Yes—you can build a smart home security system with no required monthly software subscription. A local controller such as Home Assistant can connect compatible sensors and automate an alarm at home. The hardware still costs money, and remote access, camera storage, and professional monitoring are separate services that may be paid or unavailable in a local-only setup.
This is a practical system design, not a report of a specific installed build: no exact parts list, purchase prices, or test results are established here. The useful distinction is what keeps working locally, what needs the internet, and what kind of response the system can actually provide.
What “no subscription required” means
Home Assistant’s software has no required subscription. The project says, “There is no subscription to use it, and no features are locked behind a paywall.” That describes the software, not a complete security installation: you need hardware to run it, plus sensors and any alarm or camera equipment you choose. Home Assistant’s official FAQ also describes Home Assistant Cloud as an optional paid service.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A subscription-free system can alert you and sound a siren, but that is not the same as professional monitoring. The options described here do not establish emergency dispatch or a staffed response service. A phone notification or siren cannot guarantee that help will arrive.

How the system fits together
Build around the jobs you need rather than treating one hub or camera as a complete alarm system. A modular design separates the controller, detection, alarm actions, and video.
- Controller: Home Assistant runs on hardware in your home. Home Assistant Green is the project’s plug-and-play hub option; it is a controller, not a complete security kit. You can also use suitable existing hardware. The software is free, but the hardware is not. See the Home Assistant Green page.
- Detection: Door and window contact sensors can report openings; motion sensors can detect movement in chosen areas. Choose devices that work with your controller and the functions you need.
- Alarm and alerts: Automations can use sensor events to activate a compatible siren and send notifications. Local siren control and phone alerts have different dependencies: delivery to your phone can depend on your network, the phone’s connection, and the notification route.
- Video, if needed: Add cameras only after deciding whether you need live viewing, recording, or both—and where recordings should be stored. These are separate capabilities.
Choose a route that fits the home
| Route | Best fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Home Assistant Green with compatible local sensors | A new modular setup built around a central automation platform | Green is a plug-and-play controller; sensors and other equipment are separate. Check compatibility by exact device model and required function. Home Assistant Green; ZHA documentation. |
| Konnected wired-alarm retrofit | A home with existing wired door, window, or motion sensors, or siren circuits | Can reuse wired circuits and connect to Home Assistant over the local LAN. It depends on a supported smart-home platform for everyday monitoring and control; it is not a standalone day-to-day app. Konnected’s Home Assistant information; Konnected FAQ. |
| Reolink Argus 3E with Home Hub | Someone prioritizing a bundled camera and storage setup | Reolink advertises local microSD recording in this kit, alerts, and no monthly fees. It is a camera-and-storage route, not a complete Home Assistant sensor-and-alarm architecture. These are manufacturer claims, not independent performance findings. Reolink Argus 3E. |
| Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro | Someone wanting a camera with local-stream and NAS possibilities, plus hub features | Aqara advertises RTSP streaming and SMB NAS storage. Check configuration requirements and the boundaries of each service; the listed capabilities do not establish that every feature works without a cloud connection. These are manufacturer claims. Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro. |
These routes are not directly interchangeable: the first two center on sensors and automation, while the camera options focus on video and storage. The cited information does not establish total installed costs or comparative test performance.

What works when the internet is down?
Local communication and remote access are different things. Home Assistant says devices that communicate with it using local protocols—including Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, and ESPHome—do not need an internet connection to communicate locally. A sensor can therefore trigger an in-home automation during an internet outage if the controller, local network, and relevant devices remain powered and operating. Home Assistant explains the distinction in its internet and remote-access documentation.
That does not make every feature outage-proof. Cloud-only devices may be unreachable by their integrations when the internet is down. Remote access and delivery of a phone notification may also depend on internet connectivity or an optional service. A local alarm action is not proof that a remote alert was delivered.

Internet resilience also is not power or network resilience. A power cut, failed router, or local-network problem can interrupt parts of the system. A UPS or battery backup may be part of a resilience plan, but runtime depends on the actual equipment and configuration; no tested backup-power design or runtime is established here.
Check compatibility before buying sensors
“Works with Zigbee” alone does not guarantee that every feature of a device will appear in Home Assistant. The ZHA integration supports standard Zigbee device types, but Home Assistant does not publish an official device-by-device list guaranteeing out-of-the-box behavior. Manufacturers can use nonstandard features, and an integration may expose only some of a device’s functions.

- Identify the exact model and hardware revision. Similar product names do not establish identical integration behavior.
- Check the functions you need. Confirm that the sensor exposes the specific state or feature your automation depends on, rather than relying on a general protocol label.
- Review current device-specific documentation and community reports. Treat undocumented behavior as uncertain, not guaranteed.
- Plan a simple test before relying on it. Confirm that the event reaches Home Assistant and triggers the intended local action.
The ZHA documentation describes its supported device types and compatibility limits. Home Assistant’s HomeKit Device integration can expose alarm control panels and binary sensors such as motion, contact, smoke, and carbon monoxide sensors when the device provides them; pairing still does not guarantee entities for every function.

Can you reuse wired alarm sensors?
Often, a wired-alarm retrofit is an option if the home already has suitable door, window, motion, or siren circuits. Konnected describes products that connect existing wired circuits to smart-home platforms, including Home Assistant over the local LAN. Check the retrofit product’s model and installation requirements against the existing panel and wiring before proceeding.

Konnected says its system relies on a supported smart-home platform for everyday monitoring and control rather than providing a standalone day-to-day app. Its setup information distinguishes Home Assistant’s local-LAN connection from SmartThings integration through Konnected Cloud. Do not assume every platform connection has the same local behavior. See Konnected’s Home Assistant information and its FAQ.
Decide what “local video” actually includes
Local video can mean live streaming, recording to a memory card, or storing footage on a network-attached storage device. One does not automatically imply the others, and local storage does not establish how long recordings will be retained.
- Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro: Aqara advertises RTSP local streaming and SMB NAS storage. Confirm what configuration is required and which camera functions remain available without cloud services on the product’s official product page.
- Reolink Argus 3E with Home Hub: Reolink advertises local microSD recording for the kit on its product page. That is a vendor-listed capability, not a verified retention period or independent assessment.
For either route, check recording location, storage capacity, access method, and whether the features you care about require an account or internet connection. The cited product information does not establish a universal retention time.
Set expectations for alerts and response
A local automation can activate an in-home siren when a compatible sensor reports an event. A phone notification is a separate path: the event must be processed, the notification service must be available, and the phone must be able to receive it. The available product and documentation claims do not validate delivery under every internet, power, or network failure.
Most importantly, self-monitoring is not professional monitoring. A siren and an alert give you information and an audible warning; they do not themselves contact emergency services or guarantee a response. If emergency dispatch is a requirement, verify that a separately offered service explicitly includes it and understand its terms.
