Build a small, focused site that helps a recruiter or hiring manager assess your work: a home page, a few relevant projects, and an About/Contact page with a current résumé and a working way to reach you. You do not need a custom design or a complete archive of your career. Choose a publishing method you can maintain, explain your contribution and results honestly, and check the site on a phone before sharing it.
Start with the role you want next
Before choosing a template or collecting work, decide what role you are pursuing and who is likely to review the site. A portfolio should make it easier for that person to judge skills relevant to the role—not simply document everything you have done.
Make a short list of the abilities you want to demonstrate, then look for examples that support them. A developer applying for frontend roles might emphasize interface work, accessibility decisions, and relevant code; someone seeking a product role might foreground problem framing, trade-offs, and outcomes. These are examples, not fixed rules: select work that reflects your target jobs and your actual experience.

Choose a few projects you can explain
Pick a handful of strong, relevant pieces rather than trying to publish every task from your career. Three to six samples is one practical suggestion, not a universal hiring standard. Use fewer if that is all you can present clearly.
- Include work only when you can explain your own contribution and why it demonstrates a skill relevant to the role.
- Link to a repository, live build, or other supporting material when the link is useful, safe to share, and still works.
- If prior-employer work cannot be shown, consider personal projects, freelance work, or a clearly labeled mock case study.
- Label self-directed exercises accurately; do not present a mock project as paid client or employer work.
For employer projects, check applicable agreements and ask for permission where needed. Do not publish confidential details, sensitive data, or materials you are not allowed to share. The fact that you worked on something does not by itself establish that you may publish it. GitHub also cautions users not to put sensitive data on Pages: GitHub Pages guidance.

Write each project as a compact case study
Give a reviewer enough context to understand the work without making them reconstruct it from screenshots or code. A short, repeatable structure works well:

- Your role: State what you personally owned. Distinguish your work from the team’s work.
- How you approached it: Explain relevant decisions, tools, constraints, or process. Focus on choices that show how you work.
- What changed: Give the outcome, impact, or lesson. Include numbers only when you can substantiate them and explain what they measure.
For example, rather than writing only “Built a dashboard,” explain what users needed, which part you implemented, a consequential design or technical decision, and what the finished work enabled. If you cannot share a result or project detail, say so briefly and describe your contribution at an appropriate level instead of revealing restricted information.

Build the minimum useful site
A first version can be three simple sections. You can make these separate pages or sections on one page; choose the format your publishing tool handles well.
Home
- Your name and the role or specialty you are pursuing.
- A one-sentence introduction that says what kind of work you do.
- A clear link to your selected projects.
Projects
- A small selection of case studies with your role and the project context.
- Working links to code, a live build, or other relevant detail when sharing them is appropriate.
About and contact
- A brief professional bio focused on relevant experience.
- A link to your current résumé or CV.
- A visible contact route, such as a professional email address, and relevant professional profiles.
Keep the first version direct. Add sections only when they answer a real question a reviewer may have; a complicated navigation system is not a prerequisite for a useful portfolio.

Choose a publishing route you can maintain
There is no single best platform for every field or person. Compare options by your comfort with code, time to publish, design flexibility, ongoing cost, and how easily you will be able to update the site. Platform features, free tiers, and prices can change, so check the current terms before committing.

For a template route, Fidelity Careers points to WordPress.com and Google Sites as free or low-cost starting options; verify their current plans and terms. Google’s instructions say a newly published Google Sites page receives a sites.google.com address. Using a work or school account to create a custom web address may require administrator access. If you choose GitHub Pages, consult the GitHub Pages documentation for current setup steps and account requirements.

Publish and check the site before sharing it
- Preview every page and proofread names, dates, project descriptions, and links.
- Open every navigation, project, résumé, and profile link; fix broken or private links.
- Check the site on a phone as well as a desktop. Confirm that text is readable and contact details are easy to find.
- Make sure the résumé is current and that its claims match the portfolio.
- Test the contact route, then add the portfolio link to applications where it supports your candidacy.
Keep the site current as your target role or work changes. You do not need to add new material on a schedule; remove or revise anything that is outdated, inaccurate, or no longer relevant.
