To build a governed AI agent with LangChain, define the business workflow first, choose the simplest framework layer that gives you enough control, and put explicit checks around consequential actions. LangChain’s agent implementations use LangGraph primitives; when you need direct control over workflow stages, routing, shared state, pauses, and recovery, construct the workflow with LangGraph. Neither choice automatically makes an agent safe: governance comes from the permissions, approval points, persistence, deployment decisions, and evaluations your team implements and validates.
This guide lays out an enterprise-ready design path, from workflow mapping through production monitoring. It distinguishes documented framework capabilities from controls that your application must supply, and treats deployment details as subject to change.
What “governed agent” means in practice
A governed agent is not simply a language model connected to tools. It is a workflow with defined boundaries: what information it can use, which actions it may take, when it must stop for human input, what state is retained, and how the team detects and investigates failures. These controls should be expressed in the application and its operating procedures, not assumed from the word “agent” or the framework choice.
LangChain and LangGraph serve related but distinct roles. LangChain offers a higher-level agent implementation for tasks where its standard structure is sufficient. Its documented agents use LangGraph primitives. LangGraph lets developers describe a process more directly as nodes, transitions, and shared state. LangChain’s learning guidance points toward direct LangGraph implementation when deeper customization is needed.

That distinction is an architectural choice, not a claim that one layer is inherently safer. A simple agent can still need carefully scoped tools and approvals; a custom graph can still be poorly governed if its transitions, state, or failure paths are not designed and tested.
Choose the framework layer to match the control you need
| Choice | Best fit | What the team controls | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Higher-level LangChain agent implementation | A comparatively straightforward task where the standard agent behavior fits the workflow. | The agent setup and the surrounding application controls, such as available tools, authorization, and evaluation. | It provides less direct control over the full workflow than explicitly constructing a graph; confirm that its behavior fits the process before relying on it. |
| Direct LangGraph workflow | A process that needs explicit workflow stages, routing, shared state, human pauses, or deliberate recovery behavior. | Nodes, transitions, state shape, and the points where execution can pause or branch. | The team takes on more workflow design and implementation responsibility. More explicit control does not itself guarantee correct behavior. |
Make this decision against the process requirements rather than a preference for a more elaborate architecture. If the workflow is short and low consequence, start with the higher-level implementation and test its boundaries. Move to direct graph construction when you need to express distinct stages, nontrivial routing, checkpointed pauses, or recovery rules that are not adequately represented by the simpler approach. Record the reason for the choice so later changes in business risk or process complexity trigger a review.
Also decide whether the workflow should follow fixed steps and transitions or allow model-directed routing. A fixed route is easier to inspect when the business process is predictable; model-directed routing may fit cases where the next step depends on interpretation, but it needs explicit boundaries and tests for unexpected or unsupported choices. In either design, define what happens when a step fails, required data is unavailable, or a retry could repeat an external action. The research supports comparing these design dimensions, but does not establish one routing pattern as universally preferable.

Begin with the intended outcome and the actions the system might take. Break the process into steps and classify each as model reasoning, data retrieval, an external action, or human input. This makes it easier to distinguish a model’s suggestion from an action that changes a record, sends a communication, or otherwise affects someone outside the workflow.
Build a workflow map
- Define the boundary. State which users and business cases the workflow supports, what it must not do, and which systems or records are in scope.
- List the stages. Write each step in the order it normally occurs, including validation, retrieval, review, action, and completion. Do not hide external actions inside a general “agent” step.
- Identify decisions and routes. For each branch, specify what condition leads to it and what happens if required information is missing, contradictory, or outside the allowed scope.
- Mark human decisions. Identify the actions that need a person’s judgment or authorization. Place the review point before the action, not after an irreversible consequence.
- Define completion and failure. Specify what counts as a successful result, when the workflow should stop, and what a user or operator sees when it cannot proceed safely.
In a LangGraph design, each meaningful step can be represented as a node, with transitions describing the allowed next steps and shared state carrying information between them. Use the graph to make the process legible: an action should not be reachable merely because the model produced plausible-sounding text. The official LangGraph walkthrough describes this node, transition, and state model.

Keep state structured and prompts task-specific
Store the underlying information in state in a form your application can validate and reuse. LangGraph’s walkthrough recommends retaining raw data in state and formatting prompts when needed, rather than storing only preformatted prompt text. This separation helps keep the workflow’s durable facts distinct from the wording used to ask the model to perform a particular step.
Before implementation, decide what each state field represents, which step writes it, which steps may read it, and how missing or invalid values are handled. Avoid treating conversational prose as the sole record of an approval, a retrieved fact, or a completed action. At each transition, validate the values needed by the next step; if validation fails, route to correction, human review, or a safe stop rather than letting later stages infer missing details.
State design is also a recovery decision. Identify which facts must survive a pause or restart so that a resumed workflow can continue from an understood point. Keep the representation structured enough to distinguish, for example, information gathered for a proposed action from an action that has actually completed. This reduces ambiguity when a run is interrupted or reviewed later. The workflow should also define whether a retry is safe; a repeated read may differ in consequence from repeating a write or external communication.
Constrain tools and put approval before consequential actions
List the tools the agent can call and the effects each tool can produce. Give it only the capabilities needed for its assigned job. A read-only lookup and a write operation are different risk classes even when they access the same system. Where the workflow can make a material change or communicate externally, determine whether the action must pause for a person, and define what information that person needs to make a decision.
Design the review point
- Specify the trigger. Name the action or condition that requires approval, such as sending an external communication or making a change with material business impact.
- Show the reviewer the decision context. Present the proposed action and the information needed to assess it. Do not make approval a blind confirmation of a model-generated recommendation.
- Define allowed responses. Decide whether the reviewer can approve, reject, or request changes, and how each response affects the workflow.
- Keep authorization meaningful. Confirm that the person approving the action has authority for it under the organization’s process; an interrupt alone does not establish that authorization.
- Test interrupted cases. Include rejection, changed input, delayed response, and interrupted execution in validation rather than testing only the happy path.
LangGraph documents human review using interrupt behavior together with a checkpointer: execution pauses, state is persisted, and the workflow can resume when human input arrives. This is a pattern your application can implement, not an automatic governance guarantee. Confirm that the chosen persistence setup retains the state needed to resume, that the resumed path applies the human response correctly, and that repeated or stale approvals cannot authorize an unintended action.

Deep Agents separately documents controls such as human approval for sensitive operations and declarative filesystem permissions. These are features of that documented offering and should not be described as defaults available in every LangChain-based agent. Check the selected library and version before depending on them; if a particular control is not available in your implementation, design an equivalent application-level boundary or exclude the risky operation.

Plan persistence and deployment as separate decisions
A workflow that pauses or needs recovery depends on state being persisted reliably. Deployment planning should therefore cover both where the runtime operates and how its supporting data and services are managed. LangSmith deployment documentation describes Agent Servers and supporting infrastructure that includes PostgreSQL, Redis, secret storage, and autoscalers. The specific operational arrangement depends on the deployment choice and current product configuration.
Compare operating models
| Decision area | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Managed Cloud | Which deployment region and plan terms apply? Which parts of the runtime and supporting infrastructure does the service operate? | Data location, operational responsibility, and available configuration depend on the current service offering. |
| Hybrid | Which components remain in your environment, which are managed, and how do identity, networking, secrets, and persistence cross the boundary? | A hybrid arrangement can divide responsibilities; document who operates and secures each component. |
| Self-hosted | Who runs the application and supporting services, maintains them, handles upgrades, and responds to incidents? | Operating the runtime yourself also means owning its reliability and operational maintenance. |
| Persistence and checkpointing | What state must survive a pause, restart, or retry? Where is it stored, who can access it, and how is its lifecycle managed? | Human review and recovery depend on the required state being available and protected. |
| Scale and availability | What workload and recovery expectations must the deployment meet, and how will capacity and failures be monitored? | Documented product settings are not universal performance or availability guarantees. |
LangSmith’s deployment documentation identifies US and EU regions for Cloud deployments and says custom PostgreSQL is available for hybrid and self-hosted deployments. These are product details, not a blanket assurance about data residency, compliance, service limits, or suitability for a particular organization. Verify the current region availability, plan terms, and technical configuration with the applicable documentation and procurement process before making a deployment decision.
The LangSmith data-plane page also lists a Production-type deployment scaling automatically up to 10 containers, with autoscaling metrics and thresholds. Treat this as a documented product setting that may be plan- or configuration-specific, not as a capacity estimate or performance benchmark. Confirm that the current configuration applies to your deployment before using it in capacity planning.
Do not make a cost comparison from architecture labels alone. Cloud, hybrid, and self-hosted arrangements distribute operational work differently, but the reviewed documentation does not establish pricing or a like-for-like total-cost figure. For procurement, confirm current plan limits and commercial terms, then account for which team operates the runtime, persistence, and supporting services. Separate documented product configuration from your own workload and staffing assumptions.

Evaluate behavior before release and monitor it in production
Evaluation should check the workflow, not just whether a model can produce a fluent answer. Build a set of representative cases with expected outcomes, including cases that should route to a person or stop. Evaluate retrieval, routing, state handling, tool selection, approval behavior, and failure handling at the steps where they matter. A test set is useful only when expected behavior is clear enough for a reviewer to decide whether the workflow passed.
Pre-release evaluation checklist
- Include routine cases and edge cases, such as missing or conflicting inputs.
- Check that the agent uses only the tools and data appropriate to the case.
- Verify that transitions lead to the intended next step and that unsupported cases stop or escalate.
- Test that consequential actions pause at the intended approval point and resume according to the human response.
- Check state across pauses and retries so the workflow does not lose required context or repeat an action unexpectedly.
- Track failures by category and use them to improve test coverage and controls before widening access.
After deployment, LangSmith online evaluations can monitor production traces, flag unusual behavior for review, and feed production failures into offline evaluation work. Use those signals as a feedback loop: investigate a failure, determine whether it arose from input quality, routing, state, tool behavior, or an inadequate control, then add a representative case to the offline evaluation set. Monitoring helps reveal behavior that deserves attention; it is not proof that the system is safe, correct, or compliant.
Assign clear operational ownership for reviewing flagged traces and failures. Decide who triages an alert, who can disable or restrict a tool, how issues are escalated, and what evidence is retained for investigation. The useful outcome of observability is not a dashboard alone, but a process that turns observed problems into a decision, corrective action, and a test that helps detect recurrence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a staged rollout and keep controls reviewable
Do not treat initial release as the end of governance. Begin with a limited workflow scope, then expand only when the team can explain how the system behaves at each consequential boundary and has a way to respond when it does not behave as expected.
Recommended Free Tools
- Document the design. Keep the workflow map, tool inventory, state definitions, approval rules, deployment decisions, and evaluation cases together with the implementation.
- Review high-impact paths. Have the relevant engineering, security, product, and business owners inspect the actions the system can take and the conditions that permit them.
- Release with bounded access. Limit the initial users, data, and actions to the scope exercised by evaluation. Keep high-impact operations behind the reviewed controls.
- Observe and triage. Use traces and online evaluations to identify cases for investigation; record the cause and whether the issue requires a workflow change, a tool boundary, or a new test.
- Re-evaluate after material changes. Revisit behavior whenever prompts, tools, state shape, routing, data sources, persistence, or deployment configuration change.
This approach keeps governance attached to the running workflow. A change to a tool or transition can alter the actions available to the agent even if the prompt looks unchanged, so review the effective system rather than relying on prompt review alone.

A practical architecture decision checklist
- Use the higher-level LangChain agent path when the task is straightforward and the standard implementation meets the requirements.
- Use direct LangGraph construction when stages, routing, shared state, pauses, or recovery need explicit orchestration.
- Model the process in nodes and transitions before tuning prompts, and define what happens when the path cannot safely continue.
- Keep raw data structured in state and format prompts for the relevant task rather than making prompt text the only durable representation.
- Require review where consequence warrants it and connect interrupts to checkpointed state if the workflow needs to pause and resume.
- Choose deployment based on data location and operational ownership, then verify current product region and configuration details.
- Evaluate before release and monitor after release, feeding production issues back into offline test cases without mistaking monitoring for a safety guarantee.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should a team use LangChain’s higher-level agent implementation instead of building directly with LangGraph?
Start with the higher-level agent implementation when the task is straightforward and its standard behavior fits. Choose direct LangGraph construction when you need explicit control over stages, routing, shared state, pauses, or recovery. Neither choice automatically provides governance.
How does a LangGraph workflow pause for human approval and resume?
The documented pattern combines interrupt behavior with a checkpointer so execution pauses and state is persisted. The workflow can resume when human input arrives. The application still needs to validate the approval path, reviewer authority, persistence setup, and behavior for rejection or changed input.
Does LangChain automatically include approval controls or filesystem permissions?
No. Deep Agents documents certain controls, including approval for sensitive operations and declarative filesystem permissions, but these should not be assumed to be defaults of every LangChain-based agent. Check the chosen library and version.

Compare Cloud, hybrid, and self-hosted options for data location, operational ownership, persistence, scaling, and integration with existing infrastructure. LangSmith documentation lists US and EU Cloud regions, custom PostgreSQL for hybrid and self-hosted deployments, and a Production-type scaling setting of up to 10 containers; availability and applicability can change, so verify current plan terms and configuration.
Are LangSmith online evaluations enough to prove an agent is safe or correct?
No. Online evaluations can monitor production traces, flag unusual behavior for review, and feed failures into offline evaluation work. They are a feedback mechanism, not proof of safety or correctness. Investigate issues and use them to improve tests and controls.
What does the research establish about deployment costs?
It does not establish pricing or a comparable total-cost figure. Confirm current commercial terms and plan limits, and compare the operational responsibilities of the deployment options before procurement.
The Bottom Line
Build governance into the workflow rather than expecting it from the framework name. Map stages and transitions, keep state structured, place human review before consequential actions, and choose persistence and deployment deliberately. Evaluate representative cases before launch, then use production traces and failures to strengthen offline tests and controls. Verify current LangSmith configuration and commercial details before making deployment or capacity commitments.
