To build a Steam wishlist, sign in, open a game’s Steam Store page, and use its wishlist control. Then open your wishlist and the notification settings for your Steam account. Choose email alerts, Steam mobile-app alerts, or both. Steam’s current notification page specifically lists Daily Deal, Midweek Deal, and Weekend Deal notifications; availability and labels can vary by account, region, device, and promotion.
What a Steam wishlist does
A wishlist is Steam’s built-in holding list for games you may want to buy, play, or monitor later. Adding a game does not purchase it, reserve a copy, download it, or commit you to buying it. It gives you one place to find the store pages again and can make you eligible for Steam notifications about changes such as discounts.
Valve’s current notification page describes the feature this way:
“We’ll let you know by email or through our mobile app when the games on your Wishlist are on sale as a Daily Deal, Midweek Deal or Weekend Deal.”

That wording matters. It names examples of sale events rather than promising an alert for every discount, bundle, publisher promotion, regional event, or price change. Do not treat a missing email as proof that a game was never discounted.
You can use the wishlist on Steam’s desktop client, website, and mobile app. The exact position and wording of the wishlist control can change as Steam updates its interface, so use the control shown on the game’s current store page rather than following a fixed screen-coordinate description.
How to add a game to your Steam wishlist
- Sign in to Steam. Use the account whose email address or mobile app should receive notifications. If you have multiple accounts, check the account name before adding anything.
- Open the game’s Steam Store page. You can reach it through Steam search, a store link, a recommendation, or a game’s page in the client or app.
- Use the wishlist control on that page. Steam confirms that a game can be added from its game page. The current button location is not fixed across every layout, screen size, or device, so look for the page’s wishlist action near the purchase and follow controls.
- Confirm that the game appears in your wishlist. Open your wishlist from Steam’s store navigation or account area and search for the title. If it is already listed, you do not need to add it again.
Some store pages represent an unreleased title, an edition, or downloadable content rather than a standalone game. Read the page title and edition details before adding it so that your list reflects what you actually intend to track. If several editions are listed, add the edition whose price and contents you would evaluate at a sale.

Adding from the mobile app
The mobile app can be used to browse store pages, add titles, and receive mobile notifications. Because mobile navigation and labels can change independently of the desktop client, open the store page first and use the wishlist action that Steam currently presents there. After adding a title, check the wishlist view to make sure the action succeeded.
Turn on sale notifications
Adding a game and enabling notifications are related but separate tasks. A title can remain on your wishlist while you choose not to receive alerts, and you can change the alert channel later.

- Open Steam’s account notification controls. Start from the current account or notification settings page in the Steam client or website. Steam may revise the path and label names, so use the current controls rather than relying on an older menu path.
- Find wishlist or sale notifications. Look for controls covering games on your wishlist, store deals, or similar wording. The active page may show separate options for email and mobile notifications.
- Enable email, mobile alerts, or both. Email is useful when you prefer to review discounts later. Mobile alerts are more immediate and require the Steam app’s notifications to be allowed by your phone.
- Save or confirm the change if Steam asks. Some settings apply immediately; others may display a confirmation or account refresh. Reopen the settings page if you are unsure whether the selection was retained.
- Check the destination. For email, verify the address associated with the Steam account and check spam, promotions, or filtered folders. For mobile alerts, confirm that you are signed in to the same Steam account in the app and that the operating system permits Steam notifications.
Steam’s current notification page also says that you can opt out of email or turn off mobile notifications. Turning off a channel should not require deleting the games from your wishlist; it changes how Steam contacts you.
Choose between email and mobile alerts

This is a convenience comparison, not a guarantee about delivery speed. Steam does not promise that every qualifying message arrives instantly, and a sale alert can depend on the deal type and your region.

A short list is easy to scan. A long list becomes more useful when it reflects decisions you have already made about timing, genre, price, or who you might play with.
Create categories
Steam’s wishlist update describes custom categories and category-specific notification controls. If those controls are available in your current account, create groups with names that express an action or decision, such as:
- Buy on sale: games you would purchase when the price falls.
- Co-op: games you are considering with friends.
- For later: interesting titles that do not need an alert now.
- Watch the edition: games where you are waiting for a particular bundle or version.
Move each title into the category that matches your intention. Then use category-level notification settings, where offered, to avoid receiving alerts for games you are only casually researching. A category is an organizational tool; it does not change the store price or guarantee a different notification schedule.

Use wishlist search
The same wishlist update describes improved wishlist search. Search is useful when your list is too large for manual scrolling or when you remember only part of a title. Search for a distinctive word, check the matching edition, and open the store page before deciding whether the game still belongs on the list.
Watch for demo alerts
Steam’s wishlist feature update also describes demo alerts. If a developer makes a demo available and Steam exposes an alert for that title, the message can help you try the game before deciding whether to buy it. Demo availability is controlled by the developer and store listing, so the presence of a wishlist entry is not a promise that a demo will appear.
What kinds of sale messages should you expect?
The current Steam notification page names Daily Deal, Midweek Deal, and Weekend Deal alerts. These names describe the deal categories Steam currently highlights on that page; they are not a complete catalog of every promotion Steam may run.
- Daily Deal: a deal identified by Steam as a daily deal.
- Midweek Deal: a deal identified by Steam as a midweek deal.
- Weekend Deal: a deal identified by Steam as a weekend deal.
Steam’s page does not state that every discount in every country, currency, edition, or promotion produces a wishlist message. Prices can also vary by region and by the edition being sold. If you are waiting for a specific price, open the store page when you see an alert and verify the final price, edition, included content, and sale end time before buying.
Why a discount may not generate an alert
A notification may be absent for several different reasons:

- The promotion does not match a deal type covered by the current notification wording.
- The game is not actually on the account’s wishlist, or the wrong edition is listed.
- The email address, spam filter, phone permission, or mobile-app sign-in prevented you from seeing the message.
- The title is unavailable, restricted, or priced differently in your region.
- Steam changed its notification controls or the way a particular promotion is classified.
Do not assume that an alert is a price-monitoring guarantee. For important purchases, check your wishlist and the game’s store page directly during major sale periods.
Manage notifications without deleting your wishlist
Stop all email messages
Open the current Steam account notification controls and opt out of wishlist or sale email if that option is shown. Keep the games in your wishlist so you can continue to use the list manually. If Steam presents several email preferences, change only the preferences you no longer want and leave unrelated account messages unchanged.
Turn off mobile notifications
You can disable mobile notifications in Steam’s notification controls, and you may also need to change the phone’s app notification permission. If alerts continue after disabling the Steam setting, check the operating system’s notification panel and any focus, quiet-time, or battery-saving rule that may be allowing the app to post messages.
Reduce noise with categories
If your account exposes category-specific controls, leave alerts enabled for a focused category such as “Buy on sale” and disable them for “For later.” This keeps the wishlist as a complete catalogue while limiting messages to the titles most likely to lead to a purchase.
Privacy and developer visibility
A Steam Community announcement dated September 29, 2023 explains that a wishlisted game can lead to release-day and discount emails as well as developer news. The same announcement says developers see aggregate wishlist totals rather than the user’s email address or account name, and states: “The developer will know nothing about players who added the game to the wishlist.” That is an explanation in a community post on the Craftomation 101 Steam Community page, not a replacement for Steam’s current privacy policy or account settings.

Use Steam’s own account controls for the choices that affect your messages and privacy. A wishlist entry can be visible as part of Steam’s platform data and aggregate reporting without exposing your email address to a developer, but the community explanation should not be read as a promise about every future feature or data practice.
What changed over time?
Valve’s March 15, 2016 email-notification update described broader discount coverage, including Weeklong Deals and custom-configured discounts, along with more email preference options. That announcement documents how the system worked at that time. It should not be used as proof that today’s settings have the same labels, deal coverage, or menu layout.
For current behavior, follow the notification controls shown in your account and the deal categories named on Steam’s present notification page. Older instructions that mention a particular checkbox or a long list of promotion types may no longer match what you see.

Troubleshoot missing Steam wishlist alerts
Nothing arrives by email
- Open the wishlist and confirm the title is still listed on the correct Steam account.
- Return to the account notification controls and confirm wishlist or sale email is enabled.
- Check the email address associated with the account.
- Search the mailbox for Steam and inspect spam, junk, promotions, quarantine, and automatic filters.
- Check the game’s store page and the sale’s deal type. The promotion may not be one of the deal categories currently covered by Steam’s notification wording.
- If the settings appear correct, wait for another qualifying promotion rather than assuming that every discount triggers a message.
Nothing appears on the phone
- Confirm the Steam mobile app is signed in to the same account that owns the wishlist.
- Enable wishlist or sale notifications in Steam’s current account controls.
- Allow notifications for Steam in the phone’s operating-system settings.
- Review focus, do-not-disturb, battery-saving, and background-data rules that can silence or delay app alerts.
- Open the app and refresh the wishlist to verify that it contains the expected games.
The wishlist contains the wrong item
Open the wishlist, identify the unwanted title or edition, and use the current remove or wishlist control shown for that entry. Then search for the correct store page and add it. Editions can have separate pages and prices, so verify the product name before relying on a future alert.
The wishlist is too cluttered
Use search to find titles, create categories if your account offers them, and remove games that no longer interest you. Keep a small category for titles you would genuinely buy during a sale; this makes category-specific alerts easier to manage.
A sale ended before you acted
Steam’s notification feature is not described as a reservation or price lock. Open the store page from the message, confirm whether the discount is still active, and check the sale’s stated end time. If it has ended, leave the game on the wishlist if you still want to watch for a future qualifying promotion.
A practical setup that stays manageable
- Add selectively. Put a game on the wishlist only when you would realistically consider buying or playing it.
- Sort immediately. Assign it to a category such as “Buy on sale,” “Co-op,” or “For later” when categories are available.
- Choose one primary channel. Start with email for low interruption or mobile alerts for a more immediate reminder; add the second channel only if you need redundancy.
- Review the list periodically. Use wishlist search and open old entries to check that the title, edition, and your interest are still correct.
- Verify before purchasing. Follow the alert to the store page and check the current price, edition, content, region, and sale end time.
- Adjust instead of abandoning the list. If notifications become noisy, disable one channel or narrow category alerts rather than deleting every entry.
This workflow separates three decisions that are often confused: whether to remember a game, whether to receive a message, and whether to buy at the current price. Steam’s wishlist handles the first, its notification controls handle the second, and the store page supplies the information needed for the third.
