You can build a portable music player around an ESP32-S3, but the design described here is a custom-board project—not a ready-made kit or a tested, finished product. It pairs a PCM5102A digital-to-analog converter (DAC) with a 2.8-inch display, microSD storage, five-way controls, and a Li-Po battery. The project repository provides a parts list and wiring assignments; it does not establish playback formats, sound quality, battery life, build cost, or safe charging performance. See the project’s README and wiring notes.

What this ESP32-S3 player design includes

The design combines the ESP32-S3 with storage, a display, physical controls, audio output, and battery-related circuitry. Its parts list points to a custom board rather than a build made by simply connecting a set of ready-to-use modules. The README names these components:

  • ESP32-S3 chip and the support components needed around a bare chip
  • PCM5102A DAC with a 3.5 mm jack
  • 2.8-inch ILI9341 display without a PCB and an FPC display connector
  • SDIO microSD slot and a 128 GB microSD card
  • Five-way button
  • Li-Po battery and charging regulator
  • USB-C header, indicator LEDs, resistors, and capacitors

This is the repository author’s component plan, not a verified bill of materials. It does not establish that a particular display, connector, card, battery, or charger will work with every board or with one another. Confirm the exact part specifications before buying or assembling anything.

How the project connects its components

The following pin assignments are the project’s wiring design. They are not universal ESP32-S3 recommendations, and they should not be copied blindly to a different module or board.

Before adapting these connections, check the exact chip or module package and the board’s existing wiring. Espressif’s ESP32-S3 Series Datasheet, version 2.2 documents the chip’s pin multiplexing and peripheral routing. The datasheet confirms platform capabilities; it does not validate this player’s wiring or firmware.

What to check in the bare-chip and power circuitry

ESP32-S3 support components

The project notes call for 10 kΩ pull-ups on EN and GPIO0, a 1 µF capacitor from EN to ground, and reset and boot button connections. These details matter because the design uses an ESP32-S3 chip rather than assuming a development board already includes all required support circuitry. Verify the implementation against the chip and board documentation before laying out or powering a board.

  • ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1-N16R8 SPI voltage: 3.3v, ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 is an entry-level development board equipped with Wi-Fi + Bluetooth module ESP32-S3
  • Most of the I/O pins on the module are broken out to the pin headers on both sides of this board for easy interfacing. Developers can either connect peripherals with jumper wires or mount ESP32-S3-DevKitC on a breadboard.
  • The ESP32-S3-DevKitC development board equipped with ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1-N16R8, a general-purpose Wi-Fi + Bluetooth LE MCU module that integrates complete Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE functions.
  • ESP32-S3-N16R8 cable can be used: USB Type A to Type-C cable or CC cable Note the distinction between the commonly used USB A port to Type-C cable that can only be charged, which cannot be used for communication between YD-ESP32-S3 and the host.
  • USB-to-UART Port and ESP32-S3 USB Port (either one or both), default power supply (recommended)

Battery monitoring

The README shows a battery-level divider using two 100 kΩ resistors and a 0.1 µF filter capacitor, with the divider midpoint connected to an ADC-capable input such as GPIO5. This describes a measurement circuit; it does not establish battery runtime or validate the complete power design.

Li-Po charging and USB-C

The repository’s charging and USB wiring notes are terse. They mention a charging regulator and a 1.2 kΩ resistor, plus a USB-C header with 5.1 kΩ, but do not establish battery chemistry details, charging-current limits, thermal behavior, protection requirements, or safe operation. Do not treat those notes as a standalone charging circuit specification. Before connecting a Li-Po cell, consult the documentation for the exact charger, battery, protection circuitry, and board, and confirm that the complete design is appropriate for those parts.

Build expectations and unresolved questions

The project repository is the source for its own parts list and connections, but the available documentation does not establish a finished, tested player. In particular, it does not state:

  • Which audio file formats the firmware supports
  • Measured audio quality or suitable headphone impedance
  • Battery runtime, charging performance, or operating temperatures
  • Actual build cost or current availability of the listed parts
  • Whether the firmware uses wireless features

The ESP32-S3 platform includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy capabilities, as documented by Espressif, but that alone does not mean this player’s firmware uses them or supports Bluetooth audio.

How other ESP32-S3 player designs differ

A separate project takes a different approach, with a 1.14-inch TFT, WM8978 codec, NS4150B amplifier, RTC, USB Type-C, microSD/TF expansion, and a different charging arrangement. Its documentation specifies a particular ESP32S3 development-module configuration and Arduino environment. These are architectural differences, not evidence that its components can be substituted into the 2.8-inch ILI9341 design.
