You can build a WidgetKit home screen widget without a custom backend when it can display data already available on the device or data that changes predictably. You still need an app and a widget extension: the app supplies SwiftUI content and dated timeline entries, while iOS controls when the widget is rendered and when it asks for new data. A backend is optional for local data, not a way around WidgetKit’s update schedule.
When a widget can work without a backend
A widget needs a source for the information it displays, but that source does not have to be a server. If the widget can render from locally available or sufficiently static data, the app can prepare timeline entries on the device. If it depends on shared or frequently changing remote state, a server may still be needed to provide that state; WidgetKit’s timeline model applies either way. Apple describes the framework in its WidgetKit documentation and discusses choosing a widget update strategy in its widget update guidance.
“Without a backend” does not mean “without an app.” The app and widget extension are separate processes, and the extension is not continuously active just because its widget is visible. Design the widget so it can render from the data represented in its timeline entries, without depending on the main app being open or running continuously. Apple’s WidgetKit overview explains this system-managed model.
Apple’s documentation does not establish one universal local-storage design for every widget. Choose a persistence and data-sharing approach that fits the app, and confirm it against the APIs and deployment targets you support rather than assuming a particular storage technology is required.

How WidgetKit timelines control what appears
A timeline contains dated entries describing the widget’s content over time, along with a policy for when WidgetKit should request another timeline. The dates are schedule inputs, not promises that the widget will change on that exact minute. Apple puts it plainly: “WidgetKit may not update the widget’s view exactly at a timeline entry’s date.” See Apple’s timeline documentation.
Choose a policy based on the data
.atEnd: Request a new timeline after the last entry in the current one. This suits data with known future states..after(_ date:): Ask WidgetKit to request another timeline no earlier than the specified date. It is not a guaranteed display deadline..never: Do not request timelines automatically. The app can request a reload through WidgetCenter when a meaningful local change occurs.
Use future entries when the app can predict changes in advance. For example, a widget showing a locally stored schedule can supply entries for upcoming states instead of expecting a fresh app run at each change. The right choice depends on whether changes are predictable or triggered by an event; none of these policies bypasses the system’s scheduling. Apple documents the policies in Timeline.

Plan for reload budgets, not an exact refresh interval
WidgetKit dynamically budgets reloads. Apple says typical intervals vary and recommends that timeline entries be at least about five minutes apart. That is guidance for spacing entries, not a promise that the widget will refresh every five minutes. Visibility and the time since the last reload are among the factors that affect the budget. If the app’s local data changes, it can ask WidgetCenter to reload a widget kind or all configured widgets. A reload request is still subject to WidgetKit’s scheduling and budget; it does not force an immediate redraw. See Apple’s WidgetCenter API documentation.

- Provide future timeline entries where changes are known in advance.
- Reserve reload requests for meaningful changes rather than treating them as a timer.
- Do not design around a one-minute refresh cadence or promise users an exact update time.
Add user choices with widget configuration
For a widget whose content can vary by user selection, define parameters using a custom type that conforms to WidgetConfigurationIntent, then use AppIntentTimelineProvider to incorporate those values into timeline entries. This lets the selected configuration shape the data the widget presents. Apple’s configurable widget documentation covers this approach.
Apple’s guidance distinguishes this App Intents approach from the earlier SiriKit Intents approach, which applied before iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS 14. Check the SDK behavior and deployment targets relevant to the versions your app supports before choosing an implementation path.

Handle widget actions locally with App Intents
Buttons and toggles in a widget can invoke App Intents without launching the app. The system runs the intent’s perform() method and reloads the timeline when the action returns. For the updated timeline to reflect the action, persist the result it needs before perform() returns. Apple explains the interaction model in its interactive widgets documentation.

This works well when the action can be completed on-device. If the intent also synchronizes with a remote service, that network step is an application choice, not a WidgetKit requirement. Because remote synchronization can fail, do not leave an optimistic toggle showing success when the server rejected or never received the change. Correct the stored and displayed state, and communicate the failure in a way appropriate to the app.

Choose the implementation approach that fits the widget

For server-driven cases, Apple also documents APNs and WidgetKit push notifications as optional update paths in its update guidance. Their existence does not make a backend necessary for a widget whose data and actions are handled locally.
