TinyJS’s documented desktop-app workflow is short: create a project with tinyjs new myapp, develop it with tinyjs dev, then package it with tinyjs build. TinyJS pairs a JavaScript backend with the operating system’s webview for the app interface, so the frontend can be plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript or an optional framework template. Platform support and distribution requirements vary, so check the project’s current instructions before installing or shipping an app.
What TinyJS does
TinyJS is an open-source tool for building native desktop apps in JavaScript. Its architecture combines a txiki.js backend, which provides system access, with a frontend rendered in the operating system’s webview. The project says this approach avoids bundling Electron, Node, or Chromium, and gives an approximate shipped size of about 6 MB. That figure is a TinyJS project estimate in an undated README, not an independently measured comparison. TinyJS project documentation
The frontend can be written in standard HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. A tiny API bridge is injected into the page so frontend code can call backend functions and receive events. The page does not have the backend’s tjs global or direct access to tjs:* modules. For operations such as reading or changing data, expose specific backend functions rather than granting the page broad access to underlying resources.

Create and run a TinyJS app

Install TinyJS using the project’s instructions for your operating system. Installation details and available release assets can change, so use the current instructions in the TinyJS repository.

In a terminal, scaffold a project:
tinyjs new myapp. The command creates a starter app namedmyapp. -
Change into the generated project directory and start development with
tinyjs dev. The project documentation says frontend edits hot-reload in the app window, while backend edits trigger an automatic process restart.Rank #2

When ready to package the app, run

Choose a frontend style
Use the default scaffold for a small app
The default project is a zero-dependency option, suitable when plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript meet the app’s needs. It avoids adding a frontend framework simply to create a window and a few interactions.

Use a framework template when it helps
TinyJS’s README lists Vite-backed templates for React, Vue, Svelte, Solid, Preact, Lit, Alpine, and vanilla frontend projects. Choose a framework if its components, conventions, or existing codebase are useful; it is optional rather than a requirement of TinyJS. The project documentation also says TypeScript backends are bundled with esbuild. TinyJS project documentation
Check platform support before building
The repository describes macOS support and labels Windows and Linux support as beta. Its README lists WebView2 as a Windows runtime requirement and WebKitGTK 4.1 as the Linux runtime requirement. Building from source on Linux also requires development packages. Consult the current README and release assets for your target system because supported platforms, package names, and prebuilt binaries may change.

Plan distribution separately from local development
A successful local build is not the same as a public release. For macOS, TinyJS documents code signing and notarization. Its README notes that an ad-hoc-signed build may run on its developer’s Mac but can require recipients to approve it through Gatekeeper; Developer ID signing and notarization are presented as the smoother route for public distribution.
The project also describes publishing archives and an update manifest. Review its current publishing instructions for the release process and platform-specific requirements before distributing an app. TinyJS project documentation
