A strong social media plan in 2026 starts with a business outcome and a clearly defined audience—not a list of platforms or a posting quota. Choose a manageable set of channels, create content suited to each one, and decide in advance how you will judge results. Short-form video, creators, and AI are worth evaluating, but none guarantees sales or makes sense for every team.

How do I create a social media strategy for my business?

Work through these decisions before building a content calendar. The order matters: your goal and audience should shape the channels and content, rather than the other way around.

  1. Define the audience. Identify whom you need to reach, what they care about, and where they are likely to discover, discuss, or evaluate products. Consider geography as well as demographics; a platform’s popularity in one market does not establish that your customers use it in another.
  2. Choose one primary outcome for each campaign. Be specific about whether you want awareness, consideration, leads, purchases, customer support, or retention. A campaign can have supporting indicators, but one clear primary outcome makes it easier to interpret results.
  3. Select platforms that fit both the audience and the work. Weigh audience presence, goal, format, production effort, measurement options, discovery and commerce features, and the team’s ability to publish and respond consistently.
  4. Plan content and measurement together. Choose the content format and call to action for the outcome, then define the indicators you will review. Set a baseline or comparison where possible, and record what you change when you test.

HubSpot’s 2026 Social Media Trends Report says 59% of surveyed social media teams cite increasing brand awareness as their number-one goal. That is a survey finding, not a requirement that awareness should be every company’s priority. Use your own business objective to set the goal. HubSpot’s 2026 Social Media Marketing Report also quotes consultant Denise Reid advising teams to agree on what they will measure before launching a campaign or building its calendar.

Which social media platforms should my small business use?

Start with the channels where your intended audience is reachable and where your team can make content that suits the platform. HubSpot’s 2026 strategy guide recommends that resource-limited teams concentrate on two to three platforms instead of trying to maintain every channel. Its platform descriptions are useful starting hypotheses, not a universal ranking; they draw on secondary sources and benchmarks.

Platform Potential fit in HubSpot’s 2026 guidance Questions to check before committing
LinkedIn B2B lead generation, thought leadership, and recruiting Can you reach the relevant decision-makers, and can your team provide useful professional content consistently?
Instagram Consumer discovery and commerce Does your audience use visual content to discover or assess products, and can you produce platform-suited creative?
TikTok Consumer discovery and commerce Does the audience and buying journey fit short-form video and creator-led discovery? Check the fit in your market rather than extrapolating from US survey data.
YouTube Long-form education and search Would customers benefit from demonstrations or deeper explanations, and can you support the production effort?
Facebook Community, local marketing, and advertising Is there an active local or customer community to serve, and can you manage interaction as well as publishing?

These are directional use cases, not claims that a platform will perform equally well for every business. Compare channels using your audience, geography, intended outcome, content capacity, and ability to measure the action you want. HubSpot’s 2026 social media strategy guide discusses platform selection in terms of audience presence, format alignment, and goals.

What should I post on social media in 2026?

Publish content that helps the intended audience and gives them a clear next step. That could mean an educational explanation, a product demonstration, a customer question answered, a community update, or an invitation to learn more. Adapt the opening, context, captions, format, and call to action for each channel; copying the same post everywhere does not ensure it will work equally well.

Test short-form video where it fits

HubSpot’s 2026 report says 60.1% of surveyed marketers use short-form video and 48.6% say it provides the highest ROI among content types. These are marketer-reported survey results, not a forecast for an individual brand. They make short-form video a sensible format to test when the audience, message, and team capacity support it—not a universal requirement or a reason to invest before validating the fit.

Favor useful, credible content over polish for its own sake

In the same HubSpot report, 77% of surveyed social media marketers say authenticity is more important than production value. Treat that as a reported marketer preference, not proof that quality is irrelevant. A clear, credible explanation can be more useful than elaborate production that obscures the point. Keep factual claims accurate and make the content feel appropriate to the channel and audience.

How should I work with creators?

Creators can provide context, demonstrate how a product is used, and help people evaluate recommendations. Before contracting anyone, agree on the campaign goal, deliverables, disclosure practices, usage rights, and measurement. The cited survey and platform sources do not establish legal requirements or a standard contract, so confirm applicable rules and terms for your jurisdiction and campaign rather than treating a general playbook as legal advice.

HubSpot reports that 60% of surveyed marketers plan to increase influencer investment in 2026. It also reports that mid-tier creators—defined in its report as those with 100,000–499,000 followers—had the best results among the creator tiers it compared, at 36.80%. These are HubSpot survey findings, not a guarantee that a particular creator, audience, or campaign will deliver the same result.

TikTok’s 2026 trend forecast cites its US 2024 Commerce Landscape Study, conducted with Ipsos: 81% of surveyed TikTok users said the platform provides a view into real-life product usage. This is a self-reported perception from a US study, not evidence of incremental sales for a particular business. Use it as context for why product demonstrations may matter to some users, not as a conversion forecast. TikTok’s 2026 trend forecast explains the study attribution.

How can I use AI without losing control of the work?

Use AI as workflow support—for example, to help develop or adapt draft ideas—while keeping a person accountable for accuracy, brand voice, privacy, and the final publication decision. HubSpot reports that 94% of surveyed social media marketers use AI in some workflow capacity. That figure describes reported use; it does not show that AI-generated content performs better.

Meta has also described AI-enabled advertising and ranking changes in its own systems, including results it attributes to Q4 2025 updates. Such company-reported platform results are specific to Meta’s systems and stated period; they do not establish that other platforms, or an individual advertiser, will see the same outcome. Meta’s 2026 account of AI and performance provides the company’s figures and context.

How do I measure social media marketing ROI?

Match the metric to the outcome chosen for the campaign. Reach and recall signals may help assess awareness; qualified visits, leads, and their progression through a pipeline are more relevant to demand; support teams can assess response quality and resolution; retention efforts need repeat-engagement or retention measures. Likes and views can be useful diagnostics, but they do not establish business impact without a connection to the goal.

  • For awareness: review relevant reach and recall signals over a defined period.
  • For demand: track qualified visits, leads, and progression toward the intended purchase or other conversion.
  • For customer support: examine response quality and whether issues are resolved.
  • For retention: look at repeat engagement or the retention measures your business already uses.

Compare like with like: the same platform, format, audience, geography, and period where possible. Run small, explicit tests, change one meaningful element at a time when practical, and record what changed. A result attributed to a platform’s own systems or a marketer survey is not an independent benchmark for your business. The cited sources do not establish a universal social posting cadence, a global platform ranking, or causal returns for an individual brand.

HubSpot’s 2026 Social Media Trends Report says 63% of surveyed marketing executives expect social media to play a more important role in 2026 than in 2025. That indicates reported executive expectations, not a measured outcome for every company. Meta separately reports that 75% of Instagram recommendations in the US came from original posts in Q4 2025; this is Meta’s own platform figure for that geography and quarter, not a result that should be generalized to other markets or advertisers. HubSpot’s 2026 Social Media Trends Report and Meta’s report on its 2026 systems state those figures.
