To build business automation with OpenClaw, rent a Linux VPS, install a current Node.js release and OpenClaw, run openclaw onboard --install-daemon, connect a messaging channel and an LLM API key, then harden the server before granting access to business systems. A practical baseline is 4 GB of RAM; 8 GB is safer when several automations or users will run concurrently.

This arrangement keeps the gateway, credentials and automation traffic under your control instead of placing the agent runtime in a hosted automation platform. The trade-off is operational responsibility: you must patch the operating system, protect SSH, control skills and secrets, monitor the service and budget separately for model and search usage.

What OpenClaw VPS business automation is

OpenClaw is an agent gateway that receives a task through a connected channel, calls an LLM and other services, performs the permitted actions and returns a result. On a VPS, the gateway runs continuously as a background service, so a workflow does not depend on your laptop remaining open.

Typical business workflows include synchronising CRM records, processing orders, collecting information from websites, forwarding DevOps alerts, preparing social-media updates and producing recurring reports. The useful unit is not a generic chatbot; it is a narrowly scoped agent with defined inputs, tools, permissions and an output channel.

A self-hosted gateway can be valuable when privacy, contractual confidentiality or compliance rules make sending all operational data to a cloud automation service undesirable. Self-hosting does not automatically make a workflow compliant: logs, backups, API providers, connected channels and the VPS operator still need their own review.

The official documentation is the authority for changing commands and supported versions. Start at docs.openclaw.ai, especially when an installer or command behaves differently from this guide.

OpenClaw VPS requirements

There is no single published gateway-RAM number in the official summaries available for this release. Third-party sizing guides vary considerably, so use the following as planning ranges rather than guarantees.

Workload CPU and memory guidance Storage guidance How to interpret it
One simple API-only bot 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM At least 20 GB SSD A claimed lower floor for a single simple Telegram bot. It leaves little headroom for builds, logs or additional services.
Development or testing 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM 20 GB or more SSD A practical starting point for experimentation and one modest workflow.
Light production 2 cores, 4 GB RAM 40–60 GB SSD More storage helps with Docker layers, logs, temporary files and backups.
Several automations or users 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM At least 20 GB SSD, with additional space for data A safer business baseline when agents run concurrently or perform heavier builds.

Plan for at least 4 GB of RAM for a business installation and 8 GB when multiple automations or users are expected. A 1 GB VPS may kill the npm installation or the running process under memory pressure. Monitor actual usage and resize rather than assuming the smallest plan will remain reliable.

Operating system and network prerequisites

  • Use a supported Linux distribution with current security updates. Ubuntu 22.04 is used in one setup walkthrough, but check the current OpenClaw support list before choosing an image.
  • Have a public IPv4 address or another reliable way to reach the server for administration. Keep the gateway itself private unless a documented integration requires external access.
  • Have an LLM provider API key and credentials for each business service the workflow must call. Create keys with the narrowest permissions available.
  • Use a domain and TLS reverse proxy only if you intentionally publish a web endpoint. The gateway port shown by the official material is 18789.

Choose a native or Docker VPS deployment

Deployment Best fit Advantages Costs and cautions
Native Linux installation One gateway where simple service management and low overhead matter Fewer layers, direct systemd integration through the daemon installer and straightforward access to host tools You must manage Node, npm, OS packages and isolation yourself.
Official Docker setup Teams that want a repeatable image and container boundaries The official script creates host directories, builds an openclaw:local image, runs onboarding, generates a Gateway token, synchronises .env and starts the gateway through the repository’s docker-compose.yml. Container storage, permissions, upgrades and backups need explicit management. A build that exits with code 137 means the VM ran out of memory.

Some third-party Docker instructions show a web interface on port 3000, but the official material identifies port 18789 for the gateway. Do not open port 3000 merely because a blog uses it; verify the service’s current binding and expose only the port you actually need.

Check the VPS virtualisation type before buying if Docker is important. Third-party guides warn that Docker may not run properly on OpenVZ-based systems. KVM-based virtual machines or a provider that explicitly supports Docker are safer choices.

How to set up OpenClaw on a VPS with the native installer

1. Create the server and an administrative path

  1. Choose a Linux image, a region appropriate for your users and a plan with at least 4 GB RAM for a business pilot.
  2. During provisioning, add an SSH public key. Do not plan to administer the machine with a shared password.
  3. Record the server address, the initial distribution user and the provider’s recovery procedure. Keep this information outside the OpenClaw prompt and configuration.
  4. Log in over SSH and apply operating-system updates before installing the agent. Reboot if the kernel or critical libraries require it.

2. Harden SSH and the host before connecting accounts

Do this before adding CRM, mail, commerce or messaging credentials. Create a non-root administrator, grant only the required administrative privilege, and test a second SSH session before disabling the initial access method.

  • Use key-only SSH authentication and disable password authentication after confirming the key works.
  • Allow SSH and only the application ports you genuinely need in the firewall. Keep the gateway bound to a private interface when possible.
  • Enable brute-force protection and review authentication logs.
  • Patch the operating system on a schedule and remove packages and services you do not use.
  • Store API keys in protected environment or secret-management facilities, not in shell history, tickets or chat messages. Restrict file permissions and rotate keys after staff or workflow changes.
  • Install only reviewed skills and maintain a curated allowlist. An agent that can execute arbitrary tools is materially more dangerous than one limited to a few APIs.

3. Install Node.js and OpenClaw

The current official install page lists Node 24.16 or newer, or Node 26.1 or newer, and recommends Node 26. When Node is absent, the installer provisions Node 26 on macOS and Node 24 LTS on Linux. Do not substitute an older or unsupported version because a third-party tutorial mentions it; a command-line release can reject a version even when an older guide worked.

On Linux, macOS or WSL2, use the official installer and defer onboarding until the server is prepared:

curl -fsSL https://openclaw.ai/install.sh | bash -s -- --no-onboard

The --no-onboard flag skips the interactive wizard. The same page lists npm, pnpm and bun as alternatives. Recent npm versions may require an explicit --allow-scripts=openclaw; the page says that option is unnecessary on npm 11.15 and earlier. If you choose a package-manager route, verify the installed Node version first and follow the current command on the official page rather than copying an old blog post.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Run onboarding and install the background service

Start the official wizard with the daemon option:

openclaw onboard --install-daemon

On Linux, this installs a systemd service that starts at boot and can restart after a crash. The wizard requests the gateway settings, the LLM provider key and channel configuration. If you postpone service installation, the equivalent later command is:

openclaw gateway install

Keep the generated Gateway token private. Treat it like a password: do not paste it into a public issue, commit it to a repository or include it in a screenshot.

5. Verify the installation

Run the built-in checks before connecting production data:

openclaw doctor
openclaw gateway status
openclaw dashboard
  • openclaw doctor identifies configuration and environment problems.
  • openclaw gateway status confirms whether the service is installed and running.
  • openclaw dashboard opens the local administration UI according to the current installation.

If the status is healthy but the dashboard is unreachable, check the bind address, the local firewall and any reverse proxy. Do not respond by opening every inbound port.

6. Connect a channel and an LLM key

Choose one channel for the first test and one narrowly scoped business task. A common walkthrough uses Telegram: create a bot with Telegram’s @BotFather, copy the bot token into the channel configuration and send a test message. The exact field names can change, so use the channel instructions shown by your installed version.

Add the LLM API key during onboarding or in the supported secret configuration. Set usage limits and provider-side spending alerts where available. A successful reply proves connectivity, not that the agent has safe permissions.

7. Prove one workflow end to end

  1. Send a harmless request that exercises the channel and model but cannot modify customer data.
  2. Confirm the gateway receives the message, calls the intended model and returns a response.
  3. Add one business API with read-only credentials and test a lookup.
  4. Review logs for secrets, unexpected tool calls, retries and excessive token usage.
  5. Only then grant a narrowly scoped write permission, add approval for irreversible actions and document the rollback procedure.

How to use the official Docker path on a VPS

The official Docker guide supplies a script rather than a one-line package install. It creates persistent host directories, builds the local image, runs onboarding, generates a Gateway token, synchronises the .env file and starts the gateway with the repository’s Compose file. Use that script and the matching repository revision so the environment variables and volume paths remain consistent.

  1. Provision a Docker-capable VPS with enough memory for both the image build and the running gateway. A failed build with exit code 137 indicates insufficient memory, not an OpenClaw workflow error.
  2. Install the distribution’s supported Docker Engine and Compose plugin, then confirm that the daemon starts on boot.
  3. Run the official OpenClaw Docker setup from a checked-out or otherwise verified copy of the current repository.
  4. Review the generated .env, volume directories and token permissions before starting the stack.
  5. Start the Compose project, inspect container logs, and run a harmless channel test before adding business credentials.
  6. Back up the persistent directories and document how you will rebuild the image and restore the volumes.

Do not assume that a container is a security boundary for an over-permissioned agent. Limit mounted host paths, avoid mounting the Docker socket unless the documented integration requires it, and keep secrets out of image layers and source control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Designing reliable OpenClaw business automation

Start with a bounded trigger

Define exactly what starts the workflow: a message from an approved channel, a scheduled check, an order event or an alert. Reject unknown senders and ambiguous commands before the model receives sensitive context.

Separate read, decide and write stages

Give the agent read access first. Let it collect facts, produce a proposed action and request human approval for payments, refunds, account changes, outbound campaigns or deletion. Use separate credentials for read and write operations so a prompt injection cannot silently escalate every capability.

Make actions idempotent and observable

Assign an event or order identifier, record the action and make retries safe. Keep timestamps, outcome codes and a correlation ID in a log that excludes tokens and personal data. Alerts should distinguish a model refusal, an API failure and a completed business action.

Examples of useful first workflows

  • CRM synchronisation: read a new form submission, validate required fields, create or update one record and return the record ID.
  • Order triage: classify an order exception, gather the relevant status and prepare a response for approval rather than issuing an automatic refund.
  • DevOps alert routing: accept an alert, attach recent diagnostic data and route it to the on-call channel with a link to the incident.
  • Reporting: collect figures from approved systems, show the time window and source for each figure, and deliver a scheduled summary.
  • Web data collection: fetch only permitted pages, respect terms and rate limits, store the retrieval time and flag missing or changed fields.

Security controls for a production VPS

A misconfigured VPS has a larger exposure surface than a managed SaaS workflow because you own the host and its network boundary. Apply these controls before live data is enabled:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Patch management: install OS and dependency updates on a defined cadence and test OpenClaw after upgrades.
  • Network minimisation: firewall all inbound traffic by default, allow SSH from trusted addresses where practical, and avoid publishing the gateway port directly to the internet.
  • Identity: use individual administrator accounts, key-based SSH and least privilege. Remove former staff keys promptly.
  • Secrets: use separate keys per integration and environment; rotate them after a suspected leak. Do not put secrets in prompts or source repositories.
  • Skill governance: review, pin and allowlist skills. Disable tools a workflow does not need.
  • Backups: back up configuration and persistent data securely, test a restore and keep a recovery path for a failed disk or provider outage.
  • Monitoring: watch service health, memory, disk, restart counts, authentication failures and model/API spend.
  • Data handling: define retention for prompts, responses and logs, and remove personal or regulated data that the workflow does not require.

OpenClaw VPS cost and capacity planning

VPS prices change by provider, region and billing term. Third-party comparisons place entry-level plans suitable for a small OpenClaw deployment at roughly $4–$6 per month. Examples in those comparisons include a 2-vCPU, 4-GB plan at €3.79 (about $4 at the cited conversion) and a basic plan at $6. These are estimates, not guaranteed current prices; check the provider’s live page before purchasing.

Cost category What to budget for Why it changes
VPS About $4–$6/month for an entry-level 2-vCPU/4-GB class plan in cited comparisons Region, storage, bandwidth, backups and provider pricing are volatile.
LLM usage Separate API budget Depends on model, prompt size, frequency, tool calls and retries.
Search or scraping Separate credits where a service charges per request Collection volume and provider limits determine the bill.
Operations Backups, monitoring, extra storage and possible support Production resilience costs more than a bare compute instance.

Track cost per workflow, not only total monthly spend. A cheap VPS can still produce an expensive bill if a loop repeatedly calls a model or a search API. Add maximum steps, timeouts, daily quotas and alerts before opening a channel to a broad audience.

Troubleshooting common installation failures

The installer or npm process is killed

Low memory is the usual explanation on a 1 GB machine; the operating system may terminate npm or OpenClaw under pressure. Resize to at least 4 GB, stop competing services, add temporary swap only as a supplement and retry. Swap does not replace adequate RAM for a busy production gateway.

The CLI rejects the Node version

Check node --version and compare it with the official requirement of Node 24.16+ or Node 26.1+. Install the supported release through the official installer, then reopen the shell so the new PATH is active. Do not rely on a third-party claim that an older or intermediate version is acceptable.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The daemon is not running after reboot

Run openclaw gateway status, inspect the service logs, and run openclaw doctor. Confirm that the service user can read its configuration and secrets, that the working directory still exists and that the host did not boot with a full disk.

The dashboard or channel cannot connect

Confirm the gateway is listening on the configured interface and official port 18789, then check the host firewall and any reverse proxy. A Docker tutorial’s port 3000 may describe a different wrapper, not the gateway. For a channel, verify the bot token, API key, webhook or polling mode and provider-side rate limits.

A Docker build exits with code 137

The official Docker guidance identifies exit code 137 as an out-of-memory condition. Resize the VM, stop other containers, remove unused build layers and run the build again. Preserve persistent configuration rather than deleting volumes blindly.

An automation repeats or performs an unsafe action

Disable the write credential, stop the affected workflow and inspect the event and tool logs. Add an idempotency key, a maximum retry count, explicit approval and narrower tool permissions before re-enabling it. Treat unexpected instructions in fetched web content as untrusted input.

Keeping the gateway maintainable

Write down the installed OpenClaw version, Node version, service name, channel configuration, allowed skills, API owners and restore steps. Test upgrades in a separate environment when the workflow is business-critical. After each upgrade, run openclaw doctor, check openclaw gateway status, send a harmless channel message and inspect resource and error metrics.

Review permissions at least quarterly and after every workflow change. Remove unused integrations, rotate credentials, verify backups by restoring a copy and check that logs do not retain information longer than the business requires.

When a VPS is the right choice

A VPS is a good fit when you need a persistent gateway, control over where operational data is processed, custom tools or predictable network access, and you can operate a Linux server securely. A hosted automation service may be simpler when your team cannot patch, monitor and recover a server, or when the workflow is small enough that provider-managed controls outweigh self-hosting benefits.

Choose Docker when repeatable builds and separation from the host are priorities and your VPS supports it. Choose the native install when you want the fewest moving parts and are comfortable managing the system service. In either case, begin with one read-mostly workflow, prove the controls and expand permissions only when the evidence from your own logs supports it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

The dependable path is: provision a supported Linux VPS, size it for at least 4 GB RAM, harden SSH and the firewall, install OpenClaw with the official script, run openclaw onboard --install-daemon, verify the gateway, connect one channel and API key, and test a tightly bounded workflow before adding write access. Keep the gateway private, govern skills and secrets, monitor memory and spend, and treat Docker’s resource and virtualisation requirements as deployment decisions rather than afterthoughts.
