oxipass-tui is a Rust-based, terminal password manager inspired by KeePassXC. Its project README describes a vault stored as one encrypted local .opdb file, with no cloud or network dependency. You can build it from source, create a vault, and optionally pair it with a generated .opkey file. These are the project’s documented design claims, not independent security findings.

What oxipass-tui does

The project describes itself as “A terminal-based password manager inspired by KeePassXC, written in Rust.” Its documented entry types are Login, Payment, and Note. The interface also includes live search, secret reveal controls, multiline notes, and a configurable password generator.

The README says all data is stored in a single encrypted local file, with no cloud, network, system-keyring, or clipboard-daemon dependency. That makes the documented workflow local-first; the README does not describe a built-in synchronization service.

Build it and create a vault

The documented installation route is to compile the source with a Rust toolchain. The README does not establish an official prebuilt-binary distribution or a supported-platform matrix, so the following commands reflect the project’s documented workflow rather than a guarantee for every operating system.

Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
  1. Build the release binary from the project source with cargo build --release. The documented output is target/release/oxipass-tui.

  2. Create a vault by running oxipass-tui new ~/passwords. The project documents the vault suffix as .opdb, so this path creates ~/passwords.opdb.

  3. Open it with oxipass-tui open ~/passwords.opdb.

What the encrypted vault contains

According to the README, the plaintext data is JSON that is deflate-compressed before encryption. The project documents AES-256-GCM encryption and Argon2 key derivation. Its described vault format begins with a 16-byte salt and a 12-byte nonce, followed by ciphertext and a GCM tag.

Password Safe
  • Requires 3 "AAA" batteries (included)
  • Unit auto-locks for 30 minutes after 5 consecutive incorrect PINs

The README says a 32-byte key is derived from the master password, concatenated with keyfile bytes when a keyfile is used, through Argon2. It also says a wrong master password causes AES-GCM authentication to fail and that the vault is fully re-encrypted on every save. These details explain the implementation as documented; they do not establish that the implementation has been independently reviewed or that it is secure against a particular threat.

Using an optional .opkey file

A keyfile is an additional generated file used alongside the master password. The README says it contains 32 random bytes and uses the .opkey suffix. To generate and use one, the documented commands are:

  1. Generate the file: oxipass-tui keygen ~/my.opkey.

  2. Open the vault with the keyfile using the -k option: oxipass-tui open ~/passwords.opdb -k ~/my.opkey.

The project describes the keyfile’s JSON fields as version, hash, and base64-encoded data. Its hash is the first four bytes of SHA-256 over the raw key bytes, rendered as lowercase hexadecimal. The README says this short hash detects corruption; it is not an authentication mechanism. Keep the keyfile available with the vault: the documented key derivation uses its bytes when present.

Navigation, search, and clipboard controls

The README documents these keyboard controls:

  • j or Down and k or Up to navigate.
  • / to search; the project describes search as live.
  • r to reveal or hide secrets in the preview.
  • c to open the copy picker.
  • a to add an entry, e to edit, and d to delete.
  • g to open the password generator.
  • q or Ctrl+C to quit.

For clipboard transfer, the README says the application uses the OSC 52 terminal escape sequence instead of relying on X11 or Wayland clipboard libraries. It describes this as working in “any modern terminal”; that is the project’s statement, not a compatibility guarantee for every terminal configuration.

What is and is not established about security and features

Cryptographic algorithm names and a file-format description are not the same as an independent security assessment. The reviewed project documentation does not establish whether oxipass-tui has undergone an external audit, nor does it establish implementation correctness or operational security. No named adoption, performance, or security statistics are documented in the reviewed sources.

A listing from LinuxLinks dated October 6, 2026, reports TOTP and encrypted backups, but those features are not in the README feature list described above. Treat them as secondary reporting rather than confirmed current first-party capabilities unless the repository’s current documentation confirms them.

The documented first-party workflow is a Rust source build, local .opdb vault, optional .opkey, and terminal-based interaction. The project documentation does not provide a platform support matrix or establish official binary releases.
