The most reliable way to support healthy arteries is to build a consistent eating pattern: make vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans and other healthy proteins routine; replace saturated fats with unsaturated fats; and keep sodium, added sugars and heavily processed foods in check. No single food or supplement clears plaque, and an eating plan does not replace medical care.

The American Heart Association (AHA) 2026 dietary guidance focuses on the pattern over time. The framework can be adapted to your culture, budget, cooking skills, calorie needs and medical advice rather than followed as a rigid menu.

What an artery-supportive eating pattern includes

The AHA’s 2026 guidance identifies nine features of a cardiovascular-supportive pattern:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Adjust energy intake and activity to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight.
  2. Eat plenty of varied vegetables and fruits.
  3. Choose foods made mostly with whole grains instead of refined grains.
  4. Choose healthy protein sources.
  5. Replace saturated-fat sources with unsaturated-fat sources.
  6. Favor minimally processed foods over ultraprocessed foods.
  7. Minimize added sugars in foods and drinks.
  8. Reduce sodium by choosing lower-sodium foods and cooking with little or no added salt.
  9. If you do not drink alcohol, do not start; if you drink, limit your intake.

These elements work together. A bowl of vegetables does not offset a diet dominated by salty packaged meals, and avoiding one ingredient does not make an otherwise unbalanced pattern heart healthy. The AHA says healthy patterns generally provide essential nutrients, are rich in fiber and are unlikely to exceed 10% of energy from saturated fat. For most people, dietary cholesterol is no longer the primary target for reducing cardiovascular risk; the overall pattern and the major fat sources matter more. Individual treatment plans can differ.

Start with a flexible plate, not a rigid menu

At most meals, make vegetables or fruit a substantial part of the plate, add a high-fiber carbohydrate, include a healthy protein and use a small amount of unsaturated oil or another unsaturated-fat food. This structure works for home cooking, packed lunches, restaurant meals and prepared foods.

Vegetables and fruit

Use several colors and types across the week. Fresh, frozen, canned and dried produce all count. Rinse canned vegetables and beans when practical, and compare labels for sodium and added sugars. Whole fruit is usually more filling than juice because it retains fiber; use unsweetened frozen fruit in oatmeal or yogurt, and keep cut vegetables ready for snacks.

Whole grains

Make oats, barley, brown rice, bulgur, quinoa, whole-grain bread or whole-wheat pasta routine choices. Products labeled simply “multigrain” are not necessarily whole grain, so check the ingredient list for a whole-grain ingredient near the beginning. Refined grains do not have to disappear, but they should not crowd out higher-fiber choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Beans, seafood and other proteins

Beans, peas, lentils, nuts, seeds, fish, seafood, skinless poultry and low-fat or fat-free dairy are examples named by the AHA. Include plant proteins regularly and seafood when it fits your preferences, budget and any medical advice. Limit processed meats and fatty meats, which can bring substantial saturated fat and sodium.

Unsaturated fats

Use liquid nontropical plant oils such as olive or canola oil instead of butter, shortening or other major sources of saturated fat. Nuts, seeds and fish also provide unsaturated fats. Portion still matters because all oils and fats are energy dense.

Dairy and calcium-rich foods

Low-fat (1%) or fat-free milk, yogurt and other dairy can fit the pattern. Unsweetened fortified alternatives may be useful for people who avoid dairy; compare their protein, calcium, vitamin D, added sugar and sodium labels.

Illustrative amounts for a 2,000-calorie pattern

The AHA provides the following sample daily amounts to make its guidance concrete. They are an illustration for a 2,000-calorie eating pattern, not a prescription. Your portions may need to be higher or lower because of age, body size, activity, pregnancy, medications or health conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Food group AHA sample amount Ways to distribute it
Vegetables 2½ cups Add vegetables to lunch and dinner, then use extra portions for snacks or breakfast.
Fruit 2 cups Use whole fruit with breakfast, as a snack or alongside a meal.
Grains 6 ounces, with at least half whole grain Combine oats, whole-grain bread, brown rice, barley or whole-wheat pasta with other grains.
Low-fat or fat-free dairy 3 cups Spread milk, yogurt or suitable fortified alternatives across meals.
Lean protein 5½ ounces, emphasizing plant sources and seafood Alternate beans, lentils, fish, skinless poultry, nuts, seeds and other lean options.
Nontropical plant oils 2 tablespoons Use measured oil for cooking, dressings or finishing rather than pouring freely.

These amounts describe food-group proportions, not a required menu or a guarantee of a particular calorie intake.

Control sodium with shopping and label habits

The AHA’s sodium page, reviewed July 15, 2025, reports that average U.S. intake is above 3,100 milligrams per day. Its general recommendation is no more than 2,300 milligrams daily, with an optimal goal of no more than 1,500 milligrams for most adults. More than 70% of sodium consumed in the United States comes from packaged, prepared and restaurant foods rather than the saltshaker.

Those are population-level recommendations, not automatically your personal target. People who lose large amounts of sodium through sweat, or anyone whose healthcare team has given different instructions, should follow individualized advice.

Read the Nutrition Facts panel correctly

  1. Check the serving size and the number of servings in the package.
  2. Find sodium per serving, then multiply it by the number of servings you actually eat. If you eat two label servings, you consume twice the listed sodium.
  3. Review saturated fat and added sugars at the same time; a low-sodium product can still be high in either.
  4. Scan the ingredient list for sodium-containing ingredients, including forms of salt and sodium-based preservatives.
  5. Compare similar products and choose the lower-sodium option that still works for taste, price and nutrition.
Label wording What it means How to interpret it
Low sodium 140 milligrams or less per serving A defined per-serving threshold; still check how many servings you eat.
Reduced sodium At least 25% less sodium than the usual product A relative reduction, not a guarantee that the food is low in sodium.
No salt added No salt was added during processing It does not necessarily mean sodium-free; ingredients can naturally contain sodium or include other sodium compounds.

Lower-sodium cooking moves

  • Build flavor with garlic, citrus, vinegar, herbs, spices, pepper and toasted aromatics.
  • Choose plain frozen vegetables, unsalted nuts and no-salt-added canned goods when available.
  • Rinse canned beans and vegetables to remove some surface sodium.
  • Use smaller amounts of salty condiments, sauces, cured foods and seasoning blends; compare brands because sodium varies.
  • At restaurants, request sauces and dressings on the side, choose grilled or steamed items and compare posted nutrition information when available.

Reduce saturated fat, added sugar and ultraprocessed foods

Replace rather than simply subtract saturated fat

Swap butter or fatty meat with olive or canola oil, nuts, seeds, beans, fish or lean poultry. Check labels on baked goods, fried foods, creamy sauces and full-fat dairy, which can concentrate saturated fat. The AHA’s pattern is generally unlikely to exceed 10% of energy from saturated fat, but a clinician may set a different target for a specific condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify added sugars

Sweetened drinks, desserts, sweet snacks and many flavored products can add sugar without much fiber or protein. Choose water or unsweetened drinks more often, select plain yogurt and sweeten foods with fruit when desired. Nutrition Facts panels list “added sugars” separately from naturally occurring sugars in fruit and milk.

Use processing as a practical signal

Not every packaged food is a problem. Frozen vegetables, canned beans, plain oats and pasteurized milk are convenient minimally processed choices. The AHA advises favoring minimally processed foods over ultraprocessed foods, especially when the latter are high in sodium, added sugars or saturated fat. Judge the whole product by its ingredient list and Nutrition Facts panel rather than by a single front-of-package claim.

Mediterranean-style and DASH approaches

Both patterns can implement the AHA principles, but neither is a mandatory or universally identical diet. “Mediterranean diet” is a generic term; eating habits differ among countries and regions.

Practical question Mediterranean-style pattern DASH pattern
Core foods Vegetables, fruit, grains, potatoes, beans, nuts, seeds and olive oil, with low-to-moderate dairy, eggs, fish and poultry. Vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, nuts, low-fat dairy and lean proteins, organized to support blood-pressure control.
Fat emphasis Olive oil is commonly the primary added fat. Uses healthier unsaturated fats; olive oil can fit but is not required.
Meat and dairy Fish and poultry are generally more common than red meat; dairy is often moderate. Allows more dairy and meat than a typical Mediterranean-style pattern while emphasizing lean choices.
Regional flexibility Adapt ingredients to local food traditions; there is no single standard menu. Adapt food choices while preserving its plant-food, whole-grain and lower-sodium emphasis.
Sodium work Still requires label reading and lower-sodium choices. Sodium reduction is a central practical application, so label and restaurant checks remain important.

Choose the pattern whose foods, cooking methods and social context you can sustain. You can also combine their shared features without claiming to follow a strict version of either.

Turn the framework into a weekly plan

1. Inventory your real constraints

List your usual meals, cooking time, budget, available equipment, cultural staples, allergies and foods you will not eat. An effective plan solves those constraints instead of assuming daily elaborate cooking.

2. Select repeatable meal formulas

Prepare two or three breakfasts, lunches and dinners that can be rotated. Examples include oatmeal with fruit and nuts; a bean-and-vegetable bowl over brown rice; lentil soup with a side salad; fish with roasted vegetables and barley; or a whole-grain sandwich with low-sodium filling and fruit. Adjust portions to your energy needs.

3. Build a short shopping list

  • Several fresh or frozen vegetables and two or three fruits.
  • Whole-grain staples such as oats, brown rice, barley or whole-grain bread.
  • Beans, lentils, peas, unsalted nuts and seeds.
  • Fish or seafood, skinless poultry and low-fat dairy as appropriate.
  • Olive, canola or another nontropical liquid plant oil.
  • Low-sodium canned and packaged options after label comparison.

4. Prep components, not an entire week of identical meals

Cook a grain, wash produce, portion unsalted nuts, make a bean-based dish and prepare a low-sodium dressing. Store components safely and combine them differently so the plan remains varied.

5. Plan for eating away from home

Before ordering, compare sodium, added sugars and saturated fat in nutrition information when available. Choose meals built around vegetables, whole grains and lean or plant proteins; ask for salty sauces separately and keep portions reasonable. Online ordering requires the same label scrutiny as a supermarket purchase.

Alcohol guidance

The AHA states: “If you don’t drink alcohol, don’t start and if you do, limit your intake.” Alcohol is not required for cardiovascular benefit, and starting to drink is not a heart-health strategy. If you drink, discuss an appropriate limit with your healthcare professional, especially if you take medicines, are pregnant, have liver disease or have had difficulty controlling alcohol use.

Adjust the plan safely

Energy needs vary with body size, activity, age, pregnancy, growth and illness. The sample 2,000-calorie amounts should not be used to force weight loss or gain. A registered dietitian or clinician can tailor calories, protein, carbohydrate, potassium, fluid and sodium when kidney disease, heart failure, diabetes, hypertension, gastrointestinal disease, food allergies or medication interactions are involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not make abrupt sodium or supplement changes to treat a diagnosed condition without medical guidance. An eating pattern supports prevention and risk management; it does not remove arterial plaque or replace prescribed medicines, testing or follow-up.

Common pitfalls and fixes

  • Chasing a “cleansing” food: Replace the search for a miracle ingredient with improvements you can repeat across meals.
  • Trusting front-label claims: Verify sodium, saturated fat and added sugars per serving on the Nutrition Facts panel.
  • Underestimating restaurant portions: Split a meal, save part for later or choose a smaller serving before eating.
  • Making the plan too strict: Keep favorite foods in sensible portions and improve the surrounding meal rather than abandoning the pattern after one indulgent choice.
  • Ignoring taste and convenience: Keep quick options such as frozen vegetables, no-salt-added beans, oats and canned fish available.
  • Using the wrong personal target: Ask your healthcare team whether the AHA’s general sodium and calorie examples apply to you.

How to judge whether your plan is working

Assess the pattern over several weeks, not one meal. Look for more vegetables and whole grains, regular plant or seafood proteins, fewer sugary drinks and processed meats, and lower sodium on the labels you buy. Track blood pressure, weight or laboratory measures only as advised by your clinician; these measures require context and should not be interpreted as proof that a particular food has changed an artery.
