You can use ToolJet MCP to have an MCP-compatible AI coding agent create a starting invoice-review app inside a ToolJet workspace. The app can put a scanned invoice beside extracted, editable fields and show duplicate and purchase-order matching context. That generated structure is a starting point—not proof that extraction, matching, approval rules, or accounting controls are correct.
What the example app is designed to do
ToolJet’s invoice-verification tutorial describes a review workflow rather than a simple data-entry form. Its proposed app gives an accounts-payable reviewer the invoice image and extracted values together, with context for duplicate screening, purchase-order matching, and approval routing.
The example also includes three pages: invoice capture and review, an approval queue, and a monthly summary. Reviewers can correct extracted values and take actions such as approve, reject, or send back. The app is intended to show a routing reason and approval state on an invoice record. These are features in ToolJet’s proposed example; the tutorial does not establish OCR accuracy, complete duplicate detection, compliant approvals, or production readiness.
Start with your actual data and rules
The tutorial assumes an existing PostgreSQL datasource and an illustrative schema for suppliers, purchase orders and their lines, goods receipts, invoices and invoice lines, tolerance logs, roles, and settings. Use that as a map of the entities an invoice-review workflow may need, not as a schema to copy unchanged. Table names, identifiers, relationships, and available data vary by organization and system.

Before asking an agent to build the app, map the workflow to your source of truth: connect each submitted or scanned bill to the supplier, extracted invoice values, relevant purchase order and lines, received goods, duplicate-screening result, matching outcome, and approval decision. Your AP policy—not the tutorial—must define matching tolerances, exception handling, approval authority, and routing. The tutorial’s contractor scenario uses “about 900 scanned supplier invoices a month” and includes a sample approval threshold; these are example prompt inputs, not industry benchmarks or recommended controls.
Connect an AI client to ToolJet MCP with limited access
MCP provides a structured connection between an MCP-compatible AI client and a ToolJet workspace. ToolJet says its MCP operations work within the permissions of the user whose personal access token (PAT) is connected to the workspace. Its app-generation documentation also says the agent can inspect configured datasources; reachable data may be read while it explores them.
Use a development workspace with development data for generation, and give the PAT owner only the workspace permissions required for the task. ToolJet’s MCP overview lists a ToolJet PAT, Node.js 20 or newer available to the AI client, and an MCP-compatible client among the requirements. The setup guide provides client-specific instructions, including paths for Codex, Claude Code, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and other compatible clients. Client support and setup steps can change, so check the current guide when configuring your environment.
Ask for a reviewable first version
ToolJet’s tutorial consolidates its example into a prompt for three pages: capture and review, an approval queue, and a monthly summary. The requested design uses native ToolJet components, a dense AP-oriented layout, and PostgreSQL-backed records. It places the invoice scan beside editable extracted values, surfaces duplicate warnings and three-way-match context, supports routing and approve/reject/send-back actions, and includes supplier and trend summaries.
Be explicit about the datasource and business entities that exist in your workspace. ToolJet’s app-generation guide describes an agent inspecting available datasources, creating an app, adding queries, binding components, and returning links for editing and testing. A prompt can specify the intended structure, but it cannot make your schema or policy universally understood. ToolJet’s tutorial notes that its build took several passes before the prompt was consolidated.

Use the returned editing and testing links to inspect what was actually generated. Check that datasource bindings and queries point to the intended development records, then test representative invoices and exceptions. Have AP owners verify that matching logic, exception reasons, and routing reflect your organization’s rules before operational invoices are used. These checks are prudent implementation steps, not validation results reported by the tutorial.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep extraction, review, and matching distinct
The tutorial names Textract as the source of extracted fields in its example. Document extraction is a separate dependency from ToolJet MCP: your organization must configure the chosen extraction service and verify how its output reaches the app. Keep the original invoice image available beside the extracted values so a reviewer can compare and correct them.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Likewise, showing purchase-order and receipt context is not the same as proving a correct match. Define how the app should handle missing records, duplicates, quantity or price differences, and other exceptions using your own data and controls. Ensure that reviewers can see why an invoice was routed for attention and what its current approval state is. The tutorial does not report measured extraction accuracy, detection completeness, or payment-safety results.
Test in development before releasing the app
ToolJet says MCP and ToolJet AI operate in the development environment by default, reading datasources configured there rather than staging or production. Keep generation and initial validation on development data, verify the resulting queries and permissions, and use your organization’s normal promotion and release process before connecting the app to operational invoices.
ToolJet’s MCP overview says actions are performed within the authenticated PAT owner’s permission context and that associated audit events reflect that owner’s actions. That describes platform access and activity; MCP itself does not approve invoices or provide an accounting control framework. Review workspace, app, page, and query permissions as part of your release checks. ToolJet’s supported tools documentation describes the available MCP operations.
