Build an AI-era SEO content roadmap by starting with a business goal, finding relevant search opportunities, checking the live results page, clustering related queries into destination pages, prioritizing by value and intent, and briefing each page for both readers and search visibility. The six-step workflow below is Corey Morris’s agency approach, published by Search Engine Journal on October 2, 2026—not a universal formula or a guarantee of rankings or traffic.
1. Define the business outcome before researching keywords
Choose what the content program should accomplish: for example, qualified leads, ecommerce revenue, or another measurable business result. Then ask how each potential topic could contribute to that outcome. Search volume and the ability to publish quickly are not substitutes for business value.
This first decision gives the rest of the roadmap a filter. If a term attracts visitors who are unlikely to become customers or otherwise advance the organization’s goal, it may not deserve a place in the plan.
2. Build a keyword universe, then screen the content gap
Identify the searches your site could reasonably serve and compare your coverage with sites that compete for search visibility. In his example, Morris uses Ahrefs Content Gap with the site and two to four competitors; the interface can accept up to ten. Search competitors matter here: include sites that rank for relevant queries, not only companies named as business rivals by sales or product teams.

Review the pages ranking for candidate terms, examine difficulty, volume, and ranking ranges, and look for terms shared across competitors. Export relevant results for clustering. Treat this output as research input, not a publishing queue: remove branded searches, irrelevant topics, and queries that do not match the organization’s intent or audience.
Morris illustrates the trade-off with 3PL queries. In the October 2, 2026 article, he reports “3pl” at KD 47 and 29,000 monthly searches, versus “3pl fulfillment” at KD 11 and 2,600 searches and “3pl companies” at KD 18 and 5,000 searches. These are illustrative figures reported in that article, not current metrics; check a keyword tool before using numbers to make a present-day decision.

3. Inspect the actual search results, including AI Overviews
A keyword’s volume and difficulty do not show what a searcher sees. For each shortlisted query, inspect the results page and record whether Google displays an AI Overview, which other features appear, and which pages the Overview cites. Other features may include ads, People Also Ask, or a local pack. Morris describes using Ahrefs Keywords Explorer to find terms that trigger AI Overviews and Site Explorer’s Organic Keywords report to check whether a site’s pages appear in them; the workflow can be adapted to another SEO platform.
An AI Overview is not an automatic reason to abandon a topic. Decide whether the page’s opportunity is to earn a click, be cited in the Overview, or do both, and set expectations accordingly. A page can have strategic value even when the likely click opportunity differs from a conventional results page.

What the available CTR study does—and does not—say
Ahrefs’ February 4, 2026 update reports that AI Overview presence correlated with a 58% lower average clickthrough rate for the top-ranking page. Its analysis compared 150,000 keywords with an AI Overview against 150,000 informational keywords without one, using aggregated Google Search Console average desktop CTR data. It compared December 2023 with December 2025; for position one in the AI Overview group, reported CTR fell from 0.073 to 0.016. The estimated 58% difference is an observational, sample-level correlation, not a causal estimate or forecast for an individual site or query. Read Ahrefs’ study update.
4. Cluster queries into pages, not just spreadsheet rows
A keyword list is not yet a page plan. Group queries that can be served well by the same page, and separate those that call for different destinations. Morris describes using shared ranking pages—for example, Parent Topic clustering—or shared terms to help identify which searches belong together.

Organize the working sheet as Cluster > Group > Keyword, with difficulty, volume, intent, and SERP features recorded for each relevant term. Map every cluster to a destination such as a hub page, service page, or article. This creates a practical connection between the query research and the pages the team intends to build or improve.

5. Prioritize clusters by opportunity, not volume alone
First check whether a cluster supports the business outcome chosen in step one. Then compare the opportunities using the factors below. Search volume can help break a tie, but it should not be the first measure of value.

In Morris’s 3PL example, “3pl fulfillment” and “3pl companies” rank ahead of the broader “3pl” term because of their stronger intent, while an Amazon FBA prep cluster advances because its intent is closer to buying despite lower search volume. The examples illustrate the prioritization logic; they are not universal rankings for every business.
6. Turn each priority into a brief built for people and search
Give each selected cluster a brief that tells the writer what the page is for and what the results page demands. At minimum, include:
- The primary keyword and supporting terms.
- The searcher’s intent and stage in the decision process.
- Relevant SERP features, including whether an AI Overview appears and which pages it cites.
- The target destination page, such as a hub, service page, or article.
- The page’s angle and the business outcome it is intended to support.
In the finished content, answer the central question directly near the top of relevant sections, use headings that reflect real search questions, and support concise explanations with concrete expertise and named details. Use structured data where appropriate, and link supporting pages internally to the relevant hub. AI tools may help speed up work, but they do not replace human expertise, evidence, or editorial judgment.
Test one cluster before changing the whole program
Establish a baseline and apply the workflow to one cluster first. Compare its results with content produced under the previous approach before expanding the process across the operation. This makes the roadmap an approach to evaluate against your own objectives rather than a promised performance outcome.
