To build and power a conduit, craft it from one Heart of the Sea and eight nautilus shells, place it in the center of a water-filled 3×3×3 space, and surround it with a frame made from qualifying prismarine-family blocks or sea lanterns. A frame of at least 16 full blocks activates the conduit; the complete 42-block, three-ring frame gives the maximum 96-block spherical range.
What a conduit does and what “powered” means
A conduit is an underwater utility block whose operation depends on its surroundings rather than on redstone, fuel, or a separate power item. It becomes active when the conduit itself is surrounded by water and a valid prismarine-family frame or sea-lantern frame is built around it. The frame determines the radius of the conduit’s effect.
Powering is therefore a placement check: the game looks for water in the required central volume and counts qualifying full blocks in the surrounding frame. If either condition fails, adding more blocks elsewhere will not help. The conduit can be activated in any biome and at any height or depth, provided the water and frame requirements are met.

The official recipe uses exactly one Heart of the Sea surrounded by eight nautilus shells. The recipe produces one conduit.

Frame materials
Every block that counts toward activation must be a full block of one of these types:
- Prismarine
- Dark prismarine
- Prismarine bricks
- Sea lanterns
You can mix these four materials in the same frame. A frame made entirely from prismarine can be replaced block-for-block with dark prismarine, prismarine bricks, sea lanterns, or any combination of them. Slabs, stairs, walls, and other partial variants do not count as frame blocks.

The Heart of the Sea is obtained from buried treasure. Nautilus shells can come from drowned, wandering traders, or fishing treasure. Prismarine and related ocean-building materials are associated with ocean monuments and ocean ruins. An ocean monument can also provide enough suitable material for a 16-block starter frame; harvesting or transporting those blocks is often easier than collecting every component for a decorative full frame at once.
Craft the conduit
- Collect one Heart of the Sea and eight nautilus shells.
- Open a crafting table.
- Put the Heart of the Sea in the center slot.
- Fill all eight surrounding slots with nautilus shells.
- Move the resulting conduit into your inventory.
The conduit is now crafted but not yet powered. It does not need to be placed in a particular biome, ocean, or depth. Your next task is to prepare a water-filled center and construct the frame.

Choose and prepare the location
Any biome and any elevation can work
A conduit is not restricted to an ocean biome. You can build it in an ocean, a river, an underground chamber, a flooded base, or an artificial pool. Surface height and depth do not determine whether it activates. The water and frame geometry do.
Make the central 3×3×3 volume water-filled
Place the conduit at the center of a 3×3×3 volume. The surrounding positions must be occupied by water in a form accepted by the game’s conduit mechanics. Water source blocks, flowing water, and permitted waterlogged blocks can satisfy the surrounding positions. The conduit occupies the center position; the other positions in that central volume must not be left dry.
For a reliable build, make the entire 3×3×3 area into a stable water pocket before placing the frame. If you are building in open ocean water, verify that no part of the central volume has been replaced by air. In a room, fill the space deliberately and inspect all sides, including the blocks above and below the conduit.
Build the activation frame
The minimum 16-block ring
The simplest activating structure is a 5×5 open square ring centered on the conduit. Build the ring from 16 qualifying full blocks, leaving its interior open. The conduit remains at the center of the ring rather than being embedded in one of its blocks. This minimum ring activates the conduit and provides a 32-block spherical range.

Think of the ring as the outline of a square, not a solid 5×5 wall. Filling the entire square would use unnecessary material and would not follow the standard conduit frame layout.
Adding the perpendicular rings
The maximum structure consists of three mutually perpendicular 5×5 open-square rings: one horizontal ring and two vertical rings crossing through the conduit’s center. The rings share positions where they intersect, so the completed structure contains 42 unique qualifying blocks rather than 48. The conduit stays in the middle of the three-dimensional frame, with the surrounding central volume kept water-filled.
- Build the first 5×5 open square around the conduit. Confirm that its outline contains 16 full qualifying blocks.
- Add a second 5×5 open square at a right angle to the first.
- Add the third 5×5 open square perpendicular to both of the others.
- Check that every frame position uses a full prismarine, dark-prismarine, prismarine-brick, or sea-lantern block.
- Keep the conduit and its required water volume centered inside the completed structure.
You can stop after the first ring, add one or two additional rings, or finish all three. The frame does not need to be made from a single material.
Conduit range by frame size
Range is measured as a spherical radius from the conduit, not as the side length of a square room. Corners of a rectangular build therefore fall outside the effect sooner than points directly along an axis at the same nominal distance.

The documented progression is 32, 48, 64, 80, and 96 blocks. Adding valid blocks increases the conduit through those range stages; simply placing decorative blocks outside the frame does not. The complete 42-block frame is required for the 96-block maximum.
How to build a conduit step by step
- Craft the conduit. Use one Heart of the Sea and eight nautilus shells at a crafting table.
- Mark the center. Choose the exact block where the conduit will sit and leave room for a 3×3×3 water-filled volume around it.
- Fill the water volume. Ensure the surrounding positions are water source blocks, flowing water, or accepted waterlogged blocks rather than air.
- Place the conduit. Put it at the center of the prepared volume.
- Build the first ring. Construct a 5×5 open-square outline around the conduit using 16 full qualifying blocks.
- Check activation. If the water volume and ring are correct, the minimum frame activates the conduit and establishes the 32-block range.
- Expand if needed. Add the second and third perpendicular rings to move through the larger range stages.
- Finish the maximum frame. Complete all three rings for 42 unique blocks and a 96-block range.
Why a conduit may not activate
The center is not fully surrounded by water
This is the first check because a dry pocket prevents activation even when the frame looks correct. Inspect all 26 positions surrounding the conduit inside the 3×3×3 volume. Replace air and unintended solid blocks with water in an accepted form. In an open-water build, check for cavities created by terrain, doors, signs, or temporary scaffolding.
The frame has too few qualifying blocks
Count only full blocks that are prismarine, dark prismarine, prismarine bricks, or sea lanterns. The activation minimum is 16. A visually large build can still fall below that number if it uses an incomplete outline or decorative gaps.
Partial blocks were used
Slabs, stairs, and walls do not count as qualifying frame blocks. Replace them with full blocks. This is a common reason a decorative frame appears complete but fails the conduit’s block check.

The ring is not in the conduit’s frame positions
Blocks placed near the conduit are not automatically counted. Rebuild the structure as the centered 5×5 open-square ring, then add the two perpendicular rings for expansion. Avoid shifting a ring sideways or placing a solid wall where the open-square outline should be.
Extra blocks were placed outside the frame
Only blocks occupying valid frame positions contribute to activation and range. A pile of prismarine nearby, even if it contains more than 16 blocks, cannot substitute for the centered ring geometry.
Planning a frame for your build

A minimal frame is usually the most efficient first step because it activates the conduit with the fewest blocks. Expansion is modular: you can leave the conduit operating while you gather more prismarine-family blocks, then add the remaining rings around the same center.
The full-frame hostile-mob effect
The complete 42-block frame adds a defensive effect that the minimum ring does not provide: hostile mobs within 8 blocks can be damaged when those mobs are in contact with water or rain. The distance is measured from the conduit, and the water-or-rain condition matters. A hostile mob standing on dry land inside the broader 96-block conduit range does not meet that condition merely because the conduit is nearby.
For a practical defense, place the complete frame where hostile mobs are likely to enter water, such as a flooded perimeter, channel, or underwater approach. The conduit’s 96-block range and its 8-block damage radius are different measurements; do not treat the damage zone as if it covered the entire range.

- No slabs, stairs, or walls counted toward the frame.
- Additional rings aligned perpendicular to the first when expanding.
