The reliable way to keep an app and its backend in sync is to make their boundary an explicit, versioned contract with one authoritative owner. Pin the exact contract artifact in every independently released consumer, generate types or clients from it when practical, and make CI check both compatibility and the real provider implementation.
A useful contract describes more than fields and data types. It records validation, errors, side effects, retry and idempotency behavior, ordering, timeouts, examples, deprecation rules, and the tests that prove both sides conform. That turns an informal promise into an agreement that can survive parallel development and separate deployments.
What a shared app contract actually is
A shared contract defines what one component may send across a boundary, what the other component returns, and which observable behaviors are guaranteed. The boundary might be an HTTP API used by a mobile app, a GraphQL interface, a protobuf message exchanged by services, or a small library called by another package.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The contract is not the provider’s internal design. A database table, private class, or implementation detail belongs to the component that owns it. The contract should expose only obligations that a consumer can rely on and that a provider must preserve while the implementation changes.

Structure and behavior belong together
A schema can say that a response contains status and items, but it may not say whether an invalid status produces a 400 response, whether an omitted field receives a default, or whether retrying a request creates a second charge. Those behavioral details are part of the agreement whenever they affect a consumer.
- Inputs: required and optional fields, accepted formats, ranges, enumerations, authentication context, and validation rules.
- Outputs: success payloads, status codes, headers, nullability, pagination, and ordering.
- Failures: error shape, error codes, retryable versus permanent failures, and rate or size limits that consumers must handle.
- Effects: writes, events, notifications, duplicate-request behavior, idempotency keys, and transaction boundaries that are externally visible.
- Timing: relevant timeout expectations, asynchronous completion, polling behavior, and eventual-consistency qualifications.
- Lifecycle: versioning, compatibility rules, deprecation notices, support windows, examples, and the verification process.
Do not document guarantees that the provider cannot test. A short, precise contract is safer than an exhaustive document containing promises nobody verifies.
Choose the smallest suitable contract format
Use a format that matches the interaction rather than adopting a registry or schema language by default. A machine-readable artifact is valuable when tools can lint it, generate code from it, or use it in compatibility checks; a small internal interface may only need a reviewed signature and behavioral documentation.
| Interaction | Suitable artifact | What it can support | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public or internal HTTP API | OpenAPI document | Request and response schemas, status codes, examples, generated clients, validation and linting | Describe side effects, retries, authentication failures and ordering separately when the schema cannot express them. |
| GraphQL service | GraphQL schema | Types, fields, arguments, nullability and introspection-based tooling | Operational behavior such as resolver side effects, timeout policy and retry safety still needs documentation and tests. |
| Protobuf-based communication | .proto definitions |
Wire messages, generated language bindings and field-number compatibility rules | Wire compatibility does not automatically guarantee compatibility of descriptors, language grammar, generated code or runtime APIs. |
| Small library in one codebase | Documented signatures plus behavior tests | Compile-time checks, examples, mocks and focused tests without a separate registry | Keep the single source of truth in the repository; avoid maintaining a second copy solely for appearance. |
For a contract shared across repositories, publish an immutable package or artifact that consumers can pin. For a single repository, have both sides reference the same file or module. A separate contract registry becomes useful when many independently released services need a common place for versions and verification results, but it is not a prerequisite for a two-component interface.
Make ownership and authority explicit
Assign one owner for each interface, normally the component that exposes it. Consumers should participate in design and review because they bear the cost of changes, but there must be one place where an approved definition lives. Without an owner, two teams can each make a reasonable edit and leave the system with two incompatible truths.

When app and service share one repository
- Put the contract in a clearly named directory or package owned by the provider team.
- Import that artifact directly from both provider and app code, or generate both sides from it during the build.
- Require contract changes to receive review from the provider owner and affected consumers.
- Fail the build if generated files differ from the committed artifact or if a consumer uses an unapproved duplicate.
Keeping one file in one repository removes publication latency, but it does not remove the need for compatibility review. The app may still be deployed before the service or vice versa.
When repositories or release schedules are separate
- Publish a versioned contract package or artifact from the authoritative repository.
- Pin an exact version or revision in every consumer; do not resolve an unbounded
latestreference in production builds. - If a copy must be synchronized into a consumer repository, record its source and exact revision and treat the copy as read-only.
- Propose edits at the authority, review the update, then deliberately adopt the new revision in each consumer.
A pinned artifact identifies what a consumer compiled or tested against. It does not prove that the deployed provider still serves that contract, so deployment records and provider verification are also required.
Build the contract in a deliberate sequence
The following sequence works for a new boundary and for an existing interface that has drifted.
- Map the boundary and consumers. List every app, service, job, SDK and test that sends or receives the interaction. Include rarely used administrative or migration clients; they often block apparently safe changes.
- Select the smallest suitable artifact. Choose OpenAPI, GraphQL schema, protobuf, or documented signatures according to the protocol. Add behavioral clauses where the format cannot express them.
- Name the owner and location. Record the authoritative repository or package, the contact or team responsible for approvals, and the process for emergency fixes.
- Define versions and compatibility. State how versions are identified, which changes are additive, which are breaking, how long older consumers are supported, and how deprecations are announced.
- Agree before parallel implementation. Consumers and provider review examples, errors, edge cases and side effects before writing independent implementations. Resolve ambiguity in the artifact, not in private chat messages.
- Publish and pin one exact revision. Make the chosen revision reproducible in local builds, CI and release manifests. Record which provider and consumer versions were verified together.
- Automate conformance checks. Add linting, generated-output checks, consumer tests, provider verification and integration checks to CI. Review every contract update before consumers adopt it.
This order prevents a common failure mode: two teams generate code from different interpretations, discover the mismatch only after deployment, and then argue about which implementation is correct.
Generate code, but verify the real implementation
When the chosen format supports generation, derive client bindings, payload types, validators or server stubs from the contract. Generated code removes hand-copied field names and gives compilers a chance to catch mismatches. AWS Well-Architected Framework guidance states: “Developers can catch potential issues early in the development process with type checking during compilation to verify that requests and responses follow the API contract and required fields are present.”

Generation is alignment, not proof. A generated client can still call an endpoint that the deployed service does not expose, and a provider can return a value that technically matches a type while violating a retry or side-effect promise.

Checks worth placing in the build
- Lint the contract for invalid or ambiguous definitions.
- Regenerate clients and types, then fail if the generated diff is not committed or reproducible.
- Compile every consumer against the exact pinned artifact.
- Validate representative payloads, including malformed, missing, empty and boundary values.
- Generate mocks only for fast unit tests, and label them clearly as non-provider tests.
- Run integration checks against the actual provider before release or deployment.
Keep generated output disposable where possible: store the source contract and generation configuration as the reviewed inputs, and make the same tool version available in CI so developers do not produce inconsistent code.
Use consumer expectations and provider verification together
Consumer-driven contract testing is useful when an app depends on a service owned by another team. In the documented Pact workflow, the consumer test records expected requests and responses as a contract, publishes it, and makes it available to the provider. The provider retrieves that contract, verifies the real implementation, publishes the verification result, and uses those results to determine which consumer and provider versions can safely be deployed together. A Pact Broker centralizes contracts and verification information; it can be self-hosted, while managed PactFlow is an alternative.
The key distinction is between what the consumer expects and what the provider actually does:
- A consumer test against a mock proves that the app handles the expectation it recorded.
- Provider verification proves that the deployed or built provider satisfies that expectation.
- Integration validation exercises transport, authentication, serialization, persistence and other behavior that a unit mock omits.
Negative cases deserve explicit tests. Verify unknown enum values, missing required fields, invalid authentication, duplicate requests, timeouts, partial failures and an empty result set when those cases affect app behavior. A green happy-path mock test is not evidence that the provider handles those cases correctly.

Design a CI pipeline that catches drift before release
A practical pipeline can be split into fast checks and environment-dependent checks:
- Contract lint: reject malformed documents, undocumented breaking edits or inconsistent naming.
- Generation check: regenerate clients, types and validators and compare the result with the repository state.
- Consumer tests: record the requests and responses the app requires, including negative cases and important headers.
- Provider verification: run those expectations against the real provider build or a controlled deployed instance.
- Compatibility matrix: test the provider against every consumer version still inside its support window, and test a new consumer against the provider versions it may meet during rollout.
- Integration validation: exercise network transport, authentication, serialization, data effects and timeout behavior.
- Publication and deployment gate: publish the contract and verification result, then allow deployment only when the selected consumer/provider pair is verified.
Store the contract revision, consumer build identifier, provider build identifier and verification timestamp with the release record. If a production incident appears later, you can identify the exact agreement each deployment claimed to support instead of reconstructing it from source branches.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Evolve the contract without surprising consumers
Write down the compatibility policy before the first breaking change. Classify each edit as additive, breaking or deprecated, and state the support window for older consumers. Test the versions that remain in use rather than assuming that a change safe for one format is safe for all formats.
| Change type | Typical consumer risk | Safer handling |
|---|---|---|
| Add an optional response field | Usually low for tolerant clients, but clients that reject unknown fields may fail. | Document the field, test old consumers, and avoid making it required for existing requests. |
| Add a required request field | Existing consumers may be rejected immediately. | Use an optional field or default where the format and behavior permit it; otherwise introduce a new version or compatibility facade. |
| Rename or remove a field | Direct break for consumers that read or send the old name. | Support both forms during a stated deprecation window, then remove only after usage and verification show that no supported consumer depends on the old form. |
| Change an enum or error meaning | Clients may mis-handle an unfamiliar value or retry a permanent failure. | Document unknown-value behavior and add tests for every affected branch. |
| Change side effects or retry safety | Duplicate writes, lost updates or unexpected user-visible actions. | Treat it as behavioral breaking change even when the schema is unchanged; update idempotency, retry and integration tests. |
AWS guidance describes API extension with optional fields or defaults as one way to preserve compatibility, and identifies versioning or a facade as ways to absorb changes. Those are strategies, not universal rules: the actual format, client behavior and deployment order determine whether an edit is safe.

Protocol Buffers documentation states that its binary wire format does not change and that old and new messages can be read across versions when the supported .proto syntax is used. The same documentation separately notes that descriptors, language grammar, generated code and runtime APIs can evolve. Therefore, a wire-compatible message does not guarantee that every language toolchain or generated client remains compatible.

The documentation reports quarterly releases, targets major breaking releases for the first quarter, and says support for the previous major release ends four quarters after a new major release. Treat those statements as the documented release policy and check the current language-specific support table before selecting a compiler, runtime or generated-code version.
Coordinate rollout and version support
Most breaking changes become manageable when deployment is staged so that old and new participants overlap. A typical sequence is:
- Release a provider that can understand the old and new representations.
- Deploy the new consumer while it still works with the old provider behavior.
- Observe verification and production telemetry for both paths.
- Stop issuing the old representation from consumers and confirm that supported clients have migrated.
- Remove the compatibility path only after the published deprecation window ends and the owner approves the removal.
Maintain a support matrix rather than relying on memory. For example:
Recommended Free Tools
| Consumer | Contract revision | Provider versions verified | Deployment status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile app 8.x | contract 3.2 | service 12.4 and 12.5 | supported during migration |
| Web app 2026.10 | contract 4.0 | service 12.5 | requires new provider behavior |
| Data job 5.x | contract 2.7 | service 11.9 through 12.5 | legacy support until stated date |
The values in such a matrix are operational records, not guesses. Update them when verification runs and remove rows only through the deprecation process.
Diagnose common synchronization failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| The app compiles but receives a 404 or 415 response. | Generated code came from a contract revision that the deployed provider does not support, or content negotiation differs. | Compare the pinned consumer revision with the provider’s deployed revision, verify route and media-type expectations, then run provider verification against the deployment. |
| Only production fails after a harmless-looking field addition. | A consumer rejects unknown fields or a proxy validates responses more strictly than local mocks. | Test old consumers with the real transport path and document unknown-field handling before re-releasing. |
| Retries create duplicate records. | Idempotency or side-effect behavior was absent from the contract. | Define an idempotency key or duplicate-detection rule, test timeout and retry sequences, and classify the behavior change as breaking. |
| Consumer tests pass while integration tests fail. | The mock captured expectations but the provider implementation, authentication, serialization or persistence differs. | Keep the consumer contract, add provider verification and inspect the first divergent request, response or side effect. |
| Two repositories contain conflicting schemas. | A copied artifact was edited locally or a consumer silently synchronized to latest. | Restore the copy from its recorded source revision, make it read-only, pin the dependency and submit future edits to the authoritative owner. |
| A protobuf payload is readable but a build breaks. | Wire compatibility was mistaken for compatibility of the compiler, generated code or runtime API. | Check the language-specific support table, align toolchain versions and test generated artifacts separately from wire decoding. |
Governance that keeps the agreement useful
Keep a short decision record beside the contract explaining ownership, version policy, compatibility categories, support duration and the required checks. Link each change review to the affected consumer versions and verification results. Require an explicit migration owner for every deprecation; otherwise an old client can remain indefinitely and prevent cleanup.
- Prefer examples that can be executed as tests over prose-only examples.
- Review error and timeout behavior with the same seriousness as successful payloads.
- Keep contract revisions immutable after publication; issue a new revision for a changed artifact.
- Separate source contracts from generated output, and make generation reproducible.
- Record provider verification against the real implementation, not only a mock.
- Use a broker or registry when many teams need shared verification history, but do not add one where a versioned package and CI provide sufficient control.
What “in sync” should mean at release time
Synchronization is not the absence of a diff between two files. At release time, it means the app was built against a known contract revision, the provider was verified against the same observable obligations, compatibility with supported versions was checked, and the deployment record identifies exactly what was tested. If any of those facts is unknown, the components may happen to work together, but the relationship is not controlled.
Start with one boundary, make its authority and version visible, and automate the checks that matter for its real behavior. Expand the approach to other interfaces only after the first contract has a clear owner, a reproducible artifact and a verification result that both teams trust.
