There is no reliable, game-specific answer until “Victory” is identified. The name can refer to different games, and “battleplan” is also used for unrelated systems. Confirm the exact game, platform and edition before copying any orders or tactics. If you mean Matrix Games’ World War II real-time strategy game Battleplan, the conditional framework below gives a sound starting point: read the mission and clock, deploy around terrain, choose an attack that matches the defenses, and use zone orders to control overextension.

Why the game’s identity matters

“Victory” is not specific enough to identify one ruleset. Matrix Games’ Battleplan is a World War II real-time strategy game in which you draw plans on the map and watch officers and companies execute high-level orders. Warhammer Age of Sigmar uses “battleplan” for tabletop mission frameworks built around battlepacks, objectives, scoring and secondary battle tactics. Those are different systems, so an order that makes sense in one cannot be assumed to work in the other.

Before using any tactical guide, record these details:

  • The full game title and developer or publisher.
  • Your platform and edition or rules version.
  • The scenario, mission or game mode.
  • Whether you need real-time strategy instructions or tabletop mission advice.

If those details do not match Matrix Games’ Battleplan, treat the rest of this article as a checklist for identifying what you need rather than as a universal recipe.

If you mean Matrix Games’ Battleplan

Matrix Games describes Battleplan as a World War II real-time strategy game centered on operational planning. You draw plans directly on the map, assign formations and issue high-level orders instead of continuously directing every individual soldier. The launch campaign is described as containing 11 historical missions and two tutorial levels. Those numbers describe available content, not a proven success rate for any tactic.

The guidance in the following sections comes from the developer’s descriptions of deployment, terrain, offensive orders and zone orders. It is a starting method, not an independently tested ranking of the best strategies for every mission.

Build the plan in the order the mission demands

1. Read the briefing before moving a unit

Start with the mission briefing and the amount of mission time remaining. The offensive guidance for Battleplan specifically puts those checks before choosing an approach. Identify the objective, the direction in which progress is required and any time pressure. A fast attack can be appropriate when the clock is tight, but speed is not automatically valuable if the route ends at heavy fortifications or a dense city.

Write down the decision you are making: “I need a rapid penetration,” “I need to secure ground without exposing a flank,” or “I need to preserve the force while I learn the map.” That single sentence prevents you from selecting an order simply because it sounds aggressive.

2. Deploy for the first contact, not the final position

In the cited defense guidance, units are placed during deployment inside friendly territory and gain fortifications when the mission starts. That makes the opening placement consequential: units positioned for the likely approach can begin from prepared ground instead of racing to establish a position after contact.

Use the terrain labels described by the developer as your first filter:

  • Towns and forests: treat them as defensive terrain when deciding where a unit should receive the first attack.
  • Swamps, wetlands and beaches: expect penalties to several unit attributes, so do not assume a force crossing or holding them will perform like the same force on firm ground.

Do not read that list as a promise that every town is safe or every forest is decisive. It tells you where to look for defensive advantages and where movement or combat performance may be reduced. Check the actual mission layout before committing the main force.

3. Match the opening attack to defenses and time

The developer’s offensive diary describes a Breakthrough Attack followed by an Assemble order as a fast option. The intended opportunity is a lightly defended line: break through, then reorganize rather than allowing the force to remain scattered.

The same guidance gives two important limits. A breakthrough is not suited to heavy fortifications or dense cities, and a fast plan should therefore be rejected when the map presents those obstacles on the selected axis. In that situation, spend more time arranging the force and securing a route rather than treating the first contact as a race.

Because the available descriptions do not establish a named “best” deliberate assault sequence, avoid inventing one. The defensible rule is narrower: use the fast Breakthrough Attack–Assemble combination only when the mission clock and the enemy’s preparation make a rapid penetration plausible.

4. Use zone orders to control how far the force commits

Zone orders determine how a formation advances and holds ground. The developer distinguishes two useful behaviors:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Seize Ground: an aggressive advance that can overextend the formation.
  • Balanced Hold: an advance made when flanks are secure and the force is not outnumbered.

Think of these as risk settings rather than labels for “attack” and “defense.” Seize Ground is appropriate only when the extra reach is worth the exposure. Balanced Hold is the safer choice when the formation can move forward without leaving an open flank or entering a fight while outnumbered.

The zone’s shape can be changed while execution is under way. Use that control to narrow the area when the leading elements are outrunning support, or to widen it only after the flanks and follow-on units are in position. This is the game’s way of turning a broad plan into a bounded commitment.

5. Draw a plan you can supervise

Battleplan is built around map-drawn plans and officer-led execution. That means the plan should be legible at a glance: a main axis, a point at which the force assembles, and boundaries that prevent an advance from expanding indefinitely.

After issuing an order, watch what the officers and companies actually do. If the lead elements reach the edge of the zone while supporting formations lag behind, the plan has become operationally different from the drawing. Adjust the zone or pause to assemble instead of adding more distant objectives.

Choosing an opening approach

Approach Use it when Main risk Control you retain
Breakthrough Attack followed by Assemble The mission clock favors speed and the selected line is lightly defended. The force can lose cohesion if the penetration meets stronger resistance than expected. Reorganization through the Assemble order after the initial penetration.
Seize Ground zone You need an aggressive advance and can protect the flanks. Overextension. Change the zone shape during execution.
Balanced Hold zone Flanks are secure and your force is not outnumbered. Advancing too cautiously to meet a strict time limit. A bounded advance that avoids the commitment of an unrestricted push.
Prepared defensive start The approach is unclear, the enemy is fortified, or you need a reliable opening position. Losing initiative if the mission requires rapid progress. Deployment inside friendly territory and the fortifications gained when the mission begins.

This table is a decision aid, not a validated tier list. The developer’s descriptions do not establish win rates, universal counters or a best order for every scenario.

Beginner mistakes and practical corrections

Choosing an order before checking the briefing

Symptom: You select a fast attack because it is available, then discover that the objective is behind fortifications or that the remaining time does not justify the risk.

Correction: Read the briefing and check the remaining mission time first. Only then decide whether speed or controlled positioning is the scarce resource.

Ignoring the deployment advantage

Symptom: Units begin exposed even though the mission allows placement in friendly territory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Place the units that must absorb the first contact where the available defensive terrain and friendly territory support them. Remember that the cited guidance says fortifications are gained when the mission starts, so the deployment location affects the opening state.

Treating all ground as equivalent

Symptom: A formation performs worse after entering a swamp, wetland or beach, or an attack stalls at a position that offered the defender terrain benefits.

Correction: Mark towns and forests as potential defensive anchors and treat swamps, wetlands and beaches as costly routes. Reconsider the axis before committing the main force.

Letting the zone outrun the formation

Symptom: The leading units occupy ground while flanks and supporting companies remain behind.

Correction: Replace an unnecessarily aggressive Seize Ground shape with a tighter zone, or use Balanced Hold when the conditions for a secure advance are present. The aim is to keep the plan’s boundaries aligned with the force that can actually support them.

Assuming a developer description is a guarantee

Symptom: A tactic that sounds appropriate fails in a different mission, and you conclude that the order is broken.

Correction: Recheck the assumptions: mission time, enemy preparation, terrain, relative numbers and flank security. The published descriptions explain intended behavior; they do not establish that one sequence wins across all scenarios.

A first-session checklist

  1. Confirm that you are playing Matrix Games’ Battleplan, not another game or a tabletop battleplan system.
  2. Read the mission briefing and note the remaining time.
  3. Identify the objective and the likely defended approaches.
  4. During deployment, place units within friendly territory and use towns or forests as potential defensive positions.
  5. Mark swamps, wetlands and beaches as terrain that may reduce several unit attributes.
  6. Choose a Breakthrough Attack followed by Assemble only when the line is lightly defended and speed is necessary.
  7. Choose Seize Ground only when the additional reach is worth the possibility of overextension.
  8. Use Balanced Hold when flanks are secure and the force is not outnumbered.
  9. Draw zones with boundaries you can monitor, then reshape them if the advance outruns support.
  10. Observe officer and company execution instead of assuming the drawn plan is being followed perfectly.

If your game is not Matrix Games’ Battleplan

Stop before applying these orders. In Warhammer Age of Sigmar, for example, a battleplan belongs to a battlepack and defines objectives, scoring and secondary battle tactics for a tabletop game. It does not use map-drawn real-time orders, deployment fortifications or Breakthrough Attack and Assemble in the sense described above.

For any other game called Victory, the useful next step is to provide the exact title, platform, edition and mission name. With that information, a tactical guide can identify the actual deployment rules, victory conditions, unit controls and terrain effects instead of transferring advice from an unrelated system.
