Link building is the process of getting other websites to link to pages on your site. Links can help search engines find pages, give context about what those pages cover, and bring visitors who click through. But more backlinks do not automatically mean higher rankings: search uses many signals, and the available correlation data does not prove that acquiring links causes a ranking increase.
What link building means
When another website links to one of your pages, that link is a backlink. Link building is the work of earning or obtaining those links. Common approaches include creating something worth citing, asking a relevant site owner to consider a resource, and adding accurate business information to appropriate listings. This is an industry guide’s way of grouping tactics, not an official Google classification. Ahrefs’ link-building guide describes these approaches, along with buying links—a practice that needs an important distinction between legitimate advertising and attempts to buy ranking credit.
Why links can matter to search visibility
Google says links help it discover pages to crawl and serve as a signal for understanding relevance. A link can also help a person move from a source page to a useful destination. Google’s guidance recommends descriptive, reasonably concise anchor text—the clickable words—so people and Google can understand what the linked page is about. It also recommends linking related pages within your own site; each page you care about should be reachable through at least one internal link. Google’s link best practices explain these uses.

Links are one part of a larger ranking system, not a guaranteed shortcut. In 2025, Ahrefs reported a Spearman correlation of 0.248 between backlink count and top-20 ranking positions in its study of the one million highest-volume US keywords. Ahrefs characterized its observed correlations as weak or very weak and cautioned that correlation does not establish causation. The result is one vendor’s observational analysis, not a Google statement or evidence that getting a link will move a page up in results. Ahrefs’ 2025 SEO statistics provides the context for the figure.

Practical ways to build links
Create something worth citing
Publish a genuinely useful resource: for example, original data, a clear guide, a tool, or a reference that fills a need for a particular audience. Then make relevant people aware of it. Promotion can help the right editors and site owners find the resource, but it cannot guarantee a citation.
Make relevant, specific requests
Contact a site owner or editor when you can explain why a particular page would help that site’s readers. Identify the relevant resource and its practical value. Keep the request truthful, and let the publisher choose how to describe the link rather than demanding an exact-match keyword anchor.

Keep real business listings accurate
For a real business, maintain accurate profiles and use directories that are relevant to its location or industry. These citations can help prospective customers find the business. Do not treat bulk directory submissions as a reliable ranking tactic; links that are easy to add may have little or no value in Google’s eyes.

Paid sponsorships and advertisements can be legitimate when the commercial relationship is clear and the link is qualified. Google says paid links are not a policy violation when appropriately marked with rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow". Affiliate publishers should use rel="sponsored" for affiliate links. Paying for a link intended to pass ranking credit is different and can violate Google’s spam policies. Google’s guidance on qualifying outbound links covers these attributes.
How to judge a link opportunity
Before pursuing a placement, ask whether it helps readers and fits the page—not whether a third-party score promises a ranking lift.
Rank #3
- Relevance: Would the source page’s audience reasonably benefit from the destination?
- Editorial reason: Would an editor choose to cite the page because it adds useful information or functionality?
- Referral value: Could the placement help a person discover a worthwhile resource even if search rankings do not change?
- Natural anchor text: Does the clickable wording describe the destination in context without forcing keywords?
- Transparency: If money or another commercial relationship is involved, is it clear and is the link properly qualified?
There is no universal minimum number of backlinks, ideal anchor-text percentage, or domain-authority threshold established here as a Google rule. Google’s guidance also says there is no magical ideal number of links on a page. A third-party authority metric should not be mistaken for Google’s own scoring system.
Link practices to avoid
Google defines link spam as creating links to or from a site primarily to manipulate search rankings. Its examples include buying or selling links for ranking purposes, excessive link exchanges, automated link creation, and certain advertorial or guest-post links that pass ranking credit. Google says sites that violate its spam policies may rank lower or may not appear in results. Review Google’s spam policies before paying for, exchanging, or automating links.

- Do not buy links intended to pass ranking credit or sell links on that basis.
- Do not arrange link exchanges at excessive scale.
- Do not use automated systems to create links.
- Do not publish paid guest posts or advertorials that pass ranking credit without proper qualification.
An unfamiliar or unsolicited backlink is not automatically harmful, and the policy examples do not make routine disavowal a default cleanup step. Focus on the links you choose to create or sponsor, and keep those practices transparent and useful to readers.
