A reliable automated-vulnerability-patching benchmark must test two things at once: whether a generated patch removes the exploitable condition and whether the software still behaves as intended. A reproducible vulnerable revision, a concrete trigger, a buildable environment, positive and regression tests, and transparent execution settings are the minimum foundation.

A proof-of-concept that no longer crashes is only one observation. The patch may suppress an assertion, disable a feature, corrupt valid inputs, or change unrelated behavior. The workflow below turns those risks into explicit dataset, validation, contamination-control, and reporting requirements.

What a reliable benchmark must prove

Define success as a conjunction, not a single test result. For each instance, an agent should receive a stated task context, modify a reproducible vulnerable checkout, produce a buildable patch, stop the vulnerability trigger, and preserve specified behavior. A benchmark that omits any of those dimensions measures something narrower than “automated vulnerability patching.”

Claim you want to measure Evidence the benchmark needs What a false positive looks like
The patch is applicable Patch application and a successful build in a fixed environment A patch is counted despite failing to compile or applying to the wrong revision
The reported vulnerability is removed The original exploit, crash input, or security trigger no longer succeeds The known PoC happens not to reach the vulnerable path
Normal behavior remains available Positive tests, regression tests, and, where practical, differential or fuzz testing The agent disables a parser, rejects all input, or removes a feature
The result generalizes beyond one input Multiple security tests or generated inputs appropriate to the vulnerability The patch special-cases one byte sequence or stack trace
The score is reproducible Published source revisions, containers, commands, settings, budgets, and failure rules Another team cannot recreate the task or determine why it failed

Historical developer patches are valuable reference points, but they are not the only acceptable implementations. Score a candidate against the security and behavioral contract, not textual similarity to one human patch.

1. Define the claim and target population

Specify the task input

Write down exactly what the agent sees. Possible settings include a full security advisory, a minimized bug report, a crash input and stack trace, a failing test, or repository context without an explicit vulnerability description. These settings demand different diagnosis skills; combining them under one score obscures what was actually measured.

Also state whether the agent may inspect commit history, search the network, use a debugger, run sanitizers or fuzzers, and modify tests. If a benchmark allows unrestricted history access for some instances but not others, record that distinction and score the groups separately.

Bound the population

Declare languages, repository types, vulnerability classes, and deployment assumptions. A benchmark focused on fuzzing-found C and C++ memory-safety issues cannot support conclusions about every security repair task. SEC-bench describes broader real-world software-security tasks, while AutoPatchBench intentionally targets fuzzing-found C/C++ repairs and PatchBench concentrates on patch validity and shallow-fix risks.

Set inclusion rules before selecting cases. For example, decide whether to include only vulnerabilities with an executable trigger, whether configuration-only flaws qualify, and how to handle issues requiring unavailable services or proprietary data. Publish the rules so exclusions are not made after seeing model results.

Define the unit of evaluation

Choose whether one instance is a vulnerability, a repository revision, or a task variant. If the same bug is presented with different information budgets, identify those as related variants rather than independent vulnerabilities. Prevent a large project with many nearly identical cases from dominating the aggregate score.

2. Assemble and curate benchmark instances

Use a complete instance record

A useful instance contains a verified vulnerable source revision, a concrete trigger or exploit, a fixed reference revision, build instructions, dependency versions, diagnostic artifacts, and tests that describe expected behavior. Preserve the exact source revision used to create the trigger; a moving branch is not a reproducible baseline.

For each case, verify the vulnerable state before releasing it. Run the trigger on a clean checkout, capture the expected failure and diagnostic output, then apply the reference fix and confirm that the trigger is removed. Build the fixed revision independently. Cases that cannot meet those checks should be rejected or labeled separately, not silently counted as agent failures.

Record curation outcomes

  • Trigger reproduces reliably on the stated platform and dependency versions.
  • Stack trace, sanitizer report, assertion, or other diagnostic artifact is saved when one is part of the task.
  • Vulnerable and reference-fixed revisions build with documented commands.
  • Expected behavior is described by executable tests or an explicit oracle.
  • Flaky crashes, missing diagnostics, broken builds, and underspecified outcomes are excluded or assigned a visible status.
  • Every exclusion has a reason and remains available in a curation log for audit.

Meta Engineering describes these checks while curating AutoPatchBench from ARVO. Meta reports 136 curated samples, with an AutoPatchBench-Lite subset of 113, covering 11 distinct crash types. The same description characterizes ARVO as containing more than 5,000 reproducible vulnerabilities across over 250 projects. Those are publisher-reported dataset descriptions, not an independent recount; publish the version and retrieval date alongside any such figures.

Include enough project context

A trigger alone is not a repair task. Include the modules, build scripts, test fixtures, and configuration needed to understand the data flow around the flaw. At the same time, avoid shipping an answer key in the task prompt. Separate agent-visible files from evaluator-only material such as hidden regression tests and the reference patch.

3. Validate more than crash disappearance

Use a layered acceptance protocol. A patch should advance through each layer; record the first failing layer and continue collecting diagnostics where feasible.

  1. Apply and build. Apply the candidate to the exact vulnerable revision and build in the fixed environment. Record compiler output, test-command output, and whether the patch changed files outside the allowed workspace.
  2. Replay the original trigger. Run the supplied exploit, crash input, or security test with the documented command. Confirm that the vulnerability condition—not merely the process exit code—has disappeared. For memory-safety cases, inspect sanitizer and allocator diagnostics rather than accepting any non-crashing exit.
  3. Run positive behavior tests. Exercise valid inputs and normal workflows that the vulnerable component is expected to support. A parser that rejects every file may pass a malicious-input test while failing its product contract.
  4. Run regression tests. Include tests for the original bug’s surrounding behavior and previously fixed defects. Keep evaluator-only tests hidden from the agent when the goal is to prevent test-specific patching.
  5. Probe beyond the known input. Use fuzzing, property-based generation, or differential testing when the vulnerability and harness permit. Meta Engineering reports using fuzzing and white-box differential testing in addition to build and trigger checks.
  6. Inspect semantics. Review patches that remove a feature, bypass validation, broaden permissions, swallow errors, or alter unrelated code. Automated checks should flag these patterns for manual adjudication or a dedicated policy test.

“An AVR benchmark should provide (i) real-world vulnerabilities and their patches and (ii) at least one vulnerability trigger for each vulnerability and the corresponding test reports.”

— USENIX Security 2025, “VUL4C: Benchmark Dataset for Repairing C/C++ Vulnerabilities”

Why a PoC-only score is misleading

PatchBench reports that PoC-only validation inflated the measured patching solve rate by 1.83× on average across 11 agents in its study. The result is specific to that benchmark and agent set, but it demonstrates why a single exploit replay should not be the headline metric. The same paper found substantial similarity to historical developer patches in 25% of agent patches on average, another reason to separate genuine behavioral repair from reproduction of a memorized edit.

Detect “suppress the crash” patches

An agent can edit the function named in a stack trace, add an early return, ignore an error, clamp every value, or disable the vulnerable code path. Add tests that require valid functionality and, where possible, assert security properties at the boundary where the flaw occurs. Compare accepted patches against coverage and behavior baselines; a sharp loss of exercised functionality is a review signal, not evidence of success.

4. Control contamination and shortcut behavior

Public CVEs, bug reports, exploit samples, and developer fixes may have appeared in model training data. Treat historical tasks as potentially contaminated. Record disclosure dates, repository visibility, and whether the reference patch was public before evaluation. Do not claim that a patch-similarity score proves or disproves contamination; use it as one diagnostic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use freshness and transformation deliberately

  • Include recent cases when legal and operational constraints allow, and publish their age distribution.
  • Create vulnerability-transplantation or code-mutation variants that preserve the security property while changing names, layout, or surrounding logic.
  • Keep transformed cases traceable to their source so readers can distinguish synthetic variation from an independent real-world vulnerability.
  • Evaluate whether the agent edits only the crash-stack function or performs a data-flow-consistent repair.

Do not mix transformed and untouched cases in one unexplained aggregate. Report each category and explain how the transformation affects difficulty and realism.

5. Make the execution environment reproducible

Reproducibility is an artifact and configuration problem, not just a seed. Release or archive the materials needed to reconstruct every task.

Area Record or release
Source Dataset version, instance identifier, vulnerable commit, reference-fixed commit, and any local modifications
Environment Container image or build recipe, operating-system details, compiler and interpreter versions, libraries, architecture, and required services
Harness Build, trigger, positive-test, regression-test, fuzzing, and differential-test commands, plus expected artifacts
Agent Model and agent versions, scaffold, system and task instructions, tool permissions, network policy, sampling settings, and random seeds
Budget Wall-clock and token limits, number of attempts, parallelism, retry policy, and storage limits
Failure handling Timeout thresholds, infrastructure-error rules, malformed-patch handling, test-crash handling, and whether retries are counted
Scoring Evaluator version, test ordering, hidden-test policy, patch normalization, and aggregation code

SEC-bench is an example of exposing this configuration surface: its containerized instances and settings cover model, agent, dataset, task, and Docker parameters. A reproduction package should pin those values rather than rely on a mutable “latest” image or an undocumented workstation setup.

Separate patch failures from infrastructure failures

A compiler crash, unavailable dependency, container startup error, and agent timeout are not equivalent to a patch that fails a security test. Give infrastructure failures their own category, retain raw logs, and state whether they are removed from the denominator, counted as failures, or reported in a separate availability metric. Apply the same policy to every system being compared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Score and report results so readers can interpret them

Use task-level outcomes

Report the number of instances in each outcome, not only a leaderboard percentage. At minimum, distinguish:

  • Patch not produced or malformed.
  • Patch did not apply.
  • Build failure.
  • Original trigger still succeeds.
  • Trigger is removed but positive or regression tests fail.
  • All required tests pass.
  • Timeout or infrastructure error.
  • Manual semantic review required, with its adjudication.

Define the primary success rate as a formula with a denominator. For example, “all-required-tests pass divided by all eligible instances” is different from “all-required-tests pass divided by instances that built.” Publish both when they answer useful but different questions.

Break down the score

Provide results by language, vulnerability class, project, crash type, task information, and validation layer. Show how many cases reached each layer. A system that succeeds only when given a stack trace should not be presented as equivalent to one that diagnoses a vulnerability from repository context alone.

Handle stochastic agents honestly

State the number of independent runs, sampling settings, random seeds, and per-instance attempt budget. Report variability—such as a confidence interval or distribution of run-level scores—in addition to the best run. If retries are allowed, disclose whether a retry receives a fresh context and whether all attempts count toward the budget.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Annotate task and test quality

SWE-bench Verified offers a useful non-security precedent: its protocol applies a patch and runs FAIL_TO_PASS and PASS_TO_PASS tests, while human annotators separately assess issue clarity and test validity. A vulnerability benchmark can adopt the same separation by labeling trigger reliability, oracle strength, and task clarity rather than treating every failed execution as an agent mistake.

7. Compare benchmarks on design, not raw percentages

Before comparing scores, align the task definition, agent setup, and acceptance criteria. Use a comparison matrix such as this one:

Benchmark or framework Primary scope Distinctive evaluation emphasis What its score should not be assumed to mean
AutoPatchBench Fuzzing-found C/C++ vulnerabilities; Meta reports 136 curated samples and 11 crash types Curated reproducibility, build and trigger checks, fuzzing, and white-box differential testing Performance on broader security tasks or non-C/C++ repairs
SEC-bench Broader real-world software-security tasks Containerized instances and configurable model, agent, task, dataset, and Docker settings Direct equivalence to a narrowly scoped crash-repair benchmark
PatchBench Vulnerability patching with emphasis on validity PoC-only inflation, historical-patch similarity, and crash-suppression risks A universal contamination rate or universal agent ranking
VUL4C requirements in the USENIX Security 2025 paper Automated repair of C/C++ vulnerabilities Real-world vulnerabilities and patches plus at least one trigger and corresponding test reports A complete scoring protocol by itself

For every comparison, disclose vulnerability source and realism, language and project coverage, CWE or crash-type distribution, prompt-visible information, tool and network access, build and trigger reliability, validation depth, contamination controls, and timeout and failure rules. Raw pass rates are not commensurate when those axes differ.

9. Common failure modes and fixes

Flaky trigger

Symptom: the same vulnerable revision alternates between crashing and passing. Fix: repeat the trigger on clean environments, pin timing-sensitive dependencies, stabilize seeds, and exclude or separately label cases that remain nondeterministic.

Broken reference build

Symptom: the supposed fixed revision cannot be built from the published instructions. Fix: preserve the exact toolchain and container used for curation, rerun the reference build during dataset release, and do not use the case for a primary score until the oracle works.

PoC passes after feature removal

Symptom: the exploit fails because the entire feature now rejects input. Fix: add valid-input tests, compare coverage or output behavior with the vulnerable baseline, and require a manual semantic decision for intentional feature changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Agent edits only the stack-frame function

Symptom: an early return or error suppression eliminates the observed crash but leaves the root cause or a denial-of-service path. Fix: add neighboring valid and invalid cases, check security properties at the data boundary, and use fuzzing or differential testing where a harness exists.

Hidden infrastructure failures

Symptom: a low score combines malformed patches, timeouts, dependency outages, and genuine security-test failures. Fix: publish a failure taxonomy, raw logs, retry rules, and separate infrastructure availability from patch correctness.

Uninterpretable benchmark comparison

Symptom: one benchmark reports a higher percentage despite easier prompts, more retries, or weaker tests. Fix: align task scope and evaluator layers, or present the results as separate measurements instead of ranking them.

10. Release checklist

  • Claim, target population, task input, tool access, and exclusions are explicit.
  • Every primary instance has a reproducible vulnerable revision, trigger, build, and expected diagnostic.
  • The reference fix builds and removes the trigger.
  • Positive and regression tests cover intended behavior.
  • Fuzzing, property-based, or differential checks are included where the harness supports them.
  • Cases with flaky triggers, missing diagnostics, broken builds, or ambiguous behavior are labeled or excluded with reasons.
  • Contamination risk, public availability, task age, and any transformations are documented.
  • Containers, dependencies, commands, evaluator code, model and agent settings, budgets, seeds, and timeout rules are versioned.
  • Infrastructure errors are separated from patch failures.
  • Scores include denominators, outcome categories, run counts, variability, and breakdowns by relevant task attributes.
  • Comparisons explain scope and validation differences before showing percentages.

How to interpret a benchmark score

A high score means only what the acceptance contract says it means. If the contract requires build success, trigger removal, positive tests, and regression tests, the score is evidence of that combined capability on the stated population. It is not proof that every generated patch fixes the root cause, that the agent generalizes to undisclosed vulnerability classes, or that the result is free from training-data contamination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most informative reports show the path from attempted patch to validated repair: how many built, how many stopped the trigger, how many preserved behavior, how many passed broader probes, and how many required manual review. That trail lets readers distinguish diagnosis, implementation, validation, and infrastructure reliability instead of treating one percentage as a complete answer.
