS5,” but it has not published a quantified performance comparison that shows one console or PS5 model is faster or looks better. If you already own a confirmed console, the available evidence does not support upgrading just for GTA VI.
Which consoles can play GTA 6?
Rockstar confirms Grand Theft Auto VI for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S families, with a stated release date of November 19, 2026. See Rockstar’s official game page for its platform announcement and current messaging.
Rockstar’s wording, “Plays Best On PS5,” is platform positioning, not a published benchmark. The reviewed official information does not establish a performance ranking between PS5 and Xbox, or among PS5 models. It also does not give model-specific minimum requirements that make a PS5 Pro or Xbox Series X necessary. Choose based on your actual costs and preferences rather than assuming a higher-priced model is required.
How to compare the real cost
Compare the checkout total for an eligible console in your country, not a model name or an old headline price. Include the game and any accessories you need; add a subscription only if you plan to use it. Local prices, stock, taxes, and retailer offers can change.
#1 Best Overall
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
- PS5 Digital Edition: Sony’s U.S. recommended retail price was $599.99, effective April 2, 2026. This is a dated manufacturer reference, not a worldwide price or a promise of what a retailer currently charges. Check Sony’s U.S. PS5 buying page and local retailer checkout for current availability and totals.
- Other PS5 options: Sony lists PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, and PS5 Pro, as well as accessories including extra storage and a removable disc drive. Availability and pricing depend on your market; check the local listings rather than assuming every model or accessory is in stock.
- Xbox Series X|S: Both are within the confirmed Xbox Series X|S family. No current official Xbox price was established here, so compare live local listings rather than relying on an unsupported price ranking.
Do not infer from the official platform announcement that an upgrade or a particular model is required. If you own a confirmed platform already, a new console is an added cost that the available evidence does not justify solely for GTA VI.
Choose the ecosystem that costs you less overall
The console price is only one part of the decision. Check whether your existing games and the people you play with are on PlayStation or Xbox, and whether switching would mean replacing games or accessories you value. Compare eligible consoles at local checkout, then factor in the game and only the extras you actually intend to buy. Sony’s pages list PS5 models and accessories, but do not establish a GTA VI-specific need for extra storage.

Digital-only hardware is a sensible choice if you are comfortable buying games digitally and do not need physical discs for other games or media. If discs matter for your wider collection or use, compare a console with a disc drive and any separately available drive costs. Sony lists a removable PS5 disc drive as an accessory; check local compatibility, availability, and price before buying.
Do you need a disc drive for GTA 6?
Not for the boxed physical version Rockstar describes. Rockstar says the box contains a download code rather than a game disc, so a disc drive is not required to redeem and download that GTA VI package. A drive may still be useful for other physical games or media. Check the official GTA VI page for the physical-package details.

Where to buy, and how to avoid code problems
Rockstar’s June 26, 2026 preorder details list PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Rockstar Store, and select retailers as purchase channels. Availability and terms can vary by region and seller; verify the edition, price, bonuses, and code restrictions at checkout. For a digital code, Rockstar advises buying from a retailer in the same country as the platform account to avoid potential activation problems. See Rockstar’s purchase information and region guidance.
Rockstar’s August 18, 2026 editions information describes Standard and Ultimate editions and says digital preorders or purchases before November 20, 2026 include listed preorder bonuses and one month of GTA+. These are time-sensitive offer terms that may differ by region or platform. Check the current terms before purchase, and do not treat a bonus as a reason to buy a more expensive console.

A practical buying checklist
- Confirm that the console is PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, the families Rockstar lists for GTA VI.
- Compare current local checkout totals for the eligible models you are considering, including tax and only the accessories or subscriptions you intend to use.
- Check where your existing games and friends are, and whether you want a disc drive for uses beyond GTA VI.
- Choose digital-only hardware only if it suits your other purchases and media use; Rockstar’s boxed GTA VI version is a download code, not a disc.
- For a digital code, use a seller in the same country as your platform account and review the edition and offer terms before paying.
- Skip an upgrade made solely on claims that a more expensive model is required or performs better for GTA VI; Rockstar’s cited information does not establish that.
