A low-latency dictation pipeline captures microphone audio continuously, sends it in small, regular frames to a streaming recognizer, shows interim text while the speaker talks, and turns that text into stable segments when the recognizer detects an utterance boundary. To make it feel fast, reduce avoidable buffering without sacrificing recognition quality, and measure capture-to-interim and capture-to-final time in the environment where people will use it. There is no universal chunk size or guaranteed end-to-end latency.
What happens between speaking and seeing finalized text?
A streaming speech recognizer can receive audio as it is captured and return interim results before a person finishes an utterance. The application must then keep those changing results distinct from text that is final, detect when speech has ended, and reconcile completed segments in the correct order.
- Capture: Read microphone audio continuously and hand it off without blocking the capture path.
- Frame: Package the audio into small, regular chunks and preserve the actual audio metadata.
- Stream: Send each frame over the recognizer’s supported streaming connection.
- Render interim text: Display provisional recognition promptly, with a way to revise it.
- Detect the boundary: Use the recognizer’s endpointing behavior or an application-controlled setting to determine when an utterance has ended.
- Commit final text: Replace or reconcile provisional text with final results, preserving segment order.
Google Cloud documents bidirectional gRPC streaming with interim results. OpenAI documents WebSocket transcription sessions, audio-buffer events, and VAD-related events. These are examples of different provider interfaces, not interchangeable protocols or a universal API specification.
How should microphone audio be captured and prepared?
Keep capture independent from networking and display
Microphone capture should continue even if a network send or UI update takes longer than expected. Keep the capture callback lightweight; hand frames to downstream work through a safe queue or buffer instead of doing network or rendering work directly in the callback. If the interface needs to associate recognition events with the audio timeline, retain timestamps or sequence information. These are engineering implications of a streaming pipeline, not requirements prescribed by the providers cited here.

Prioritize clean input before adding processing
Google Cloud’s audio guidance recommends a close, well-positioned microphone and avoiding clipping and automatic gain control (AGC). It also says that noise-reduction processing before sending typically reduces recognition accuracy for its service. Treat this as Google-specific guidance: assess any digital signal processing (DSP) with the selected recognizer, representative speakers, and the actual acoustic environment rather than assuming preprocessing will help.
What frame size and audio format should the stream use?
Frames that are too long can add waiting time before audio is sent; very short frames can increase message overhead. The available service guidance gives useful starting points, but it does not establish one optimal setting across recognizers and deployments.
| Guidance | What it says | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud | Recommends a 100 ms frame size as a tradeoff between latency and efficiency. | Use this as a provider-specific starting point, then measure the application’s actual performance. |
| Amazon Web Services (AWS) | Recommends uniform 50–200 ms chunks when chunk size is configurable for streaming. | Keep frame durations consistent and test values that fit the chosen API and deployment. |
These are vendor recommendations, not measurements of dictation response time or universal defaults. Benchmark more than one setting: minimizing frame duration alone may trade increased message overhead for little user-visible improvement.

Send metadata that matches the audio
For Google Cloud, the guidance recommends 16,000 Hz where possible; if the capture source uses another rate, specify the source’s actual sample rate rather than resampling solely to reach 16,000 Hz. AWS calls for a correct sample rate and channel configuration, and recommends PCM when possible. Its cited streaming guidance describes PCM signed 16-bit little-endian, FLAC, and Ogg Opus as supported formats, with lossless PCM or FLAC recommended.
Those format details are provider-specific. Follow the current contract for the selected recognizer and accurately describe the audio actually sent, including sample rate, channel count, and encoding. The cited guidance does not establish a single format for every streaming service.
How should streaming transport fit into the pipeline?
Transport affects how audio and recognition events move between the application and service, but it does not by itself determine total dictation latency. Google Cloud documents streaming recognition over bidirectional gRPC. OpenAI’s guide describes a WebSocket-based Realtime transcription session, including audio-buffer append events and VAD-driven transcription events.

If an application needs to compare or change providers, a provider adapter can keep connection handling and event parsing separate from the transcript UI. Keep provider-specific audio requirements, connection lifecycle, and event semantics inside that adapter; do not assume that a partial result or utterance-boundary event has the same meaning across services.

How should interim text and final results be handled?
Interim text makes dictation visible before a complete utterance is available, but it should remain revisable. Do not append every partial result to the permanent transcript as though each were a new, final phrase: later recognition may revise provisional wording or provide a finalized segment.
Build the transcript state around the selected recognizer’s actual event model. Google documents results while audio is still being captured. OpenAI’s guide describes speech-start, speech-stop, committed-buffer, and completed-transcription events, with item identifiers that can help preserve order. Use the service’s documented identifiers and event sequence to decide what to update, what to commit, and where each completed segment belongs.

How does endpointing affect perceived latency?
Endpointing decides when the system treats speech as finished. Waiting for a pause can preserve natural thought groups but leaves the latest words unfinalized for longer. Ending too quickly can produce a final segment before the speaker has completed a phrase, splitting a thought or prompting corrections.
| Endpointing approach or example | Behavior described in the documentation | Design implication |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI server VAD example | Shows silence_duration_ms: 500 and prefix_padding_ms: 300. |
These are example configuration values, not evidence that those thresholds are best for dictation. |
| Google Cloud single-utterance mode | Ends after speech-end detection. | Test whether that behavior matches the application’s expected pause and segment boundaries. |
Tune endpointing with realistic speech, including natural pauses, the desired punctuation and segmentation, and the cost of a correction. A longer silence threshold can delay finalization; a shorter one can split thought groups. The cited examples do not establish the right threshold for a particular product.

Time from speech to visible text is not one number controlled by chunk size. A useful breakdown separates waiting introduced by frame buffering and endpointing from time spent sending audio over the network and processing it in the recognizer. The UI can add further delay if it handles events or renders updates slowly. The cited provider documentation describes streaming behavior and example settings, but does not guarantee end-to-end latency for a specific application.

- Capture to first interim: Measure from the relevant captured audio to the first provisional text shown to the user. This reveals how quickly live feedback appears.
- Capture to stable final: Measure from the relevant captured audio to text that the application treats as final. This includes the effect of endpointing and final-result processing.
- Revision or correction rate: Track how often interim wording changes, or users must correct finalized text. Faster provisional display is not useful if it produces a poor dictation experience.
Test with representative devices, networks, languages, and noise conditions. If reporting latency, state the test conditions and report percentile distributions rather than presenting an unqualified figure. This makes clear both how the system behaves for typical interactions and how often users encounter slower ones.
How should streaming recognizers be compared?
Choose against the application’s actual constraints, not a latency number copied from an example configuration. Compare the following for the intended deployment:
- Transport and client SDK fit, including the connection lifecycle.
- Interim and final event semantics, and what identifiers or ordering information are available.
- Accepted audio formats, sample rates, channel counts, and frame constraints.
- Endpointing controls and how they handle pauses and utterance boundaries.
- Supported languages and regional availability.
- Measured latency and recognition quality on the application’s vocabulary and real operating conditions.
- Operational cost and privacy requirements.
The cited official material supports comparing technical interfaces and input settings, but does not support ranking providers for measured dictation quality, cost, privacy suitability, or availability worldwide. Verify current API formats, limits, supported languages, and regions with the provider before implementation.
