The strongest squad is built around the mission, not a universal tier list. Before choosing classes, make sure your team can reach and complete the objective, deal reliable damage, control enemy options, and recover when a key unit is hurt. Then verify that every member has a safe place to end the turn and that the plan still works if one specialist is unavailable.

Start with the mission condition

Read the objective before selecting a single operator. A capture mission asks you to reach a location, interact with it and hold it. An escort mission adds movement and protection for a vulnerable unit. Sabotage usually combines access with a timed or exposed interaction. Survival rewards a composition that can deny approaches and recover from attrition. Extraction requires both an entry plan and a way out. Elimination removes the interaction requirement but still demands reliable damage, positioning and a response to reinforcements.

Many tactics games separate primary and secondary objectives. The XCOM 2 manual, for example, presents objectives alongside action points, cover, concealment and line of sight in the tactical interface. Treat secondary goals as a squad-building requirement when their rewards, timers or penalties affect the campaign. A team that can win firefights but cannot reach a terminal, carry an item or leave the map is not effective for that mission.

Assign jobs before choosing classes

Class names vary, but useful squads cover four jobs. A character may cover two jobs, yet the squad should not depend on one irreplaceable specialist.

Objective access

Someone must be able to reach, interact with, defend and, when necessary, extract from the objective. This job includes movement tools, hacking or interaction abilities, scouting for a safe route and enough durability to survive the approach. On an escort or sabotage map, objective access may matter more than adding a second pure damage dealer.

Reliable damage

Reliable damage means more than a high maximum hit. The squad needs attacks that work at the ranges and sight lines the map is likely to provide, can reach priority targets without an elaborate setup and remain useful when an ideal flank is unavailable. Include at least one dependable way to finish exposed or weakened enemies so that control abilities are converted into actual eliminations.

Control and disruption

Control reduces what the opposing force can do. Depending on the ruleset, that can mean suppression, pinning, displacement, blocking a lane, denying cover, breaking a defensive position or forcing an enemy to move. Control is valuable because it protects the rest of the squad while creating safer damage windows. It is also a form of damage prevention: an enemy that cannot shoot, advance or use a strong position is less dangerous even if it remains alive.

Recovery and support

Recovery keeps a bad turn from becoming a lost mission. Look for healing, revival, stabilization, retreat, displacement, screening, scouting or defensive buffs. A support unit should improve the squad’s whole turn rather than chase low-value damage. In XCOM 2, the manual documents medikits and Specialist healing or stabilization. In Company of Heroes 2, retreat is a way to keep a squad alive. Other games may use different names, but the job is the same: preserve future actions.

A repeatable squad-building process

1. Translate the objective into tasks

Write down the actions required to win: reach a point, interact, protect a unit, hold a zone, destroy a target, survive a number of turns or extract. Add the threats that can interrupt those actions. This prevents a common mistake: selecting a team that wins open combat but has no safe way to spend turns on the objective.

2. Mark the jobs your roster can cover

For every candidate, note its objective access, damage, control and recovery contributions. Also record whether those contributions work at short, medium or long range, whether they require line of sight, and whether they consume the unit’s whole turn. An operator with a powerful ability that prevents movement or a follow-up attack may be less useful than a slightly weaker unit that can move, act and finish in cover.

Electronic Arts’ guide to STAR WARS Zero Company describes operators as differing in Talents, Specializations, Weapon Classes and abilities, with deployments chosen by mission and playstyle. That is a useful model: choose the capabilities needed by the map, then select the individuals who provide them.

3. Match range and terrain

Inspect the likely engagement distances before committing to a loadout. Company of Heroes 2’s manual explains that units have maximum ranges, weapon types perform differently at different ranges and some weapons have restricted firing arcs. A short-range specialist needs a route into close cover; a long-range unit needs sight lines and protection from flanking. If a map is dense, a squad built entirely around long sight lines may spend too many turns repositioning. If it is open, a team that must cross exposed ground to attack at close range may lose the action economy battle before contact.

4. Plan the safe turn before the attack

Before pressing the attack, decide where every member will end the turn. Identify the essential action, the movement needed to reach it and the defensive option left for the enemy response. In an action-point system, movement, attacks, utilities, reloads, overwatch and defensive stances all compete for the same budget. A strong turn usually has one clear priority, a useful end position and a reserve for an unexpected enemy or objective change.

5. Build overlapping answers

Pair scouting with a safe follow-up, control with dependable damage and frontline presence with recovery. If one unit exposes an enemy but cannot survive the return fire, the information has little value. If a controller pins a target but nobody can exploit the opening, the action may only delay the problem. Overlap does not mean duplicating every class; it means ensuring that at least two members can respond when the preferred unit is out of position, injured or forced to reload.

6. Keep a recovery option available

Do not spend every stabilizing ability at the first opportunity. Keep a medic, revive, retreat, displacement, suppression or other defensive answer for the enemy response when the ruleset permits it. Recovery is also positional. A retreat path, a reserve unit or a covered route to the extraction point can be more valuable than one additional attack this turn.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Rebuild after contact

Reassess after the first engagement. Injuries, destroyed cover, changed objectives, enemy range and newly revealed threats can invalidate the original plan. Rotate the next deployment around the jobs that are now missing. In Zero Company, bonds, cross-training, recruitment and a roster that can grow to 20 operators provide ways to preserve coverage while rotating operators. The figure is specific to that game and should not be treated as a general squad-size recommendation.

Use mission type to set priorities

Mission condition Primary squad question Capabilities to emphasize
Capture or hold Can the team reach the point and survive while spending turns there? Objective access, control, durable cover use and recovery
Escort Can the squad move with a vulnerable unit without losing tempo? Screening, reliable damage, route control and healing or stabilization
Sabotage Can a specialist interact with the target while others prevent interruption? Scouting, control, objective access and a protected exit
Survival Can the team reduce incoming pressure over multiple turns? Suppression or other control, defensive positioning, recovery and sustained damage
Extraction Can the squad complete the task and still reach the exit? Mobility, rear-guard control, redundancy and an injury recovery plan
Elimination Can the team defeat priority threats across the map’s likely ranges? Reliable damage, target access, control and enough survivability to avoid being disabled

Position the squad so it can act next turn

Cover is not decoration. The Company of Heroes 2 manual calls it one of the most important tactical considerations, and explains that cover is directional, can be destroyed and can be bypassed by flanking. Exposed squads are more vulnerable to fire and suppression.

  • Place cover between the squad and the main threat, then check that it protects against the direction of the expected attack.
  • Avoid stacking the entire team in one blast area or firing lane. Keep enough spacing that one attack cannot remove several jobs at once.
  • Do not assume destroyed cover will protect you on the next turn. Recheck the tile after explosions, breaches or environmental damage.
  • Flank only when the route provides a safe exit or the payoff is worth the exposure. A successful flank that leaves the attacker surrounded is usually a trade, not a solution.
  • When suppression, range or lost cover changes the risk, reposition instead of repeating the same attack from a worse state.

Think in terms of the next safe action, not only the current hit chance. A unit that deals damage and ends in useful cover generally contributes more than one that deals slightly more damage and becomes the enemy’s easiest target.

Protect your action economy

Every turn has competing demands. Movement may be required to obtain line of sight; an attack may be needed to remove a threat; a reload, utility or defensive stance may prevent a worse response. XCOM 2 exposes action points, cover, concealment, line of sight, available actions and objectives as tactical state. Use that information before committing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set a priority for the turn

Choose one outcome that makes the position safer: eliminate a priority threat, secure the objective, break suppression, create a protected route or withdraw. Use remaining actions to support that outcome. Avoid spending several turns on low-impact setup while an enemy can still attack freely.

Reserve a response

Whenever the rules allow it, retain an action or a defensive option for an enemy revealed after movement. If every member spends the full turn attacking, a new threat may force an emergency retreat with no actions left. The reserve can be overwatch, suppression, a guard stance, a heal, a displacement ability or simply ending in stronger cover.

Reduce corrective movement

Poor positioning makes allies spend later turns fixing the previous turn. Before moving, check whether the destination supports the next attack, protects the unit and keeps it close enough to receive help. A squad whose members constantly cross the map to rescue one another has less effective action economy than a slightly less aggressive team that can act from stable positions.

Sequence teamwork instead of taking isolated turns

EA’s Battlefield V field manual recommends mixed classes and combat roles, playing the objective together, communicating and using support abilities as force multipliers. In a single-player game, translate that advice into sequencing. Let one unit expose or control a target so another can deliver reliable damage. Let a support unit improve the whole turn before a damage dealer acts. Keep members close enough to assist without placing them in one area attack.

A practical sequence

  1. Scout or obtain information from a position that can be defended.
  2. Control the most dangerous enemy or deny its firing lane.
  3. Use reliable damage on the priority target while the control effect is active.
  4. Move the objective specialist or vulnerable unit through the space you just made safe.
  5. End with recovery, screening or a defensive stance that limits the enemy response.

This order is not mandatory. If the controller must move first to obtain line of sight, or the objective has a timer, change the sequence. The principle is to make each action improve the safety and value of the next one.

Compare candidate squads with the same checklist

When two lineups look plausible, score both against the same questions rather than choosing by class reputation.

Axis What to verify Warning sign
Objective access Can the squad reach, interact with, defend and extract from the objective? The only interaction-capable unit must cross open ground alone.
Reliable damage Can it defeat priority threats at the map’s likely ranges without spending every action on setup? Damage depends on one fragile combo or an ideal flank.
Control Can it suppress, pin, displace, flank, deny cover, block lanes or otherwise reduce enemy options? Enemies keep their strongest firing positions and actions.
Recovery Can it heal, revive, stabilize, retreat or rotate a damaged member? One injury removes an entire job from the plan.
Action economy Does each member contribute useful actions without forcing allies to repair poor positioning? Several turns are spent reloading, regrouping or correcting movement.
Survivability Can members end turns in useful cover without exposing several at once? A single area attack or flank can disable multiple roles.
Redundancy If the best damage dealer or support unit is unavailable, does the plan still function? One named specialist is the only answer to a mission-critical problem.

Common composition failures and fixes

Choosing a universal ratio

There is no supported universal “best” class ratio, squad size or weapon loadout for every turn-based tactics game. Zero Company uses operator Talents, Specializations, Weapon Classes, bonds and a growing roster, while XCOM 2 and Company of Heroes 2 expose different action, cover, range and reinforcement systems. Use a ratio only after the named game’s roster, objectives, difficulty and rules are known.

Taking too many damage dealers

A damage-heavy squad may win a clean firefight but fail an interaction, lose control of a lane or collapse after one injury. Replace one redundant attacker with objective access, control or recovery when the mission requires it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bringing a specialist with no protected route

An interaction unit cannot solve the objective if it must cross exposed ground while the rest of the squad fights elsewhere. Pair the specialist with scouting, suppression or a screen, and plan the return route before the interaction begins.

Clustering for convenience

Keeping everyone together simplifies support but increases the cost of area attacks and creates one blocked firing lane. Use mutual support without occupying the same vulnerable space.

Attacking from bad cover

Cover can face the wrong direction, be destroyed or be bypassed by a flank. If the enemy can attack from an angle your cover does not protect, move before repeating the attack.

Spending recovery too early

Healing or stabilizing a minor wound may leave no answer for a disabling hit later. Preserve at least one recovery or retreat option until the enemy’s next response is understood.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring the exit

Extraction and sabotage missions often become difficult after the objective is complete. Reserve mobility, control and a rear guard so the squad can leave without abandoning an injured or slow member.

A pre-deployment checklist

  • What exactly ends the mission: capture, escort, sabotage, survival, extraction or elimination?
  • Which unit reaches and interacts with the objective, and who can replace it?
  • Where will reliable damage work at the map’s likely ranges?
  • Which ability controls the most dangerous enemy or lane?
  • Who heals, revives, stabilizes, screens, retreats or scouts after a bad exchange?
  • Where can each member end the first two turns in useful, correctly oriented cover?
  • Can one attack, flank or destroyed obstacle remove several roles at once?
  • What action is reserved for an unexpected enemy or objective change?
  • If the best damage dealer or support unit is injured, what is the backup plan?
  • What changes after contact: injuries, destroyed cover, enemy range or a newly revealed route?

What “effective” means across different games

The framework transfers because it describes decisions rather than a fixed roster. The exact implementation does not. A game with two action points may reward flexible movement and attacks; a game with restricted firing arcs may make facing and flanking decisive; a game with retreat or reinforcement mechanics may value preservation over a risky kill. Read the game’s manual or tactical interface for the rules that govern action points, cover, concealment, line of sight, ranges, healing and retreat before copying a composition from another title.

Build the next squad from the mission’s requirements, give every essential job at least one backup, and judge each turn by the position it creates for the following turn. That process remains useful even when classes, squad sizes and weapons change.
