OpenClaw automations are built by describing a trigger and the outcome you want in plain language, connecting the required service, and reviewing the result the agent returns. The practical sequence is trigger → task description → tool connection → review and approval. OpenClaw is conversational rather than a purely visual flowchart editor, so you can begin without writing application code, but some advanced options still require configuration files and careful permission settings.

What “no-code automation” means in OpenClaw

OpenClaw is presented in the available documentation snippets as an open-source personal AI agent that can be reached through chat applications using a Gateway. You explain an outcome, and the agent determines the operational steps instead of requiring you to draw every node in a flowchart. This is different from a visual workflow builder, where you normally place trigger, action, filter, and output blocks on a canvas and configure each connection separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The conversational model does not remove the need for design. You still have to specify when a workflow should start, what information it may read, what it is allowed to change, and what should happen when a service is unavailable. A reliable OpenClaw request contains four parts:

  1. Trigger: a schedule, incoming message, webhook, or event from a connected service.
  2. Task: the analysis, drafting, lookup, transformation, or other work you want performed.
  3. Tool connection: the account, file, API, or channel the agent must use.
  4. Reviewable result: a draft, report, proposed change, or completed action that you can inspect, with approval gates for risky operations.

That pattern is the safest way to start. Treat the agent’s first output as a proposed result, not as proof that every external action succeeded. Ask it to show what it read, what it changed, and which steps it could not complete.

What you need before creating a workflow

OpenClaw is not a hosted switch you can turn on for a few minutes. The setup described by current guides assumes an always-available environment and several independent credentials.

  • A 24/7 host: the Gateway must be running when a schedule or webhook arrives. This can be a server or another continuously powered environment that you administer.
  • AI model access: provide an API key or other supported authentication for the model OpenClaw will use. Keep the key outside prompts and do not paste it into chat messages.
  • A message channel: a chat application is the control surface for sending requests and receiving results. Telegram is suggested as a first channel because the setup requires a bot token and does not require a separate plugin installation. The official channel list also includes Discord, Feishu, iMessage, Matrix, Microsoft Teams, Signal, Slack, WhatsApp, and Zalo.
  • Connected tools: add only the services needed by the workflow, such as a CRM file, a source-control account, a payment-event endpoint, or a location where drafts can be saved.
  • Approval rules: decide in advance which operations are read-only, which create drafts, and which need your explicit confirmation before execution.
  • A supported runtime: one third-party installation guide recommends Node.js 24, or Node.js 22.19 or newer. That requirement has not been confirmed against the full official documentation, so check the current prerequisites at docs.openclaw.ai before installing.

Use separate credentials for testing where possible. A token that can read a document but cannot delete it is easier to contain than an account with unrestricted write access.

Set up the Gateway and your first chat channel

The exact installer and labels can change, and official pages were available only as snippets in the current material. Use the official OpenClaw documentation as the authority for the release you install. The following sequence describes the configuration decisions rather than promising that every command is unchanged.

1. Prepare the host

Choose a machine that remains online and can reach the services you plan to connect. Create a dedicated operating-system account or container where practical, apply updates, and restrict inbound network access. Record the time zone you want schedules to use; a “Monday morning” workflow is ambiguous if the host and your team are in different regions.

2. Install OpenClaw and authenticate the model

Install the release and runtime listed in the official documentation. A third-party guide names openclaw onboard --install-daemon as an onboarding command that configures model authentication, workspace creation, Gateway settings, and optional channels. Because that command and its flags have not been verified against the full official pages, confirm them before running it and treat any error message as version-specific rather than improvising flags.

3. Connect Telegram first

Create a Telegram bot token using Telegram’s bot-management flow, then add that token through the channel configuration described by your OpenClaw version. Telegram is a useful first channel because it gives you a private place to test prompts and receive logs without adding a plugin. Restrict who can message the bot, and do not place it in a public group until access controls and approval behavior are proven.

4. Confirm that the Gateway is reachable

Send a harmless test message such as “reply with the current workspace name and no other action.” Verify that the response arrives in Telegram, that the model can be reached, and that the Gateway records a run. If the test attempts to call a tool, disconnect the tool and repeat the test until the basic message path works.

Design a workflow before you write the prompt

Write the workflow as a small specification first. This prevents a conversational request from silently expanding into an unsafe agent task.

Design question What to decide Example of a safe first choice
When does it start? Schedule, message, webhook, or service event Every Monday at 09:00 in the team’s stated time zone
What may it read? Specific files, records, messages, or event fields One exported CRM file, not the entire account
What should it produce? Summary, draft, classification, proposed change, or completed action A report saved as a new draft file
What may it change? None, draft-only, or named write operations No outbound messages and no record edits
What requires approval? Publishing, deleting, paying, sending, or changing permissions Every external write requires a confirmation message
What happens on failure? Retry, stop, notify, or create an exception report Stop, preserve the input, and notify the owner

Only after these choices are clear should you describe the workflow to OpenClaw. A useful prompt states the trigger, inputs, output location, limits, approval condition, and failure behavior in one place.

Trigger: run every Monday at 09:00 in Europe/London.
Read: the connected weekly CRM export named sales.csv.
Task: calculate changes in opportunities, identify overdue follow-ups, and draft a concise sales summary.
Write: save a new draft named weekly-sales-summary.md; do not edit sales.csv.
Approval: do not send messages or update CRM records without my explicit confirmation.
Failure: report the failing step and preserve all source files unchanged.

Replace the example schedule, file, and time zone with your own values. Keep variable syntax inside a code block or configuration field when your installation requires it.

Build your first read-and-draft automation

Read-and-draft workflows are the best starting point because they exercise scheduling, tool access, model reasoning, and result delivery without immediately granting production write permissions. Build one in this order:

  1. Connect one input: attach a test file, sandbox account, or limited API scope. Avoid connecting an entire production workspace for the first run.
  2. Set a narrow trigger: use a manual message or an infrequent schedule while testing. Confirm the host’s time zone and daylight-saving behavior.
  3. Describe the output: specify the format, destination, maximum length, and the evidence the agent should include for each conclusion.
  4. Declare prohibitions: explicitly forbid sending, publishing, deleting, charging, or editing records during the trial.
  5. Run with representative data: include an empty case, a normal case, and a malformed or incomplete case so you can see how the agent handles uncertainty.
  6. Inspect the run: compare the output with the source, check the tool calls, and verify that no unapproved write occurred.
  7. Promote gradually: only after several successful runs should you add a narrowly scoped write action, and keep an approval gate around it.

Starter workflow: scheduled landing-page draft

A scheduled landing-page draft is a low-risk demonstration because it does not need customer data, payment access, or production publishing permissions. Give OpenClaw a schedule, a short brief, and a save location.

Define the brief

Specify the audience, offer, required sections, tone, claims that must be supported, and the file format. Ask for a draft rather than a live page. If facts are missing, require the agent to mark them for review instead of inventing prices, guarantees, or testimonials.

Set the trigger and destination

Choose a time that leaves room for review. Save each run as a new file with the date in its name so earlier drafts remain available. Give the connected storage account permission to create files in that folder only.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review before publication

Check every factual claim, link, accessibility detail, and brand requirement yourself. A successful file write confirms only that the draft was saved; it does not establish that the copy is accurate or ready for publication.

Starter workflow: weekly CRM review

The first version should analyze and draft only. Schedule OpenClaw to inspect the CRM export each Monday morning and return a weekly sales summary.

Limit the data scope

Provide a read-only export or a narrowly scoped API view. Define which fields may be included in the summary and instruct the agent to omit personal or sensitive fields that are not needed for the analysis.

Define useful calculations

Ask for changes in opportunity stages, aging items, missing follow-ups, and notable movement since the previous report. Require the source record identifier beside each recommendation so a person can verify it quickly.

Keep recommendations separate from actions

Have the agent produce a section of proposed follow-ups, but forbid it from changing CRM records or contacting customers. If the draft is useful over several cycles, add one approved write operation at a time and retain a confirmation step.

Other practical event-driven workflows

Review pull requests from a webhook

A source-control webhook can trigger a review when a pull request changes. Start by asking OpenClaw to summarize the diff, identify likely risks, and post a draft review for a human. Grant read access to the repository and do not allow automatic merging. Test duplicate webhook deliveries so the same change does not generate multiple reviews.

Respond to a payment event

A payment event can initiate a notification or reconciliation draft. Begin with a sandbox event and read-only access. Require the agent to include the event identifier, amount, currency, and timestamp it received, then stop for approval before issuing refunds, changing subscriptions, or sending customer-facing messages. Payment workflows deserve stricter approvals because an incorrect interpretation can create financial or compliance consequences.

Choose an extension path when plain-language prompts are not enough

OpenClaw can be extended in several ways. Choose the least complex option that gives you the control your workflow needs.

Option Best fit What to expect Trade-off
ClawFlows Common tasks you want to install quickly Select a prebuilt recipe, install it, and run it; no YAML authoring is required Less freedom than designing every step yourself; inspect permissions before installation
Lobster Shell Deterministic pipelines with explicit approvals A native pipeline engine using typed YAML workflows and approval gates; its initial release was in February 2026 It is not purely no-code, and documentation is described as thin
n8n paired with OpenClaw Workflows that mix reasoning with fixed integrations OpenClaw handles interpretation while n8n performs deterministic steps You operate two systems and must define the hand-off clearly
Composio Many external services with one authentication layer One skill installation is described as providing access to more than 860 services A broad connector surface increases the importance of scope and credential review
Skills A repeatable procedure specific to your team A folder containing a SKILL.md teaches the agent the procedure; skills are found and installed through the public registry at clawhub.ai Third-party skill instructions and permissions still need inspection and testing

ClawFlows is the closest match for a recipe-driven experience. Lobster Shell is useful when approvals and typed inputs matter more than avoiding configuration. Pairing with n8n makes sense when the reasoning is flexible but the downstream sequence must be exact. A skill is appropriate when the process is primarily instructions and conventions rather than a large integration graph.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Use channels as control surfaces, not as permission systems

The Gateway connects OpenClaw to chat applications you already use. A channel determines how you send requests and receive results; it does not automatically make a workflow safe. Keep administrative commands in a private channel, restrict bot access, and separate test and production conversations. If several people can message the same bot, define who may approve an action and how an approval is bound to a specific run.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

Telegram is a sensible first channel for a personal test because it needs a bot token and no plugin installation. Once the workflow is stable, you can evaluate another supported channel for team operations. Do not assume that a channel listed in documentation has identical authentication, message-size, attachment, or webhook behavior; verify those details for your installed release.

Approval gates and security controls

OpenClaw can reason about a task, but it cannot know your organization’s risk tolerance unless you encode it. Use these controls for every connected service:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Least privilege: grant read-only scopes for analysis and draft workflows. Add create or update permissions only for a named resource.
  • Explicit confirmation: require a separate approval before sending messages, publishing content, deleting data, changing permissions, placing orders, issuing refunds, or charging an account.
  • Data minimization: pass only the fields needed for the task. Redact secrets, unnecessary personal data, and unrelated records.
  • Auditability: retain the original trigger, inputs, proposed actions, approval identity, and final result. A human-readable summary makes later review possible.
  • Idempotency: use an event identifier or unique output name so retries do not duplicate a message, payment action, or record.
  • Failure isolation: stop on an authentication error, malformed input, or unexpected destination rather than guessing.
  • Credential hygiene: store tokens in the supported secret mechanism, rotate them, and revoke unused connections.

Start with read-and-draft automation and add write or payment access only after testing. Advanced capabilities require careful configuration whenever third-party services or sensitive data are connected.

Test, observe, and troubleshoot a run

Test the trigger, tool call, output, and approval independently. A workflow that responds in chat but fails to save a file has a different fault from one that never receives the trigger.

Symptom Likely area What to check
No response in the chat Channel token, Gateway, or access policy Confirm the bot token, permitted sender, Gateway process, and channel status
Scheduled run never starts Daemon, host uptime, or time zone Check that the host stayed online, the schedule uses the intended zone, and the workflow is enabled
Tool call is denied Scope or approval rule Inspect the connected account’s permissions and whether the operation requires confirmation
Output is incomplete Input selection or model instruction Verify that the intended file or event was available and ask for source identifiers and an exception list
Duplicate result Retry or repeated event Add an event identifier, deduplication rule, or unique output path before enabling writes
Unexpected external change Overbroad instruction or credential Revoke or narrow the credential, inspect the run history, and restore from the service’s own recovery tools

Troubleshooting material names these diagnostic commands: openclaw status, openclaw gateway status, openclaw logs --follow, openclaw doctor, and openclaw channels status --probe. Command availability can vary by release, so confirm the current syntax in the official documentation. Run status checks first, follow the logs while reproducing one failure, then use the doctor and channel probe commands if your version supports them.

Where the no-code promise ends

Plain-language automation removes much of the programming work, but it does not eliminate configuration. Lobster Shell uses typed YAML workflows, and custom skills require a folder with a SKILL.md. Connectors still need authentication, scopes, field mappings, schedules, and error policies. Even a conversational workflow benefits from explicit structured requirements when the consequences of a mistake are high.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OpenClaw’s identity and supported features are described inconsistently by third-party material: one description frames it as a local personal agent reachable through many chat applications, while another emphasizes WhatsApp and SMS. The official snippets support the broader chat-app framing, so do not assume a WhatsApp- or SMS-only limitation. Similarly, runtime versions, onboarding flags, and extension behavior should be checked against docs.openclaw.ai for the release you are deploying.

A repeatable launch checklist

  • Define one trigger and one measurable output.
  • Choose a 24/7 host and confirm its time zone.
  • Authenticate the model without exposing the key in prompts.
  • Connect Telegram or another supported channel and restrict senders.
  • Attach one least-privilege tool or test dataset.
  • Write explicit read, write, approval, and failure rules.
  • Run a manual test before enabling the schedule or webhook.
  • Test empty, normal, malformed, duplicate, and delayed inputs.
  • Inspect logs and verify the result against source data.
  • Keep the workflow read-and-draft until repeated runs are trustworthy.
  • Add one write permission at a time, with confirmation for high-impact actions.
  • Document the owner, credentials, output location, schedule, and recovery procedure.

This approach lets you gain the convenience of conversational automation without treating an AI agent as an unreviewed administrator. OpenClaw is most useful when it handles interpretation and drafting while your rules, approvals, and deterministic tools control what can actually happen.
