Google Sites lets you create and publish a basic website from a computer without purchasing a separate website-builder subscription. Start with a blank site or template, add pages and content, preview the result, then publish it with a web address and a chosen audience. Your work is saved automatically, but a draft is not public until you publish it.

This guide follows Google’s current documented workflow and explains the account limits, publishing decisions, maintenance steps, and practical checks that matter when you are getting online for the first time.

What a free Google website is—and what it is not

Google Sites is a hosted site-creation tool in Google’s productivity ecosystem. You edit pages in a browser, and the finished site is stored with your Google account. Google’s official getting-started instructions describe creating a blank site or choosing a template, adding content, previewing the result, and publishing it from a computer. The basic workflow does not require buying a separate website-builder subscription.

“Sites automatically saves every change you make, but your site isn’t public until you publish it,” says the Google Workspace Learning Center. That distinction is important: closing the editor does not make a draft available to visitors, and publishing later changes is a separate action.

A Google Site is a practical fit for a simple information site, project hub, event page, club or classroom resource, internal team page, or personal information page. It is not presented in the official material as a full content-management, online-store, or advanced web-development platform. If your plan depends on a particular e-commerce system, database, plug-in ecosystem, or highly customized code, verify those requirements separately before committing to this workflow.

What you need before you begin

Use a computer for the documented setup

Google’s getting-started procedure is written for a computer. Open Google Sites in a desktop browser and plan to perform the initial creation, page organization, preview, and publishing there. The material available here does not establish that every editing task is available on every phone or tablet, so do not assume a mobile-only workflow.

Check which Google account you are using

Account type can determine whether you can create a site:

  • Parent-managed Google Accounts cannot use Google Sites, although they can see and edit existing sites.
  • Work or school accounts may have administrator rules that limit who can share or edit a site.
  • A personal account or an organization account with the necessary permissions should be checked before you spend time building pages.

Google documents these account and sharing constraints in its Google Sites Help overview and the Workspace Learning Center’s first-site instructions. If a menu is missing, an administrator policy or account type may be the cause rather than an editing error.

Prepare the information visitors must find

Write down the site’s purpose, the audience, and the handful of pages needed to answer visitors’ questions. A short outline prevents a common beginner problem: placing every detail on one long page and leaving visitors without a clear path to the information they need. You can add or reorder pages later, but deciding the main sections first makes navigation easier to test.

Step 1: Start a site and name it clearly

  1. On your computer, open Google Sites.
  2. Choose a blank site or select a template.
  3. Give the site document a working name so you can recognize it in Drive.
  4. Enter a visible site title in the site header.

The document is stored in Google Drive, and edits are saved automatically. The visible title is not merely an internal file label: Google’s Learning Center notes that it appears in the published header and in the browser or mobile-window title bar when the site has at least two pages. Use a concise title that tells visitors what the site is about rather than an internal project code.

At this stage you have a draft. Do not send the address to visitors yet; it will not be publicly available until the publishing step.

Step 2: Build a page structure visitors can follow

Add the main pages

Open the Pages panel and add a page for each major section of your outline. Typical sections might include an overview, instructions, contact information, resources, or an event schedule. Give each page a descriptive name so the navigation itself explains the site.

Arrange pages in a useful order

Place the most important destination where visitors will encounter it first, then order supporting pages in the sequence people are likely to need them. Reordering pages changes the navigation structure; it does not delete the content on those pages.

Nest related pages as subpages

When several pages belong to one subject, place them beneath a parent page as subpages. Google’s Learning Center says subpages can be nested up to five levels. Keep the hierarchy shallower when possible: visitors should not have to open several layers of menus to reach routine information. Use nesting for genuine relationships, not simply to hide pages.

After arranging the pages, click through the navigation as a visitor would. Look for duplicate names, pages that are difficult to reach, and a parent page that has no useful overview of its own.

Step 3: Add text, images, links, and page sections

Google Sites provides editing controls for text, headings, images, section layouts, buttons, and links. Google’s instructions for these elements are collected in Add or edit text & images.

Write scannable page content

  • Use one clear heading to identify the page’s purpose.
  • Break procedures and explanations into short sections rather than a single uninterrupted block.
  • Use descriptive link text that tells readers where a link goes.
  • Put the most important action or answer near the top of the page.

Headings are especially useful on long pages because they help visitors locate a section without reading every paragraph. Keep labels consistent across pages; changing “Contact,” “Get in touch,” and “Reach us” for the same destination can make a small site feel disorganized.

Add images with meaningful alternative text

Insert an image only when it helps explain, identify, or support the page. Add meaningful alt text describing the image’s purpose or information. If an image is purely decorative, do not make visitors using assistive technology work through a description that adds no information. Check that text remains readable against the image and that the image does not replace an essential instruction that should also be written on the page.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Use layouts, buttons, and links deliberately

Section layouts can separate related content and make a page easier to scan. Buttons are useful for a primary action, such as opening registration instructions or a key resource. Ordinary text links work well for secondary references. Before publishing, activate every button and link in preview so a typo does not send visitors to a dead destination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Preview the site before anyone sees it

Google recommends previewing your site before publication. Use the preview control in the editor to inspect how the pages appear in different display layouts. Check the site at the widths available in the preview rather than judging only the editing canvas.

Use this pass to verify:

  • Every page is present in the intended order.
  • Navigation labels are understandable without extra explanation.
  • Headings, paragraphs, lists, and images are aligned and readable.
  • Images have useful alt text.
  • Buttons and links open the intended destinations.
  • Long pages do not bury the main action or answer.
  • The title and header identify the site clearly.

Preview is not the same as publishing. It shows a rendering for checking; visitors still cannot access the site until you complete the Publish action.

Step 5: Publish the site and choose who can see it

  1. Click Publish in the editor.
  2. Enter the web address requested by Google Sites.
  3. Review the audience or visibility choice shown in the publishing dialog.
  4. Publish the site.
  5. Open the resulting address in a separate browser tab and test it as a visitor.

Google’s publishing instructions explain that the creator decides who can see the site. Choose the audience that matches the material: a broadly accessible site for information intended for the public, or a restricted audience for content that should remain within an organization or invited group. The exact choices available can depend on the account and administrator policy.

Testing the published address matters because it confirms more than the editor view. Check that the address resolves, the home page loads, navigation reaches each page, images appear, and links work. If someone outside your account is supposed to view the site, test from a context that is not already signed in with your editor account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 6: Publish again whenever you change the live site

Google Sites continues to save your edits automatically as a draft, but saved edits do not by themselves update the public version. After changing text, images, page order, links, or visibility, use Publish again. Google’s editing help repeats this publish step after edits.

Adopt a small release routine:

  1. Make and review the edits in the editor.
  2. Preview the affected pages.
  3. Publish the changes.
  4. Open the live address and check the changed content.

This routine prevents a frequent source of confusion: the editor shows the new wording while visitors continue to see the previous published version.

Practical ways to organize a first site

A simple information site

Use an overview page to explain who the site is for and what visitors can do next. Put detailed instructions, supporting resources, and contact information on separate pages. Link between pages when a reader needs context, but keep the main navigation limited to the sections visitors will use most often.

An event or project site

Lead with the date, purpose, location or access details, and the primary action. Put background material and supporting documents on secondary pages. When information changes, update the page and republish rather than creating a new page for every small revision.

Common problems and how to resolve them

The site is saved, but visitors cannot open it

Saving is not publication. Return to the editor, click Publish, complete the web-address and visibility choices, and then test the published address. If you already published, verify that the person testing it is included in the audience you selected.

A visitor sees an older version

Your latest edits may still be only in the draft. Publish again after the change, then reload the live address. If the editor and live page still differ, confirm that you published the same site document whose address you are testing.

You cannot create a site with this account

Check whether the account is parent-managed, because Google says those accounts cannot use Sites. For a work or school account, ask the administrator whether Sites or external sharing is restricted. Switching to an account that is permitted to create sites may be necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A page is difficult to find

Review the Pages panel and navigation order. Rename vague labels, move high-priority pages earlier, or nest related pages under a clear parent. Remember that subpages can be nested up to five levels; a flatter structure is usually easier for visitors to understand.

An image does not help everyone understand the page

Add or revise alt text so the image’s purpose is conveyed in words. If the image carries essential information, repeat that information in nearby text instead of relying on the picture alone.

Custom domains, analytics, accessibility, and export

Google’s Sites Help index includes topics for custom domains, analytics, accessibility, and data export. Those topics confirm that Google provides help areas for these capabilities, but the material used for this guide does not establish the exact connection steps, registrar requirements, eligibility rules, fees, analytics setup, or export format.

Do not assume that a custom domain is included at no cost. If a branded address is important, consult Google’s current custom-domain documentation and the terms of the domain registrar you intend to use before making a budget or launch promise. Likewise, treat analytics, accessibility, and export as separate setup tasks and verify their current instructions in the official Sites Help index.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Google Sites is a sensible choice

Choose this workflow when you want a straightforward site, already use a Google account, and value quick editing and automatic saving over extensive technical customization. It is especially useful when the site consists mainly of pages, text, images, links, and a small navigation hierarchy.

Consider a different platform only after listing a requirement Google Sites does not clearly satisfy, such as a particular store system, advanced data-backed functionality, specialized integrations, or a level of design control beyond the available editor. Do not choose on the promise of a custom domain alone until you have confirmed the domain process and costs for your account.

Launch checklist

  • You created the site from a computer with an account allowed to use Google Sites.
  • The document name and visible site title are clear.
  • Pages are in a logical order, with related pages nested only where useful.
  • Text is divided into headings and readable sections.
  • Images have meaningful alt text.
  • Buttons and links have been tested.
  • You previewed the site in the available display layouts.
  • You entered a web address and selected an audience deliberately.
  • You opened the published address outside the editor and checked each important page.
  • You know that every later edit requires another publication.

Bottom line: publish a useful first version, then improve it

Creating a free Google website is a short sequence: start a site on a computer, add and organize pages, insert accessible content, preview it, publish it with a web address and visibility setting, and republish whenever you make changes. The tool’s automatic saving protects your draft, but only publication makes that draft available to visitors. Check account restrictions early, keep the page structure simple, and test the live address rather than relying on the editor view.
