Claude can help turn actual and budget or forecast figures into an Excel variance report, either inside an existing workbook or by creating a spreadsheet from a prompt. The key is to specify your organization’s variance rules and verify the formulas and totals: Anthropic describes spreadsheet capabilities, but does not promise that a generated report will follow your accounting policy or be error-free.
Which Claude-in-Excel route fits your workbook?
Anthropic describes three distinct ways to work with spreadsheet tasks. The best fit depends on whether you need to edit an existing workbook, start a new file, or work through Microsoft’s Copilot experience.
| Route | Where you work | What Anthropic or Microsoft describes | Best fit and access consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude for Excel add-in | Claude sidebar in Excel | Anthropic says it can read, analyze, modify, and create workbooks; explain changes; work with workbook structure and formula dependencies; debug formulas; and populate templates. Anthropic’s October 2025 announcement describes it as a research preview. | Consider this route when you want to work with an existing workbook and preserve its structure. Availability has changed over time; check current account, plan, and organization access. |
| Spreadsheet file creation in Claude | Claude creates a spreadsheet file from your instructions | Anthropic’s September 2025 announcement describes creating financial models, trackers, and budget templates, including examples with variance calculations, formulas, and multiple sheets. | Useful as a starting point for a new report or template. The announcement does not define one required variance-report layout or establish that a generated formula matches your policy. |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot Agent Mode with Claude | Excel through Microsoft 365 Copilot Agent Mode | Microsoft’s November 2025 announcement describes an option to use Claude in preview for building and editing spreadsheets, generating formulas, analyzing data, and identifying errors. | This is a Microsoft Copilot path, not Anthropic’s Claude for Excel add-in. Check whether your Microsoft tenant and account can use it. |
In May 2026, Anthropic said its Microsoft 365 add-ins, including Excel, were generally available and described Excel capabilities such as building financial models from filings and data feeds, auditing formulas across linked workbooks, and running sensitivity analyses. Because availability depends on account and organization configuration and can change, confirm access before following a setup guide. See Anthropic’s May 2026 announcement.
For this walkthrough, the focus is Claude for Excel: the in-workbook assistant. It is the most direct route when your actuals and budget or forecast already live in a workbook.

Prepare the workbook and settle the variance rules
Make a copy of the workbook or start with a clean template before asking Claude to make changes. Identify the sheets and fields it should use: actuals, budget or forecast, reporting period, account or department identifier, and units or currency. If columns have ambiguous names, explain them in the prompt rather than assuming Claude will infer their meaning correctly.
Decide how your organization defines variance before requesting formulas. Common choices include actual minus budget or budget minus actual; the two produce opposite signs. Specify whether you also need a percentage variance and how to treat a zero or negative denominator, missing budget, missing period, credits, and other sign conventions. State how your team labels favorable and unfavorable results. These are business rules, not universal defaults supplied by Claude.

- Confirm that actual and budget figures cover matching periods and use compatible units.
- Specify the required level of detail, such as department by month or account by quarter.
- Tell Claude how to flag incomplete or inconsistent inputs instead of silently treating them as zero.
- Say whether it may add a report sheet and whether it must leave source sheets unchanged.
Ask Claude to create a structured report
Use a prompt that names the source sheets, fields, calculation rules, output layout, and review requirements. Replace the example rules below with the definitions approved by your finance team:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchUsing the Actuals and Budget sheets, create a new variance report by department and month. Use actual minus budget for dollar variance and (actual minus budget) divided by budget for percentage variance. Flag zero or missing budget values instead of dividing by zero. Keep the source sheets unchanged. Show the formulas and source cells you used, list assumptions, and reconcile the report totals to the source data.
The requested report can include a summary sheet, department-and-period detail, dollar and percentage variance columns, notes on material changes, and a list of assumptions. Ask Claude to flag missing fields or inconsistent periods rather than inventing values. A prompt can guide the output, but it does not establish that the result follows your organization’s accounting definitions.

Review Claude’s edits, formulas, and totals
Anthropic says Claude for Excel can explain its changes and link explanations to referenced cells. Its October 2025 announcement says Claude can “discuss how a spreadsheet works, modify it while preserving its structure and formula dependencies, debug and fix cell formulas, populate templates with new data and assumptions, or build new spreadsheets entirely from scratch.” This is Anthropic’s description of the product, not an independent accuracy guarantee. Use the explanations to trace calculations back to source cells, then check the work yourself.
- Inspect the source cells and confirm that each output row uses the intended actual, budget, department, and period values.
- Recalculate a sample of dollar and percentage variances using your approved definitions, including a zero or missing budget case if one exists.
- Compare report totals with the source workbook and check that formulas fill across every intended row and period.
- Confirm that favorable and unfavorable labels match your sign convention and that assumptions or flagged exceptions are visible.
Do not share the report as final until the figures reconcile and any exceptions have been resolved or clearly documented.

Understand the limits of published performance figures
Anthropic has published several figures about financial or spreadsheet agents, but they concern different systems and evaluation contexts. They should not be treated as evidence that Claude for Excel will produce a correct variance report for your workbook.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- In October 2025, Anthropic reported a 55.3% result for Sonnet 4.5 on the Vals AI Finance Agent benchmark. That benchmark result does not measure accuracy on an individual variance report. See the Claude for Excel announcement.
- The same announcement said Anthropic planned to collect feedback from 1,000 initial Claude for Excel users before broader rollout. That was an announced preview plan, not evidence that the cohort completed or a study result. See the Claude for Excel announcement.
- Anthropic reported that a separate Excel agent built with Claude Opus 4 by FundamentalLabs passed five of seven Financial Modeling World Cup levels and scored 83% accuracy on complex Excel tasks. This describes that deployment and evaluation, not the Claude for Excel add-in or a variance-report task. See Anthropic’s FundamentalLabs announcement.
When connected data or reusable skills matter
If your workflow depends on outside data, Anthropic said in February 2026 that Claude for Excel supports MCP connectors. It named providers including S&P Global, LSEG, Daloopa, PitchBook, Moody’s, and FactSet, and said the capability was available on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans at that time. Connector availability and account access can differ, and a connection does not guarantee the source provides the right figures for your report. Check Anthropic’s February 2026 announcement alongside current access information.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Anthropic also says its skills can improve specialized work and that its own skills can read and generate professional Excel spreadsheets with formulas. Its skills announcement describes reusable or custom skills as a way to adapt Claude to workflows; it does not identify a dedicated variance-report skill. A workflow skill may help standardize instructions, but it does not remove the need to verify calculations.
