Yes, you can build a WordPress-backed website with Lovable in 2026, but Lovable does not replace WordPress as your content-management system. The practical architecture is headless: Lovable generates the React/TypeScript front end and workflows, while WordPress stores and manages posts, pages, media, users, taxonomies, and custom post types. Lovable connects to those records through the WordPress REST API, then you publish the front end on Lovable Cloud or deploy it through GitHub to another hosting platform.
This separation gives editors the familiar WordPress dashboard and gives developers an AI-assisted interface builder. It also means you must configure WordPress hosting, HTTPS, permissions, permalinks, DNS, and operational security yourself when you use a self-hosted installation.

What Lovable and WordPress each do
Lovable is best treated as the application layer. You describe pages, components, forms, dashboards, listing views, and editorial workflows in chat, and Lovable produces a React/TypeScript application. WordPress remains the system of record for content and user data.
WordPress remains the content system
- Editors create and update posts and pages in the WordPress dashboard.
- Media files, categories, tags, users, and custom post types remain in WordPress.
- WordPress hosting, plugins, SSL configuration, permalink settings, backups, and server operations remain your responsibility for a self-hosted site.
Lovable renders the public experience
The Lovable app requests WordPress data through REST endpoints and turns it into the site visitors use. You can build marketing pages, blogs, help centers, media browsers, directory or listing pages, event pages, dashboards, and forms that create draft posts. The editor can continue using WordPress without learning the front-end codebase.

What this is not
Lovable does not convert a WordPress theme into a finished Lovable project, and the connector does not give Lovable unrestricted control over your server. It cannot change WordPress roles, configure hosting or SSL, bypass the connected account’s permissions, or provide a separate WordPress login for every end user.
Choose your WordPress connection first
There are two different connection paths. Decide which one hosts your content before creating credentials; credentials for one path are not interchangeable with the other.

The self-hosted connector is an app-and-chat connector: one shared connection is available while you build in project chat and in the published app. A WordPress.com connection follows a separate account-and-scope model. Do not paste a self-hosted Application Password into the WordPress.com connector or expect WordPress.com credentials to authenticate against your own server.
Prepare self-hosted WordPress
Complete these checks before opening Lovable’s connector. They prevent most authentication and data-loading failures.
Meet the WordPress and transport requirements
- Run WordPress 5.6 or newer.
- Serve the site over HTTPS with a valid certificate.
- Use non-plain permalinks, such as a post-name structure, so the REST routes are available in a predictable form.
- Confirm that your host, firewall, security plugin, or reverse proxy does not block REST API requests.
Open your site’s REST discovery response in a browser or API client and confirm it returns JSON rather than a login page, redirect loop, or firewall error. If your site is installed in a subdirectory, use the complete installation address when Lovable asks for the site URL.

Create a narrowly scoped WordPress user
Create a dedicated account for the Lovable connection rather than using the administrator account you use every day. Give it only the capabilities required by the app. A read-only editorial front end may need to read posts, pages, media, categories, tags, and selected custom post types. A dashboard that creates draft posts needs the ability to create drafts but does not necessarily need publishing, user administration, plugin management, or site settings.

In the dedicated user’s WordPress profile, create an Application Password and copy it immediately. WordPress displays the generated value only once. Treat it like a normal password: keep it in a password manager, do not commit it to GitHub, and never place it in browser-visible React code.
Connect Lovable to self-hosted WordPress
- In Lovable, open Connectors.
- Choose the connector for WordPress (self-hosted), not the WordPress.com option.
- Enter the complete WordPress site URL or the REST discovery URL requested by the connector.
- Enter the dedicated WordPress username.
- Paste the Application Password exactly as WordPress generated it.
- Start the connection. Lovable verifies the credentials against the WordPress REST API.
- After authentication succeeds, ask Lovable to load the specific content types the application needs: posts, pages, media, categories, tags, users, and any named custom post types.
Be explicit about the data contract in your prompt. State which fields to display, how images should be selected, whether content is public or draft-only, and which actions are allowed. Also request loading, empty, error, and permission-denied states instead of allowing the interface to fail silently.
A useful first prompt
Ask Lovable to build a read-only page that fetches published posts, displays the title, featured image, excerpt, author, date, and category, and shows a clear loading indicator, an empty-state message, and an actionable error state. Once that works, add search, pagination, detail pages, or editorial actions one at a time. This isolates connector problems from front-end complexity.
Custom post types and taxonomies
Custom post types must be exposed through the REST API before Lovable can read them. Ask the WordPress administrator or plugin developer to verify that the post type has REST support and that its route is available to the connected user. Use the exact post-type and taxonomy names in your Lovable prompt; a friendly label in the dashboard may not be the API identifier.

Design the headless content workflow
Keep editing in WordPress
Define WordPress as the canonical location for editorial content. Editors can continue scheduling posts, assigning categories and tags, uploading media, and managing authors in the dashboard. Lovable should read those records and present them consistently rather than creating a second, conflicting database.
Handle drafts and permissions deliberately
Published content can normally be displayed to public visitors, while drafts require an authenticated WordPress request and suitable capabilities. If your app includes a form that creates draft posts, specify the allowed fields and enforce server-side permission checks. Never rely on a hidden button or client-side condition to protect an editorial action.
Plan media behavior
Decide whether the app uses the featured image, an image embedded in post content, or a separate media relationship. Include alt text and a fallback image strategy. A missing attachment should produce a usable card, not a broken image or a layout shift that hides the title.
Choose where to host the Lovable application
Lovable’s publishing guide says every project receives a lovable.app address, while custom domains are available on paid plans. You can stay on Lovable Cloud for the least setup, or export and deploy elsewhere when you need more control over builds, infrastructure, or development workflow.

GitHub plus an external platform
Lovable can sync or export a project through GitHub. You can then deploy it to Vercel, Netlify, Railway, or another host. These platforms are general-purpose deployment targets: the guide notes that they require GitHub and separately configured backend services. You are responsible for environment variables, build commands, preview and production branches, API access, and any server-side proxy needed to keep WordPress credentials private.
Customer-owned cloud
A deployment on AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, or comparable infrastructure gives the most control but also the most setup. Establish a repeatable build, secret storage, logging, monitoring, backups, access reviews, and a rollback process before calling it production-ready.

AWS private preview in 2026
Lovable announced “Deploy on AWS” on October 14, 2026. It is a private preview for selected Enterprise customers, and the announcement says some features available on Lovable hosting do not yet have full feature parity. Treat it as an availability-limited option rather than a generally available replacement for the other deployment paths.
Connect a custom domain, DNS, and SSL
- In Lovable, open Project → Settings → Domains.
- Add the domain or subdomain you want to use.
- Complete the ownership verification step Lovable displays.
- At your domain registrar or DNS provider, add the A and TXT records Lovable supplies, exactly as shown.
- Check for existing AAAA records. Lovable warns that an incompatible AAAA record can interfere with routing; remove or adjust it only when you understand what other service uses it.
- Wait for DNS propagation. Lovable documents a possible delay of up to 72 hours, although many changes complete sooner.
- After verification, select which connected domain is primary. Lovable supports root domains and subdomains.
Lovable automatically generates and installs the SSL certificate for a connected domain. Do not point the domain at the new app until you have recorded any existing mail, API, or other service records that must remain in DNS.

Once the domain resolves to the published app, run Lovable’s SEO review. Check that every important page has a unique title, description, canonical behavior, semantic headings, useful image alt text, and a crawlable link path. Then verify the domain in Google Search Console and submit the sitemap.

- Open the root domain and the
wwwor chosen subdomain variant, if applicable, and confirm the intended redirect or canonical behavior. - Test a WordPress post, page, media asset, category, tag, and each custom content route used by the app.
- Check mobile layouts, keyboard navigation, form validation, and visible error messages.
- Confirm that unpublished WordPress content is not exposed to anonymous visitors.
- Record the production domain, deployment project, WordPress connection owner, and recovery contacts.
Security rules that matter in production
Protect the Application Password
The Application Password must stay on a trusted server-side path. A public client can reveal its JavaScript, network requests, and embedded configuration to every visitor. If the architecture requires privileged WordPress operations, put them behind a server-side function or backend that stores the secret in an environment variable and enforces authorization.

Use least privilege and separate environments
Create separate staging and production WordPress connections and accounts. Give staging credentials access to staging content only. Review the connected user’s capabilities whenever the app’s feature set changes, and remove unused capabilities rather than leaving a permanently broad role.
Rotate credentials safely
When a credential may have been exposed or an employee leaves, create a new Application Password in WordPress, update the trusted deployment environment, test the connection, and revoke the old password. Because WordPress shows a generated Application Password only once, keep the new value in a managed secret store before closing the profile screen.
Remember what the connector cannot do
- It cannot change WordPress roles.
- It cannot configure your WordPress host or SSL.
- It cannot bypass the permissions of the connected user.
- It does not provide a per-end-user WordPress login model.
WooCommerce requires its own integration
If the project handles products, orders, or customers, use the WooCommerce connector. Do not assume generic WordPress REST routes provide the commerce operations, permissions, or data model those workflows require.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
Lovable rejects the credentials
- Confirm you selected the connector matching the site type.
- Regenerate the Application Password if it was copied incompletely; WordPress does not display the original value again.
- Check that the username belongs to the account that generated the password.
- Verify HTTPS and make sure the REST endpoint returns JSON without a login redirect.
- Check that a firewall, security plugin, maintenance mode, or proxy is not blocking REST requests.
The connection succeeds but no posts appear
- Confirm the app is requesting the correct post status, usually published for a public page.
- Check that the connected user can read the requested content.
- Verify the post type is exposed to REST and that the app uses its API name, not only its dashboard label.
- Inspect category, tag, and media relationships rather than assuming every field is embedded in the first response.
Images or custom fields are missing
Ask Lovable to inspect the actual REST response and map the returned field names explicitly. Featured images may require a media lookup, and custom fields may not be present unless the WordPress extension exposes them through REST. Add a fallback when an attachment or optional field is absent.
The custom domain does not route
- Recheck the A and TXT records against Lovable’s current values.
- Look for a conflicting AAAA record.
- Allow for DNS caching and the documented propagation window of up to 72 hours.
- Make sure the domain is attached to the intended Lovable project and marked primary only after verification.
Users see a permission error
Distinguish an application authorization failure from a WordPress capability failure. A public page should request only public data. An editorial action should be sent through a protected server-side path and tested with the exact WordPress role assigned to the connector account.

The right choice is determined less by the visual design and more by who owns deployments, where secrets live, how editors work, and who is responsible when DNS, WordPress, or the application fails. Lovable can accelerate the interface and workflow build, but it does not remove those operational decisions.
What is and is not established about cost and performance
The available official material establishes that custom domains are a paid-plan feature and that Lovable provides a lovable.app URL for every project. It does not publish an independent benchmark for traffic capacity, page speed, adoption, or total hosting cost for a Lovable-plus-WordPress architecture. Treat performance and budget as deployment-specific questions: measure your own pages, API latency, media delivery, caching, and traffic profile before choosing infrastructure.
