The most reliable way to build social connection as you age is to make it a small, recurring part of activities you already value: schedule a call or visit, join an interest-based activity, add companionship to movement, and use local or remote options when travel is difficult. There is no medically validated quota for socializing. Your routine should make contact easier without turning relationships into another obligation.

Start with one connection you can repeat, then adjust the format for hearing, vision, mobility, memory, transportation, cost, and technology needs. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) describes daily, weekly, or biweekly contact as possible patterns, not rules.

Loneliness and social isolation are not the same thing

Loneliness is the distressing feeling of being alone or separated. Social isolation means having few social contacts and limited regular interaction. They can occur together, but they do not always do so. Someone may live alone and feel content, while another person may feel lonely in a crowded home or group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters when you design a routine. A calendar full of appointments will not necessarily relieve loneliness if the interactions feel superficial or mismatched. Conversely, a person who prefers solitude may not need more scheduled events. The useful question is not “How much socializing should an older adult do?” but “What kind of contact feels meaningful and is realistic to repeat?”

In a 2019 article, NIA reported that 28% of older adults in the United States—13.8 million people—lived alone, citing Administration on Aging data. That figure describes 2019, not the current year, and living alone does not by itself indicate loneliness or isolation.

Why connection can become harder with age

Changes in health and circumstances can shrink opportunities to meet people. NIA identifies hearing or vision loss, memory loss, disability, mobility challenges, and the loss of family or friends as factors that can interfere with regular contact. A routine works better when it treats those changes as design constraints rather than personal failures.

  • Hearing or vision changes: A noisy restaurant, a fast group discussion, or a small video window may be exhausting. Better lighting, captions, a quieter room, or a one-to-one conversation can make the same relationship more accessible.
  • Mobility or transportation limits: A nearby neighbor, home visit, phone call, or online group may be more dependable than an activity that requires several transfers.
  • Memory or energy changes: A recurring reminder, a familiar location, and a shorter meeting can reduce the effort needed to participate.
  • Bereavement or a shrinking network: Replacing one lost relationship is not the goal. Several lower-pressure contacts—a class, a volunteer shift, and a scheduled call—can create different paths to connection.

These adaptations do not imply that a person is lonely. They simply make participation possible when the old way of meeting no longer works.

Build the routine one repeatable contact at a time

1. Choose an anchor you can keep

Pick one contact that is specific enough to appear on a calendar: a Sunday phone call, a Wednesday visit with a neighbor, a weekly shared meal, or a video chat after a regular appointment. Ask the other person whether the time works and agree on the simplest way to reschedule.

NIA’s staying-connected guidance gives daily, weekly, and biweekly contact as examples. The right cadence depends on your relationships, energy, and preferences. A less frequent contact that actually happens is more useful than a daily plan that creates stress.

  1. Write down one person or group you want to contact.
  2. Select a day, time, and format that both sides can manage.
  3. Put a recurring reminder on a paper calendar, phone, or other device.
  4. After two or three meetings, ask whether the timing, length, and setting feel comfortable.

2. Give the meeting a reason to happen

Activities with a built-in purpose can make invitations easier. NIA lists classes, hobbies, volunteering, and other community activities as possibilities. Instead of asking someone to “socialize,” invite them to do something concrete: attend a class, work on a hobby, help at a community event, or share a meal.

Choose an interest that is genuinely yours. A group selected only because it is advertised as social may feel like work. If the first activity is awkward, too demanding, or inaccessible, try a different format; the available guidance does not establish one universally best activity.

3. Combine movement with contact when it suits you

Exercise can provide a regular reason to see someone. NIA suggests exercising with others, such as joining a walking club or walking with a friend. The same principle can apply to another activity you already enjoy, provided the pace and setting are safe for you.

NIA’s staying-connected page also states that adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week. This is an overall physical-activity target, not a required amount of socializing and not a prescribed “social connection dose.” If you are changing your activity because of a health condition, ask a clinician what is appropriate.

4. Use remote contact as a complete format, not a consolation prize

Video chat and other communication technologies can help when distance, weather, transportation, or fatigue makes travel difficult. A tablet is one possible device, but no particular device is required. A phone call, voice message, text exchange, or online group may fit better.

For a dependable video routine, agree in advance on the app, time, and who starts the call. Keep a printed or written set of steps near the device. Public libraries and community centers may offer technology classes; ask what instruction is available locally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Add a local option

NIA points readers toward social-service agencies, senior and community centers, public libraries, Area Agencies on Aging, and the Eldercare Locator. These organizations can help you discover classes, groups, volunteer opportunities, and other activities in your area.

Programs change, and availability differs by location. Before relying on an option, contact the provider to confirm:

  • Current schedule and enrollment process
  • Eligibility and any cost
  • Transportation or parking arrangements
  • Building access, seating, restrooms, and other accessibility details
  • Hearing, vision, language, or technology support
  • What happens if you miss a session

Compare connection options by fit, not by a ranking

The sources do not compare these formats head to head. Use the following questions to select an option that matches your circumstances.

Option May fit when you want Check before committing
Scheduled phone call Predictable one-to-one contact without travel or video Hearing clarity, call length, time-zone or schedule conflicts
Video call Conversation with visual cues when distance makes visits difficult Reliable internet, device comfort, captions, lighting, and help with setup
Class or hobby group A shared interest and repeated contact with the same people Noise, pace, physical access, fees, registration, and whether beginners are welcome
Volunteering A purposeful role and contact organized around helping Shift length, physical demands, transportation, training, and supervision
Walking or exercise with others Movement plus a regular social appointment Surface, pace, weather plan, rest access, and advice from a clinician if needed
Community program Several activities or services in one local place Current calendar, eligibility, cost, accessibility, and transport

Use more than one format if that reduces pressure. For example, a weekly call can continue during a month when transportation is unreliable, while an in-person activity supplies a different kind of contact when you are able to attend.

An illustrative weekly pattern

This is a planning example, not a recommended schedule. Change the frequency, duration, and activities to fit your preferences.

Day Connection prompt Adaptation if the original plan fails
Monday Send a message or make a short call to one person Leave a voice message and arrange a definite call time
Tuesday Attend or investigate an interest-based class Ask the library or community center about a remote or quieter option
Wednesday Walk or exercise with a friend or group, if appropriate Use a phone call while each person moves safely in their own setting, or choose a seated activity
Thursday Unscheduled day for rest or a spontaneous visit Keep the day open; a connection routine should not remove recovery time
Friday Volunteer or participate in a community activity Ask about shorter shifts, seated duties, or another role
Weekend Shared meal, neighbor visit, or video call Use a phone call or reschedule rather than treating a missed visit as failure

The purpose of this example is to show how contact can be distributed across ordinary activities. It is not a target to reach, and it should not be used to judge whether someone is “social enough.”

Design for sensory, mobility, and memory needs

Make conversation easier to hear and see

  • Choose a quiet room and seat people where faces are visible.
  • Ask participants to speak one at a time and repeat or rephrase when needed.
  • Use available captions or written instructions during online meetings.
  • Improve lighting without placing a bright window behind the speaker.
  • For a group that remains difficult to follow, switch to a smaller or one-to-one format.

Reduce travel and physical effort

  • Start with a nearby location or a home-based call.
  • Ask the provider about entrances, seating, restrooms, and the route from transportation.
  • Choose a shorter session or a role that allows sitting and breaks.
  • Keep a remote alternative for weather, illness, or transportation disruptions.

Support memory and energy

  • Use one recurring calendar entry rather than relying on memory.
  • Keep the same meeting place or call routine when possible.
  • Confirm the appointment shortly beforehand if that helps.
  • Plan recovery time after a demanding outing.

Troubleshoot common reasons a routine breaks down

“I keep cancelling.”

Identify the exact barrier: time, travel, fatigue, cost, anxiety, or an activity that is not meaningful. Shorten the meeting, move it closer, or switch to a call. Keep the relationship and change the logistics.

“Groups feel overwhelming.”

Try a one-to-one conversation, a smaller class, or arriving early when fewer people are present. Ask whether a facilitator can explain the format in advance. A group is optional; it is not a test of sociability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I do not know what to say.”

Use the shared activity as the conversation prompt. Discuss the class, a meal, a book, a walk, or the practical task you are doing together. A useful connection does not require constant disclosure.

“The technology is the problem.”

Ask a library or community center about technology instruction. Write down the few steps you need: turn on the device, open the meeting, and answer the call. If video remains frustrating, use audio or a regular telephone.

“I tried once and did not connect.”

One unsuccessful meeting does not establish that the activity is wrong. Test a different time, group size, setting, or interest. Also notice whether the format creates the kind of contact you actually want—conversation, companionship, teamwork, or a sense of purpose.

What the health evidence does—and does not—say

NIA describes loneliness and social isolation as associated with risks that include heart disease, depression, and cognitive decline. “Associated with” does not mean that a particular class, call, walk, or volunteer shift prevents one of those conditions. These activities are practical ways to create contact and purpose; they are not a diagnosis or a substitute for medical care.

In its 2019 article, NIA quoted Lisbeth Nielsen, Ph.D., of the Division of Behavioral and Social Research: “NIA is interested in exploring potential interventions to address social isolation and loneliness, which are both risk factors for poor aging outcomes.” The quotation belongs to that 2019 article and describes the agency’s research interest at that time.

If loneliness, grief, depression, anxiety, or withdrawal is persistent or is interfering with daily life, discuss it with a qualified health professional. A social routine can complement care, but it should not be used to explain away symptoms that need evaluation.

Find current opportunities safely and realistically

Begin with one of the local routes NIA names: a social-service agency, senior center, community center, public library, Area Agency on Aging, or the Eldercare Locator. Explain the type of contact you want and any hearing, vision, mobility, memory, language, transportation, or cost constraints.

Ask the provider for current details rather than relying on an old flyer or an assumption about what a center offers. Confirm the schedule, eligibility, fees, transportation, accessibility, registration, and cancellation policy before making it a recurring commitment. If the first referral is not suitable, request another format or location.

A 30-day way to start without overcommitting

  1. Days 1–3: Choose one person or group and one realistic recurring contact. Put it on your calendar.
  2. Days 4–7: Make the first call, visit, or video chat. Note only practical barriers, such as noise, travel, or timing.
  3. Week 2: Add one meaningful activity—a hobby, class, volunteer role, shared meal, or walk with another person.
  4. Week 3: Contact a local library, community center, aging agency, or other service named by NIA to learn what is currently available.
  5. Week 4: Keep the anchor that happened reliably, adjust the activity for accessibility, and remove any commitment that consistently creates stress.

As NIA puts it, “Everyone needs social connections to survive and thrive.” Building those connections into ordinary routines—at a pace and in a format that fit the individual—is more sustainable than pursuing a universal social schedule.
