A WordPress site survives a traffic spike when most requests are served before they reach PHP and MySQL. Put a CDN in front of the site, add server-level full-page caching, use persistent object caching for dynamic requests, provision enough PHP workers, keep the database lean, and test the complete path before a launch. Autoscaling is useful insurance, but it cannot compensate for an uncached or inefficient application.
What a spike-ready WordPress architecture looks like
A visitor request should pass through the cheapest, fastest layer that can answer it correctly. The usual order is edge cache, origin page cache, object cache, PHP application code, and database. Each layer removes work from the next one.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Layer | Primary job | Requests it helps most | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| CDN | Serve static files and eligible pages from edge locations | Anonymous visitors, images, scripts, stylesheets and cacheable HTML | It must bypass personalized or stateful responses |
| Server-level full-page cache | Return a complete HTML response without running WordPress | Anonymous page views at the origin | Logged-in, cart and other personalized pages need exclusions |
| Persistent object cache | Reuse database query results and computed objects between requests | Logged-in users, filters, forums, dashboards and other dynamic traffic | It is separate from page caching and can add overhead when misused |
| PHP workers | Execute uncached WordPress requests | Checkout, login, API calls and cache misses | Every request holds a worker while it runs |
| Database | Provide authoritative content and transactional data | All requests that cannot use a cache | Slow queries and bloated tables become more damaging during a surge |
| Autoscaling | Add capacity when demand rises | Short, unpredictable bursts | It does not fix poor cache hit rates or inefficient queries |
Think of caching as a request-routing policy, not a single switch. A public article can often be cached for many visitors, while a shopping cart, account page or administrator screen must be generated for the current user.
Measure the workload before choosing capacity
Separate cacheable and uncacheable traffic
List the URLs and users that must be fresh or personalized. Typical cacheable traffic includes public posts, landing pages, category pages and static assets. Typical uncacheable traffic includes logged-in views, carts, checkout, account pages, search results that depend on a user, WordPress administration and write-heavy API requests.

Record requests per second, response time, error rate, PHP worker utilization, CPU, memory, database latency, cache-hit ratios and queueing. Monthly visits are not a capacity number by themselves: a site can receive the same monthly total as another site but have a much sharper peak.
Use worker math as a sanity check
An uncached request occupies a PHP worker for its entire execution time. A simple upper-bound estimate is:
approximate requests per second = available PHP workers ÷ average uncached response time in seconds
For example, a vendor guide’s illustrative calculation uses four workers and a 400-millisecond average response: 4 ÷ 0.4 is about 10 requests per second before queueing. This is a planning example, not a benchmark; real capacity is lower when requests have different runtimes, CPU contention, database waits or background work.
Model the event, not the average day
Use the expected launch or sale pattern: a gradual ramp, a sudden burst, sustained demand, and the mix of anonymous, logged-in and transactional requests. One vendor example describes a store rising from 20,000 to 120,000 monthly visits during a holiday sale and pairing four to eight PHP workers with object caching and burstable CPU. Treat that range as vendor guidance, not a universal sizing rule.

Put a CDN in front of the origin
The CDN should be the first line of defence because it can answer repeated requests without opening a connection to the WordPress server. A vendor arithmetic example says that if the CDN serves 90% of a 100,000-visitor spike, roughly 10,000 requests reach the origin instead of all 100,000. The percentage is an illustrative assumption, not a guaranteed result; your cache rules, content mix and purge behavior determine the actual hit rate.
Configure the edge safely
- Point the site’s DNS or proxy configuration at the CDN and verify that the origin remains reachable only through the intended path.
- Enable edge caching for static assets such as images, CSS, JavaScript and fonts. Use long-lived, versioned filenames so an updated asset can be fetched without purging every object.
- Cache public HTML only when the response is identical for all visitors. Exclude administrator URLs, login endpoints, preview links, checkout, cart, account pages and any response carrying a user-specific cookie.
- Honor application cache headers where possible, and define explicit purge rules for publishing, editing and product changes.
- Test both a first request and a repeat request. Confirm that the repeat is served from the edge and that a logged-in session never receives another visitor’s cached response.
Do not measure CDN success only by page speed. Watch origin request rate, cache-hit ratio, stale-content incidents and the percentage of requests that bypass the edge for legitimate reasons.
Add server-level full-page caching at the origin
When a request misses the CDN, a server-level page cache can return a complete HTML document without booting WordPress. Managed environments commonly implement this with Varnish or an Nginx FastCGI cache; this is generally faster and less resource-intensive than rebuilding a page through a PHP plugin on every request.
Define cache keys and exclusions
- Key public pages by URL and the factors that genuinely change their output, such as language or device class if your site varies on those dimensions.
- Bypass the cache for authenticated sessions, carts, checkout, account pages, previews, comment submissions and other state-changing requests.
- Remove or normalize tracking parameters when they do not change the page. Otherwise, every campaign URL can create a separate cache object.
- Set a deliberate time-to-live and purge on content changes. A short lifetime reduces staleness but increases origin work; a long lifetime improves absorption but requires reliable invalidation.
Use a plugin only when the server layer is unavailable
For a site already under load, WordPress documentation identifies page-caching plugins such as W3 Total Cache, WP Super Cache and Cache Enabler as options. They can help, but they still run inside the application environment and compete for PHP, memory and disk resources. If the host supplies a reverse-proxy cache, avoid stacking several page caches until you have verified which layer owns headers, purges and exclusions.
Install persistent object caching for dynamic requests
Understand what WordPress caches by default
The WordPress object cache is non-persistent by default: cached objects live in memory only for the duration of one request. A value calculated during one page load is normally gone before the next request begins. Defining WP_CACHE alone does not change that behavior; persistence comes from a cache plugin or drop-in connected to a backend.

Persistent object caching is different from full-page caching. It stores individual objects and query results so WordPress can assemble a response with fewer database operations. It does not return a finished HTML page by itself.
Choose a backend that the host actually provides
| Backend | Requirement | Useful fit | Operational note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redis | A reachable Redis server and a compatible WordPress object-cache plugin | Sites with substantial dynamic traffic, replication or clustered deployments | The Redis Object Cache plugin supports Predis, PhpRedis, Relay, replication, sentinels, clustering and WP-CLI, subject to the environment you run it in |
| Memcached | A memcached server plus the PHP memcache or Memcached extension | Simple distributed object caching where the host supplies the service | Confirm the PHP extension and eviction policy before production use |
| SQLite-based object cache | The host’s SQLite3 extension and a compatible plugin | A fallback when Redis and Memcached are unavailable | This option is mentioned in a user-contributed documentation comment, not as official WordPress guidance; test contention and durability carefully |
Install and verify the drop-in
- Ask the host whether Redis or Memcached is included, whether it is isolated per site, and which PHP extension is enabled.
- Install one maintained persistent object-cache plugin, activate it, and verify that it creates the expected object-cache drop-in.
- Confirm connectivity from WordPress and check hit, miss, eviction and connection-error metrics.
- Exercise anonymous, logged-in, search, filter, cart and administration workflows. A page cache may hide object-cache problems on public URLs.
- Document how to flush the cache safely. A flush should remove reusable data, not delete authoritative posts, orders or user records.
The WordPress Cache documentation treats object-cache data as safe to lose: if the cache is corrupted, the application should continue and regenerate values. Design fail-open behavior so a Redis outage degrades to database work rather than taking the site offline.
Do not assume more cache calls always mean more speed
The WP Redis plugin’s FAQ warns that a page load making 2,000 Redis calls can take about two seconds in object-cache transactions. That figure is a warning example, not a benchmark for every server. Profile query counts and latency; consolidate repeated calls and remove plugins that perform unnecessary work.
Use transients with the right expectation
The Transients API stores values in the options table by default. With a persistent object cache installed, transients can be served through that object cache and bypass the database. Treat transient values as disposable: code must be able to recreate them after expiration, eviction or a cache flush.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsProvision PHP workers without starving the server
Workers are the concurrency limit for uncached PHP requests. Too few workers create a queue even when CPU is idle; too many workers consume memory and can force swapping or database contention.

Tune from measurements
- Measure average and high-percentile PHP execution time separately for public cache misses, login, search, checkout and API requests.
- Watch active workers, waiting requests, worker restarts, memory per process and upstream timeout counts.
- Increase workers gradually while checking CPU, memory and database latency. Stop when queueing falls but the server remains within its memory and CPU budget.
- Move scheduled jobs and expensive maintenance tasks to system-level cron where appropriate so visitors do not trigger them during a request.
A worker increase cannot rescue a query that takes several seconds or a plugin that performs unbounded work. Fix the slow path first, then size concurrency for the remaining workload.
Keep the database predictable under load
Traffic spikes expose slow queries and bloated tables because every uncached request competes for the same database resources. Review slow-query logs, identify the plugins and screens responsible, and remove obsolete rows such as expired options, unnecessary revisions and abandoned temporary data only with a tested maintenance procedure.
Make maintenance routine
- Back up the database before cleanup and test restoring that backup.
- Schedule cleanup outside the busiest period, preferably through system-level cron rather than visitor-triggered jobs.
- Review autoloaded options and large tables for growth, but change them only after confirming what each plugin requires.
- Check query plans and indexes for the specific filters, joins and ordering used by your site.
- Separate reporting, imports and exports from the request path when possible.
Do not use a database flush as a cache flush. Object-cache entries can be regenerated; production data cannot be safely recreated from an emptied database.

Use autoscaling as a backstop
Autoscaling can add compute capacity during a surge, but it does not reduce the amount of work per request. If every request executes WordPress and performs several slow queries, autoscaling simply creates more copies of the bottleneck. Establish cache-hit and query targets first, then use autoscaling for the residual uncached load.
Billing depends on the hosting service and plan. Automatic scaling does not, by itself, tell you whether you pay per instance, per minute, for reserved capacity or under a separate burst allowance. Confirm the pricing and scale-in behavior before relying on it for a campaign.

Build the stack in a controlled sequence
- Inventory the site. List public, personalized and transactional URLs; identify plugins that add queries, scheduled work or external calls.
- Establish a baseline. Capture origin response time, PHP worker usage, database latency, error rate and current cache-hit ratios during normal traffic.
- Enable the CDN. Cache static assets first, then add carefully tested public-HTML rules and exclusions.
- Enable origin page caching. Choose Varnish or Nginx FastCGI cache when the host provides it; otherwise configure one page-cache plugin and verify purges.
- Install persistent object caching. Use the Redis or Memcached service supplied by the host, confirm the drop-in, and test cache failure behavior.
- Reduce uncached work. Fix slow queries, remove redundant plugins, optimize expensive filters and move scheduled maintenance out of visitor requests.
- Size PHP workers. Use measured execution times and memory limits, then test concurrency rather than guessing from monthly visits.
- Set scaling and upgrade procedures. Define who can increase resources, how billing is monitored and how to roll back a change.
- Run a staged load test. Warm and cold caches, anonymous and logged-in sessions, search, cart, checkout and administrative actions should all be represented.
- Write the launch runbook. Include purge commands, cache-flush procedures, database backup verification, alert thresholds, escalation contacts and a rollback plan.
Load-test the paths that can actually fail
Warm-cache test
Send repeated requests for the same public pages after the CDN and origin cache are warm. Confirm that origin request rate falls and that cache hits return the correct content after a publish and purge.

Dynamic-session test
Use separate sessions for login, account pages, search, filters, cart and checkout. These requests should bypass public page caches while still benefiting from object caching and adequate PHP workers.
Failure test
Temporarily make the object-cache service unavailable in a staging environment. WordPress should continue with regenerated data, and monitoring should show the increased database load. Also test a CDN or origin-cache purge failure so staff know how to restore fresh content manually.
Diagnose common spike failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Public pages time out while cache-hit ratio falls | CDN or origin cache bypass, purge storm or cache-key fragmentation | Inspect response headers and exclusions; restore a simple public-page rule before adding complexity |
| PHP workers stay at the limit | Too many uncached requests, slow code or insufficient workers | Separate cache misses from dynamic endpoints, profile execution time and check memory before raising the limit |
| CPU is moderate but requests queue | Workers are blocked on database or external I/O | Review database latency, slow queries and upstream calls rather than adding workers blindly |
| Logged-in pages remain slow while public pages are fast | Only page caching is configured | Verify persistent object caching, query volume and PHP capacity for authenticated paths |
| Content is stale after an edit | CDN and origin caches were not purged consistently | Trace the publish-to-purge path and test a single URL through every cache layer |
| Redis errors appear during a surge | Backend unavailable, connection saturation or excessive cache calls | Use the documented fail-open behavior, inspect connection and call counts, and reduce needless object-cache operations |
| Database latency rises after enabling object caching | Low hit rate, cache churn or a plugin making thousands of calls | Measure hits, misses, evictions and per-request call counts before deciding whether to retune or disable a feature |
What changes at very large scale
One 2026 vendor guide places roughly 500,000 to 5 million visits among the workloads where object caching, tuned PHP workers and a cleaned database become priorities, and recommends horizontal scaling, read replicas, intelligent edge purging and dedicated infrastructure for uncacheable requests beyond that range. Those thresholds are vendor opinion, not independent benchmarks or universal limits.

Quick Recap
Protect correctness while optimizing speed
- Never cache a response containing another user’s account data, cart contents, order details or security token.
- Use separate staging tests for cache headers, cookies, redirects, previews and logged-in sessions.
- Keep cache credentials and administrative purge endpoints protected.
- Make invalidation part of publishing and deployment, not an emergency step performed from memory.
- Document which data is authoritative and which data can be discarded and regenerated.
