A strong student portfolio website makes three things obvious within minutes: what you can do, which projects represent your best work, and what you personally contributed. For animation, that usually means a concise reel supported by selected clips and process evidence. For web design, it means showing the interface at useful sizes while explaining the brief, decisions, and outcome. Build a small, focused site with clear navigation, accessible media, and a reliable contact path rather than an unfiltered archive.
This guide takes you from audience and project selection through publishing, accessibility checks, testing, and maintenance. It also compares practical publishing approaches without assuming one service is right for every student.
1. Define the audience and the job of the site
Start by deciding who should act after viewing the site. An internship reviewer may need evidence of production skills and reliability; an admissions reviewer may want to see experimentation and growth; a collaborator may be looking for a specific specialty; a prospective client needs a clear sense of what you deliver. Career guidance from UNLV Career Services treats a digital portfolio as something that can be shared with employers, clients, and collaborators, so your intended viewer should shape both the selection and the wording.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWrite a one-sentence purpose
Use a sentence such as: “I am seeking junior motion-design work and want reviewers to see my character animation, compositing, and web-interaction skills.” This becomes a filter for every page. If a project does not support the sentence, move it to a private archive or leave it out.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a primary direction without hiding the second
Animation and web design can coexist when the relationship is clear. Put your strongest or most employable direction first, then make the second discipline easy to reach through a separate category or project filter. Avoid a home page that presents ten unrelated thumbnails with no explanation of your focus.
2. Curate a small, defensible set of projects
Quality and relevance matter more than an exhaustive archive. Both animation-portfolio guidance and student-portfolio guidance emphasize selected work and context. A practical starting point is four to eight projects: enough variety to demonstrate range, but few enough that every entry receives proper explanation.
Use a selection scorecard
- Relevance: Does it support the role, course, or type of collaboration you want?
- Strength: Is the finished result among your best work, not merely your newest?
- Evidence: Can you show decisions, iterations, or a measurable outcome?
- Distinctiveness: Does it add a skill or point of view not already represented?
- Permission: Are you allowed to publish the client, class, team, or source material?
Remove near-duplicates. One polished project with a clear story is more useful than several versions that force a viewer to compare minor changes.

Prepare a project information sheet
Collect the same core facts before building pages. Consistent metadata lets a reviewer scan quickly and prevents you from forgetting your contribution.
| Field | What to write | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Title and year | A short, descriptive name and completion year | Gives the work an identifiable reference |
| Brief | The problem, prompt, audience, or assignment | Shows that you can respond to constraints |
| Your role | Specific tasks you owned | Separates your contribution from a team result |
| Tools | Software, languages, or production methods actually used | Helps a reviewer match skills to a role |
| Process | Research, sketches, storyboards, wireframes, tests, and revisions | Reveals how you solve problems |
| Outcome and reflection | What changed, worked, failed, or would be improved | Demonstrates judgment rather than just execution |
These fields are an editorially useful baseline, not a requirement to expose every draft. Publish only process material that clarifies a decision.

Describe team work precisely
Write “I designed the interaction model and built the responsive prototype; two teammates handled visual identity and front-end implementation,” not “we designed the site.” If you directed, animated, edited, composited, or coded only one part of a group production, name that part.
3. Package animation so the work is understood immediately
Animation is time-based, so a visitor should be able to see motion without hunting for it. Lead with a concise showreel or a few representative clips, then provide stills and process frames for projects that need more explanation. The animation guidance from Wix also stresses a strong reel, project context, clean navigation, and a mobile-friendly experience.

- Open with your strongest shot rather than a long title card.
- Keep the edit focused on the skills you want hired for: character acting, motion graphics, 3D, compositing, editing, or another specialty.
- Remove repeated shots and long pauses. A reviewer should learn your strengths before attention fades.
- End with your name and a direct route to selected projects or contact information.
- Export a web-appropriate version and retain a higher-quality master for later requests.
Give the reel a descriptive title, such as “Character animation and compositing reel,” instead of an unlabeled “showreel.” If audio contributes meaning, provide captions or a transcript. If visual information carries meaning that audio does not, add a written description or audio description where practical.
Give each animation project a case-study page
Place the clip near the top, then explain the brief, your role, tools, and the decisions visible in the result. Storyboards, timing charts, style frames, rig tests, or compositing passes are useful when they explain how the final shot was made. Do not bury the finished work beneath a gallery of drafts.
4. Present web design as a decision-making process
A screenshot alone cannot show whether a web design works at different widths or why a component exists. Show the finished interface and the reasoning behind it.

Structure a web project page
- Brief: Identify the audience, problem, constraints, and intended action.
- Role and scope: State whether you handled research, information architecture, visual design, prototyping, coding, testing, or only one phase.
- Key screens: Show a useful desktop view and at least one narrow-screen state when responsive behavior is relevant.
- Decisions: Explain hierarchy, navigation, typography, color, interaction, or content choices in plain language.
- Iterations: Include a wireframe, failed direction, usability finding, or revision when it demonstrates learning.
- Result: Describe what was delivered and what you would improve next.
Use real interface crops or an accessible live demonstration when possible, but do not make the reviewer click through a prototype to discover your role. Label external or class work accurately, and remove confidential data.
Make the two disciplines feel intentional
Use the same project-card pattern, typography system, and navigation across animation and web-design sections. The content can differ—clips for animation, screens and flows for web design—but the viewer should not feel as if they entered a different site.
5. Plan the information architecture before choosing a template
A simple structure is usually enough:
- Home: Name, discipline or focus, a short introduction, and links to selected work.
- Work: A grouped index for animation, web design, or another clearly justified category.
- Project pages: One page per selected project with media and context.
- About: A concise biography, current study or location if relevant, and capabilities.
- Contact: One dependable method, plus a professional email address.
Use labels that describe the destination: “Animation,” “Web design,” “About,” and “Contact” are clearer than clever alternatives. UNLV’s guidance recommends clear headings, easy navigation, consistent visuals, and useful alternative text; these principles are more important than decorative effects.
Design the home page for a fast first pass
Place your name and focus in the first screenful, followed by one sentence that states what you make. Show three to five selected projects with readable titles and disciplines. A visitor should reach any project and your contact route without relying on a search box or a complex animation.
6. Select a publishing approach by trade-off
No single publishing route is best for every student. Compare setup effort, control, media handling, cost, domain arrangements, portability, accessibility controls, and whether you can keep the account after graduation. University resources identify several categories rather than a universal winner.

| Approach | Good fit | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted website builder | Students who want templates and a guided publishing workflow; UNLV names Wix and Squarespace as examples | Verify current price, video or storage limits, custom-domain terms, export options, and accessibility controls |
| Adobe Portfolio | Creative students who already have applicable Adobe access | Eligibility and continued access depend on your account; confirm terms before making it your only copy |
| Creative portfolio network | Students who want to share projects inside an existing creative community, such as Behance | Usually offers less independent site identity and layout control than a personal site |
| WordPress or a custom-coded site | Students who want deeper layout, code, or hosting control and can maintain it | You manage updates, backups, security, responsive behavior, and media performance; UNLV describes WordPress as customizable for users with moderate technical skill |
| GitHub Pages | Coding, research, or technical portfolios; it is listed as an option by Harvard’s career resource | Check whether the repository-and-deployment workflow suits a media-heavy animation portfolio |
Harvard’s Portfolio Tools page lists Adobe Portfolio and GitHub Pages in a specific university-resource context. Do not assume that Adobe access, hosting, or a free tier applies to every student. Adobe’s own Portfolio guidance is useful for product workflow, but current eligibility and terms still need to be checked in your account.
Protect portability
Keep original videos, images, project text, and a copy of your site structure in storage you control. Record your domain renewal date and the email address that owns the account. If an institution supplies the account, learn what happens when enrollment ends. A platform can be convenient while you are a student and unavailable later.
7. Build accessibility into every project page
Accessibility is part of presenting the work, not a final decoration. W3C WAI’s accessibility principles describes alternatives such as transcripts, captions, and audio descriptions for multimedia.
Images and thumbnails
- Write alt text that conveys the image’s purpose: “Blue character jumps over a rotating platform in a cel-animated test,” not “animation image.”
- For a screenshot, identify the screen and the important state or action.
- Leave purely decorative imagery without distracting alternative text when your publishing tool supports that setting.
- Do not put essential project information only inside an image.
Video and motion
- Give every player a descriptive label and a visible play control.
- Add captions when speech or meaningful sound occurs.
- Provide a transcript for dialogue and important audio information.
- Describe visual-only information in nearby text or an audio description when it is necessary to understand the work.
- Respect reduced-motion preferences for animated page transitions and decorative effects.
Color, keyboard, and layout
WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.4.3 sets a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text at Level AA and 3:1 for large-scale text, with listed exceptions. This is a technical criterion, not evidence that a portfolio format improves hiring outcomes. Check links, menus, forms, video controls, and project galleries with a keyboard. Make focus visible, keep heading order logical, and test narrow widths without horizontal scrolling.
A visual spot-check does not establish WCAG conformance. A formal conformance claim requires an evaluation appropriate to the standard and the pages you are claiming to cover.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
8. Follow a practical build sequence
- Write the audience and purpose statement. Keep it beside you while selecting work.
- Shortlist projects. Score relevance, strength, evidence, distinctiveness, and publication permission.
- Gather assets. Export web-sized images, a concise reel, captions or transcripts, process images, and accurate project facts.
- Draft project copy first. Write the brief, role, tools, process, result, and reflection before arranging a template.
- Choose the publishing route. Compare maintenance, media support, control, accessibility, cost, and post-graduation access.
- Create the navigation. Build Home, Work, About, Contact, and project pages before adding decorative features.
- Place the strongest evidence early. Put the reel or best interface view near the top of the relevant page.
- Add accessible alternatives. Complete alt text, captions, transcripts, labels, contrast checks, keyboard focus, and reduced-motion behavior.
- Test on multiple devices. Use a phone and a desktop or laptop, different viewport widths, keyboard-only navigation, and a slower connection if available.
- Request an outside review. Ask a peer or instructor to identify your strongest project, describe your role, find contact information, and note any confusing page.
- Publish and record ownership details. Save the domain, hosting, renewal, and account-recovery information somewhere secure.
9. Test the experience before sharing the link
Content checks
- Every project has a title, year, brief, role, tools, process evidence, and outcome or reflection where relevant.
- Team credits distinguish your work from collaborators’ work.
- All media has loaded, plays, pauses, and has an accessible label.
- Links open the intended destination and do not expose confidential files.
- Contact information is reachable from the home page and project pages.
Device and performance checks
- Open the site on a phone in portrait orientation and on a desktop-sized screen.
- Check that text remains readable, thumbnails do not crop essential content, and embedded media does not overflow.
- Compress oversized images and avoid autoplay video with sound.
- Test a page after signing out of any editing account so permissions do not hide a broken embed.
Clarity test
Give the URL to someone who does not know the project. Ask them, without coaching, which discipline you focus on, which project they would discuss in an interview, what you did on that project, and how they would contact you. Revise the page where their answers differ from your intent.
10. Maintain the portfolio as your work changes
A portfolio is a living professional document. Student-portfolio guidance recommends reflections and updates, while UNLV Career Services describes the portfolio as a dynamic tool that should be revisited periodically.
- Review the home-page selection after each major project or term.
- Replace a weaker project when a new one proves the same skill more clearly.
- Check media embeds, domain renewal, contact details, and account access every few months.
- Update your role and tools when a team project changes or receives a public release.
- Keep a dated archive of removed pages and source files so you can restore evidence without cluttering the public site.
Common failure modes and fixes
“The site looks impressive, but I cannot tell what the student did.”
Add a role line near the top of each project and explain the specific decisions you owned. For team work, list collaborators and boundaries rather than implying sole authorship.
“The reel takes too long to reveal anything.”
Move a representative shot to the opening, remove repeated material, shorten title cards, and add stills or project links for viewers who want detail.
“The portfolio is a gallery, not a case study.”
Add the brief, constraints, process evidence, and reflection. A short paragraph explaining a design decision can communicate more than another decorative image.
“The page is difficult to use on a phone.”
Reduce multi-column layouts, test touch targets, avoid hover-only information, compress media, and check that menus and video controls work without a mouse.
“A school account or platform may disappear.”
Export your assets and copy, maintain an independent backup, document the domain and hosting owner, and confirm what access remains after graduation before committing to that route.

- What discipline or role is this student pursuing?
- Which two or three projects are strongest and most relevant?
- What was the brief or problem?
- What did the student personally make or decide?
- Which tools and production methods were involved?
- How did the work change through process and feedback?
- Can the reviewer view the media accessibly on a phone or desktop?
- How can the reviewer make contact?
If a visitor can answer those questions without guessing, your site is doing its job. Choose the publishing method that you can maintain, keep the project set focused, and let clear evidence—not visual effects—carry the argument.
