The most controllable way to organize X is to use each feed tool for a different job: choose Following when you want posts from accounts you follow, create or follow Lists for separate topic streams, and add muted words to reduce unwanted terms in your Home timeline and notifications. Use muted accounts when one account is the problem but you do not want to unfollow or block it. This combination improves control without pretending that any setting can guarantee a perfect feed.
Understand what each X timeline shows
Start by choosing the timeline that matches your purpose. X presents two main Home views, and they do not use the same selection rules.
Following: the account-level view
X describes Following as the timeline for posts from accounts you follow. It is the appropriate starting point when you want to see updates from your existing network rather than recommendation-driven material. The view still reflects X’s product behavior and interface changes, so do not assume that it promises a particular ordering or posting frequency. For You: followed accounts plus recommendations
For You combines posts from accounts you follow with recommendations. Recommendations can use multiple signals, and X says that actions such as following accounts and using Lists help shape what appears. That means For You can be useful for discovery, but it is not a strict subscription feed. The X Help Center’s recommendations policy explains the general approach.

Choose a starting view for each task
- Use Following for a broad read of accounts you intentionally follow.
- Use a List timeline when you need a narrower stream, such as industry news, local information, or a hobby.
- Use For You when you deliberately want recommendations alongside followed accounts.
Switching views does not change who you follow. It changes which stream you are reading.
Plan a feed before changing settings
A useful setup begins with decisions about what you want to read and what you want to avoid. Write down two or three reading goals, then map each goal to one control. For example, you might want a professional-news stream, a local-events stream, and fewer posts about a recurring event you do not follow.
- Accounts you always want available: keep following them and read them in Following.
- Accounts that belong to a subject: place them in a List so that subject has its own timeline.
- Terms that repeatedly bring unwanted posts or alerts: add those terms as muted words.
- One account whose posts you need to stop seeing while keeping the relationship: mute the account instead of unfollowing or blocking.
This separation prevents a common mistake: using one setting to solve a different problem. A List does not remove posts from your main timeline, and a muted word does not remove an account’s posts unless those posts contain a matching term.
Create topic-based Lists
X says Lists let you customize, organize, and prioritize posts in your timeline. A List is a separate timeline made from selected accounts, so it is best used as a subject stream rather than as a second copy of everyone you follow. The X Help Center guide to Lists documents the feature and its controls.
Choose a clear purpose
Name each List for the question it answers, not for a vague category. “Security updates” is more useful than “People I like” because you can tell immediately why you opened it. Practical purposes include:
- News and analysis about one professional field
- Local government, transport, or community information
- Researchers, educators, or practitioners in a specific subject
- Live coverage for a temporary event
- Personal-interest accounts that you do not want mixed into work reading
X supports Lists organized by group, topic, or interest. These examples are ways to apply that model; they are not required categories.

Add members deliberately
Add an account when its posts consistently serve the List’s purpose. Avoid adding an account merely because it posted one useful item. A narrow List is easier to scan and easier to maintain. If an account belongs in two subjects, adding it to both Lists can be more useful than creating one oversized stream.

Open Lists in X, select the List, and read its timeline as a separate stream. The membership of the List determines which accounts are represented there; it does not alter your Following timeline. If labels or navigation positions differ between the web and mobile apps, use the current Lists entry in X’s navigation and the controls shown for that List.
Keep a List maintainable
When a List becomes noisy, remove the accounts that no longer match its purpose instead of adding more filters. When a subject changes, rename the List or create a new one rather than leaving an unclear mixture in place. A short description can record the boundary, such as “official local notices and service interruptions.”
Follow an existing List without following every account
You do not have to build every stream yourself. X documents that you can follow a List without following the individual accounts in that List. This is useful when another user has assembled a focused set of accounts and you want that collection as a reading stream without changing your own Following relationships.
What following a List changes
- You gain access to the List timeline.
- The accounts in the List are not automatically added to your individual Following list.
- You can continue to manage your own account follows separately.
Following a List is therefore a curation shortcut, not an endorsement of every post or a replacement for checking the List’s purpose and membership. If the List stops being useful, unfollow the List or stop opening it; you do not need to undo a set of individual follows.

X allows Lists to be pinned. Pinning changes how quickly you can reach a List; it does not change the List’s membership or convert it into your main Home timeline. Pin the streams you read most often, such as a work-news List during the day and a local-information List when planning travel.

To manage this, open your Lists area, select the List’s options, and use the pin control where X provides it. Because interface labels can change, confirm that the selected List appears in your pinned navigation after saving. Unpinning later removes the shortcut only.
Use muted words as a targeted filter
Muted words are for terms you want to reduce in two specific places: notifications and the Home timeline. X states, “Muting words and hashtags only applies to your notifications and Home timeline.” Posts containing a muted term can still be found through search, so muting is not a universal deletion or privacy tool. Decide what to mute
Use a distinctive word, phrase, or hashtag that reliably identifies material you do not want in those two surfaces. Examples might include the name of a recurring event, a spoiler term, or a campaign hashtag. Avoid broad words that appear in posts you actually need; an over-broad mute can quietly remove useful items from your Home timeline and notifications.

Understand matching behavior
- Matching is case-insensitive, so capitalization does not create a separate escape.
- Muting a word also mutes its hashtag. You do not need to create separate entries for the plain word and the same word with a hash symbol.
- The setting affects notifications and Home, not search results.
Add, review, and remove terms
- Open X’s privacy and safety settings and locate the muted-words controls. The exact menu path can differ by app version, so use the current “Muted words” or “Advanced muting options” label.
- Choose the option to add a word or phrase.
- Enter the term exactly as you want it matched, then save it.
- Return to the muted-words list when a term is no longer useful and remove it rather than accumulating permanent filters.
After saving, judge the result in Home and notifications. If the unwanted posts remain visible in search, that is expected behavior, not a failed mute.
Mute an account when you want distance without unfollowing
Account muting solves a different problem from word muting. X says muting an account removes that account’s posts from your timeline without unfollowing or blocking it, and the muted account is not notified. The control is described in X’s account-muting help page.
When account muting is the right choice
- You want to keep the follow relationship but stop seeing routine posts.
- You need a temporary break from an account’s coverage.
- You do not want to use blocking, which is a different relationship and visibility control.
Mute the account from its profile or from one of its posts using X’s current mute control. If you later want its posts back, return to the account and undo the mute. Account muting does not make matching words disappear from search, and it does not turn the account into a List.

Build practical feed setups
A professional-reading setup
- Keep the accounts you need for direct updates in Following.
- Create a List for analysis and another for official announcements if those have different reading purposes.
- Pin the List you open most often.
- Mute recurring promotional or event terms that distract from your work reading, checking that they are not words you need for your job.
This setup lets you read a broad account view and then switch to a narrower subject stream without repeatedly changing who you follow.
A local-information setup
- Follow essential local services or organizations whose posts you need directly.
- Put neighborhood groups, transport accounts, and event feeds into a local List.
- Follow an existing local List if a trusted curator has already assembled one.
- Mute terms for topics you never need, while remembering that search will still show them.
A temporary-event setup
- Create or follow a List for the event’s relevant accounts.
- Mute the event hashtag if it overwhelms your normal Home timeline, then open the List when you want the full event stream.
- After the event, remove the mute and archive or retitle the List for future reference.
These are organization patterns, not guarantees of better recommendations. X can still recommend material in For You, and the usefulness of a List depends on the accounts selected.

“I still see recommendations.”
Check that you are reading Following or a List rather than For You. For You intentionally includes recommendations. Following narrows the account source, while Lists narrow it further to List members.
“A muted word did not remove a search result.”
This is expected. X limits muted words to notifications and the Home timeline; search remains a way to find matching posts.
“Muting a word removed too much.”
Open the muted-words list and remove or replace the broad term. Choose a more distinctive phrase or hashtag. Because matching is case-insensitive and includes the hashtag form, adding duplicate capitalization variants will not make the filter more precise.
“I muted an account but still need its updates sometimes.”
Open that account directly when necessary, or add it to a focused List if you want its posts available in a subject stream. Muting does not unfollow the account, so you can reverse the decision later.

“A List feels as noisy as Home.”
Review its membership against the List’s stated purpose. Remove accounts that no longer fit, split one broad List into two specific topics, or stop following a List assembled by someone else. Pinning only changes access speed; it does not reduce noise.
“The menu does not match these instructions.”
X changes labels and navigation between web and mobile releases. Look for the current Lists, Following, muted words, and mute-account controls, and use the linked X Help Center pages for the latest interface-specific steps.
Review the system as your interests change
Feed organization is maintenance rather than a one-time switch. Every few weeks, open each List and ask whether its members still answer the List’s question. Remove stale accounts, split mixed subjects, and unpin streams you no longer read. Review muted words after a major event or topic change so that temporary filters do not hide terms you now need.

Also check which timeline you are using before judging the result. A carefully maintained List can be focused while For You remains recommendation-heavy; those outcomes are consistent with how the views are designed. X describes recommendations as the product of multiple signals, so follows, Lists, and mutes should be treated as controls that shape your reading rather than a promise of a universally useful feed.
