The most reliable way to create an elite Imperial soldier fan-art character is to solve the silhouette and equipment in Blender first, sculpt material distinctions in ZBrush, reserve flexible wear for Substance 3D Painter, and render according to the final image or animation. This pipeline follows 3D character artist Hakan Kamar’s documented Tempestus Scion study, while leaving room for your own design rather than copying an official model.
The finished work should be presented as unofficial fan art. It is an original digital interpretation inspired by the Warhammer 40,000 setting, not a Games Workshop production or licensed asset.
What this project is—and what it is not
Kamar’s 9 October 2026 80 Level interview describes a Tempestus Scion character study: an elite Imperial soldier identified by Hot-shot Lasguns, Hellpistols, Carapace Armour and an Omnishield Helm. The character is his own digital artwork. Those equipment names are useful design checks, but they do not give you permission to reproduce an official miniature, concept painting or game asset.
Plan for an original mesh, original surface damage and original presentation. Use published lore and multiple visual references to understand proportion and function, then change details, insignia, pose, materials and composition enough to make the work your own. Kamar’s practical principle is worth keeping in mind: “The process matters far more than the final piece.”

1. Turn lore into a design checklist
Start with a one-page checklist instead of sculpting immediately. Mark the helmet profile, chest and shoulder armor, weapon types, ammunition or power details, gloves, boots, backpack elements and any visible cabling. For this character, the four anchor checks are Hot-shot Lasguns, Hellpistols, Carapace Armour and an Omnishield Helm.
Use a concept image for the intended composition and silhouette, then verify each item against additional references. Lore research prevents a generic science-fiction soldier from losing the visual logic of an Imperial unit. It also gives you tests to run later: does the weapon read as a Hot-shot Lasgun at thumbnail size, and does the helmet retain the Omnishield outline in a three-quarter view?
Keep reference images in a board grouped by anatomy, armor, weapons, materials and lighting. Separate “must read” forms from optional greebles. If a detail will be hidden by the final camera, it should not delay the blockout.
2. Block out the body and armor in Blender
Use Blender’s box-modeling tools for the first pass. Build a simple body proxy, then place large armor shells, the backpack, weapons and helmet as separate objects. Kamar’s goal at this stage is proportion and the location of large shapes, not a finished surface.
- Set a neutral scale and pose. A relaxed, symmetrical stance makes shoulder width, limb length and weapon reach easier to judge.
- Place the primary masses. Establish the torso, pelvis, helmet, shoulder plates, forearms, thighs, shins and backpack before adding panels.
- Check the silhouette. View the model in front, side, back and three-quarter orthographic views, then as a small thumbnail.
- Correct major errors repeatedly. Move and rescale the large forms until the character reads correctly without surface detail.
- Add only structural secondary forms. Introduce weapon receivers, magazines, armor rims and cable routes after the body proportions hold up.
Do not let an attractive panel pattern hide incorrect anatomy. A clean blockout makes every later stage cheaper because topology, UV shells and textures inherit fewer proportion mistakes.
3. Use Blender as the assembly hub
Bring Marvelous Designer clothing, decimated ZBrush meshes, materials and lighting checks back into Blender. Kamar uses Blender centrally because it combines scene assembly with flexible lighting and fast review. Keep armor plates, weapons, cloth, cables and accessories in named collections so you can isolate or replace one component without rebuilding the entire character.
Save incremental files before major operations such as decimation, remeshing, retopology and rigging. A separate object for each complex asset also lets you rebake one damaged component instead of invalidating every texture set.

4. Sculpt a readable high-poly in ZBrush
ZBrush supplies the expressive form and material definition that a box-model blockout cannot. Work from primary volumes to edge treatment, then to controlled wear. Kamar uses hPolish, Dam Standard and Standard brushes to make hard metal and softer metal read differently even before textures are applied.
Make materials distinguishable without color
- Hard armor steel: keep planes broad and transitions deliberate; sharpen important manufactured edges.
- Softer or thinner metal: allow more compression, dents and irregular edge response than on load-bearing plates.
- Cloth and padding: use larger folds and compression around straps, joints and contact points.
- Rubber, leather and cables: avoid identical sharpness and damage patterns; their flexibility should show in the form.
Use high-poly detail where it changes the silhouette, catches a key light or explains construction. Tiny scratches that cannot survive the final camera belong in texture maps rather than in expensive geometry.
5. Decide which wear belongs in geometry and which belongs in textures
Kamar keeps some defining detail in the sculpt but moves much armor damage to Substance 3D Painter height maps. This division is especially useful for a real-time character: baked normals preserve form, while Painter masks let you revise rust, paint loss and dents without reopening the sculpt.
Put deep cuts, bent rims, missing chunks and silhouette-changing dents in the high-poly mesh. Put shallow scratches, chipped paint, oxidation variation and grime breakup in height, normal and roughness information. Keep a clean, less-damaged texture variant if the character may need to appear in more than one story moment.

6. Retopologize and validate before baking
Build a manageable low-poly mesh from the approved high-poly. Split complex assets—such as the helmet, weapon, backpack and armor plates—into separate pieces. This makes UV layout, bake groups and later fixes easier to control.
Before exporting, run a technical inspection:
- Remove double vertices and unintended internal faces.
- Fix flipped or inconsistent normals.
- Identify non-manifold edges and open borders that should be closed.
- Confirm smoothing groups or hard edges match the intended UV seams.
- Check triangulation on both high- and low-poly meshes so the baked result matches the final runtime mesh.
- Verify scale, transforms, object names and material assignments.
Export high- and low-poly files with consistent names. A predictable naming scheme prevents a weapon’s high-poly from being paired with the helmet’s low-poly during a batch bake.
7. Choose a UV workflow that matches the project
The interview records a preference for Maya for straightforward UV work and RizomUV when a project has many texture sets or UDIM tiles. That is an individual workflow choice, not a controlled performance benchmark, and Blender’s native tools remain viable when they fit your project.

For any package, place seams where they are hidden by armor breaks or natural material transitions. Give broad, visible plates enough texel density for edge wear. Keep mirrored shells only when the wear and markings can genuinely be shared; unique insignia, damage and asymmetrical grime require unique UV space.

8. Bake organized maps in Marmoset Toolbag
Use separate bake groups for each asset or logical set. This prevents nearby parts from projecting onto one another and allows a single component to be rebaked after a fix.
Kamar lists the following outputs:
- Tangent-space normal
- Curvature
- Ambient occlusion at close and far distances
- World-space normal
- Vertex-color or ID
- Convex
- Concave
Inspect the normal map under a neutral material before texturing. Wavy gradients usually indicate a cage, smoothing or triangulation problem; dark seams often point to mismatched hard edges and UV borders. Keep close- and far-distance ambient occlusion separate so you can control contact shadows without over-darkening the whole character.
9. Texture in broad passes, then add controlled wear
In Substance 3D Painter, establish the major color blocks first: armor paint, exposed metal, cloth, leather, rubber and lenses. Check the model under a simple light before adding complexity. If the colors do not separate at this stage, more scratches will not solve the readability problem.
Next, work across materials to introduce rust, edge wear and variation rather than finishing one object in isolation. Kamar describes using a curvature-plus-noise mask with a Levels adjustment to create crisp but varied paint wear. Keep the Levels range restrained; a mask that marks every edge makes the armor look procedurally damaged instead of used.

10. Groom only the hair the shot can see
For a military buzz cut, Kamar uses a Maya/XGen hair cap and limits hair cards mainly to eyebrows and eyelashes. A helmet or balaclava hides most of the scalp, so building a dense hairstyle would spend production time on pixels that never appear.

Match the cap to the head before fitting cards. Keep eyebrow and eyelash density believable at the intended render resolution, and test transparency sorting in the target renderer. If the helmet comes off in a close-up, increase the grooming investment only for that shot.
11. Rig, pose and test secondary motion
Blender Auto-Rig Pro supplies still-pose controls in the documented setup. Pose the character for the story you want to communicate—alert sentry, advancing marksman or exhausted veteran—while checking that armor plates do not intersect and that the weapon remains usable.
A separate Unreal Engine 5 rig tests physics assets and a gun cable. The documented cable setup places physics spheres along the cable bones. Use enough spheres to prevent implausible sharp bends, but not so many that the simulation becomes unstable. Test the cable while the character turns, raises the weapon and settles into the final pose.
12. Render according to the deliverable
Unreal Engine handles the main scene, character turntables, gun renders and animation tests in this workflow. Movie Render Queue is used for queued output. Marmoset Toolbag serves technical renders and quick material or bake checks, while Maya/Arnold handles high-poly renders.
For a portfolio turntable, Kamar prefers eight images at 45-degree increments rather than a continuously spinning clip. That format gives the viewer clear front, side, rear and intermediate views and makes it easier to inspect silhouette and texture consistency. Match exposure, camera height and focal length across all eight frames; otherwise apparent proportion changes can be mistaken for modeling errors.
Choosing tools by the problem you need to solve
| If your priority is… | Prefer this approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Fast hard-surface proportion changes | Blender blockout | Large forms can be moved before detail commits you to a design. |
| Material-specific sculpted form | ZBrush high-poly | Brushes such as hPolish and Dam Standard distinguish planes, edges and damage. |
| Flexible real-time wear | Substance 3D Painter height and masks | Surface damage can be revised without rebuilding the sculpt. |
| Many texture sets or UDIMs | RizomUV | The documented preference is aimed at complex layouts. |
| Simple UV layouts | Maya | Kamar reports using it for straightforward unwrapping. |
| Queued animation output | Unreal Engine Movie Render Queue | Scenes and tests can be rendered in batches. |
| High-poly presentation | Maya/Arnold | Used for the documented high-poly renders. |
These are workflow decisions reported by one artist, not universal winners. Choose according to whether the final asset is a still, a turntable, an animation or a game-ready character, and according to how much detail survives at the final camera distance.

If you study a physical Warhammer 40,000 miniature for armor proportions, create your own geometry and use the miniature only as a reference. Warhammer Academy is a free educational resource covering lore, building, painting and play; its FAQ says it launched with Warhammer 40,000 lessons and labels the tools, brushes and paints shown in videos. Citadel Colour’s “Battle Ready” guidance describes a physical model with its main areas colored and a simple base finish, using either a Base, Shade and Technical method or a Contrast and Technical method. Those painting lessons can inform your digital color language, but physical paints are not required for this 3D pipeline.
Troubleshooting the most common failures
The character looks like generic science fiction
Return to the design checklist. Recheck the helmet silhouette, Carapace Armour proportions and the distinctive Hot-shot Lasgun or Hellpistol shapes. Add lore-driven construction details before adding random surface damage.
Armor looks flat after baking
Inspect the high-poly plane breaks and the low-poly smoothing and triangulation. Rebake one asset with a corrected cage and matching hard edges before changing textures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWear is everywhere and nothing feels important
Reduce the curvature-plus-noise mask with Levels, then hand-place stronger damage where hands, straps, holsters and exposed edges would plausibly contact surfaces.
Cloth intersects the armor
Correct the Marvelous Designer pattern or simulation, then return the approved garment to Blender. Do not hide persistent intersections with texture darkening.
The turntable flickers or changes exposure
Lock camera, lights, exposure and material settings before rendering all eight 45-degree views. Test the complete sequence through Movie Render Queue rather than judging a single frame.
Quality-control checklist before publishing
- The silhouette reads at thumbnail size and from all eight turntable angles.
- Imperial equipment references are recognizable but the mesh and presentation are original.
- High-poly and low-poly objects have clean names, normals, topology and triangulation.
- Bake groups are isolated, and normal, curvature, AO, world-space, ID, convex and concave maps have been checked.
- Material differences remain visible under neutral lighting.
- Hair effort matches what the helmet and camera actually reveal.
- Physics cables and armor intersections have been tested in the intended pose or animation.
- The caption clearly identifies the work as unofficial fan art and avoids Games Workshop logos or claims of endorsement.
This order—reference, blockout, assembly, sculpt, selective detail, validation, UVs, baking, texturing, grooming, rigging and purpose-built rendering—keeps expensive detail from masking design errors. It also makes the character easier to revise when the final camera, pose or publication format changes.
