Feeling lonely does not mean you have failed at friendship. Start with one manageable, repeatable connection: message someone who cares about you, invite a person to join an activity already in your week, or attend a welcoming group linked to an interest. Repeating low-pressure contact gives relationships room to grow, while asking for and offering support improves their quality.

Loneliness can persist even when you know many people, and practical barriers can make connection genuinely difficult. The steps below are options, not a guaranteed treatment. Choose what fits your energy, access, safety, culture and preferences, and seek professional or community support if disconnection remains intense or is tied to a major life or health challenge.

What is the difference between loneliness and social isolation?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes social connection in terms of the number and variety of relationships you want, the roles those relationships play, the support they provide, and whether their qualities are positive or negative. Being socially connected includes a sense of belonging and support, not merely a full contact list.

Loneliness is a subjective feeling: you feel alone, disconnected, or without the meaningful closeness or belonging you want. It is a gap between your actual and desired connection. You can have a partner, coworkers, friends or online contacts and still feel lonely.

Social isolation is a condition involving little or no relationship contact or support. Someone can be socially isolated without describing themselves as lonely, while another person can feel lonely despite frequent contact. The two experiences can overlap, but they call for different questions: “What kind of closeness am I missing?” and “What practical opportunities or support are absent?”

In CDC reporting published in 2024, about one in three U.S. adults reported feeling lonely and about one in four reported lacking social and emotional support. The underlying report covered 39 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, so these figures are not a complete count of every U.S. adult and the page’s publication year is not necessarily the survey year.

Persistent isolation and loneliness are associated with higher risks of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, anxiety, suicidality, self-harm, dementia and earlier death. These are population-level associations, not predictions that any individual will develop one of these conditions. They are a reason to take ongoing disconnection seriously rather than a reason to blame yourself.

How do I make friends when I feel lonely?

Begin with a small action that can happen again. A single intense social effort can be exhausting; a modest invitation or check-in that you can repeat is more useful for building familiarity.

1. Contact someone who is likely to respond with care

Choose a relative, former coworker, neighbor, classmate or friend who has shown interest in you before. Be specific and easy to answer: “I have been feeling disconnected. Could we talk for 15 minutes this week?” or “Would you like to walk together on Saturday?” If one person is unavailable, try another rather than interpreting silence as a judgment about your worth.

You do not need to disclose everything immediately. You can name the level of support you want: listening, practical help, company, or advice. If a conversation feels safe and helpful, suggest a next contact before it ends.

2. Make contact part of a routine

Attach a check-in to something that already happens, such as a Sunday call, a message after a regular class, or coffee after a weekly errand. A recurring reminder reduces the need to summon motivation each time. Contact more than one person when possible so that all emotional support does not rest on one relationship.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Use a shared interest as the introduction

Look for a volunteer shift, community garden, recreation session, book or craft group, faith or cultural gathering, neighborhood project, or other local activity that you would value even if no friendship formed. Shared tasks give you an immediate topic and make repeated contact natural. Ask when the group meets, whether newcomers are welcomed, and what accessibility or cost arrangements exist.

4. Share an activity already in your week

The CDC suggests doing existing activities, such as exercising or cooking, with other people. Invite someone to join a walk you already take, prepare a meal together, or work side by side on a familiar task. This can feel less demanding than inventing a completely new social routine.

How can I build stronger social connections?

Making contact is the beginning. Relationship strength usually develops through reciprocal support, reliable responsiveness and attention to how an interaction feels over time.

Ask for support clearly

People cannot reliably guess what you need. Try a concrete request: “Could you check in with me twice this week?” “Can you sit with me while I make this appointment?” or “I only need you to listen for a few minutes.” A clear request gives the other person a realistic way to help and lets you notice whether they respond respectfully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Offer support without overextending yourself

Reciprocity does not require equal help in every conversation. Offer what you can genuinely provide: a ride, a meal, information, encouragement or a listening ear. State limits when necessary, such as “I can talk for ten minutes, but I cannot handle this task today.” Sustainable support protects both people from resentment and burnout.

Show responsiveness and gratitude

Reply when you can, acknowledge an effort, and follow up on something the person told you. A short message such as “I appreciated your call yesterday” communicates that the relationship matters. If you cannot respond promptly, a brief explanation can prevent unnecessary uncertainty.

Attend to relationship quality

More contacts are not automatically better. Notice whether a relationship is supportive, respectful and meaningful, or whether it repeatedly leaves you anxious, dismissed or unsafe. Address manageable tension directly: describe the specific behavior, explain its effect, and ask for a change. If conflict involves threats, coercion, abuse or discrimination, prioritize safety and seek specialized help rather than trying to repair the relationship alone.

Let closeness develop at a realistic pace

Repeated contact may create familiarity before it creates trust. Share personal information gradually, respect the other person’s boundaries, and allow the relationship to include ordinary, low-stakes moments. A new acquaintance does not need to become a best friend to reduce isolation or add value to your life.

Which connection option should I try?

No CDC source ranks these approaches as best for everyone, and evidence does not establish one ideal frequency or timeline. Compare an option against your interests, comfort, access, opportunity for repeated contact, safety and preferred format.

Option What it can provide Questions to ask before committing
One-to-one outreach Personal attention and a chance to discuss what support you want Who is likely to respond kindly? Can we schedule a repeat check-in?
Shared-interest group A built-in topic, repeated contact and a possible sense of belonging Is it welcoming to newcomers? Is the time, location and cost workable?
Volunteering, a community garden or recreation Purposeful activity alongside other people, often with defined tasks Are duties physically accessible? Is transportation available?
Doing an existing activity with someone Lower planning burden because the activity is already in your routine Can we choose a pace and setting that suit both of us?
Peer-support group or phone companionship Conversation with people who share an experience, sometimes through scheduled calls How are privacy, moderation, crisis concerns and accessibility handled?
Virtual program or online community Connection when distance, health or transportation limits in-person attendance Can I participate safely and consistently? Is the group respectful and moderated?
Social-skills or conflict-resolution training Practice with communication, boundaries or repairing disagreements Is the facilitator qualified, and does the format feel supportive rather than shaming?
Intergenerational program Contact across age groups and opportunities for mutual learning or support Does the program match my schedule, language and comfort level?

The CDC’s overview of promising approaches includes peer groups, weekly phone companionship, virtual programming, social-skills and conflict-resolution training, intergenerational programs, and changes to the built environment that support gathering and mobility. These are examples to consider, not a proven ranking. The CDC also notes that more research is needed on prevention, measurement and interventions.

What can I do when I feel disconnected from people?

First identify what is blocking connection. The solution for “I have no transportation” is different from the solution for “I am afraid of rejection” or “every available group feels culturally unsafe.” Naming the barrier prevents you from treating a structural problem as a personal flaw.

When transportation or mobility is limited

Ask a community organization, library, health service or local government about accessible transportation, programs near your home, home-visiting services or phone-based companionship. Consider a virtual group only if its technology and privacy requirements are manageable. If pain, fatigue or disability changes from day to day, choose activities with flexible attendance and a way to leave early.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When money is tight

Look for free community events, public libraries, parks, volunteer roles, mutual-aid groups and programs with sliding-scale or no-cost participation. You can invite someone to a walk, shared meal made from what you already have, or free public activity rather than assuming connection requires spending.

When health, disability or mental health affects participation

Tell a provider or organizer what accommodation would help: seating, captions, breaks, a quiet space, shorter sessions, a support person or remote attendance. Chronic conditions and mental health challenges can reduce energy and opportunity; adjusting the activity is a practical response, not a failure of effort.

When language, culture or discrimination is a concern

Search for groups where your language, identity or cultural background is understood and respected. Ask how the organization handles harassment, confidentiality and accessibility. You are allowed to leave a setting that repeatedly marginalizes you and look for a safer one.

When you live rurally or alone

Combine occasional in-person contact with scheduled calls, online groups or local services that coordinate rides and gatherings. A longer-distance relationship can still be meaningful when both people agree on a reliable way to stay in touch.

How can I make connection attempts safer and more sustainable?

  • Set a small goal. Decide whether success means sending one message, attending for 20 minutes, or learning one person’s name. This keeps a first attempt from becoming a test of your social value.
  • Plan an exit. Use your own transportation when possible, tell someone where you will be, and decide how long you can stay. Leave if you feel unsafe or pressured.
  • Protect privacy. Share personal details gradually, use reputable organizations, and check how online groups moderate posts and handle personal information.
  • Watch your energy. Schedule recovery time after demanding interactions. A sustainable pattern is more useful than alternating between overcommitment and withdrawal.
  • Review the fit. After an activity, ask: Did I feel respected? Was participation accessible? Did I want to return? Change the setting or format when the answer is consistently no.
  • Keep more than one pathway open. A friend, a group and a professional or community service can serve different needs. Diversifying support reduces pressure on any single relationship.

When should I seek professional or community support?

Contact a health professional or suitable community support when loneliness or disconnection is persistent, highly stressful, interferes with sleep or daily functioning, or appears alongside depression, anxiety, substance use, a chronic health condition, divorce, bereavement or another major challenge. The CDC specifically advises seeking help around health issues, divorce and bereavement, as well as when you feel disconnected, lonely or stressed.

You can start with a primary-care clinician, mental-health professional, social worker, bereavement counselor, peer-support service or community organization. A simple description is enough: “I have felt disconnected for several months, it is affecting my daily life, and I need help finding support.” Ask about group programs, transportation assistance, accessible activities, counseling and referrals that match your circumstances.

If you may hurt yourself, cannot stay safe, or are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services or an urgent crisis service now and ask a trusted person to stay with you. Loneliness can coexist with serious distress, and urgent safety needs take priority over building a social plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What can communities do to make connection easier?

Individual effort is only part of the picture. The CDC identifies transportation, parks, accessible public spaces and community-based organizations as conditions that can expand opportunities to connect. Safe places to gather, affordable programs, reliable transit, language access and disability accommodations reduce the amount of effort an individual must supply.

The U.S. Surgeon General’s 2023 advisory, Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation: The U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory on the Healing Effects of Social Connection and Community, frames connection as shaped by cultural, community and societal conditions and calls for a whole-of-society response. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services maintains a social-connection framework and fact-card resources, and the World Health Organization’s Commission on Social Connection reported in 2025 on the need for scalable action globally. These perspectives reinforce that loneliness is not simply an individual character problem.

A flexible starter plan you can adapt

There is no official CDC schedule for building relationships. Use this sequence as a menu, not a prescription, and adjust it to your health, responsibilities and safety.

  1. Name the gap. Write one sentence describing what you want more of: a listener, practical help, regular companionship, a shared activity or a sense of belonging.
  2. Choose one reachable person and one reachable setting. Send a specific invitation to the person, and identify a group or program that fits your interests and access needs.
  3. Repeat the lowest-effort action. Schedule a second check-in, return to the same group, or continue the shared activity. Familiarity matters more than a dramatic first meeting.
  4. Add reciprocity. Ask for a manageable form of support, offer something you can provide, and acknowledge the other person’s effort.
  5. Evaluate without self-blame. If the setting is inaccessible, unsafe or consistently draining, change the format or seek help identifying another option. A poor fit is information, not proof that you cannot connect.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states: “Even though no official guidelines exist, below are some suggestions for what you can do to improve social connections.” Treat that guidance honestly: try small actions, notice what helps, and involve professionals or community services when loneliness remains difficult to carry alone.
