You do not need a game engine to build an AI-powered interactive experience. A browser app made with HTML, CSS and JavaScript can collect input, call a server-side model, update a structured interface and preserve application state. A game engine becomes useful only when your core requirement is a real-time 3D world, physics or a headset-first experience.

Start with the interaction you want, then choose where it runs and where inference happens. For most projects, the practical path is a conventional web interface with a backend AI call. ChatGPT-hosted MCP components, hybrid on-device/cloud inference and WebXR are specialized branches for different distribution, privacy and immersion requirements.

Define the interaction before choosing a platform

Write the experience as one complete loop before selecting an SDK or model:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. User action: What does the visitor type, click, upload, drag or say?
  2. AI contribution: Does the model classify, generate, summarize, recommend, transform or control a tool?
  3. Interface change: What visible card, list, canvas, control or status changes after the response?
  4. Persistent state: What must survive a refresh, a conversation turn or a return visit?

For example, an interactive guide might accept a question, call a model, render a structured answer and expose controls that refine the result. The model supplies language or reasoning; your application still owns validation, navigation, loading states, permissions, retries and state transitions. Keeping those responsibilities in ordinary application code makes the experience predictable and lets you replace a model or interface without rebuilding everything.

For integrations that attach a visual component to a tool call, OpenAI’s MCP UI guidance recommends separating tools that fetch or process data from tools that render a component. That separation is useful even in a standalone web app: one function can produce validated data, while a separate rendering layer decides how people inspect or edit it.

Use a browser app as the default architecture

A basic implementation has four layers:

  • Web UI: HTML and CSS (or a JavaScript component framework) for controls, results and status messages.
  • Client logic: JavaScript that validates input, starts requests, updates state and handles cancellation or errors.
  • Application server: An endpoint you control that authenticates users, applies policy and calls the AI service or MCP tools.
  • Model and data services: The model, retrieval system, database or business APIs that provide the response.

Keep credentials and privileged operations on the server. A browser should not contain a long-lived secret that can be copied by every visitor. The OpenAI MCP server quickstart demonstrates the server-backed pattern with a Node SDK and a simple to-do workflow; its interface is contained in one HTML file, showing that an engine is not required for a useful interactive component.

Build the interface with mock responses first. You can confirm the flow, empty states and error messages before adding network latency or model variability. Then replace the mock function with a server request and add observability for request IDs, latency, failures and usage limits.

A minimal browser flow

<form id="prompt-form">
  <label for="question">Ask a question</label>
  <textarea id="question" required></textarea>
  <button type="submit">Ask</button>
</form>
<div id="status" role="status" aria-live="polite"></div>
<article id="answer"></article>

<script>
const form = document.querySelector('#prompt-form');
const status = document.querySelector('#status');
const answer = document.querySelector('#answer');

form.addEventListener('submit', async (event) => {
  event.preventDefault();
  const question = document.querySelector('#question').value.trim();
  if (!question) return;

  status.textContent = 'Working…';
  answer.textContent = '';
  form.querySelector('button').disabled = true;

  try {
    const response = await fetch('/api/ask', {
      method: 'POST',
      headers: {'Content-Type': 'application/json'},
      body: JSON.stringify({question})
    });
    if (!response.ok) throw new Error('Request failed');
    const result = await response.json();
    answer.textContent = result.answer;
    status.textContent = 'Complete';
  } catch (error) {
    status.textContent = 'The request could not be completed.';
  } finally {
    form.querySelector('button').disabled = false;
  }
});
</script>

The endpoint name in this example is an application decision, not a provider requirement. In production, validate the request body, authenticate the caller, enforce rate limits, handle timeouts and return a stable response shape. Render model output as text or sanitized markup rather than inserting untrusted HTML directly into the page.

Choose where users will access the experience

Route Best fit Important trade-offs
Standalone browser app A conventional link, website or product that should work outside a host conversation. You control the page, routing and deployment. Hosting, model choice and prices depend on services you select; the documented material does not establish a universal provider or cost.
ChatGPT-hosted app with the Apps SDK An app whose logic and interface should run inside ChatGPT and connect to an existing backend. The Apps SDK is described by OpenAI as available in preview. Developer access, submissions and future program terms can change, so check the current official help page.
MCP server with optional UI Tool-based workflows where a compatible host can show a focused component for selected actions. Tools can work without a widget; a component adds structured visual interaction but must have a useful non-UI path.
WebXR experience Spatial interaction, virtual reality or mixed reality where a flat page is not sufficient. It adds headset and browser considerations. Meta’s examples demonstrate possibilities, not universal device compatibility.

Build a standalone web experience step by step

1. Describe the state machine

List the states a visitor can see: idle, validating, loading, success, partial result, permission denied, offline and failed. For each state, specify which controls are enabled and what the visitor can do next. This prevents a model call from becoming the entire product flow.

2. Create a static interface

Implement the form, result area, controls and responsive layout with fake data. Include an empty state, a visible loading indicator and an error message that explains recovery. Use semantic labels and keyboard-accessible controls from the beginning.

3. Add a server endpoint

Have the browser send a narrowly defined request to your server. The server should authenticate the session, validate length and format, add only the context the task needs, call the model or tool, and return a predictable JSON response. Do not let arbitrary client input select privileged tools or database operations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Make responses structured where the UI needs structure

If the page needs a title, a list of actions and a confidence or status field, request and validate those fields rather than asking the client to parse prose. Structured output makes it possible to disable an action when required data is missing and to display partial results safely.

5. Add persistence deliberately

Keep ephemeral state, such as a spinner or an in-progress draft, in the page. Store durable state in a server-side database or another controlled store when users need to return to it. Decide whether a model conversation is part of the record and define deletion and retention behavior before launch.

6. Test failure paths

  • Submit an empty or oversized request.
  • Disconnect the network while a request is running.
  • Return malformed or incomplete model data.
  • Refresh after a result and verify the intended persistence behavior.
  • Attempt the same action twice and confirm that it does not create duplicate side effects.

Use MCP when tools and host integration are the main requirement

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) route is appropriate when an AI host should discover and call your capabilities. An MCP server exposes tools such as searching records, creating an item or calculating a result. A UI is optional. OpenAI’s MCP server and UI quickstart explicitly treats adding a component as optional, so a tools-only server remains a valid design when text responses are enough.

When to add a component

Add a visual component when people need to inspect several records, compare options, edit structured fields, confirm a consequential action or navigate a canvas. A widget can make those operations clearer than a long conversational response. Keep the underlying tool useful for clients that do not render components, because not every MCP host offers the same UI extensions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate data tools from render tools

A data-fetching tool should return validated records or calculations. A render-oriented tool can return the information needed to display a component. This division lets you test business logic without a browser and prevents presentation details from becoming a requirement for every client.

Understand the ChatGPT component model

In the documented quickstart, a minimal UI is delivered from a single HTML file and rendered in an iframe in ChatGPT for selected tool calls. Treat the iframe as an untrusted boundary: communicate through the host mechanism supported by the integration, validate messages and avoid assuming that a browser API or extension exists.

The Apps SDK is a related ChatGPT-hosted route. OpenAI describes it as allowing developers to design both an app’s logic and interface, connect an existing backend and test through Developer Mode. The help page labels the SDK a preview, says submissions are being accepted and notes that monetization details will be shared in the future. Those statements are program status, not a promise of approval, distribution or revenue.

Design the component for a conversational host

Choose the smallest surface that supports the task:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Inline UI: Use an inline card for a focused result or a small action set that belongs beside the conversation.
  • Fullscreen UI: Use a larger surface for maps, editing canvases, long comparisons or workflows that need sustained attention.
  • Picture-in-picture: Use a persistent small view for an activity that should remain visible while the conversation continues.

Use feature detection and fallbacks for host-specific extensions. A compatible host may support a capability that another host does not, so a component should retain a clear text or basic-control path when the extension is unavailable. Do not hide the only way to complete an action inside an optional widget.

Choose on-device, cloud or hybrid inference

Inference location changes what your experience can do. A cloud model is generally the straightforward choice for multi-turn conversations, tool calling or richer multimodal tasks. On-device inference can be attractive when local context, offline behavior or keeping input on the device is important. Firebase’s documented hybrid web approach combines both: try local inference where supported and fall back to a cloud-hosted model when the device or feature cannot satisfy the request.

Decision factor On-device path Cloud path
Privacy and local context Firebase documents local processing as a use case for privacy and local context. Input is sent to a service you configure, so review its data handling and your own retention policy.
Connectivity Can support offline functionality when the required model is available locally. Requires a network connection to the model service.
Browser support The current Firebase web guide says support is for Chrome on desktop; its documented Prompt API setup notes Chrome 139 or higher. Depends on the cloud service and your network, not the local model availability described by that guide.
Documented web capabilities Single-turn text generation, supported text and image input, and structured output. Suitable for capabilities that the guide lists as unavailable locally, subject to the service you choose.
Multi-turn chat and tools The guide lists multi-turn chat, audio/video/document input and function calling among unavailable on-device features. Use cloud inference when those capabilities are required.

In Firebase’s preferred on-device mode, unsupported features can fall back to cloud. Make that behavior visible in your product design: a user may expect private local processing but receive a cloud response when a request needs a capability the device lacks. State the mode in your privacy notice and offer a clear failure or consent path if cloud fallback is not acceptable.

A practical hybrid policy

  1. Detect whether the browser and device meet the current local-inference requirements.
  2. Classify the request by capability: simple single-turn text, structured extraction, multimodal input, conversation history or tool use.
  3. Run supported simple tasks locally when the user has selected that mode.
  4. Route unsupported tasks to the cloud only when the user has permitted fallback and the request can be sent safely.
  5. Report which path was used and handle a missing local model, unavailable network or partial response without trapping the interface in a loading state.

Do not present Firebase’s “no-cost inference” use case as a guaranteed zero-cost product outcome. Model downloads, cloud fallback, storage, hosting and other services can still affect the project.

Use WebXR only when spatial interaction is essential

WebXR is a browser route for virtual-reality and mixed-reality experiences. Choose it when the interaction depends on looking around a scene, placing objects in space, using a headset controller or combining the camera view with virtual content. If the experience is fundamentally a form, dashboard, editor or conversational card, a 2D web UI will usually reach more people with less complexity.

Meta’s Horizon OS developer material provides a WebXR first-steps tutorial described as two hours and includes working examples such as a target-practice mini-game, a sneaker configurator and a mixed-reality furniture interaction. The duration describes the tutorial, not the time required to ship a production application. The examples establish possible patterns; they do not guarantee support on every headset, browser or mobile device.

Integrate AI into a WebXR scene

Keep the model interaction separate from the render loop. A user can ask for a scene variation, describe an object or request guidance; your application validates the response, converts it into a limited set of scene actions and then updates the WebXR view. Do not allow unconstrained model text to execute arbitrary code or manipulate unrestricted world state. Provide a conventional fallback for devices that cannot enter an immersive session.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Make the experience understandable and resilient

Show what is happening

Display a clear status while a request is pending, disable duplicate submissions and provide a cancel or retry action where practical. If a response streams, reveal partial content without implying that it is final. If a tool changes data, ask for confirmation before an irreversible operation and show the affected records or values.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handle uncertainty

Label generated suggestions as suggestions, show source or record context when your application has it, and give users a way to correct an answer. A polished animation cannot compensate for an interface that presents an unverified model response as a deterministic fact.

Protect user data

Minimize the context sent to a model, redact secrets, enforce authorization on the server and log access without storing unnecessary personal content. Define retention, deletion and export behavior. These are application responsibilities; selecting an AI API does not remove them.

Keep the UI accessible

  • Use labels, headings and landmarks that screen readers can follow.
  • Provide keyboard equivalents for every pointer interaction.
  • Announce loading, completion and errors with an appropriate live region.
  • Do not make color, motion or a headset the only way to understand a result.
  • Offer a text or 2D path when an immersive or visual component is unavailable.

Compare the main decisions before implementation

Question Choose the standalone web route when… Choose the specialized route when…
Where should people use it? They need a normal URL and a product you control. They already work inside ChatGPT or require a headset-based scene.
Does the workflow need a visual widget? Use ordinary page components tied to your own state and routes. Use MCP UI when a compatible host should render a component for a tool call; retain a tools-only path.
Where should inference run? Use cloud inference for broad capability and simpler feature coverage. Use on-device or hybrid inference when local context, offline use or privacy goals justify browser and capability constraints.
How much spatial interaction is required? Use a responsive 2D interface for forms, cards, editors and dashboards. Use WebXR when spatial presence is the product requirement, not merely a visual embellishment.

Common failure modes and fixes

The browser exposes an API secret

Symptom: A key appears in shipped JavaScript or can be read from browser developer tools. Fix: Move the provider call behind your server, authenticate requests and issue only the minimum data needed by the client.

The model controls the whole interface

Symptom: A prompt must describe every button, validation rule and transition. Fix: Put deterministic rules and state transitions in code; ask the model only for the language, classification or bounded structured data it contributes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A widget works in one host but not another

Symptom: A host-specific extension, iframe behavior or display mode is missing. Fix: Feature-detect capabilities, provide an inline or text fallback and keep the underlying MCP tools useful without the component.

Local inference silently becomes cloud inference

Symptom: A request that worked offline fails or sends data to a service. Fix: Check the current browser and model capability, surface fallback status and require consent when policy forbids cloud processing.

Immersive mode excludes ordinary visitors

Symptom: A visitor without a compatible headset cannot complete the task. Fix: Provide a 2D mode for the core workflow and treat XR as an enhancement unless spatial interaction is genuinely essential.

The interface appears frozen during a slow response

Symptom: There is no feedback while a model or tool runs. Fix: Add pending, timeout, retry and cancellation states, and make it impossible to submit the same side effect repeatedly.

A launch checklist

  • The first user action, AI contribution and visible result are written in one sentence.
  • The browser UI has empty, loading, success, partial and error states.
  • Secrets and privileged operations are server-side.
  • Inputs and model outputs are validated against a defined schema.
  • Authentication, authorization, rate limits and abuse handling are implemented.
  • Persistent data has an explicit retention and deletion policy.
  • MCP tools remain useful when no UI is rendered.
  • ChatGPT-specific features use capability detection and a fallback.
  • On-device support is tested on the documented desktop Chrome path, including the current version requirement.
  • Cloud fallback is disclosed and controlled.
  • WebXR has a non-immersive path if the audience includes ordinary browsers.
  • Keyboard, screen-reader, reduced-motion and small-screen behavior have been tested.
  • Documentation and availability claims are rechecked before release because the Apps SDK and browser inference support can change.

How to choose your first milestone

For a first build, implement one narrow interaction in a standalone browser page: one input, one server request, one structured result and one recovery path. Once that loop is reliable, decide whether distribution requires a ChatGPT-hosted MCP component, whether privacy or offline behavior justifies hybrid inference, or whether spatial interaction warrants WebXR. This sequence keeps the core experience testable and prevents a specialized platform from hiding unresolved product and application-logic problems.

The result is an AI-powered interactive experience, even though no game engine is involved: standard web code owns the interface and state, a backend coordinates capabilities, and the model contributes only where it adds value.
