To keep an Android location feature from draining the battery, match its update rate and accuracy to what the user is doing, stop location requests as soon as the feature ends, and use geofencing or batched updates instead of continuous polling when the task permits delay. Reserve a location foreground service for an active, user-visible session such as navigation or workout tracking.

Choose an architecture for the user’s task

There is no single best location mode. The right choice depends on whether the user can see the feature, how accurate the position must be, how quickly the app must react, and how long tracking should run. Android’s guidance distinguishes real-time foreground activity from passive background work and place-entry or exit events.

Use case Recommended approach Accuracy and timing Visibility and permission implications
Show a position or share it after a user action Request location for the bounded action and remove updates when it ends Start with approximate access; request precision only when the feature needs it Request foreground access in context while the relevant feature is visible
Map or other real-time feature in active use Request updates while the user is using the feature High accuracy and updates every few seconds can suit real-time needs; for non-real-time needs, Android recommends intervals of approximately two minutes or longer Keep the request tied to the visible activity and stop it when the session ends
Navigation or exercise tracking that continues while the user switches apps Use a location foreground service Choose the update rate and accuracy required by the active session Show the persistent notification; declare the location service type on Android 10 (API 29) and later
React to entering or leaving an area Use the Geofencing API when the product can tolerate notification delay Android’s scenario guidance suggests approximately five minutes’ responsiveness, or approximately ten minutes when more delay is acceptable Background access may be needed; request it only when this is essential to a core user-facing feature
Occasional location with no visible app component Use a delayed or batched request, or passive updates when feasible; first consider whether a one-time location, foreground session, or geofence meets the need Background requests on Android 8.0 (API 26) and later are throttled to only a few updates per hour Request background permission only when the feature genuinely requires it

Android documents a maximum of 100 registered geofences at one time. Its responsiveness values and limits describe platform guidance, not a guarantee that every device will deliver an event at an exact time. Android’s real-world location scenarios explain the trade-offs.

Set update rate and priority to the actual need

High accuracy and second-scale updates are justified when a user is actively watching a map or following navigation. They are usually wasteful for a feature that only needs a periodic estimate or an area transition. Android warns that sustained high-accuracy background requests substantially drain battery; prefer no-power or passive access, or balanced or low-power priority, when those options satisfy the feature.

  • Real-time foreground use: Request only the accuracy and cadence needed while the user is engaged. Stop promptly when the activity or session ends.
  • Non-real-time use: Android recommends approximately two minutes or longer between computations when real-time updates are unnecessary. This is scenario guidance, not a universal optimum.
  • Passive use: Receive locations produced for another app when possible. Passive callbacks can still lead to CPU or network work, so throttle processing triggered by them.
  • Area transitions: Geofencing is optimized for place-entry and exit behavior, avoiding continuous polling when the product can accept delayed notification.

For a non-foreground request, Android’s battery example uses a 10-minute computation interval with a 60-minute maximum delivery delay. That setup can deliver roughly six points in a batch about once an hour, reducing wakeups compared with immediate delivery. These are example API settings, not a measured percentage saving or a timing guarantee. See Android’s battery optimization guidance.

Stop requests reliably and allow batching

A location request that outlives the feature that needed it can continue using power without helping the user. Android calls failure to remove unneeded updates a common source of unnecessary battery drain. Pair each request with a clear stop condition, such as leaving the screen, ending a workout, or reaching a session timeout.

  1. Define when tracking starts and ends. Start updates in response to the user invoking the feature; stop them when that action or session finishes.
  2. Remove updates during cleanup. Ensure normal navigation away from the feature and other completion paths remove the location callback. Lifecycle-aware handling can help prevent requests from being left active.
  3. Set a finite duration. Give requests an expiration so a missed cleanup path does not keep them active indefinitely.
  4. Permit delayed delivery where acceptable. Set the desired computation cadence with setIntervalMillis() and allow batching with setMaxUpdateDelayMillis(). Android recommends a delivery delay that is a multiple of the interval.
  5. Keep callback work modest. Passive or batched delivery may reduce location wakeups, but expensive processing, storage, or network activity in response can still use energy.

Use a foreground service only for an active, user-visible session

A location foreground service is appropriate when the user starts a task that must keep tracking while another app is in front or the screen is off—for example, navigation or exercise tracking. The service keeps the task user-visible through a persistent notification; it is not a general-purpose way to hide background collection.

Declare android:foregroundServiceType="location" for a location foreground service on Android 10 (API 29) and later. A foreground service preserves foreground-location status in circumstances such as pressing Home or turning off the display, but starting one while the app is already in the background on Android 11 (API 30) and later does not bypass location permission rules. In that situation, background location permission is required. See Android’s scenario guidance and location permission documentation.

Request the least permission that supports the feature

Ask for foreground location when the user invokes a feature that needs it. Start with coarse, approximate access when that can serve the feature; ask for precise access only when there is a concrete need. If access to location without a visible app component is essential, explain why and request background access for that feature rather than bundling it into the initial request.

Foreground and background access

For apps targeting Android 11 (API 30) or later, requesting foreground and background location together is ignored and grants neither. Request foreground access first; ask for background access later if the user chooses a feature that requires it. On Android 11 and later, the user enables background access in Settings rather than through an “Allow all the time” choice in the runtime dialog. Explain the reason and keep the feature useful if the user declines. Android 10 and later require declaring ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION to request background permission at runtime; on earlier versions, background access was included with foreground location permission.

Approximate and precise access

On Android 12 (API 31) and later, a user can grant approximate location even when an app requests fine location. If precise access is truly necessary, request coarse and fine permission together and handle an approximate grant gracefully. Android describes approximate estimates as about 3 square kilometers for the stated location providers, while precise estimates are usually within about 50 meters and can sometimes be within a few meters or better. These are typical documentation descriptions, not guarantees for an individual fix. Background accuracy also follows the user’s foreground choice: approximate foreground access means approximate background access. See Android’s runtime permission guide and location permission overview.

Account for Android background limits and Play policy

Since Android 8.0 (API 26), ordinary background location access is limited to only a few updates each hour. An app that polls in the background should not assume it can obtain real-time fixes. This limit is described in Android’s background location limits documentation and the current background access guide.

Technical permission compliance does not guarantee distribution approval. Google Play separately restricts background location to eligible core functionality. Android Developers says background access should be critical to core functionality, offer a clear user benefit, and be obvious to the user. Also check location use in libraries and SDKs: the platform attributes their location access to the app. Review Android’s background access guidance and background permission instructions.

Quick Recap

Audit the design before release

  • Does every location request have a user-facing purpose and a definite stop condition?
  • Does the feature work with approximate location wherever precision is not essential?
  • Is high accuracy limited to a visible real-time task?
  • Can delayed batching, passive updates, or geofencing replace continuous polling?
  • Does a continuing session use a persistent-notification foreground service and the required location service type?
  • Are background access and its benefit explained, with a useful fallback if permission is declined?
  • Do libraries and SDKs request location, and are their callbacks and downstream work appropriately limited?
