The set you want is LEGO Ideas La Catrina 21372. It contains 1,212 pieces and LEGO lists the completed figure at over 17 inches (43 cm) tall. The official product page provides the building instructions, while the LEGO Builder app adds 3D viewing, zoom, rotation, set saving and progress tracking. Once built, you can place the figure on a desk or shelf, adjust its head and arms, and choose whether the second monarch butterfly rests in its hand or on the base.
This is a contemporary brick-built interpretation of La Catrina, not a historical reconstruction or a universal Día de Muertos altar. The display can acknowledge the figure’s Mexican artistic history while leaving room for the different practices of families and communities.

Get the official building instructions
LEGO supplies the authoritative instructions through the product page and its Builder app. Use the printed or digital format that lets you see small colors and connection points most clearly.
- Open the LEGO product page for model 21372.
- Find the Building Instructions resource on that page and open the instructions for La Catrina.
- For an interactive view, open the LEGO Builder app and search for set 21372.
- Use the app’s 3D controls to zoom in, rotate the model and inspect a connection from another angle.
- Save the set in the app if you want to return to it later, and use its progress-tracking feature to record completed instruction pages.
The app’s 3D view is useful when a flat illustration makes orientation ambiguous: rotate the virtual model rather than guessing which side of a brick faces forward. The official materials do not establish a required construction time or a fixed number of building stages, so plan your session around your own pace.
Prepare for a 1,212-piece adult build
Before opening bags, reserve a clean, well-lit work area large enough to keep several loose elements visible. The finished figure is listed at 43 cm tall, so think about its eventual vertical clearance before you start as well as the temporary space needed while sorting pieces.
- Keep the instruction pages or Builder screen at an angle that does not cast a shadow over the parts.
- Separate loose pieces by the bag or instruction sequence you are following; do not combine everything if that would make visual matching harder.
- Use a shallow tray or clean containers for tiny elements so they cannot roll away.
- Keep the printed and decorative pieces away from food, drinks and other surfaces that could scratch them.
- When pausing, leave the partially built model on a flat, protected surface and note your instruction-page position.
These are organization practices, not LEGO-certified requirements. The manufacturer’s documented facts are the 1,212-piece count, adult positioning and the digital instruction features; there is no published independent test establishing a specific build duration, difficulty rating or stability result.
What the completed model includes
LEGO describes an elegantly dressed skeleton figure with a deliberately decorative finish. Its visual features include:

LEGO’s product copy includes the line, “Even in death, La Catrina smiles.” That is marketing language from the LEGO product page, not a quotation from a historian or a description of every La Catrina tradition.
Build first, then choose a pose
Once the instructions are complete, make display decisions one at a time. The documented articulation is in the head and arms, and the documented butterfly choice is between the hand and the base.
Recommended Free Tools
Forward-facing pose
Leave the head facing the front and keep the arms in the arrangement shown by the instructions. This is the most direct way to present the hat, face and dress decorations to someone approaching the display.
Turned-head pose
Rotate the head slightly to one side if you want the figure to look toward a doorway, neighboring shelf object or another focal point. Recheck the available clearance before settling on the angle; LEGO publishes the height but not a required shelf depth or turning radius.
Butterfly-in-hand pose
Place the second monarch butterfly in the figure’s hand. This makes the handheld detail part of the first thing a viewer sees, especially when the model is displayed at eye level.

Butterflies on the base
Keep the butterfly on the base if you prefer an uncluttered silhouette around the hands or if the display location makes a handheld detail difficult to see. The choice is a documented design option, not a ranking of one pose over another.

Choose a desk or shelf with the height in mind
LEGO says the model can be displayed on a desk or shelf and promoted it as room decor that can remain on display all year. The key measurable constraint is vertical: the figure is over 17 inches (43 cm) tall. Measure the open space from the supporting surface to the underside of the shelf, cabinet or ceiling above it before committing to a location.
- Desk: A desk puts the figure at close viewing distance and makes the head, printed skulls and handheld butterfly easy to inspect. Keep the model outside the area where a monitor arm, lamp or daily paperwork could strike it.
- Open shelf: An open shelf can frame the complete hat and marigold silhouette. Check the 43 cm height against the shelf opening rather than relying on a visual estimate.
- Seasonal display: A temporary Día de Muertos arrangement can give the model a central position while it is in use, then return it to ordinary room decor afterward.
- Year-round room decor: LEGO explicitly presents year-round display as an option. You do not need to limit the model to a holiday period.
No shelf-depth measurement, load rating, lighting requirement or independent stability test is published for this set. Do not treat an unverified furniture dimension as a LEGO specification. Use a level surface, avoid an edge where a casual bump could send pieces down, and follow the furniture maker’s own limits.
Understand La Catrina’s history before styling the display
La Catrina is not synonymous with every Día de Muertos practice. The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) traces the recognizable image to José Guadalupe Posada’s satirical print Calavera Garbancera. The figure was later called La Catrina, and Diego Rivera depicted her in elegant clothing in a mural. The familiar image therefore developed through reinterpretation rather than appearing as one unchanged, ancient design.
INAH’s account is available in “La Catrina, un ícono de Día de Muertos.” Use that history to describe the LEGO model accurately: it is a contemporary brick-built depiction of a figure whose public image has changed over time, not an exact replica of Posada’s print or Rivera’s mural.

The model’s marigolds, sugar-skull prints and monarch butterflies are LEGO’s design choices. They can evoke visual elements many people associate with Día de Muertos, but the set does not define the observance or prescribe how a family should remember someone.
Build a respectful Día de Muertos display around the model
If you place La Catrina beside other objects, describe those objects as examples from a particular household, community or museum presentation rather than as universal requirements. INAH material about an altar display identifies flowers, papel picado, sugar skulls, pan de muerto and dishes associated with the deceased among the elements used in that representation. Those examples do not form a mandatory checklist for every family or region.
INAH’s historical explainer, “El origen del Día de Muertos,” emphasizes the observance’s complex history. That makes precise language important: say that an arrangement is inspired by or includes recognizable visual elements, not that one color scheme, date, altar layout or set of offerings is the only authentic form.
Acknowledge the difference between decoration and remembrance
A LEGO figure can be a seasonal decoration, a conversation piece or part of a personal remembrance display. If your arrangement includes photographs, food or objects connected to a deceased person, give those items the attention and care your family considers appropriate. The LEGO model should not be presented as a replacement for community-specific ceremonies, family practices or the people being remembered.

Use context cards or labels carefully
If the model is shown in a classroom, office or public room, a short label can state: “LEGO Ideas La Catrina 21372, a contemporary brick-built interpretation of the La Catrina figure.” You can add that the image’s history includes Posada’s Calavera Garbancera and Rivera’s later elegant depiction, with a link to the INAH account. Avoid labeling the LEGO design as an artifact from Posada’s era or as a complete representation of Día de Muertos.

Plan a display that viewers can actually read
Place the figure so its strongest documented details face the normal approach path: the hat, printed sugar skulls, marigolds, face and butterfly. Then check the pose from seated and standing eye levels. A head turn that looks expressive from one direction may hide the printed dress decoration from another, so choose the viewing angle that matches the room.
- Measure at least 43 cm of clear vertical space, allowing for the “over 17 inches” wording on LEGO’s specification.
- Set the base on the chosen desk or shelf and confirm that no door, drawer or monitor movement intersects the display area.
- Choose forward-facing or turned-head orientation based on the main approach path.
- Set the arms in the position that leaves the face and torso details visible.
- Place the second butterfly in the hand or on the base, then view the model from the room’s usual angles.
- Keep any seasonal paper, flowers or food arranged around rather than pressed against the brick-built base and figure.
These steps help you make a visual choice without claiming that one arrangement is structurally superior. The manufacturer documents poseability and placement options; it does not publish a tested “best” configuration.
Seasonal and year-round care choices
For a seasonal display, decide in advance where the model will go during the rest of the year. LEGO’s own description supports keeping it on a desk or shelf as room decor all year, so storage between Día de Muertos periods is optional rather than required.
- When moving the model, support the base instead of lifting it by the hat, arms or butterfly.
- Keep the instruction link or saved Builder entry available if a piece is accidentally displaced during a move.
- Protect printed elements from abrasive cleaning materials; clean the surrounding furniture according to its manufacturer’s guidance.
- Before reinstalling seasonal items, check that no loose paper, flower stem or cord is resting on a poseable arm or butterfly.
These handling suggestions are commonsense display precautions, not results from an independent durability test. LEGO’s published information does not specify a cleaning method, UV tolerance or long-term color-retention measurement.
Use the source material without flattening the tradition
For historical background, consult INAH’s two relevant pages: the explanation of La Catrina’s iconography and the history of Día de Muertos. INAH also describes altar elements in its museum account, “El Museo Nacional de las Intervenciones conmemora el ‘Día de Muertos con Playmobil’.”
Those institutional sources support historical framing and examples from specific displays. They do not establish that every household uses the same objects, dates, colors or rituals. Pairing that qualification with the LEGO product facts keeps the display informative without turning a commercial model into a cultural authority.
Quick completion and display checklist
- Confirm the box or product page says LEGO Ideas La Catrina 21372.
- Verify that you have the 1,212-piece adult building kit and the correct instruction resource.
- Use the LEGO Builder app if you want 3D rotation, zoom, saved sets or progress tracking.
- Reserve more than 43 cm of vertical clearance for the completed figure.
- Check the brick-built marigolds, printed sugar skulls, flowered base and both monarch butterflies as you finish.
- Choose the head, arm and second-butterfly positions deliberately.
- Place the model on a desk, shelf or seasonal display area that suits the room’s viewing path.
- If adding Día de Muertos objects, identify them as examples from a particular tradition or display, not universal rules.
- Describe the LEGO figure as a contemporary interpretation connected to La Catrina’s changing visual history.
What this set can—and cannot—represent
As a build, LEGO Ideas La Catrina offers a defined object: 1,212 pieces assembled into a 43 cm-tall, poseable skeleton with flowers, printed skull motifs and butterflies. As a display, it can mark a season, decorate a room or prompt discussion of Posada, Rivera and the continuing reinterpretation of La Catrina.
It cannot stand in for the full diversity of Día de Muertos, establish one correct altar, or serve as evidence that all families observe the holiday in the same way. Keeping those boundaries visible lets the model work as attractive decor while treating the cultural subject with accuracy and respect.
